Over thirty brave souls attend PCEC meeting during Songkran week

This week’s meeting of the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) on Sunday, April 11th was at the temporary location in the Rim Suan Room of the Amari’s Garden Wing while their regular meeting place is undergoing renovation. The PCEC prides itself on having had continuous weekly meetings since its inception in early 2001. So, when last week’s meeting fell during Pattaya’s Songkran festival, the meeting was still held notwithstanding the likelihood of getting very wet. Although a very low turnout, there still were over thirty brave souls in attendance. Club Secretary David Meador assumed the role of coordinator for the meeting and kept things moving at a steady pace.

PCEC board member David Meador, MC for the day, introduces Duncan Macintosh (not shown) to talk about the work of the World Society for the Protection of Animals.

The scheduled speaker, Phil Woolham, a director at the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) headquartered in London, was unable to attend. No, it wasn’t the fear of getting wet that kept him away; rather it was that nasty volcano in Iceland and its atmospheric ash that grounded most aircraft in the United Kingdom and much of Europe. Thus, his planned flight from London was canceled. Phil expressed his regrets and said he hoped to speak to the Club at a later date.

Duncan, an Australian financial wizard and WSPA supporter with a keen interest in reducing animal suffering, talked on the progress being made by WSPA in China where bears, and other animals, are used to supply a demand for animal parts and products.

Although Phil was unavailable, frequent Pattaya visitor and Club member Duncan Macintosh was able to fill in. Duncan is an Australian financial wizard and WSPA supporter with a keen interest in reducing animal suffering. His talk was focused on the progress being made by WSPA in China where bears, and other animals, are used to supply a demand for animal parts and products. These products are used for medicinal purpose and an imagined enhancement for sexual performance. He specifically commented on the fate of bears that are kept in tiny cages for up to 30 years in order to extract the bile produced in their liver and stored in their gallbladder. He also mentioned other practices in Asia that cause suffering to the animals involved, including their slow, painful killing in the belief that it improves the flavor of the meat.

Local identity Thor Halland advises PCEC members of progress with a soi dog rescue program for Pattaya.

Many of these countries do not have laws against such practices and do not enforce the provisions against animal cruelty of world treaties that they have signed. Duncan noted that some of these countries, China in particular, are sensitive to criticisms about barbaric practices. He said that WSPA is not against the killing of animals, but believe it should be done in a proper and humane manner. One of their main goals is to eradicate the inhumane treatment of animals. He passed out several petition forms for members and guests to sign. He said he believes that putting world political pressure on countries, especially China, is the way to get them to change. WSPA has a local office in Bangkok and their website is at http://www. wspa-international.org/default.aspx

By abbreviating some of the more routine aspects of the meeting, David concluded it about 30 minutes earlier than usual; thus allowing everyone to depart in time to avoid the worst of the day’s Songkran madness.
