Thai lawn bowlers score victory over Brunei Darussalam
Martin Bilsborrow
The Thai national lawn bowls team gained a moral boosting victory
over a representative side from Brunei Darussalam at the Pattaya Bowling
Green last week.
The
Brunei Darussalam lady bowlers take on their Thai counterparts in
Pattaya.
With the SEA Games just a few weeks away, the Brunei Sports Federation
sent a strong team featuring some of their star bowlers to take on the
Thai team and gain some experience of playing in this country: this
match being the first time a lawn bowls team from the sultanate had ever
visited these shores.
The contest last week got underway on Monday with a mixture of singles,
pairs and triples matches in a best of five format with each session
(morning or afternoon) going to the team with the most wins.
Initially the Brunei players, seven of whom are semi-professional,
seemed to struggle with the speed of the natural grass at the Pattaya
Green (currently all the greens in Brunei are made of artificial grass)
and this allowed the Thai team under the watchful eye of coach Robbie
Dobbins to build up a 2-1 lead over the first two days.
Local Pattaya girls, Thong, Jeang and Ned, the former two in the triples
and the latter in the pairs were at the forefront of some good bowling
by the Thai team that saw them take the match on the final morning with
a 3.5-1.5 session score. The final afternoon matches were therefore
irrelevant to the overall scoreline, but were still played out in a
competitive spirit and the Thais were once again triumphant by 3 matches
to 2, thus giving them an overall 4-1 victory in sessions.
Brunei Darussalam player “VJ”, a gold medal winner from the 2005 SEA
Games, said that despite the result, the visit to Thailand had been most
beneficial and he said the team had been made to feel most welcome
during their time here.
Thai coach Robbie Dobbins said he was pleased with the final result as
the Brunei team, with the backing of their government, is able to spend
a lot more time practicing together than their Thai counterparts and
many of their players are professionals in all but name.
He cautioned, however, that more time and money needs to be invested at
the grass roots level in this country to encourage Thai youngsters to
take up the game otherwise he said the lack of internal competition will
make it difficult for the national team to improve.
Both of these teams, Thailand and Brunei Darussalam are expected to
figure strongly in the round robin format of the SEA Games next month,
although lawn bowls powerhouse Malaysia will no doubt start as
favourites, having already signaled their intent to win all six gold
medals on offer at the games. But as coach Robbie said before he
departed with the team bound for Bangkok, “In this sport on any given
day, anybody can beat anyone.”
In a result that would further please the coach, Thailand were able to
beat Brunei Darussalam in a further unofficial test at the Polo Club in
Bangkok last Friday by a score of 4 matches to 1.
Both teams celebrate the
first lawns bowls match played between
the two nations in this country.
A windy day at Emerald
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, November 6, The Emerald, Stableford
I thought I would book this course and go down there to check out
the rave reports I have been getting about this place.
A quick book in saw us at the first tee trying to stand against a howling
wind. It was soon obvious this was going to be a trying day, and so it was,
and this is possibly why the course was nearly empty.
This was a day for the brave, and high scores, as the wind blew the balls
all over. It also seems that the course is not at its best, with not much
rain at present and hard patches all over the place. Still a game is a game
so on we went. Mind I found one of the improvements as at the first tee I
fell over one of the new small concrete posts. I was fine but Dick Warberg
pulled his back as I fell on him. Must go on a diet.
So we got around, wind blown but defiant, and back at Bert’s we all sat
around the big table and heard the results.
Most people seemed to get 32 points, however the winner was Jackie MacDonald
with 37 points, the only one to beat handicap, ahead of a three way count
back on 34 points that saw Steve Hamstad in second, Bill Knight in third and
Rick Evans in fourth.
One of the highlights of the day was that yours truly won 4 technical prizes
with 3 near pins and a long put. Mind, despite them all being close there
was not one birdie on the card, yes “drive for show, put for dough.”

Ebrahim cruises to win at Treasure Hill
PSC golf from The Café Kronborg

Thursday, November 8, Treasure Hill, Stableford
This is a busy part of the year, and every day out seems to be a
tournament, scramble or memorial, so it was nice to get back to a simple
round of golf. Mind, it is a long way to Treasure Hills and the hope was
that it would be a quiet day.
The course was quiet and there was practically nobody there, except us, so
we got away a little early. Yes the wind was howling and in fact blasted us
all day, so I suppose that we can put the poor scores down to the wind and
not to the indifferent condition of the course, or golfers.
We had two flights, and in the A Flight (0 to 20) the winner was Ebrahim, he
has been known to win before, with 38 points. In second was Henry O’Brien
with 36 points and in third was Richard Kubicki with 34 points.
In the B Flight the scores were not quite as good, so with 35 points Mike
Winfield won, Bent Moeller was second with 30 points and J.C. Lhoste was
third with 29 points. T.T.F.N.

Two cyclists from Pattaya join Sea Games
Ariyawat Nuamsawat
Two young lady cyclists from Pattaya have been selected to join the
Thai national mountain bike team to compete in the SEA Games next month.
Mountain
bikers Sattayanan Abdulkari and Utsanee Pradabyat will be representing
Pattaya as well as Thailand at next month’s SEA Games.
The Mountain Bike Club in Pattaya held a celebration after Sattayanan
Abdulkari and Utsanee Pradabyat passed the selection rounds and were
accepted by the national team. They will take part in the mountain biking
heats that will be held at Nakhon Ratchasima, but will attend a training
camp first.
The SEA Games, which is being hosted by Thailand, will be held over the
period December 6 to 15. Both cyclists will compete in the Downhill category
in which both are very experienced.
During the celebration party held at Loma Seafood Restaurant in North
Pattaya on November 5, president of the Mountain Bike Club, Manot Nongyai,
said that the two Pattaya youngsters had already attended several
tournaments under the banner of the Thai national team. Sattayanan had even
won second place in this year’s Asian Championships.
Itthipol Khunplome, advisor to the mayor, said that Chonburi Province always
tries to support youngsters in all types of sports, and many have gone on to
enjoy success at the national level. He added that Pattaya City supports
this policy and is continuously looking to implement sports development in
the area.

Polo season opens with
victory for Singapore
The 7th Beginner’s Polo Cup
Tom Claytor
The Polo Season opened this past weekend at Siam Polo Park with the
7th playing of the Beginner’s Polo Cup. This is the traditional tournament
in Thailand for new players to the game to come and show what they have
learned.
Khun
Susy (right) on the attack for Polo Escape at the Beginner’s Polo Cup.
This year, there were 3 teams: Singapore, Siam Polo Park and Polo Escape.
The Singaporeans looked a little shaken before the tournament began as their
star player from Pakistan was not able to secure a Thai Visa in time.
However, their ranks were filled by Tomy and Nyata and their team quickly
took form on the field.
Siam Polo Park fielded two brand new players with Yasser El Fahham and Khun
Scott who only started to play last season. However, they were in the very
capable hands of Jaime “Gallego” Miranda who is known to hit the ball with
great passion when he is still on his horse.
The Polo Escape team was captained by Khun Susy and had Khun Ploy filling in
at the last minute to round off the team.
On Sunday, it was the Singaporeans who captured victory with the young
Singaporean players Graham and Kerry Bones smiling from ear to ear as they
lifted the cup above their heads.
This coming weekend will see some fast polo action at Siam Polo Park as the
second playing of the Argentinean Ambassador’s Cup is played. This
tournament is a 6-goal tournament with polo professionals from Argentina,
England and Pakistan bringing their skills to the field.
There are 5 teams playing in this tournament - Hong Kong, Singapore, Polo
Escape, Black Dog, and the Thai National Team. It is the Thai National Team
that all eyes will be on, because this is the Thai team that will be
competing next month from 6-15 December in the SEA Games.
The Ambassador’s Cup Tournament will be presided over by His Excellency
Felipe Frydman, the Argentinean Ambassador, and will take place over three
days from 15-17 November beginning every afternoon at 3:00pm.
Saturday evening, Nov 17, will feature a traditional Argentine Asado cookout
after the final. Everybody is welcome to come and learn about polo. If you
would like to attend the Asado, then please contact the club to make a
reservation and find out the cost of the dinner - www.siampolonews.com
Bell “ringer” at Plutaluang
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the OK Corral
Sunday, November 4, the Pattaya Golf Society
travelled to Plutaluang for a stableford competition over the South and
East nines.
The largest field for a Sunday in three months assembled on time and set
about their task on a well-prepared course but with inconsistent greens.
He who putted well would win today.
Jesper Hansen, finding consistency towards the end of his stay, played
well to record 35 points for a share of third place with Paul O”Brien,
whilst lady golfer Na Srionrod went one better to nab second place with
a level par 36 point score.
The star of the day surely had to be Aussie friend Jim Bell who recorded
a fine 38 points to take the win, including as it did the day’s only
birdie ‘2’ as well. His playing partners confirmed he had putted like a
dream throughout. Thus he had good cause to ring the bell back at the OK
Corral later in the evening, the regular Sunday single flight providing
a nice little earner.
At the other end of the scale jovial Finn Jorma Liila had the
distinction of firing the worst round ever with the group, his sole
point coming on the third hole.
Brett stars at Mountain Shadow
Tuesday saw thirty eager players travel to Mountain Shadow to
play a stableford event off the blue tees, with a strong breeze to
adding to the challenge. The course belied its high season status with
very few golfers and good progress was made all day.
The two flights were cut at nineteen and under and the welcome
appearance of many old friends made the day an enjoyable one for all.
Straight away the rolling fast greens were to be a test and the wind
made some holes much more difficult. Little wonder then that in the top
flight Erik Antonnen could not believe his luck as he carded a score of
only 29 points for third place, three behind lady golfer Na Srionrod who
continued her progress with a fine 32 points return.
The flight winner was the personable Dane Jesper Hansen and he chose
this, his final round this visit, to take his first victory.
Surprisingly the lower flight scored better with rookie Martin Hoblyn
recording an excellent 32 points for third place, his first podium
finish in his short OK Corral career. In second place was Paul Quodomine
whose final teasing putt, downhill from six feet, rattled the hole to
give him twenty points on the back nine and 35 in total. The day’s best
score however was produced by Paul Brett, his 39 points giving PB his
‘PB’.
Yukio Kikuchi had the pleasure of the day’s only birdie ‘2’ while the
favourites for the Booby Bevy were the three Belgians who allowed their
caddies to escort them to the wrong tees for three holes, thus negating
their scores. But the arrival of old mate Roy Mann from England is
always a cause for celebration and scoring his first point on the eighth
hole kept up his record of always receiving the beer on his first day
back on the golf course.
Sam ‘Fitz’ the bill at Green Valley
The PGS took the short trip to Green Valley on Thursday to
play a stableford event on this popular course, which was in top
condition with extremely fast greens. The wind was also up all day and
so no small amount of skill was needed to cope with the task.
The two flights were cut at 22 and under and in the lower flight Paul
Quodomine and Len Jones found that their mediocre scores of 26 points
had given them a share of third place. Embarrassed by this they found
themselves applauding Denis Smith for his second placed 27 points! The
flight winner was Martin Hoblyn, his 30 points ending a good week for
the novice. So where were the good scores?
In the top flight Jim Bell had returned 32 points for third whilst Na
Srionrod’s amazing front nine score of 23 points certainly had some
merit. In the end a poor finish gave her a moderate 34 for second.
It was left to Sam Fitzsimmons to produce the round of the day and his
39 points return featured a 21 -18 split to give him the best gross of
the day also. He also had the honour of firing one of the day’s duo of
birdie 2’s, sharing the pot with Niilo Olonen.
At the other end of the scale Ray Underwood struggled in the wind and on
the greens and rounded his day off with the Booby Bevy.

The week started off with a visit to Mountain Shadow on Monday. I was

themselves out of the market with their high charges for midweek play.

The Beautiful Game?:
Riz Taylor
Champions League? Someone’s having a laugh
Some people are never happy. Just take the letters page
of this newspaper as an example – baht bus prices, shoddy workmanship, dirty
beaches … it’s enough to make you want to quit life in the fast lane and go
and live in some exotic paradise full of beautiful people with a
delightfully simplistic take on life, with trivial matters such as public
footpaths and road safety at the bottom of the agenda. Think how lovely that
would be.
Football is no different, and no matter how good things are going you’ll
always hear a few dissenting voices amongst the ranks. Win the league and
you can bet your backside someone claiming to support your club will arrive
on a radio phone-in bemoaning the lack of beautiful football or telling
everyone that the side needs a new striker. Get a life!
We all want beautiful football, but if everyone played like Arsenal it would
become the expected and we’d soon tire of it. People would perhaps even
crave “boring” football again. The diversity in styles makes the game what
it is – something few people appreciate. We need the Boltons and Blackburns
just as much as the Barcelonas of this world to keep things interesting.
The latest target of the abuse is the Champions League, and seeing as
there’s no Premier League football this weekend now seems as good a time as
any to cover it. As English sides cruise into the knockout stages –
struggling Liverpool aside - and even Scotland’s representatives are going
along relatively nicely, along come the voices from within Britain that the
premier club tournament is becoming too easy.
It all began last week when Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp, writing in
his own newspaper column (it seems just about anyone can get a football
column these days), started the ball rolling as he claimed that the
competition in its current format means “weeks of meaningless practice games
where the fans pay top prices to watch teams already through to the second
round - or already doomed. The Champions League is fast replacing the
Carling Cup as a stage for the reserves to enjoy a few days in a pretty,
foreign town and a run out.”
Redknapp, whose Portsmouth side are currently sixth in the Premier League
and looking certainties for at least UEFA Cup football next year, admitted
his views might “sound odd”, but he suggested that some of the recent high
scorelines in the Champions League, such as Liverpool’s record 8-0 thumping
of Besiktas and Arsenal’s comprehensive 7-0 victory over Slavia Prague, were
becoming commonplace.
“It is because of the huge disparity between the teams and, moreover, what I
regard as the monotonous, plodding group stages,” he said. “I am speaking
not as a manager and member of the football fraternity but as a punter who
likes to watch exciting games on TV,” he continued, before admitting that “I
know the big clubs’ chief execs would be dead set against reverting to the
old format.”
And there’s the problem. What has long been apparent in the domestic leagues
of Europe, where Champions League clubs and their money have been dominating
proceedings for a number of years, is now starting to take hold in the
competition itself. Seeding the big teams for an easy route through to the
knockout rounds on their request is providing us, the punters, with very
little to get excited about. English clubs are regularly cruising towards
the latter stages and sides such as Besiktas and Slavia Prague are powerless
to stop it.
Not that English clubs have much to sing about when you consider their
performances in the competition in recent seasons. Yes there were three
representatives in the semi finals last year but it was AC Milan that came
away winners. English sides have won the competition just twice in the last
decade, and both Manchester United and Liverpool can consider themselves
pretty fortunate to have emerged with the trophy after coming back from the
brink in both finals.
But while it’s pretty early for some people to start bragging about British
sides once again dominating the Champions League as they did in the late
seventies and the early eighties, what is becoming clear is that the same
old sides are easing through to the knockout rounds each season, and taking
my nationalist hat off for a moment I’m going to join the moaners and
suggest that it’s time something was done about it. German sides, for
example, who choose not to crucify their fans with monstrous admission fees
and have barely any television money in comparison to the Spanish, Italian
and British clubs, are struggling to compete, and surely that’s no good for
the future of European football.
Here’s are my solutions for jazzing up the Champions League, which I hope
that UEFA will discuss this week after reading this column:
1/ Random draws for the group stages. Stop seeding the big boys and draw the
group stages from a hat. We’d then be able to enjoy the odd ‘group of death’
and the smaller sides would have a real shot at making an impact in the
latter stages of the competition. Who here wouldn’t be interested in a group
that contains Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, as
an example?
2/ Stop separating sides from the same country. Why are clubs kept apart?
What could be more entertaining than seeing Liverpool, Arsenal, Celtic and
Chelsea in the same group? Here’s some news for the suits – your average
football fans want exciting action and passionate matches and are not
interested in safeguarding the revenue flow of a few elite clubs. Even the
fans of those elite clubs should realise that competitive European football
is dying a death in its current format.
3/ Stop sending the group stage rejects into the UEFA Cup and devaluing the
competition. Out of one, out of all.
Who knows what’ll happen in the long term, but it’s clear that something
must change. Does anyone here bother staying awake for the group stages of
the Champions League anymore? And aside from the players and their agents,
who exactly is benefiting from all this meaningless football?
Asian seeds drawn
The top Asian seedings for this month’s preliminary 2010 World
Cup draw have been modified by FIFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)
said on Sunday. Taking into account the 2006 World Cup, Australia are still
the top-ranked team followed by South Korea. Iran moved up two places to
third, whilst Japan and Saudi Arabia are the joint fourth seeds. Thailand
loiter in 19th position, waiting for the right time to make their move.
Meanwhile Abu Dhabi’s executive council has splashed out more than $35
million on its soccer clubs in a bid to bring silverware to the oil-rich
emirate, it says here. Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nayan of Abu Dhabi
has approved the 122.5 million dirhams (33.4 million US Dollars) investment
with an additional 10.4 million dirhams for foreign players.

With a large field we were forced to split into two groups, one playing AB,

Even Bernie Seagrave enjoyed himself with a magnificent forty-two point win
on count back, and nice to see Alan Bishop returning to a bit of form.
There was only one ‘2’ recorded today, it was Jack Moseley, but not with his
cold putter, he chipped in!
Is this the calm before the storm? Christmas is coming with the usual
stories of hiked up prices and coach loads of visiting golfers.
Friday, November 9, Eastern Star, Stableford
1st John Stafford 39pts
2nd Dennis Perssons 36pts
3rd Sugar Ray 36pts
4th Barry Chadbourn 34pts
2’s: Brent Dalby & Joachim
G’day, my name’s Joey and I’ll be lookin’ after things while me mate’s away
in good old England. Any way, the golf went pretty well at Eastern Star,
sounds like a Sidney newspaper to me. Only eleven Outbackers bothered to
turn up so it was all over by tea time. A big Irish fella won and looked as
pleased as punch.
Me old mate, Bob “I’ve gotta tell ya” Philp, tells me that Barry and Trudy
get a big hand for winnin’ the beautiful Fruit Bowl, whatever that is, and
also get the Hat for finally leaving Geoff’s driver leanin’ against a dunny
wall somewhere between here and Ban Chang. Lastly I’ve gotta say farewell to
a real good mate Dalby. See ya soon buddie.
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road along
Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a hit.
Just call in and put your name down on the list or give Bob a call on 087

28th to Royal Lakeside.
The Square Ring: by Howie Reed
‘Your Lordship, your penchant for kissing up to your
local readers has gotten you in trouble yet again. Your good friend OD
e-mails: “We here in isolated Pismo Beach (California) didn’t know
Tiffany’s jewelry store had a chorus line. Tiffany’s must also be a
casino in Vegas, right? Even though I attended a catholic school from
1st through 9th grades, why did Graziano have a bigger rep than Tony
Zale? More TV talk show appearances?”
‘What do you write to that your Lordship?’
Well Jeeves, of course Pattaya and Thai folks know that Tiffany’s has a
cabaret show that is world famous except in Pismo Beach, California.
It’s so well known that “cabaret show” means “He who would be she,” or
as they say in Thailand “women of the second category.” It is also a
fact that during any cabaret show you will hear Shania Twain’s “Feel
Like a Women” at least once.
The Zale-Graziano question is interesting though because the argument
could be made for either boxer being superior. Tony Zale was 67-18 after
starting his career 9-8. The wrap and rumor on him was that he was
“gangster controlled” and sometimes took a dive. No real proof.
After he beat Graziano in October of 1948 he fought his last bout
against the great Marcel Cerdan who at the time was 108-3 and rated the
best in the world. During the fight the great singer Edith Piaf was in
the audience cheering on Cerdan with whom she was having a “passionate
love affair.” Zale couldn’t come out for the 12th and the fight was
later voted “fight of the year.” In fact Zale was involved in four
fights that were voted by Ring Magazine as “fights of the year”.
While Zale retired, Cerdan went on to fight four more times. He beat
Englishman Dick Turpin, who at the time was considered one of the best.
Cerdan’s 4th loss came against Jake LaMotta in what would be his last
fight. Cerdan retired after the 12th round with an injured shoulder.
After training for a return fight, Cedan was flying to American for the
rematch when his plane went down and he was killed.
Rocky Graziano was 67-10 but with the exception of the one Zale win his
record is not filled with greats. He lost to Sugar Ray Robinson, as did
many, and to Chuck Davy. Both those fighters were good. Then he has two
losses to a non descript Harold Green which don’t help with the
credential building.
There’s an old saying, “the farther you get away from the game the
better you were.” Graziano is probably an example of that. Paul Newman
played Rocky in the 1956 movie of his life “Somebody Up There Likes Me”.
Graziano was much more of a personality than the tough talking Zale
whose rough edges were there for all to see.
It’s strange Jeeves but last week’s column drew only a couple of
comments about the Calzaghe-Kessler fight.
“Loved the Calzaghe fight. The contender final was great. Pavlik vs.
Calzaghe would be much better than Hopkins but the big money must say
Hopkins.”
That came in from the original Star Wars star Roger Anthony. That aside
there was almost no comment, no e-mails and no interest. But more
importantly no call for a rematch. Why? Well maybe Patrick the Flying
Frog (Governor of Patrick’s Belgian Restaurant) came up with the answer.
“So sad they didn’t show Calzaghe-Kessler on satellite TV. I was zapping
from 7.30am until 9.30am, until I decided to look around some Irish pubs
and find a bar somewhere that showed the fight via a Danish satellite
station. I saw only the last 3 rounds, what a battle by the 2 champions.
I am so disappointed in True Vision satellite TV.”
Yes - the last three rounds were good but three rounds don’t a fight
make. That is with one exception. Right Jeeves?
‘The date was April 15, 1985 and your lordship was in residence at the
Tip Ching Hotel in Lampang. It was 8am in the morning when your lordship
joined some Japanese tourists on couches in the lobby to watch Thomas
“The Motor City Cobra” Hearns (61-5) in against “Marvelous “ Marvin
Hagler (62-3) from Las Vegas, Nevada.
‘The fight, which lasted only 3 rounds, had more action and more
knockdowns that a month of modern day bouts. It was the war to end all
wars. So your lordship, in this case three rounds did make a fight that
will live forever in the history of boxing.’
Little side note Jeeves. The fight was shown on a portable old-fashioned
home movie screen. The TV feed was obviously “acquired” by Thai means.
The picture kept rolling on the screen from bottom to top so those of us
viewing would rise following the action as it moved towards the top of
the screen and then sit down when action started again on the bottom.
‘Your Lordship, I think that you owe an apology to Danny Green who you
probably don’t know is trained by Thailand-based Cuban, Ismael Salas. He
explained the reason for the cancellation of his fight against Antonio
Tarver.
Green said, “We were negotiating with Antonio Tarver’s people straight
after the Otis Griffin fight on July 18. I offered him a ridiculous
amount of money to come down under yet they wouldn’t accept. We asked
them for an amount that we thought was very fair. They declined our
request.
“I then accepted a purse that I could have quadrupled fighting Rocky
Balboa’s brother-in-law Paulie! Seven weeks ago we were given the all
clear to announce the fight in Australia, so I went live on TV to a
viewing audience of a million and a half at an Aussie rules game
halftime interval to break the great news. We were told a contract was
coming but all was sweet.
“Five weeks out from the fight with no contract or contact, I instructed
my manager Justin Manolikas to go ahead and approach one of the other
champions. Within one week we sealed the deal and had a signed contract.
Simple. I bent over for Tarver’s people enough.”’
That’s all well and good Jeeves and probably true. Working with Tarver
is never a stroll in the park. I promise both fans out there that this
is the last time The Square Ring will mention Antonio Tarver and his
match on December 1. He now has a new opponent in Danny “The Bronx
Bomber” Santiago (29-3-1). Don’t know anything about him and don’t care.
John Steinbeck once wrote, “The purpose of fighting is to win. There is
no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the
shield and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the
brain. All else is supplemental.”
The late novelist in a nutshell has described what boxing is or should
be about. It’s about young people, training hard using brain and brawn
to win. The Mexican fighter of today is the poster persona most
identified with Steinbeck’s view.
A great example recently was Jose “The Pit Bull” Diaz (14-1). He’s the
younger brother of lightweight champ Juan. His one loss came against
Miguel Angel Munquia (15-9-1) last out via the UD route. Did he have an
excuse? Well kind of.
Diaz, who fought through tremendous pain and adversity, had a broken jaw
and one tooth almost knocked out which he asked his corner to pull out
at the end of the first round. That be tough!
One boxer who has the potential to be a gigantic star is Kelly Pavlik.
He’s tough, he’s white in a non-white sport and always puts on a great
fistic show. He may have been in a “yawner” fight but The Square Ring
has never seen one. His problem is that he can’t stay out of trouble
outside the ring. That situation would suggest that he ought to fight
every month so he’s either in the ring, preparing for the ring, or
resting (one day) after being in the ring.
Pavlik’s previous troubles and his stay at the “All Bar Inn” have been
noted, reported and filed. The latest incident occurred while he was
“repairing” a broken window at his home. The official reports states:
“Kelly sustained three superficial lacerations to the right forearm and
hand and also three superficial lacerations to the left forearm and
hand. He also had numerous superficial abrasions.”
Sounds like a typical “no harm no foul” situation. Except for the fact
that Jeeves, ever on duty, remembers the initial report of the incident
which would suggest that maybe there was something more to the story.
“Kelly Pavlik required 108 stitches on his arms and hands after
accidentally putting them through a kitchen window,” reported ESPN.
Little press spin going on here you think?
ESPN will surely be showing the finals of their Contender Series for the
next year. If anyone gets the chance to watch the final in re-run, mark
it as a “thing what I have to do.”
The final matched Jaidon Codrington (18-1) against better-known and more
experienced Sakio Baka (24-3-2). Baka, a native of Cameroon now living
and fighting out of Sydney, had a big edge in experience having been in
the ring with the likes of Marcus Beyer and Joe Calzaghe. In the hearts
department they both had enough for a full division of boxers. We won’t
reveal the results but next time ESPN shows it, be sure to watch. It’s a
barnburner.
‘Your lordship, it is my duty to report that last Sunday in New York
City, Miguel Cotto extended his winning streak to 31 and 0 with a
unanimous decision over Shane Mosley. All the judges scored the fight
115-113 except for the one that scored it 116-113.
‘As part of the undercard Joel Casamayor made his first start in 13
months. He got knocked down in round one by Jose Armando Cruz but came
back to win a very “dodgy” split decision. One boxing writer felt that
Casamayor appeared to be a “shell of his former self.” That fight 13
months ago was against the late Diego Corrales which judge Jerry Roth
saw 114-113 for Corrales, so that’s probably what it was.
‘The best fight of the weekend your lordship was at the Palais des
Sports Marcel Cerdan in Paris. David Haye from Britain won the WBA/WBC
cruiserweight title when he came back from near oblivion in round four
to knock out Jean-Marc Mormeck in seven. At 19-1 Haye said he now wants
to move up to heavyweight and seek another world title. Smart boy.
‘Now your lordship, I want to try something new. I’ve got your cigars
but wish to test a new liquid for your refreshment celebration. Is the
blindfold in place? OK try this.’
It’s very cold Jeeves, doesn’t have any smell, phew, my goodness Jeeves
what in the name of all that is holy was that? Water? Well there’ll be
no more of that my man. No wonder I never drank it before.
Ploy takes low gross
on ladies day out
The Eastern Seaboard Ladies Golf Club
The ladies enjoyed a great
day’s golfing at Pattaya Country Club.
The Eastern Seaboard Ladies Golf society held their
fourth tournament at Pattaya Country Club on Thursday, November 8. A
large field of 39 players took part in the event on a windy but
cloudless day.
Inform Ploy Thongpen was the overall low gross winner of the day whilst
the winner of the net score was Thanasorn Vitayachengtien with Khun
Rasamee coming a close second.
Other notable awards were the Booby Award going to Wanida Reed, Near
Pins to new members Kem and Ploy and the longest putt being claimed by
Khun Su - but everyone who showed up had a great day.
The next outing is in a couple of weeks. If you’d like to play please
call the club president, Khun Naowarat Khakai, on 081 996 9160.
Bruce cleans up at Green Valley
PSC golf from the Caddyshack
Monday, November 5, Greenwood, Medal
Today saw 24 golfers do battle over courses A and B at
Greenwood in a medal round that was to cause all players to concentrate
for 18 holes. The course was in immaculate condition, with every player
commenting on its excellence, although some expressed difficulty with
the speed of the greens.
The competition was split into 2 flights: A Flight was won by Kiyoto
Tanaka, one of four Japanese golfers on holiday in Pattaya, with a
creditable net 69. Second place also went to another holidaymaker Yosuo
Suzuki (on your bike!) with a net 71. Third place went to Wee Brian Orr
from Belfast with a net74 - Ey right!
B Flight spoils went to American Jim Boyd with a net70 (must be the new
driver Jimmy!). Second place went to yet another of our Japanese
friends, Yukio Kikuchi with a net 73, who beat third place winner,
Linsay Joslum on a count back.
The 2’s pool was shared between 4 players, well done to all.
Wednesday, November 7, Green Valley, Stableford
Twenty players took part in a stableford competition at Green
Valley on Wednesday. With the course and conditions perfect, it was
inevitable that good scores would be posted. Once again the competition
was split into 2 flights.
A Flight was won by Graham Dietrich playing off 10 handicap with 39
points (allegedly one of the “Turpin” family) - well done Graham!
Second place went to Vincent Smyth with 35 points and third went to Unto
Kilvonen with 31 points.
B Flight honours went to our Golf Director at the Caddyshack, Mr. Bruce
Tollitt with 36 points. Second place went to a recovering Mike Wing with
35 points, and third spot was claimed by Jim Boyd with 33 points.
The 2’s pool was swept up by one player, none other than Bruce Tollitt
(it must have been a miss-hit!).
‘Clubmaker to the Stars’ is the star, but Terry is right behind

White Tees, Stableford
A Flight
1st Steve Mulberry (11) 42pts
2nd Steve Mascari (5) 41pts
3rd Jim Munns (11) 39pts
B Flight
1st Marc Reid (19) 42pts
2nd Fergus O”Brien (19) 41pts
3rd Seamus Cotter (18) 40pts
Ladies Flight
1st Suzi Lawton (14) 35pts
2nd Kay Molloy (27) 35pts
Near Pins: Kris Kritsanajootha; Colin Davis, Noel Jackson; Ian
Grout
2’s: Jim Munns, Tony Molly, Klaus Schackt, Colin Davis, Gareth
Gill, Terry Wagner, Peter Emslie, Barry Chadbourn
The lads gave notice that it could be a week of big scores right off the
bat as top man on the day was shared by A Flight’s Blackpool Steve and C
Flight’s Marc Reid. Steve’s 42 points edged the fine effort of
ex-president Steve Mascari and the 39 of Capt. Fogg. Marc edged a pair
of Irishmen, Fergus O’Brien and Seamus Cotter.
The traditional C flight was eschewed as the gals had their own flight.
Suzi Lawton, who along with her husband John has just returned to
Pattaya after a fairly brief hiatus, was atop the pink flight as her 35
points counted back better then the Erin Isle’s Kay Molloy’s.
Tuesday, October 30, Phoenix Lake & Ocean – White
Tees, Stableford
A Flight
1st David Nash (16) 35pts
2nd Mike Rushant (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Terry Wagner (18) 38pts
2nd Richard Snellen (27) 38pts
2’s: None
B Flight was the story of the day as Terry Wagner started to build a
formidable bid for the ‘Title Slot’ with 38 points, a score he shared
with Richard Snellen. Terry received his first gold of the week thanks
to a count back over Richard. The Luck of the Irish prevailed as David
Nash counted back newcomer Mike Rushant in A Flight.
Wednesday, October 31, Greenwood C & A – White Tees,
Stableford
A Flight
1st Neil Cameron (16) 48pts
2nd Gordon Kerr (12) 42pts
3rd Tony Daly (14) 39pts
B Flight
1st Terry Wagner (18) 39pts
2nd Paul Ryan (26) 38pts
3rd Bob Lindborg (17) 38pts
2’s: Tony Daly, Colm Mullen, Andrew Byrne
And there is the ‘Title Guy’ - Clubmaker to the Stars, Neil Cameron, who
used to be a low single digit handicap in his far removed Aberdeen
youth, made strides to recapture that glory with a mind-boggling 48
points.
This score might never have occurred had Mighty Mouse yielded to his
oath that he would quit the game if he ever reached a handicap that
allowed one stroke a hole. (i.e.18 handicap or above). That black day
occurred in December of 2006. But as Fox News repeatedly points out,
liberals flip-flop on issues and Neil cited that his handicap, which was
17.5, was rounded to eighteen, and, therefore, was in fact not an 18 but
for that mathematical penalty. Therefore he pressed on.
Recent months found him trudging down the Handicap ladder until it stood
on this day at 15 (or 15.4). With today’s fine effort Neil is guaranteed
to at least play through 2009 with a handicap now of 12 (12.4). There’s
no word on whether he used clubs he made.
Lost in the hoopla surrounding Neil, was Gordon ‘The Galloping Golfer”
Kerr and his second place in A Flight, 42 points. Tony Daly was left
only third with his 39 points.
B Flight started off where A Flight ended as Hawaiian land magnate Terry
Wagner topped the list with his own 39 points. Paul Ryan and The Guru of
Green Valley locked it up at 38 points. Only a count back prevented Bob
from adding the moniker The Guru of Greenwood to his vaunted CV.
Friday, November 2, Eastern Star – White Tees,
2-person Better Ball Stableford
A Flight
1st Ross Towers (13) 35pts
2nd Peter Hynard (11) 35pts
B Flight
1st Terry Wagner (18) 34pts
2nd Ed Melott (14) 32pts
2’s: Keith Meehan
Ross “Faulty” Towers and “Fluent in Thai” Peter Hynard shared modest MoM
honors on the day. Ross left Peter only second place in A Flight thanks
to a count back. Terry made it three in a row on the week with a B
Flight victory over mate Ed Melott, by a 34 to 32 count.
Another Monday -
another Jens
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, November 5, Bangpra,
Stableford
1st Jens Gunnarsson 40pts
2nd Dave Howden 34pts
3rd Stephen Snelgrove 34pts
4th Peter Sumner 34pts
Jens Gunnarsson did it again on a Monday and this time it was back to
the 4-under winning score which was enough on the day to take the top
step by six clear strokes.
This was the third time that Jens had recorded forty points on a Monday
in four weeks and the other week he had a score of 38. Whatever he is
doing over the weekend is surely a secret that is worth a lot of beer
and will not be easily discovered as he has now returned to the sea for
a few months.
Dave Howden just kept Stephen Snelgrove and Peter Sumner at bay over the
count backs.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Rodney Nabbe got one on his
own in the first division to sweep the pot.
Wednesday, November 7, Emerald, Stableford
Division 1
1st Brian Libbey 39pts
2nd Roy Thornton 37pts
3rd Steve Bugden 37pts
4th Mike Dabanovich 36pts
5th Norman Isherwood 36pts
Division 2
1st Paul Taylor 36pts
2nd Kiyoto Tanaka 34pts
3rd Paul Hartley 34pts
4th John Harris 34pts
5th Geoff Picken 34pts
A very large number turned out for an excellent day’s golf at the
Emerald where the groundskeeper’s temporary work had foreshortened some
of the holes by as much as 40 yards.
Brian Libbey almost lost the whole lot on the first hole when he went
into the hazard due to the forward tee position, but fortunately all his
playing partners agreed that he gone into the water and could then drop
at the point of entry rather than return to the tee for a stroke and
distance penalty.
In fact the competition turned on that one play, as he managed to garner
two points, otherwise he would have been relegated with Roy Thornton
being promoted to first. In the event Roy had to be content with second
place on count back ahead of Steve Bugden
In the second division it was a far more straightforward result, with
Paul Taylor continuing his past weeks form with a steady level handicap
round to take top spot and leave Kiyoto Tanaka to lead in a group of
four who all had to go through the count back process to decide that
Paul Hartley was ahead of John Harris and Geoff Picken
With so many contenders it was no surprise to find that there were 2’s
aplenty in both divisions. There were four in the second division by
Geoff Picken, Johnny Clements, Peter Carroll and Philippe Berra, whilst
there were five in the first division by John Harris, Steve Bugden, Roy
Thornton, Mike Dabanovich and Stephen Snelgrove.
Friday, November 9, Plutaluang, Stableford
1st Steve Bugden 40pts
2nd Tony Thorne 37pts
3rd Rodney Nabbe 35pts
4th Brian Libbey 33pts
5th Johnny Clements 33pts
There were so many contenders and being unable to get more tee times at
the originally booked course at Eastern Star, two competitions were held
on the day. Unfortunately there were no returns from the Eastern Star
group and a result could not therefore be recorded.
The Plutaluang party all managed to return at some time or another
during the evening. Although it must be said that some were a little
shaky on their pins due to fatigue and stress.
Of these Steve Bugden returned a fine 74 gross which amassed the winning
total by a clear three shots from Tony Thorne. Rodney Nabbe took third
spot on his own with Brian Libbey and Johnny Clements having to be
separated by count back for the final places.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Lyle Blaw and Erik
Donnestad shared the first division with one each.
Liu Gui Lan goes 7-
under at Bangpra
PSC golf from The Bunker
Monday, November 5, Crystal Bay,
Stableford
Monday, and it was off to Crystal Bay for the first
stableford comp of the week. With the high season fast approaching and
the number of golfers increasing the prizes were not to be sniffed at.
In the B Flight new visitor Gary Leigh stole the show with a brilliant
41 points, Reg Smart was in the prizes for the first time taking second
place with 35 points and Jim Wooler claimed third place on a count back
with 34 points.
It was a bit closer in the A Flight where Tony Scambler edged out Mashi
Kaneta by one point to win with 38 points and JJ Harney was third with
34 points.
Jim Treen won one of the near pin prizes along with Geoff Hart but Reg
Smart added to his winnings by claiming the other two!
Wednesday, November 7, Bangpra, Medal
Tony Scambler carried on where he left off on Monday by
winning the A Flight at Bangpra in a medal comp with a five-under par
net 67. This was two-shots better than Geoff Parker who beat John King
on a count back, both on net 69.
In the B Flight another newcomer, lady golfer Liu Gui Lan, had a
fabulous round to win with a superb seven-under par net 65. Second place
went to Brian Maddox level par net 72 and Geoff Hart beat Gordon
Everingham on a count back to finish third with net 74.
Friday, November 9, Greenwood, Stableford
Playing stableford at Greenwood on Friday, Gary Leigh made it
two wins in the week by taking the B Flight with 39 points. Brian Maddox
beat Alan Sullivan on a count back to claim second place after both
finished just one point behind.
Tony Scambler lost out on a count back to Tony Robins who won the A
Flight with 38 points and Mashi Kaneta was third with 37 points.
The near pin prizes were shared between John McDonald, Brian McDonald,
William Macey and Alan Sullivan.
Note: The John Preddy Memorial Tournament will be played on
Friday, November 23 at the Eastern Star Golf Course. To book your

in three divisions as well as the ladies prize to be won each day.
In the top flight, Ted Morris scored 39 points on Day 1 to lead by 2
over Mikael Andersson in second and Andy Mills a further 3 shots behind
in third.
Tarja Kankainen (33pts) held a one-point lead in the second tier whilst
Jill Stanley (30pts) held up the honours for the ladies in C Flight.

2nd Ted Morris 34pts
3rd Chris Holmes 30pts
B Flight
1st Ben Findon 37pts
2nd Dave Ros 35pts

Long Drive: Chris Holmes, Joe Kubon, Anita Davies
2’s: Glyn Evans, Cully Monks
With Ted just two points ahead going into the last day this would
provide an interesting conclusion to the championship. With the greens
as slick as in previous weeks it could be anybody’s title today.
Following the golf everyone returned to Paweenas for the free buffet and
awaited the scores.
In fourth position and beating his other half, which came as a surprise
to everybody, was Ken Foster with 65 points. Finishing with the same
score but with a greater count back on the back six holes was Tarja
Kankainen in third whilst in second place with 73 was the Sheffield lad
Andy Mills. But congratulations all round go to our winner with 75
points, our first day leader Ted Morris.
The ladies tipple, a bottle of strawberry daiquiri, for the worst
misdemeanour over the two rounds was awarded to William Chang for losing
8 balls on the front nine at Eastern Star on Monday. There was also a
free raffle back at the bar for anybody not winning a prize over the two
days but for both winners and losers, it was a great event enjoyed by
all.
Grey Goose Tournament
toasts some old friends
PSC golf from the Beaver Bar & Grill
Trevor Carnahoff
When you take ninety-nine players to a golf course in excellent shape in
balmy weather with the well-oiled PSC organization, you know you are set
for a great day. Such was the case at Emerald Banchang last Saturday,
November 10, when the Beaver Bar & Grill organized the Grey Goose
Memorial Tournament.
PSC
Golf Chairman Tony Oakes (centre) presents the trophy to the winning
team of Keith, Rod, Daniel and Erik.
This event is held annually in memory of some sadly missed friends, all
Banchang regulars, who are no longer with us - Bob Davis, George Davis,
Bob Moberg, Tim McMaster, Don McAllister and Gerry Carpenter.
Unfortunately the last two names had to be added to the memorial shirts
this year and as PSC President Dennis Willett said in his opening
remarks, we all hope that God willing we will not have to lengthen the
sleeves next year.
The tournament format was Texas scramble with team handicaps established
at 15 percent of the combined individual handicaps and the scoring was
exceptionally hot.
The winning team of Keith Whittle, Daniel Ryals, Erik Klasse, and Rod
Carmichael shot a 66 gross and a net score of 51.15, beating out the
second place team of Dennis Willett, Tony Oakes, Phil Taylor and Roger
Coe on count back, also with a net score of 51.15. The second place team
shot an unbelievable 57 gross with 13 birdies and an eagle!
Third and fourth places were also awarded on count back with the team of
Kevin Mitch, Mark Guthrie, Jimmy Little and Mike Sinkenson taking third
with a gross of 62 and net 52.55, beating out everyone’s favourite team
of Trevor Carnahoff, Trevor Whittle, Terry Hove and Tom Rafferty who
shot a 68 gross and the same 52.55 net. The latter team, written off by
the pundits, had a real scrambling day highlighted by Trevor Whittle’s
miraculous chip-in on hole #3.
Technical prizes were won by Russell Exley, Steve Coulson, Trevor
Whittle, Tony Oakes, Ramsey Smith and Geoff Tummons.
With the steady hand of Bernie Tuppin handling the check-in and scoring,
the results were delivered in good time back at the Beaver Bar where a
tented arena organized with the help of Rainbow Bar housed a very happy
group of golfers and friends who dined on the traditional roast pig with
all of the trimmings.
Manager Larry Willett had his well-trained staff hopping all night
delivering beverages and food to the parched golfing gladiators, while
Nigel Cannon made his usual peppy delivery in awarding the golf prizes
and lucky draw prizes, including a veritable pallet of high-end spirits
donated by the generous Banchang community.
As usual the frivolities carried on until the small hours of the morning
ending a wonderful day watched we are sure on high by those in whose
memory the tournament is held.
So Near - and yet so Far!
Café Kronborg - ‘Bjarne’s Birthday Scramble’ 2007
Derek Brook
Monday, November 5, Burapha C & D (Scramble)
For this year’s competition we were to play at Burapha, and
the fact that the ‘club professional’ happened to be a member of
Bjarne’s family (and team) may have had something to do with it. But
would the team of the ‘Birthday Boy’ this year be in contention? It
would be nice if he were to win his own competition.
It’s
that ‘Hole-in-One’ girl - Carole Kubicki.
As said, with the ‘club pro’ playing with us we were always going to get
the best of treatment, and so it proved to be. Even so, thanks go to
Burapha for their input, and for the condition of the C & D Nines, which
were in great shape.
So off we went, eighty-eight of us, half on the C Nine and half on the D
Nine, into a strong wind. The wind proved to be a nuisance all day, but
as usual when the going gets tough, some manage to hang in. With a
booked course the teams managed to get around nice and quick, and it was
a pleasure to play. Some of the views from D8 and D9 are absolutely
outstanding and playing ‘scramble’ you have plenty of time to smell the
roses.
Round over it was a quick shower, then into the restaurant, where Dave
sat. There he collected the cards and started to work out who was going
to win. Straight from the start the card of ‘The Birthday Boy’s Team’
came in, and it was so good that subject to a disaster it had to win and
Bjarne would win his own competition. Well a disaster happened, and the
team remembered they had put one score down wrong and had to be
disqualified. Golf is a game of trust and much credit must go to the
team for their honesty.
Back at the Cafe Kronborg the place was packed with hungry golfers
awaiting the food. As it was laid out the smells were tempting, and the
stampede of players was, as is normal. This was one of the best buffets
for years.
Once the food was dealt with Dave started the presentation by thanking
all who helped, and of course the obligatory ‘Happy Birthday’ rang out.
Bjarne in response wished all the best and said next year, this day will
a bowling competition, as he cannot be disqualified. So near and so far
but well played.
So to the results: In third place was the team of Dave Addison, Joe
Vanderwagen, Kevin Dinan and Tom Cotton with a net 57.9. In second was
the team of Earnst Hansen, Mordie Nielsen, Kari Kristen and Guido Wagner
with a fine net 55.9. The big winners were Lumpy Russel, Lumpy Myers,
Trevor ‘D’ and Bill Marsden with an excellent 55.6. The team thanked the
‘Birthday Boy’ for not winning and went on to enjoy their night.
The night then heated up as Dave did the ‘Lucky Draw’, however I have
saved the best for last, as we had a ‘Hole in One’ during the day as
Carole Kubicki aced the C5 for her first ever hole in one. Well done
Carole! T.T.F.N.
Near Pin: Carole Kubicki (Hole in One), Wayne Koch, Mordie
Nielsen, Joe vanderwagon
Long Put: Henry O’Brien, Bill Marsden
‘The Admiral’
congratulates the day’s winning team.
A treat at Greenwood
Golf from the Bowling Green
Gareth Weeks
Monday, November 5, Greenwood, Stableford
As the courses are now back to their high season prices, our
group headed off to play Greenwood for the first of this week’s
stableford competitions.
Wednesday’s
winners pose with two lovely ladies from the Bowling Green, Pattaya.
With a gentle wind blowing throughout the day, and a golf course which
is in pristine condition, (fairways in super nick and fast rolling
greens) the test of the day was to be the A and B nines.
Later back at the Bowling Green with all results in, the winner of the
day was declared as yours truly, Gareth Weeks, with a well earned 36
points and in second was Mark Brenton on 34 points, closely followed by
Alan Griffiths and Peter Rolex. It was a good effort by all on the day.
Friday, November 9, Eastern Star, Stableford
The test for the day on this fine morning was to be Eastern
Star, and our crew headed down the Sukhumvit highway in anticipation of
playing a course that many of us hadn’t visited in a while.
After a slight hold up on the first tee we were away, with the course
back to its former self, fairways generally in good condition although a
little dry in places, and medium paced greens, our 4½ hour round was
enjoyed by all.
Back at the Bowling Green the results were finalized and the winners of
the day were announced. In first place with 33 points was Mike Herridge,
whilst second place went to went to “Big” Andy Griffiths on a count back
over Mark Brenton. Well done boys.
