Sell-out for local author
The Pattaya Mail’s Dr. Iain Corness witnessed a sell-out
of his book “Farang, Thailand through the eyes of an ex-pat”, at the signing
ceremony held at Jameson’s Irish Pub last weekend.
Dr.
Iain (left) signs a copy of his new book “Farang, Thailand through the eyes
of an ex-pat,” for Dr William.
The book had been selling well in Bookazine since its release two weeks ago,
but extra copies had to be carried down from the distributors in Bangkok for
the signing ceremony, as it was known that many people were waiting to get a
signed copy. By the end of the evening, there were only four books left,
making it the best selling publication in Bookazine.
Dr. Iain was delighted at the response, but admitted that before the event
he was quite anxious. “It’s like throwing a party and wondering if anybody
will come,” he said. They did come!
Requests have been sent to the UK publishers, Maverick House, for additional
copies to be flown in, as the stocks in Thailand would have run out by the
end of this week. Bookazine staff were, however, quietly confident that they
would get enough books to restock the shelves in time.
Expatriate author Jake Anthony read the book and was moved to write, “It is
absolutely beautiful, whimsical, funny, informative for people who have been
here and of course revelational for those abroad who have not. A unique
piece of work. It is an absolutely great book.”

Another full house
at the weekly PCEC meeting
It was a noticeable full house which attended this week’s
meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) on Sunday September 23rd at
Henry J. Bean’s as the club was honoured to welcome a speaker of importance.
PCEC Chairman Richard Smith welcomed Ittiphol Khunplome, who is a candidate
for the position of Pattaya mayor in the forthcoming election due to take
place next year. Ittiphol has a very impressive resume and was accompanied
by his support team.
Ittiphol
Khunplome addresses the PCEC.
The theme of Ittiphol’s talk was ‘Strategic Framework-Building, a Roadmap
for Development,’ specifically for Pattaya should he be elected. This
consisted of his overall vision of the future of Pattaya and was extremely
detailed.
The roadmap was described as a long term path for success and could be
divided into different phases covering one, three, and five to ten years in
duration.
His aim would be to ‘create strong leadership and accountability for the
government of Pattaya with clear and definable success markers for the long
term growth of the city, its administration and industries.’
Ittiphol would also seek to improve the image of Pattaya by promoting a
range of daytime activities in addition to the nightlife. A number of
interesting statistical charts were displayed which compared, for example,
the spending patterns of visiting tourists in Pattaya with other tourist
areas such as Chang Mai and Phuket.
PCEC Vice Chairman Andre Machielsen remarked that it was most appreciated
that Ittiphol had chosen to talk at the PCEC Sunday meeting, particularly as
the vast majority of those attending were not able to vote in the election.
Chairman Richard Smith hoped that, if elected, Ittiphol would make a return
visit as the new mayor of Pattaya.
MC Roger Fox then returned to the normal PCEC meeting format with the
announcement that the annual Chonburi buffalo races would take place on
October 6th at Chonburi City Hall.
Always a popular subject is that of food. Board member Michel de Goumois
announced that the next club dinner would take place at La Arcate, Italian
Restaurant. Everyone was invited to attend. Marjorie Blissett announced that
she would soon offer English cooking lessons.
The regular Open Forum was then underway led by Bob L’Etoile, ably assisted
by Sig Sigworth who appears to be the butt of all jokes! As usual this
proved to be the usual lively and entertaining session. For more information
regarding, not only PCEC Sunday meetings but also the many mid week
activities, please see the Community Happenings section of Pattaya Mail or,
