PATTAPA SPORTS ROUND-UP

Kenyans run away with revamped Pattaya Marathon

Crowds of spectators and runners gather outside
Pattaya City Hall prior to the start of the event.

Vimolrat Singnikorn

The revamped and renamed 17th “Power Plus” Pattaya Marathon was held in almost ideal running conditions last Sunday morning, July 18, with the slightly overcast skies providing some welcome relief to the elite athletes and less able foot-sloggers who woke up early to pound their way around the city’s streets.

Women’s marathon winner Fridah Tepkite Lodepa receives the Queen’s Cup trophy from Pattaya City Mayor, Itthiphol Kunplome.

In keeping with local tradition here, the race was once more dominated by the visiting Kenyan runners who filled the top ten positions of the main marathon event and also provided the winner in the women’s field.

Kenyan male runner Maisei Julius Kipilmo won the overall race in a time of 2:23:13, to set a benchmark for the new course this year that featured fewer hills for the runners to negotiate and more chances for spectators to see the action. The marathon (42km) and half-marathon (21km) followed a circuit from Pattaya City Hall, up to Naklua Soi 18 and back along Beach Road to Pratamank Road. Athletes then returned along Second Road to City Hall. Marathoners made four laps while those in the half-marathon did two.

Maisei Julius Kipilmo was the overall marathon winner.

More than 10,000 athletes including large entries from Ethiopia, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Taiwan and other countries turned out for the early-morning event, which also featured quarter and wheelchair marathons and a 5km. race for runners under age 15.

Chonburi Gov. Senee Jittakasem and Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome fired the opening gun to set the runners on their way with VIP guests, including the former Tourism and Sports Minister Sonthaya Kunplome, and Lt. Gen. ML Parsopchai Kasemsan, the vice president of the Athletic Association of Thailand, also in attendance.

Half marathon winner Sanchai Naamket.

Kenyan Kipilmo was followed across the finishing line outside Pattaya City Hall by compatriots Charles Mwai Kenyao (2:23:26), Soibei Richard Kiprotich (2:23:34) and Robert Kilagat Kosgei (2:25:01), who finished in second, third and fourth places respectively. The winner received the prestigious King’s Cup trophy along with a cheque for 200,000 baht from Pattaya Mayor, Itthiphol.

The best placed local male runner was former Thai champ Bunthung Srisang, who crossed the finish line in a personal best time of 2:32:56. He won 70,000 baht after finishing in 11th place overall.

Sunisa Sailomyen.

A future marathon winner?

In the women’s event, last year’s winner Sunisa “Ped” Sailomyen from Thailand had to be content with the runner-up spot this year as she trailed in just under 3 minutes behind the Kenyan winner, Fridah Tepkite Lodepa. The 20 year old African runner finished in a time of 2:54:10 and received the Queen’s Cup trophy and 200,000 baht for her efforts while Sailomyen picked up the consolation of winning the award for best female Thai athlete.

There was better news for Thailand in the half-marathon event where first place was taken by Sanchai Naamket in a very respectable time of 1:11:44. He finished a full 2 minutes clear of the runner up, Kenyan Mokoa Jared Masita.

The race this year was Pattaya’s final prep before next year’s event, which will coincide with the Asian Marathon Championships.

Chonburi Gov. Senee Jittakasem and Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome set the athletes on their way.

Runners are wished good luck at the start
and later celebrate as they cross the finish line.

Junior takes the easy way to complete the course.

Ludovick strike seals the points for United

Staff Reporters

Pattaya United secured a hard fought 1-0 win against TOT Cat FC at a revamped Nongprue stadium last Saturday in a match that suffered a 15 minute second half interruption caused by a floodlight failure.

Pattaya United striker Ludovick, right, holds off TOT Cat defender Theerachai Ngamcharoen, left, during the Thai Premier League match at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya, Saturday, July 17. (Photo/ Ariyawat Nuamsawat)

United began the game in bright fashion (to pardon the pun) and it wasn’t long before Theerawesin Seehawong tested the reflexes of TOT’s Cameroonian goalkeeper Jean-Marc Engoulou. The United midfielder picked up the ball in center field and unleashed a 25 yard dipping shot that Engoulou acrobatically tipped over the bar.

TOT, despite wallowing in mid-table in the league, were not just there to make up the numbers however and they created two good opportunities of their own with long range efforts from Slovakian Tomแ? Kozแr and Georgian Georgi Tsimakuridze going just wide of the Pattaya goal.

Spurred on by a vocal home support, Pattaya had one further chance in a competitive first half when Somchai Singmanee fired in a 30 yard screamer that grazed the TOT crossbar.

In the second half it was the visitors who started the stronger with Wichan Nantasri forcing a great diving save from Narit in the 52nd minute. However it would be left to the home team to break the deadlock just 3 minutes later through top scorer Ludovick. The Cameroon striker picked up the ball on the left wing and sent over a pinpoint crossfield ball to Singmanee whose cross was met by the head of United’s Patipol Phetwiset. The TOT keeper somehow managed to block Phetwiset’s initial effort but Ludovick was lurking close by to turn in the rebound.

In what was becoming an open second half, TOT center half Mariแn Juhแs saw his point-blank header from a corner kick blocked on the line by Pattaya defenders on the hour mark and at the other end Ludovick spurned a golden chance to double United’s and his own goal tally when he blasted over from 10 yards out with just the TOT keeper to beat.

There then followed a 15 minute delay as a transformer feeding power to the stadium blew and the ground was pitched into darkness. When the electricity was eventually restored both teams decided to make substitutions and brought off Tomแ? Kozแr and Wutthisak Maneesook who had been waging a running battle with each other prior to the unscheduled delay. Pattaya replaced Maneesook with striker Tana Chanabut who was making his first appearance since injuring his hand against Sisaket FC three weeks ago.

Chanabut’s appearance certainly had the effect of galvanizing the Pattaya forward line and he came close to getting on the score sheet himself on 77 minutes when he played a clever one-two with Ludovick but he volleyed the return straight at the TOT keeper.

The visitors had the last clear cut chance of the game on 80 minutes when midfielder Yuttana Chaikaew headed just wide of the Pattaya goal from a right wing cross. Thereafter United were able to play out the remaining 10 minutes of the match without any further serious threats to their goal.

In other matches over the weekend, Chonburi FC let slip their lead at the top of the standings with a shock one nil defeat away at Thai Army who moved off the bottom of the league on the back of their victory. Muang Thong United were the main benefactors of Chonburi’s defeat as they crushed Sisaket 6-0 to move three points clear at the top. Buriram remain the only undefeated team in the league after they scored a one nil away victory at Osotspa M-150.

Pattaya United’s next match is a local derby this coming Sunday, July 25, away at Navy Rayong FC with kick off at 5 p.m. Chonburi meanwhile play leaders Muang Thong on the same day at the Chonburi Stadium in what should be the match of the weekend.

Nongprue Municiplity announces charity boxing event

Young fighters attend the press conference
to announce the July 24 boxing tournament.

Thanachot Anuwan

A charity boxing tournament will be held on Saturday, July 24 to help raise funds for the Nongprue Volunteer Civil Defense against Drugs welfare campaign.

A press conference was held on July 15 to announce the contest and was chaired by My Chainit, the Mayor of the Muang Nongprue Municipality. Chainit said that economic, social and political conditions have turned some young members of society towards drugs and life of crime and he hopes the sporting contest can provide funds for the local people with problems to be invited into training for Volunteer Civil Defense, or in short called Or Por Por Ror. This is for supporting government operations and work and training has already been completed for 5 groups numbering some 442 people.

The boxing contest will be held from 8 p.m. onwards at a venue behind Tesco Lotus in Central Pattaya and will feature 10 separate bouts in different weight and age categories. It is expected that both Thai and foreign tourists interested in boxing will attend the charity event.

Cooney bags back to back wins

PSC golf form The Bunker Bar

Monday, July 12, Khao Kheow - Stableford

Playing stableford, the scores were very close today with only one point separating the top three. It took a count back to separate William Macey and Roger Privett, William coming out on top to take the runner up spot, while Gerry Cooney narrowly took the win with a point more than those two.

Double winner Gerry Cooney with Friday’s winner Roger Privett in the background.

Mashi and Colin Greig shared the near pins, getting two apiece.
1st Gerry Cooney (11) 34pts
2nd William Macey (16) 33pts
3rd Roger Privett (17) 33pts
Wednesday, July 14, Burapha - Medal

Playing a Medal round today, Gerry Cooney slaughtered the field winning by a massive ten shots with a two under par score on his card! PJ Redmond claimed second place by way of a countback ahead of Colin Greig in third place.

1st Gerry Cooney (11) net 70
2nd PJ Redmond (18) net 80
3rd Colin Greig (12) net 80
Friday, July 16, Green Valley - Medal

Gerry Cooney had a good start to the week, winning at Burapha and Khao Kheow, but he was away trying his luck at Treasure Hill in the Pattaya Sports Club Monthly Medal today and Roger Privett took advantage by winning with 38 stableford points. Eddie Martin was second three points back and Peter Habgood came third a further three points behind.

Geoff Parker claimed one of the near pins and Eddie Martin won two with the fourth green not hit.

1st Roger Privett (17) 38pts
2nd Eddie Martin 35pts
3rd Peter Habgood 32pts

Brits retain the ‘Roo Cup’

PSC Golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Joey’s column

Monday, July 12, Burapha – Stableford

The 30 Outbackers faced the Cypress (white tees) & Augusta (blue tees) nines and most of them complained how difficult the course is becoming as the fairways seem to be getting narrower and narrower and the rough longer and longer, particularly on Cypress. Nevertheless, two played better than handicap, Art O’Connor, who won Div A with an excellent 38 points and notably Paul Smith (runner up) with a fine one over gross 73.

Rogan & John (The Kiwis) flank Steve Milne with the ‘Roo Cup’.

The Brits have been holding the ‘Roo Cup’ for some time but the Kiwi pair of John Low and Rogan Hampson had some other ideas about for how much longer. It was a closely fought match going right to the wire as Steve Milne & Andy Butterworth clinched victory on the 18th to win by the narrowest of margins, 1 up.

Div B was a story of low scoring as the shorter hitters and higher handicappers were punished by the conditions with the exception of Steve Milne, the winner with 36 points; as he was six points clear of the next placed guys, Donny Everett and Christophe.

There were a load of ‘2’s coming from Mark McDonald, Don Everett, Steve Budrys, Art O’Connor, John Low, Tony Garnett & Capt’ Bob.

Div A (0–15)
1st Art O’Connor (14) 38pts
2nd Paul Smith (3) 38pts
3rd Tony Garnett (10) 36pts
4th Bob Maloney (13) 36pts
Div B (16+)
1st Steve Milne (17) 36pts
2nd Don Everett (26) 30pts
3rd Christophe (28) 30pts
4th Eldridge Suggs (18) 29pts

Monday, July 12, Green Valley - Stableford

Today the alternate Monday for the Outback Golf Bar was Green Valley, only seven Outbackers played as some of our regulars were out of town celebrating a birthday.

The course was again in great shape but only one person shot better than their handicap and he was Ray Dell, shooting 37 points to win, with Barry McIntosh right on his heels (they played together) with 36 points.

Suzi Lawton, just returning from her vacation in America, had a ‘2’ as did Joe Mooneyham, the day’s organiser.

There is no alternate on 26th July as it is a Thai Holiday. So we return here on 2nd August, and Joe Mooneyham will as usual have vouchers with Green Fee 600 Bt, caddie 250 Bt.

1st Ray Dell (12) 37pts
2nd Barry McIntosh (17) 36pts
3rd David Day (19) 32pts

Tuesday, July 13, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

An excellent turnout of 22 Outbackers showed up at Pattaya Country Club on a day that turned out to be one of slow play, courtesy of some group out the front that even had to call a five-ball through and of high humidity. There was no rain although there were some dark clouds around and the course was in reasonable shape, with signs of further work being done to the edges of bunkers and the greens recovering slowly from the recent hollow tining; however a couple of them (7th and 16th) were pretty dreadful.

The resident Tues organiser, Barry Chadbourn, who was standing on the sixteenth tee with 34 points already on his card, proceeded to throw out the anchor almost too far as he failed to score on both the 16th and 17th before birdying the 18th for 4 points and a total of 38, the day’s top score. Little did he know then, that he would win Div A by six from four players all on 32; second going to Billy Fitzgerald and third to ‘The Golf Club’s’ golf organiser, Brad Sproxton, who was here on a recce and to discuss the upcoming Ryder Cup event due here in Pattaya in September.

Welcome back to Dion Lane, having his first game with his Kiwi mates but no sign yet of his single figure handicap form of last year, and goodbye to the two Sharjah ladies, Maddie & Jane, who were having their last game with the Outback and have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, vowing to return next year.

Regular PCC player, Terry Marney, took Div B with a steady 36 points ahead of Dave Spendley (35pts) and Alan Pearce (34pts) who beat his playing partner, Arthur Bailey, on countback.

There were just two ‘2’s, one from Chad and the other from General Jack.

Div A (0–18)
1st Barry Chadbourn (17) 38pts
2nd Billy Fitzgerald (16) 32pts
3rd Brad Sproxton (9) 32pts
Div B (19+)
1st Terry Marney (28) 36pts
2nd David Spendley (23) 35pts
3rd Alan Pearce (23) 34pts

Wednesday, July 14, Phoenix - Stableford

An International field of 19 Outbackers at Phoenix, playing the Mountain and Lake nines, comprised of 10 Aussies, 4 Kiwis, 3 Brits, and an Irishman and a Belgian.

The scoring was fairly ordinary with a couple of bright spots appearing in Div A with both Murray Hart, who has been in the frame a lot in recent weeks and Tony McDonough playing to handicap with 36 points apiece. Keith Buchanan’s been knocking on the door in his recent outings and today he made it to the top of Div B with 35 points to win by three from Bob Lindborg and Ivan Plunkett one point further back.

There were no ‘2’s.

Div A (0-16)
1st Murray Hart (15) 36pts
2nd Tony McDonough (13) 36pts
3rd John Low (13) 35pts
4th Paul Greenaway (10) 33pts
Div B (17+)
1st Keith Buchanan (18) 35pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (19) 32pts
3rd Ivan Plunkett (20) 31pts
4th Bruce McAdam (22) 30pts

Friday, July 16, Laem Chabang - Stableford

Thirty-three Outbackers played today on the A and B nines from the white tees, providing some excellent scoring, particularly in the A division. Andy Butterworth led the way with 41 points, giving him a comfortable win from the two of the visiting Kiwis, John Low (37pts) and Dion Lane (36pts). Capt’ Bob (35pts) was fourth after a six way countback.

Div B was won by Murray Hart, playing his last game for a couple of weeks as he heads home to Aus and surely will return to find himself with a brand new handicap, given his form of late. His 42 points was the top score of the day from in second, Ian Jones (39pts) with Christophe (38pts) in third and these three were a long way clear of the fourth placed man, Bob Lindborg on 32.

There was a ‘jackpot 2’ bagged by Andy Butterworth.

Div A (0-14)
1st Andy Butterworth (13) 41pts
2nd John Low (13) 37pts
3rd Dion Lane (13) 36pts
4th Bob Philp (8) 35pts
Div B (15+)
1st Murray Hart (15) 42pts
2nd Ian Jones (21) 39pts
3rd Christophe (28) 38pts
4th Bob Lindborg (19) 32pts

Buckingham on the mark at Pattana

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top three: Graham Buckingham,
Brian Gabe and Derek Brook with one of Bert’s helpers.

Derek Brook

Tuesday, July 13, Pattana A & B – Stableford

I thought there was something strange going on when Pattana contacted me last month and asked me to confirm we would be playing on that day. Of course as we had scheduled it I confirmed and we turned up on time for our 1009 hrs Tee time. All was then revealed as we were told we would be following the Thai L.P.G.A. competition, but we were not to get too close.

On the Tee at A1 we had to wait until the ladies were a couple of holes ahead until we were allowed to go by the three starters who then kept an eye on us to ensure we did not get too close. So it was a nice amble around on a course that was in first class condition. If it is good enough for the L.P.G.A. it’s good enough for us. In fact we played off the tees where the ladies played off essentially. I say essentially because many of the markers had been moved to the side and I had to replace them. It is nice to know that the yellow tees that we play off at 6,500 yards are what these slim young ladies bang the ball past us on.

Still we were around in about 4 hrs 30 mins and it proved a great day out on a course in top condition.

Back at Bert’s we also saw that the scores were also quite good and Ted Morris who shot a level round of 36 points just missed out. So the winner with 40 points was Graham (The Treasure) Buckingham ahead of Brian Gabe with 38 points. We then had a two-way countback on 37 points that saw yours truly in third and Bill Knight in fourth.

Near Pins went to Daryl Evans, Graham Buckingham, Mick O’Meara and Al Laurie.

With Bert’s happy hour and ‘Golfers Special’ to finish things off is completed a fine day out. T.T.F.N.

Bland scorches to weekly double

PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar & Grill

Steve, Nat, John, Don and Nigel toast Chicka on his 4th place at Green Valley.

Monday, July 12, Green Valley – Stableford
1st Don Bland (5) 41pts
2nd Tom Breslin (22) 37pts
3rd Brad Sproxton (9) 35pts
4th Chicka Smith (16) 35pts

Overcast conditions plagued the field today but still some great scoring occurred. Don Bland played a great game and finished with gross 72 and 41 points for the win. Well done Don! Tom Breslin was on form as well and came in second with a fine 37 points. Brad Sproxton was third with 35, beating out the “quiet gentleman from Oz” Chicka Smith on count back.

Wednesday, July 14, Siam Plantation – Stableford
1st Don Bland (4) 38pts
2nd Jon Lay (7) 32pts
3rd Tim Lazecki (27) 31pts

We had a smaller group join us today at Plantation (B & C) but the fine play of Don Bland continued. Don shot another near par round and for 38 points to take the plaudits once more. Jon Lay battled out 19 points on the back nine to take second place and Tim Lazecki played steadily to finish on 31 points for third.

Thanks to all who joined us today - lots of laughs on and off the golf course.

McLachlan lifts Monthly Medal

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s

Sunday, July 11, Green Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Clinton Hazlett (11) net 72
2nd Vic Hester (13) net72
B Flight
1st Keith McLachlan (22) net 68
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) net70
Red Flight
1st Mike Craighead (15) net 79
2nd Kathy Doody (19) net 79

Near Pins: No4 Gareth Gill, No9 Benn Nelson, No12 Bob Newell, No16 John Dearden.

Lewiinski’s golfing damsels: Yui Bietry and Sim Davis.

Clinton Hazlett, who hails from Sydney, Australia, headed to the ‘land of smiles’ after a breakdown of his marriage to replenish his pockets and look for a bit of romance, and while one is assured the other is not. Clinton did the hard task here at Green Valley, taking the bulk of the pocket money to win the senior flight on a countback over the unlucky Vic Hester.

A skip down to the junior flight provided the monthly medal winner, Keith McLachlan, who returned a best of the day net 68 to relegate Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’ Henshaw to the runner up spot.

For some reason the Red Flight never seemed to get going today, perhaps it was because they had all qualified. As our frequent players and readers are aware, all monthly medal winners and ties qualify for the Gold Medal scheduled for just after the year’s end. While Keith will be a welcome addition to the senior flight, Mike has five non-transferable tickets for this gala.

Clint was last seen hoping and skipping down Soi 6.

Tuesday, July 13, Siam Old Course - Stableford
1st Tim Lazecki 38pts
2nd Simon Spalding (2) 34pts

We don’t get a chance to go to the venerable Siam Old Course often, but the proximity is a hit with all, especially those who are planning a big Wednesday evening.

Tim Lazecki fashioned a solid 35 points to take the day’s only prize. Frequent visitor Simon Spalding, who plays off a stingy enough handicap of plus two, came in a point short of Tim for second.

Vic Hester (x2) and our Jim’s brother Barry Elphick shared the ‘2’s pot

Wednesday, July 14, Bangpra - Stableford
1st John Haddon (15) 34pts
2nd Seamus Cotter (12) 33pts

John Haddon brought the gang home through the marauding monkeys of Bangpra. He cleared Seamus ‘the captain’ by one stroke to top the podium. Seamus in turn gained a countback verdict over ‘Sugar babe’ Yui Bietry 18/14.

Seamus Cotter (x2), Yui Bietry and Charles Bennett shared the ‘2’s pot.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us, just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Reed cans an ‘Ace’ at Century

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Stuart Rifkin

Monday, July 12, Century Chonburi - Stableford

There were only seven names down for our listed course on Monday, so a course change saw us switch the outing to Century Chonburi. The day before the event we had 32 names down to play so the change seemed to be welcomed by our group. We had not been to this venue for over 18 months but we had all heard many stories recently about the condition of the course, so the consensus was that we should go and check it out.

Hole-in-one hero Chris Reed poses with the division winners Miss Noi, Chris Voller and Cully Monks.

There were three cancellations overnight through medicinal problems and one no show on the first tee, so there were in total 7 groups of 4 out today.

Noi Emmerson warmed up for the annual IPGC Club Championship at Khao Kheow later in the week with a whopping 43 points to win the ladies competition. Nom Foster came in second some way back on 29 points.

After his two month holiday back in Ireland, and a few late nights here in Jomtien, Cully Monks bounced straight back to form to win Division 2 with an even par 36 points. Miss Nom was smiling again as the ‘old man’ came in second with 32 points and Joe Kubon was third just one point further behind.

The ‘birdie boys’ fought it out for first place in Division 1 with Chris Voller beating Mikael Andersson on a 17/14 back nine countback after they both came in with 32 points each. There were three players in contention for third place on 28 points - ‘Countback’ Burnie, Bill Hewitt and Bob Poole – and it was left to Bob to edge out the other two with a better back six. We say goodbye to Burnie now as this was his last game before his departure back to China.

Near Pins were claimed by Miss Kung, Bob Poole, Chris Reed, Miss Nom, Chris Voller, David Phillips and Miss Noi.

In the ‘2’s there were two rollovers in both divisions from Pattaya Country Club plus today’s imput, but this was all won by Chris Reed after his amazing shot on the par three fourth, a hole in one and his first ever ‘Ace’. The screams from the two girls he was playing with were heard all over the course, congratulations Chris! Two weeks more and it would have been a year since the last one was recorded at Jomtien Golf by Keith Hector, how does time fly by. The bell was well and truly rung back at Siam Cats later.

Ken has a ‘Pleasant’ birthday

PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Tuesday, July 13, Green Valley - Stableford

Tuesday dawned with clear skies as we set off for our visit to Green Valley, where the course had been re-arranged (again), but was in very good condition with well grassed, smooth fairways and true, rolling greens.

John Swanson and ‘Birthday Boy’ Ken Hole toast Ken’s successful week.

A couple of late arrivers for their previously organised game with another bar joined us today, welcome to Brian and Gareth. Ken Hole (15) showed some decent form, especially on the back nine, where his 19 points secured a countback victory over newcomer Brian Wilkinson (12) with 15, after both had scored 35 points.

The technical prizes were picked up by Jeff, with 2, while Gareth and Allan (who is heading back to Australia for 3 months) got 1 each.

Thursday, July 15, Pleasant Valley - Stableford

Thursday saw a small group head up to Pleasant Valley for our monthly trip to this apparently polarizing course; some hate it, some love it. Following some recent greens maintenance over the last 2 months the course was once again found to be in good condition, and is ever improving.

With the small field we had a front nine, back nine and overall prize fund, with a reduction in technical prizes. Jeff Wylie (5) & Ken Hole (15) shared the front nine with 17 points each, while Ken kicked well clear on the back, with 21, to scoop up the back nine and overall with a creditable 38 points.

Jeff and Ken each got a near pin, and no, Jeff and Ken were not the only players, it’s just that the other boys struggled and one who shall remain nameless drowned 10 golf balls, while another was not far behind.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday & Thursday (we sometimes change to accommodate a Thai Holiday). Presentations are made at the course on Tuesday, with Mulligans Lakeside hosting the Thursday presentation. For more details on scheduling etc., please call Jeff on 089 094 1841 or Ray on 081 935 8088. Hope to see you there, Cheers & Good Golfing!

Arnold shoots best of the day

PSC golf with the Three Sisters Bar

Once again Mother Nature spared the Three Sisters golfing group as they teed off this past July 14 at the Pattaya Country Club. Partly sunny but mainly overcast skies made for a comfortable round on a course that was in good shape, except for Hole 16 that was aerated and sanded.

Wednesday winner Arnold Van Der Graff, left, with runner-up Herbie Ishinage.

Back at Caddy Shack II a tally of the cards showed that Arnold Van Der Graff had the best of the day, winning with 39 points. He was followed in the pecking order by Herbie Ishinaga with an even par 36. Close behind these two were Dale Murphy and Kevin Worl, both with 34 points apiece.

The aprés golf food was great, the beverages better, and the company just great.

3rd Don Wilson 30pts

On Wednesday at Bangpra Golf Course, Graham Beaumont secured his first win in a while, narrowly beating David Hausman by a single point in the stableford competition. Don Wilson rounded out the podium in third place, some six points behind the winner.

Friday, July 16, Green Valley - Stableford

1st Damien Trant 39pts
2nd Vince Smyth 38pts
Div. 2
1st Ben Findon 37pts
2nd Don Wilson 34pts

Green Valley was the venue on Friday and Damien Trant continued his winning form with another sub-par round to take first place in Division 1. Vince Smyth put up a good battle to finish just one point behind Damian for second place.

This was the first week for a while we had two divisions and Ben Findon took advantage to take top spot in the second tier with a one under par thirty seven points.

Bernie battles on for monthly award

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Stuart Rifkin

Thursday, August 15, Phoenix – Stroke/Monthly Mug

There were 15 brave souls who were loaded into the buses at 9.15 a.m. sharp by the Admiral (Dave Richardson) to dual for the Caf้ Kronborg monthly mug stroke event held at the lovely and picturesque Phoenix golf course. Brave for two reasons; one being the suspected inclement wet weather and the other being that many of the players would have been “under the weather” due to the previous nights PSC Summer Party held at the Town in Town Hotel off Pattaya Klang Road. The PSC committee should be congratulated for putting on a terrific night with excellent food, drinks and entertainment provided, not to mention the many fabulous lucky door prizes of which at least 20 attendees were lucky enough to win.

Bernie Seagrave, left, receives his substitute Monthly Mug from the ‘Admiral’ Dave Richardson.

The first group teed off about 9.40 to tackle the Mountain and Lake courses and as predicted the heavens opened up after only six holes. The first group took refuge in the nearby drinks station for 40 minutes as the rain hammered down. Undeterred, groups two and three played through the first group during some lighter moments only to find themselves sheltering also after a few holes as the rain increased in severity for a further 20 minutes. The course drained very well and the greens maintained their form despite the minor flooding they just received.

Eventually the storm moved away, the sun shone through and so did some of the scores, surprisingly! All players managed to complete their round although the rain delays made for a long game.

We welcomed back Mike Allidi and friends and said farewell to ‘Big’ John Naponick who returns to Cambodia to complete his commitments to the Ministry of Health there, upon which he will retire and be back in Thailand to continue with his love of playing golf.

The net winner today was a “wounded golfer!” Sure enough the favorite adage was again predictable as with a heavily bandaged infected right forearm Bernie Seagrave battled to a fine 67 and easily took home the Monthly Mug. (Well not really, as the new shipment of pewter mugs had not yet arrived so a stand-in mug was used for presentation purposes). Fear not Bernie as your mug will be delivered to you as soon as the new ones are received.

Four others were in the rundown of the day’s honors list with Graham Buckingham coming in as ‘best of the rest with a fine 71’, Mike Allidi came second with 72 and Takeshi Hakozaki took out third on a count back with John Naponick, each with 74.

The dreaded Compass Cap was won by Brian Gabe who stated he should have left the PSC party a lot earlier! The donated total for this award, which will see all proceeds going to a children’s charity here in Pattaya at the end of the year, now stands at 2,360 baht.

‘Rare bird’ makes an appearance at Emerald

Golf from the Travellers Rest

Reporter Barry Hooper

When I was a young student my teacher told me about a bird that was rarely seen, unfortunately I will be darned if I can remember its name. Well we have a golfer in our midst that is a bit like that bird, his name however I do know and it is Richard Talbot. He has played with us over twenty times but never been anywhere near the winner’s circle. Well that has all changed.

Richard Talbot, Andy Turner and Liam Horgan support the Saturday winner Mod Chaviraksa.

For the first time, whilst here in Thailand, Richard made a podium placing with second position at our outing on Saturday to Emerald. Upon investigation he told me that he heralds from Stoke on Trent and plays at the Foxhills course. He was very excited at his success and took a lot of ribbing from fellow players at the presentation. The downside was that he was beaten by a lady, namely Mod Chaviraksa, who I must say is playing some extremely good golf these days and truly deserved the win.

Monday, July 12, Bangpra - Stableford
1st John Franklin (12) 36pts
2nd Fergus Brennan (10) 33pts
3rd Robert Cannon (23) 31pts
4th Gerry Swan (14) 30pts

A small group visited Bangpra on Monday and I have it on record that the course was in reasonable shape and played long and difficult.

John Franklin carried on where he left off from the previous week by taking the win with thirty-six points and he was followed in by Fergus Brennan, who, as I reported previously, does not seem to be able to consistently find form these days. Third place went to Bob Cannon at thirty-one and in fourth was Gerry Swan at thirty. Gerry also recorded the only ‘2’ on the day as well.

Wednesday, July 14, Green Valley – Stableford
1st George Smith (16) 38pts
2nd Amphan North (11) 34pts
3rd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 33pts
4th Andy Turner (23) 32pts

On Wednesday (yes Wednesday, not our regular Tuesday) we ventured out to Green Valley with a small group of players. The change of day did not seem to affect George Smith who took a good win with thirty-eight points, four clear of second placed Amphan North. Third spot went to that other regular lady player Mod Chaviraksa with thirty-three.

A single ‘2’ was recorded this time from Amphan North

Thursday, July 15, Phoenix – Stableford
Div. 1
1st George Robinson (12) 36pts
2nd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 34pts
3rd Brian Wilkinson (13) 34pts
Div. 2
1st Paul Mades (18) 35pts
2nd Alan Evans (25) 32pts
3rd Barry Cooke (14) 31pts

Thursday saw us take our usual trip out to Phoenix to play the Mountain & Lake course. We had a very good turnout so two full divisions. Bad weather on the day with a lot of rain and a very wet course resulted in a round of some five and a half hours, so we had some very tired and very soggy players returning for the presentation.

Paul Mades was top man in Division 2 with his thirty-five points and in second was Alan Evans at thirty-two, one point clear of Barry Cooke in third.

In the top flight it was George Robinson that topped the listings with his even par round of thirty-six points. Mod Chaviraksa was on his tail and came in second at thirty-four while Brian Wilkinson took third after losing out on the count back 17 to 18 on the back nine to Mod.

Barry Cooke recorded the only ‘2’ on the day.

Saturday, July 17, The Emerald – Stableford
1st Mod Chaviraksa (12) 35pts
2nd Richard Talbot (19) 34pts
3rd Andy Turner (23) 32pts
4th Liam Horgan (13) 32pts

As I reported last week we made a change to our usual weekend venue and on Saturday we went to Emerald instead of either Eastern Star or Khao Kheo. I was told the course was in fine fettle despite the large amount of rain that it had endured over the two previous days.

Mod Chaviraksa found the course to her liking and after a third on Wednesday and a second on Thursday she eventually made it to the top spot for the win with thirty-five points this time out. The “rarely seen” Richard Talbot was second with thirty-four and Andy Logan was third at thirty-two after beating Liam Horgan (nice to see you back Liam) on count back 19 to 16.

We have recently introduced a “Nagger Award” for the worst score on the day and on this occasion it was presented to Robert Cannon. My how the mighty can fall – from first to last in a week!

A new lady player who joined us for the first time, Prae Mattawong, was also in the frame for the award, however there is a ruling that this award is never presented to anyone on their first time out with the TRGG.

No ‘2’s were recorded so it was a traditional bell ring and drink for all those at the presentation.

Note: If you want any further or fuller information about the golf outings played by the TRGG from the Travellers Rest Hotel, please contact the hotel manager Tewin Lamthong on 086 056 7019 or just call in to the Travellers Rest in Soi LK Metro, Pattaya and look at the notice board or visit our website at www.trgg.biz.

Club Champions: Doug Lynch, Kuzuo Takimoto & Patsad Ryves

The 10th IPGC Club Championship

The IPGC Championships were held this year over two days, Wednesday 14 and Friday 16 July at the beautiful Pete Dye designed Khao Kheow, which vies for the best golf course in the area and certainly is one of the very toughest test of golf now that the fairways have been reduced in width and the rough allowed to grow. On the two days the course was specially set up by the organising committee as a mixture of yellow and blue tees, with the stroke index 3 par five A8 reduced to 406 yards and altered to a par 4 to arrive at a total par 71 for the A and B courses that were in operation for the two days.

Club & Net Champions Doug Lynch, right, and Kazuo Takimoto, left, with their commemorative golf bags.

The scores returned certainly showed that the objective of the organising committee to provide a very tough test of golf had been attained with the CSS on day 1 remaining at 71 with only around 20% of the qualifying field managing to play within two of their handicaps. This then moved out to 73 on day two after a rainstorm made the going even more difficult with less than 10% of the players playing within two of their handicaps. The difficulties of the condition for the two days were underlined with over a third of the field being single figure handicap players.

With The IPGC sponsoring over 160,000 baht of the cost for the two days, the total cost to the members was 2,500 baht which included the two rounds of golf with caddies, IPGC golf shirt, umbrella and towel together with two buffets, day one being at The Rabbi’s Elephant and day two prior to and after the presentations at The Haven on Friday evening and a free pint of beer or soft drink supplied by the course management following each days round, which represented fantastic value for the members, especially when the lucky draw prizes, which everyone attending the prize giving received, were added into the mix.

The entrants were divided into three divisions set at 0 to 10, 11 to 17 and 18 and above in the Gentlemen’s divisions and a Ladies section playing Stableford over the two days without a cut. Day one was played in a stroke play format with a cut being made at around 50% of the entries in each division, the top half having made the cut, to play a second day of stroke play and the rest of the competition going into the Plate competition played under a stableford scoring system.

Day 1

Day one was played over the A and B courses, on which the management and green staff had worked wonders, considering the recent heavy rainfall in the area and although the greens were a little slower than usual they were true without any hint of bounce or bobble. A serious degree of difficulty had been added to every hole with the pin positions tucked away in the most inaccessible positions and invariably near the edge of the green allowing for few errors in the approach shot.

Championship divisional winners (L-R): Rodney Hayes, Grant Cadell and Brian Henderson.

The round proceeded at a good pace as the whole field was divided into three-balls for speed and convenience of play.

The Ladies Division was led by Saranya Riley after she swept round the course in seven under to head a very competitive group of ladies, with Noi Emmerson at 2 under and Patsad Ryves and Orawan Meeraka at 1 under to be carried forward to day two.

The Third Division was headed by Danny Greer off his 24 handicap at two over par, two in front of Brian Henderson who in turn was three ahead of John Rehm. The cut in the third division came at 87 net as the conditions and layout troubled most of the division.

In the Second Division, things were a little closer with Bubbles Davies on a net three over 74 leading in Grant Cadell and Shuichi Kodaka both just one shot back. The cut for the division came at 79.

The first division featured the only three players to better par, Rodney Hayes and Kazuo Takimoto who both stroked it round in thee under 68’s, and Doug Lynch who had a 70. Steve Mascari, following a decision regarding a lost ball that cost him three shots, carded 73 along with Al Keith and Masanori Takano to ensure that day 2 would be very competitive in the top division.

Day 2

Starting from two tees again with the Plate competition beginning on the B course and the Championship divisions from the first tee on A, the stage was set for another tense and exciting final day with 21 trophies to play for plus the commemorative golf bags for the Gross and Net champions in the gentlemen’s divisions.

As usual the ladies led off the day with all of them in with a chance to take the top honour of Ladies champion.

Plate winners (L-R): Stuart Thompson, Dave Phillips and Peter Masters.

And after a stirring round that saw the last four ladies all in the final group and with the pressure mounting hole by hole, finally Patsad Ryves came through with a strong 44 points to turn the tables on Saranya Riley who could only manage a solid 33 points following her first day’s great round. Noi Emmerson came in third just one over par for the two rounds.

In the Third Division Danny Greer unfortunately fell away badly with a net 90 to leave the door wide open for Brian Henderson to take the top spot with a very tidy one under round which left him a massive eleven shots ahead of Rod Howett in second place, following a good net 77 on day 2, and Burnie Sinclair taking third with a couple of net 80’s.

The Second Division top spot eventually went to Grant Cadell when Bubbles Davies took a triple seven down the last, B9, after a titanic struggle all the way round the course with Bubbles holding the prime spot right up to the last and then losing out in the count back which was decided by the Day 2 round in which Grant was the better by a single stroke. Brian Wilkinson, having struggled all day to contend with the “impossible lies in the fairways”, still slipped into third place one ahead of Paul Taylor even with Paul not experiencing the same hardships.

The top of the first division promised to be a real battle with the top eight from Day 1 all in with a chance for Club Champion Net and Gross or the 1st Division lead. In the event Doug Lynch proved to be the strongest contender with his prodigious length from the tee allowing for a short iron on even the longest of the par 4’s as the ground conditions gave nothing in the way of roll on the fairways and distance being determined by where the ball landed. So with a final round of 77 he took the 10th Club Championship together with trophy and golf bag, with an overall score of 150.

Having played throughout the day in the same group as Doug, a fair way back on every fairway, Kazuo Takimoto showed great perseverance as he took the Club Net Champion trophy and golf bag with a net 141. Rodney Hayes, after his great Day 1 score, just failed to capitalise in the more difficult conditions with a net 75 but still took top spot in the division as Kazuo was restricted, as were all players, to one trophy per player. Bob Lamond slipped into second place with an excellent level par second round and Steve Mascari, getting some reward for two days of very tidy golf, came in third.

Plate Competitions

Division 3 had David Phillips at the top after winning a count back by 18 to 12 over John Squitiero in second and Sid Ottaway in third place.

Division 2 saw Peter Master with the best score in the plates three divisions take the top spot in front of Chris Knapp and Harry Vincenzi in third.

Division 1 also had to go to a count back with Stuart Thompson just getting the better of Russell Exley by 18 to 16 and Paul Smith in third another two shots behind them after winning a countback with Dave Stockman by 17 to 15.

Before the presentation of the prizes by Club Chairman Chris Knapp, ably assisted by Russell Exley, the Chairman, thanked Len Jones, Glyn Evans, Steve Mascari, and Russell Exley together with their respective venues, for assisting in the promotion and organisation of another very successful Club Championship. There was also an additional thank you to Stephen Beard and Russell Exley who had spent most of the week dealing with many of the details setting up the course, organising the IPGC Club banners and custom made tee markers and in organising Start times, registration, starters and scoring amongst other things together with Glyn Evans who had assisted very helpfully on the golf days at the course.

He also thanked the management of Khao Kheow for doing such an excellent job of preparing the courses is less than ideal conditions and the starters and caddy masters who did a first class job, and then gave a special commendation to all the members that had supported and contested over the two days and to Pattaya Sports Supply for once again supplying all of the trophies. He also thanked Jeff Cohen and The Rabbi’s Elephant staff for providing the buffet on the Wednesday and also The Haven and Khun Lumyai for once again providing a first class buffet that went on late into Frioday night and put a final gloss on what had been once again a very memorable and well organised two days of top drawer golf played in the very best spirit of the game.

Following the prize giving everyone attending was presented with a lucky draw prize of a dozen top brand golf balls.

Bridge in Paradise: by Neil Robinson

This was a board from a recent pairs game.  Everyone was vulnerable and North dealt.  Imagine that you hold the West hand below.  You hear three passes.  You have twelve high card points and the doubleton spade holding gives you a little distribution.  What do you bid in fourth seat?

S: 54

H: AJ87

D: J974

C: AQ4

The answer is that you pass, in spite of the fact that you have (minimum) opening points.  This is because the hand does not meet the rule of fifteen.  This rule is only used when you want to decide whether or not to open in fourth seat.  It says that you should open if your high card points plus your spades add up to fifteen or more.  The hand does not meet the rule, so pass.

The rule sounds rather arbitrary - why spades and not some other suit?  The answer is that spades is the boss suit - if you open then either your partner or the opponents are likely to bid spades at some point.  If you cannot either support your partner or defend against a spade contract (either from good points or long spades) then it is better to just let the hand be passed out.  This was the full deal, with North dealer:

                     S: J93

                     H: K

                     D: A1085

                     C: KJ1073

S: 54                               S: AK62

H: AJ87                         H: Q542

D: J974                          D: Q63

C: AQ4                           C: 85

                     S: Q1087

                     H: 10963

                     D: K2

                     C: 962

Only one table passed it out (resulting in a top for East-West).  At other tables the contract was two hearts or, in one case, one spade, by East-West.  The adverse distribution meant that these contracts all went down.  With likely play in a heart contract, the defense will get at least the two top diamonds, three heart tricks and one club trick.  So, better to pass!

Masters passes test at Rayong

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

The Pattaya Golf Society visited an empty Rayong CC on Tuesday, July 13, to play a stableford competition on the slowly improving course. It has been a year now since the ownership change and there is evidence that the new owners are getting it right. But there is still much to do to make the greens consistent and even paced and cutting only a few at a time is not the recipe for success, as the group found when holes from 9 to 12 had been cut and then again the fifteenth.

Scoring has always been tough on this excellent and testing track and on this occasion things went very much to handicap with Masa Takano and Wichai Tananusorn sharing third place with 31 points each. In runner-up place was the returning Swiss golfer John Rehm and he continued his habit of being in the frame on his first round each trip with 32 points. The winner was Peter Masters whose 33 points represented very good value for the course and his score was a good preparation for the IPGC Championships beginning at Khao Kheow the following day.
There were no birdie ‘2’s, unsurprisingly.

Rehm reigns

A small group of PGS stalwarts gathered at Rayong CC on Saturday, July 17 to play a post-IPGC Championship stableford competition. The golfing excesses of the previous ten days, which included in addition to the usual weekly golf a Monthly Medal, a birthday scramble and two days of intense strokeplay at Khao Kheow, led to some jaded performances on Sir Nick’s fine creation and scores were generally low.

In third place was Canadian John Robertson with 31 points, his last contribution before leaving for Canada for six weeks, whilst Dad, Jack, undergoes a long awaited knee operation. In second place was Aussie regular visitor Brendan Gilsenan whose 34 points marked the end of a week which saw his golf develop well with new clubs and the experience of Khao Kheow. The winner was John Rehm, always so consistent on his visits, and his 36 point card was the pick of the bunch.

There was one birdie ‘2’, Bob St Aubin chipping in on the fifth, and he also volunteered for the Booby Bevy for his otherwise poor score. It was the excuse the jaded organiser was looking for! It had indeed been a tough week for the PGS.

Bernie gets his first win at Emerald

Ban Chang Golf Society

Bernie celebrates his win with the staff at Mama’s Bar.

Another week and yet again more rain greeted us upon our arrival at Emerald Golf Course. But, no problem, after waiting for only half an hour we managed to tee off at 9:30 a.m. Two groups again this week and we welcomed back Bob G., after a trip to England, and Dangle after an enforced layoff!

Constant drizzle on the front nine meant that lift and place on the fairways came into play. As seen from the headline, Bernie finally got a win with a very creditable 39 points and Tom, who leaves us next week, came in second with a 37.

Danny L. won nearest the pin and the skin results were as follows: JJ (1) Ton (1) and Dangle (7). With only 9 skins being won this week the other 9 will be rolled over to next week so there should be some serious competition on the first hole.

Bob G. tried his hardest to take Dangle’s scratch record away but fell short by two.

After prize giving all of us retired to Mama’s Bar for a few beers and also listening to Bob G. explaining to everyone that he will be trying harder next week.

Café Kronborg the new leader

Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

Café Kronborg moved up from fourth place to first after winning three points from USMC. Kran Nielsen led her Kronborg team with a 525 series and Jang Shaw had a 518.

200 Bowlers: Somrak, Nok and Antero

VFW Post 9876 jumped from fifth place to second after splitting their match with Green Tree. Somrak led VFW with the best bowling on the day with a 216 game and 579 series. Tue Pettae bowled a 516 series for Green Tree.

Nok Kennedy bowled a 211 game, 550 series to lead Sabai Friday to a four point win over Canada and Bavaria won all four points from House of the Golden Coin. It looks like neither team could figure out lanes 11 and 12 as no good scores were recorded.

Brother D won four points from Jack Tar as both teams bowled good on lanes 13 and 14. Dang Downs bowled a 556 series and Antero Ronkainen had a 244 game, 564 series for Brother D. Ooy Pluemkamon rolled a 554 series and Yeow had a 527 for Jack Tar.
