Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Antero, Kran, Tukata, Morn & Tue.

Snow Bowler only managed to split their match with VFW Post 9876 with each team winning two points but that was enough for them to clinch first place with one week remaining. Once again lanes l1 and 12 were tough and no good scores were bowled.

Canada moved into second place after winning all four points from the U.S. Marine Corps team. Tue Pettae led Canada with a 235 game, 576 series and Lek Reaper had a 542. Sue Murphy was best for USMC with a 523 series.

Bavaria took three points from Brother D and knocked them out of second place. Antero Ronkainen had a great series for Bavaria with games of 160, 200 and 203 for a 563 series. Ralph was best for Brother D with a 505.

Kran Nielsen bowled a 201 game and 550 series and Morn Mack had a 210 game for Caf้ Kronborg but they only managed to win one point from Green Tree. Tukata Thompson bowled a 201 game for Green Tree.

Monday, August 22, Mountain Shadow – Stableford

We had an excellent field of 21 golfers signed up to play the challenging but popular Mountain Shadow layout and it was shaping up to be a day of great Thailand weather on a terrific golf course. We had many newcomers and returnees and we welcomed back Dave Neal from the U.K. and his lady Thientong, Takeshi Hakozaki from Japan, Arne Jorgensen from Denmark, Mike Johns from the U.S.A., Marko Beer from Switzerland and Carl Baeker from Germany.

Thanks to a late phone call from the Admiral it was necessary for Arne to make his own way to the course as a result of sleeping in and we departed the Kronny in three mini vans right on 0815 hrs. Just 44 minutes later we arrived at a deserted Mountain Shadow and were able to tee off as soon as we were ready with our first foursome teeing off 35 minutes ahead of schedule at 0925 hrs in glorious golfing conditions.

The golf course was as ever in great shape with the greens very well prepared and true and proving a touch tricky for many on the day. With no-one in front of us we completed our first nine in two hours and five minutes, including a drink stop and due to the hot and humid conditions slowed down a tad on the second nine, finishing the round in four hours & twenty minutes.

We had two flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 16 and B Flight for 17 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pins on the four par threes.

The going proved tough for most as no-one was able to play better than their handicap and yours truly had a welcome return to the winner’s circle by taking out A Flight with 34 points on a count back from Takeshi Hakozaki. Last month’s PSC Monthly Medal A Flight winner Martin Todd took third place with 33 points on a count back from Mike Johns.

Veteran Hugh O’Donnell was remarking before the round how he was not too keen on the course but may now have changed his mind as he won B Flight with a steady 36 points in a three way count back from Andrew Krawiec and Graham Buckingham. Dave Neal finished fourth with 31 points.

A Flight

1st Peter Blackburn (11) 34pts

2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 34pts

3rd Martin Todd (7) 33pts

4th Mike Johns (16) 33pts

B Flight

1st Hugh O’Donnell (23) 36pts

2nd Andrew Krawiec (19) 36pts

3rd Graham Buckingham (23) 36pts

4th Dave Neal (21) 31pts

Near Pins: 5th Peter Blackburn, 8th Dave Neal, 15th Mike Gosden, 17th Marko Beer

The Compass Cap was won by Kenny Chung, and Mike Gosden then proceeded to parade Deefa the Dog who collected numerous donations to charity from the generous Kronny gang.

Thursday, August 25, Bankpakong – Stableford

The weather forecast was fine, but early morning dark clouds once more put the seed of doubt regarding a rain free day and our resident “prophet of doom” weather forecaster, Hugh O’Donnell declared that we were going to get very wet. Oh ye of little faith!

A late cancellation the night before left us with still a very good field of 21 golfers eagerly anticipating the round at the classy Bangpakong Riverside Country Club. We welcomed the return of Patrice Bardy from France and newcomer Adam Oyston from the U.K. It was also time to say farewell to Andrew Krawiec who was returning to Sydney, Australia on the weekend.

We departed Caf้ Kronborg right on time and 66 minutes later arrived at the course to see a somewhat empty car park which always bodes well for a fairly quick round. We had a two ball which we sent away first just a few minutes before our scheduled tee time of 0952 hrs and as mentioned earlier the golf course was fairly deserted – millionaire’s golf once more!

The weather was fabulous despite Hugh’s prediction and as ever the course was in tip top shape although the greens were somewhat slow due to recent sanding but will be all the better for it and perfect for our visit next month. It was quite hot and so was the golf of two of our group, Dave and Andrew who turned with 23 & 22 points respectively. We flew round the first nine in just over two hours including a drinks stop and as it got hotter and quite humid we slowed down somewhat on the second nine to finish the round in four hours and ten minutes.

We had 2 Flights, A Flight for 0 to 17 and B Flight for handicaps of 18 and over and with the good field were able to reward nearest the pins on all par threes and longest first putts on the 9th and 18th.

With a welcome return to form American Ken Bernek took out the A Flight with a fine 41 points from Mike Alidi, who shot a great sub-par round of 71 off the stick to come second with 39 points, beating Walter Baechli on a count back. Yours truly stormed home with 22 points on the back nine to finish fourth with 38 points.

As mentioned before two of my playing partners were battling it out all day for the B Flight honors and in the end had to be separated by a count back, both having 41 points. With 19 points on the back nine Andrew Krawiec finished first with The Admiral second after his 18 point back nine. Another count back was necessary to decide third & fourth places with Thientong Charoenrung victorious over Graham Buckingham, both with 38 points. It was a sharp contrast to Monday’s scoring at Mountain Shadow when the flights were won with 34 & 36 points respectively.

A Flight

1st Ken Bernek (17) 41pts

2nd Mike Alidi (2) 39pts

3rd Walter Baechli (17) 39pts

4th Peter Blackburn (11) 38pts

B Flight

1st Andrew Krawiec (19) 41pts

2nd Dave Richardson (24) 41pts

3rd Thientong Charoenrung (23) 38pts

4th Graham Buckingham (23) 38pts

Near Pins: 4th Thientong Charoenrung, 7th Walter Baechli, 13th Martin Todd, 16th Thientong Charoenrung

Long Putts: 9th Mike Alidi, 18th Adam Oyston

The Compass Cap was on the day won by Jean-Claude Coulon who kindly made the mandatory donation to charity and as Deefa the Dog was not present we were unable to collect a donation from Hugh O’Donnell for his completely inaccurate weather forecast earlier in the day.

Bourke blitzes Burapha

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Newbie to the Outback Geoff, congratulates Graham (centre) on his win at Khao Kheow and Jim (right) for second.

Monday, August 22, Khao Kheow – Stableford

What a difference a week makes; last time we were here we were up to our ankles in mud, today the course was bathed in sunshine and was in good condition. The greens on loop A had just been lightly sanded but putts ran well at a good speed, whereas our back nine, loop B, the greens were still to be done and were quite a bit slower.

Away slightly early, the 23 players enjoyed a very comfortable round of golf as the six groups all found their own pace spread over about six holes, with a three-ball and carters at the front and the walkers towards the back; it was a great pace of play for everybody with no hold-ups. Other than the Outback there were few players to be seen.

The course played one shot tougher than par, as Graham Holmes and Jim Peachey both shot rounds of 36 points, with Graham taking the top spot by the usual methods; back in third was Paul Smith with an excellent 74 gross for his 35 points. Suzi’s given a lot to do off her handicap round here of 12 but she played well until her second shot on B9, when she hooked the ball into the water and walked off the green with a wipe; nevertheless, she made up for it with ‘2’s, as she collected another two today.

Div B had Bob Lindborg tied with Tony McDonough both with 33 points and Bill Broschart snuck into third place on 32.

There were four ‘2’s; two from Suzi Lawton on holes A3 & B8, and one each from Bob Lindborg & Murray Hart on hole A5.

Div A (0-15)

1st Graham Holmes (9/Hi8.6) 36pts

2nd Jim Peachey (15/Hi14) 36pts

3rd Paul Smith (1/Hi1.1) 35pts

Div B (16+)

1st Bob Lindborg (19/Hi17.6) 33pts

2nd Tony McDonough (16/Hi14.7) 33pts

3rd Bill Broschart (16/Hi14.4) 32pts

Tuesday, August 23, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford

What’s happening here at Pattaya C.C.? Just after a meeting to discuss the easing of the rating and slope of the course, which was put on hold pending further discussion, the course bit back playing three shots harder than par yesterday for the Turnip’s Monday Turn-up and today very similarly with 34 points being par for the course. Is the course playing harder, certainly the greens are getting slippery or is it just we’re not playing so well?

Ms Seesa, otherwise known as Mam, won the day with her 38 points ahead of Chad on 36 and the General with 34, who beat Tony McD wth the same score. There was a whole host of players just one shot further back, headed by John Cogan.

There were only two ‘2’s from Bryce Stick on hole 7 and newcomer Andy Letts on hole 16.

1st Phompinmon Seesa (33/Hi29.7) 38pts

2nd Barry Chadbourn (17/Hi17.4) 36pts

3rd Jack Moseley (15) 34pts

Wednesday, August 24, Burapha – Stableford

By all reports the course was in excellent condition and judging by the scoring, many of the 30 Outbackers made the most of the shorter white tees of the C & D nines. Perhaps it’s time Capt’ Bob put them off the blues!

Paul Bourke was the runaway winner of Div A with a fabulous 44 points, just in time to receive a one and a half shot handicap cut ahead of the big three day tournament coming up on Monday in Hua Hin. Wes Rado hasn’t played with us for a while and he returned to Thailand in fine form to take second with 39, with regular Outbacker, Steve Mann, having to settle for third place with his 36.

Aussie boys, Bryce Stick (40pts) and Barney Clarkson (38pts) repeated the success for the visitors in Div B, with Burapha member, John O’Keefe, flying the flag for the locals also on 36; he beat Greg Hill into third place by the usual count-back method.

Welcome back not only to Wes but also to Sel Wegner, who will be joining us in Hua Hin but he has a bit of work to do after his poor showing today and Peter Allen improved his previous score more than five-fold with his 17 points.

There were four ‘2’s: two on hole C8 from Paul Bourke & Owen Walkley, one on D2 from Jim Brackett and one on hole D8 from Vic Hester.

Div A (0–15)

1st Paul Bourke (12/Hi11.7) 44pts

2nd Wes Rado (14) 39pts

3rd Steve Mann (12) 36pts

Div B (16+)

1st Bryce Stick (21/Hi20.1) 40pts

2nd Barney Clarkson (27/Hi25.3) 38pts

3rd John O’Keefe (17/Hi16.3) 36pts

Friday’s Div A winner Paul Greenaway (left) with Steve Milne (2nd Div B), John Stafford (Div C winner) and one of the Outback staff.

Friday, August 26, St. Andrews - Stableford

As Green Valley was otherwise engaged, we were switched across to St. Andrews at no extra cost which attracted a capped field of 44 players. Unfortunately a couple failed to show and Sang, we believe that is her name, stepped up and played some excellent golf off 9 and two others who played were not in the comp., leaving 41 competitors.

John Stafford shot an amazing 44pts off a handicap of 22 here on the 1st July a few weeks ago and today he’s gone out and shown just how much he likes this track by shooting another 41pts today, this time off 19. He not only had the top score of the day, winning Div C, but he was eight clear of the second placed man, John Foote, who just dropped in for a quick game, en route from China.

Paul Greenaway had a result at last after a month or so of poor form, to return to the winner’s circle with a fine 39pts off 10 and heading off Wes Rado on the same score by the usual countback method. Angus Neilson, an ex work colleague of Jack’s from the UK, who was playing St. Andrews for the first time also played well for his 38pts and the low gross of the day of 80 (not forgetting the par here is 74).

Div B didn’t do so well as nobody broke par but the best score there was Kissy Buchanan’s 35pts, matched by Steve Milne and one ahead of Tony McDonough.

There were three ‘2’s, all on the 10th and they came from John Fitzgerald, Steve Mann and Angus.

Div A (0-14)

1st Paul Greenaway (10/Hi9.8) 39pts

2nd Wes Rado (14/Hi13.4) 39pts

3rd Angus Neilson (8/Hi7.7) 38pts

Div B (15-17)

1st Keith Buchanan (16/Hi14.7) 35pts

2nd Steve Milne (15/Hi14) 35pts

3rd Tony McDonough (16/Hi14.7) 34pts

Div C (18+)

1st John Stafford (19/Hi17.9) 41pts

2nd John Foote (22/Hi20.8) 33pts

3rd Bob Lindborg (19/Hi17.6) 31pts

Granted, Cadell has the round of his life

PSC golf from The Golf Club Sports Bar

Grant Cadell.

Monday, August 22, Green Valley – Stableford

1st- Grant Cadell (16) 44pts

2nd- Dale Shier (13) 40pts

3rd- Peter Hind (19) 39pts

It was a busy week at the Club with 4 days of glorious golf so let’s get right to it.

Shooting 40 Stableford points is great golf and would usually win on any given day. Imagine the mental turmoil, the gut-wrenching disappointment and utter frustration Dale Shier went through when he discovered Grant Cadell came in with 44 points! Timing is everything and Shier (I before e except after c) should have saved his 40 for another day.

Grant is quite possibly the nicest guy in Pattaya, so we were all actually quite happy to witness his amazing day at Green Valley. Peter Hind came in 3rd with a highly respectable 39, but the golf is getting good out there once again. Well played lads!

Ian Rippey & wife Mam.

Tuesday, August 23, Siam Old Course - Stableford

1st Ian Rippey (10) 39pts

2nd Walter Baichle (17) 35pts

3rd Paul McNally (4) 32pts

If you look at the bottom right corner of the PSC website homepage, you will see a poll for the favourite golf course in Pattaya that you can vote on. There have been over 1,200 votes so far and not surprisingly the Schmidt-Curley redesigned Siam Old Course is on top. We took advantage of the Tuesday Sports Day rate of 2,250 all in and 4 groups teed off the white tees on the day.

The talented Mr. Rippey does it again! The Ripster took full advantage of his local knowledge as a member and blasted away the rest of the field with a 39 on this difficult course. Well played Ian, nice to have the putter working, isn’t it?

Walter Baichle was in fine form as he was last week and beat many of the members who joined in with his handy 35. Paul “Spike” McNally also got the members’ bounce with 32 points on the card to place third.

Siam is a class act and you should spoil yourself once or twice a year and play this gem of a course and see for yourself why it got so many of the votes!

Wednesday, August 24, Bangpra - Monthly Medal

1st Alex Tregurtha (17) net 71

2nd Henry O’Brian (19) net 73

3rd Larry Maxey (19) net 76

Off to the monkey course once again for the August Monthly Medal sponsored by Pattaya Pizza. This is now one of the best courses Pattaya has to offer and is a must play for the golfing visitor on his tour. Bangpra is probably as well known for the splendid Japanese toilets as her lightning fast greens.

The Bob (of the Seamless variety) admitted to having four “3-putt” and two “4-putt” greens on the day to make sure he would not be taking the Antigua shirt home on this trip. Not only are the greens super quick, but they are a tricky read as well.

Alex Tregurtha had no problem reading those greens (or he should have gotten that caddy number for next time!) and blew away the field with his fine 71 before leaving for the airport. See you next time mate, we owe you a Monthly Medal winner shirt! By the way, we have a new batch of our semi-famous Antigua super cool and dry golf shirts in sky blue, orchid, red and lots of new colours and now all sizes, so come by the club and check it out.

Just missing out was Scotsman Henry O with a sobering 73 and another guy heading back to work, Larry Maxey with a net 76 to capture 3rd place. Next month we will play the Monthly Medal at Mountain Shadow.

Friday, August 26, Greenwood - Stableford

1st Steve Ellison (17) 38pts

2nd Wayne Lee (13) 36pts

3rd Brad Gearic (13) 29pts

We have been sooo lucky dodging the rain for the past few weeks it is amazing. Just a short burst for 2 minutes on the third hole was all that came down for the day. We did not bother with ‘lift, clean and place’ and it turned out to be the correct decision.

We were also lucky to draw the C and B courses on the day. It has been years since I have played C and it was magnificent. Steve Ellison and Wayne Lee finished that 9 all even at 21 points, so it was off to B to close the deal.

For once, the putter was fully charged and working fine for this scribe who ended up with 38 points - the best play in ages! Greenwood was in excellent shape, super lush and maybe the best greens in Pattaya, but then I would think that, wouldn’t I? As it turned out, the physical advantage of having a cart for the muggy day made the difference but it still came down to the last couple of holes.

Wayne Lee played great golf all day and had some booming drives that were 50 yards ahead of us to finish up with 36 points. Brad “the pilot” Gearic found his 29 points were just enough for his 3rd place finish. All in all a great day of golf with some great guys. That’s what it’s all about.

Thanks to all for participating in this week’s fixtures, and don’t forget to check us out on facebook /golfclubpattaya for updates and the September golf schedule..

Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro, off Soi Buakhao and Soi Diana junction. We can be reached on 085 434 3377 or [email protected] and our is www. golfclubpattaya.com.

Wong hits the heights at Khao Kheow

PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s

Tuesday’s top four with one of Bert’s finest.

Derek Brook

Tuesday, August 23, Khao Kheow – Stableford

We always look forward to a visit to K.K., however on this morning the turnout was rather thin, but we still had 16 players. Weird, as I say, it is a guessing game these days how many are in town, and of course healthy.

So after one of Bert’s Golfers special breakfasts, it was into cars and off to Khao Kheow. On this morning the trip was uneventful and we were soon pulling into the entrance to drop our clubs off. I was lucky because due to circumstances beyond my control I had left my clubs in a friend’s car previously and he would be able to drop them off at the entrance. So I went out to the course to collect my clubs and put them on the cart.

Playing with rented clubs is very difficult, especially with the driver not working, but at least the 3 iron worked well. Meanwhile my clubs were put in Bert’s next to the ‘Clubs for Rent’. Out on the course the A & B nines were the test and with a high wind and hot weather the day turned out difficult, especially with a driver that went further sideways than forward.

K.K is always a pleasure to play and even on a day when the fairways were wet and we could not use them for Buggies, the greens were fast and tricky, the fairways were quite good, but as all who know K.K. know the rough was tough. When I say tough you have to know the grass here is as hard to get out of as on any course, and wet, wow.

Back at Bert’s it was generally well known I would not be in the places even not knowing my score, but at least I got my clubs back and put them in my car. So onto the presentation, and the winner was the big hitting Henry Wong with 40 points ahead of a 3 way count-back on 36 points that saw Dick Warberg in second, Barry Elphick in third and Mashi in fourth. Not often we see Mashi lose a count-back.

So now to the next competition when with my clubs well rested I could be a ‘contender’, but with the brain in neutral, who knows. T.T.F.N.

Near Pins: Barry Elphick, Tom Cotton, Henry Wong and Mashi Kaneta.

The ‘Gaffer’ reaches senior status in style

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Rabbi and Mr. Len flanked by Monday’s winning pair of
Benny Hansen and Don Nellis.

On Monday, 22nd August, the Pattaya Golf Society’s “golf geezer”, Mr Len celebrated the arrival of his senior status and the imminent arrival of his debut OAP cheque with a pairs scramble at Pleasant Valley, using the occasion as the group’s monthly charity event as well. The course, except for the bunkers, was in fair condition and its very tight back nine would make a stern challenge for the scrambling pairs.

All the golfers were intent on enjoying themselves in good conditions and many technical prizes were up for grabs, all sponsored by the members of the group, with a special contribution from “Golf Click”. The par three near pins went to Fred Land, Wichai Tananusorn and Don Nellis (two) and the near pin second shot on hole twelve was won in splendid style by Ronnie Ramsay and the accuracy of his third shot on the tough par five fifteenth won Mikael Andersson the prize. Tony Thorne took the longest putt on the final hole with a prodigious cross slope effort.

The competition proper saw Mikael Andersson and Roy Thornton record the best gross figures of 71 whilst Fred Land and Kenny Priddy finished in third with net 62.4. Wichai Tananusorn and Mr Len fired the second best gross round the day, level par, to finish with 61.8 net in second place and the winning pair were the individual “form” men currently, Don Nellis and Benny Hansen with net 60.5.

Bryan Barrel and Bobby Shirkey had the ignominy of the Booby Bevy and Ronnie Ramsay and partner Allen Dow recorded the day’s biggest split figures of 41 - 35.

The presentation buffet was provided by Khun Peung and it was a sumptuous affair as always and the highlight of the evening was the presentation of an exclusive engraved IPGC golf bag to Mr Len, by Rabbi, on behalf of all of his golf friends.

Khun Phennipa the Administrative Officer of the Fr. Ray Foundation Outreach Center was present to receive a large donation which had been raised by the amazing generosity of the golfers, pushing the amount raised so far this year to 85,000 baht and keeping the group well on track to meet its first year target of 100K.

For Mr Len “senior moments” will surely come but nothing could beat this particular senior moment in the warm-hearted company of the PGS.

Rampant Ramsay

The Pattaya Golf Society chose Pattaya CC as its venue for a stableford competition on Friday, 26th August, on a cool, stormy and miserable day. The course was surprisingly in good condition and the greens still retained a lot of speed. The bunkers, though well kept, were saturated and spongy. In such conditions good scores were at a premium but amazingly a third of the field recorded scores of level par or better.

Sharing second place on 37 points were Tony Thorne and Don Nellis, the latter enjoying his best spell in quite a few years of golf with PGS. Revelling in conditions reminiscent of a balmy Caledonian summer was Ronnie Ramsay and all the power and focus was there again as he amassed forty points for an excellent win. He even overcame the lack of his golf shoes and had to make an investment in the Pro Shop before teeing off!

The ‘2’s pot was shared by Wichai Tananusorn and Alan Duckett with fine efforts on holes 7 and 12 and the Booby Bevy went to Ronnie Snr for his low return of the day.

And so another week with the Pattaya Golf Society ended. Final word: anyone requiring an almost new pair of golf footwear, size nine, should contact Ronnie Jnr and maybe they could step into his shoes after his four-under performance at Pattaya CC.

Barry puts the boot in

PSC golf from Lewinski’s

Barry Copestake.

Sunday, August 21, St Andrews - Stableford

A Flight

1st Jack Grindvold (6) 40pts

2nd Gareth Gill (9) 39pts

B Flight

1st Barry Copestake (16) 44pts

2nd Alex Tregurtha (17) 39pts

Near Pins: No 3 Ed Wyckoff, No 5 Alex Tregurtha, No 10 Gareth Gill, No 17 Bob Dibben.

Sunday’s usual Green Valley fixture was forced to move to neighboring St Andrews due to a large tournament. This move suited Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake down to a tee. Barry, who in recent years has taken the importing/exporting of the hobnail boot trade to a new level, shot a lifetime best 9 under his handicap 44 points for man of the match and junior flight honors. ‘Heal’ never believe it!

Jack Grinvold.

Following Barry up the podium steps five strokes in arrears was Alex Tregurtha who showed the old man how it is done. Kathy ‘Elgar’ Doody was a shot back, her scorecard containing three no scoring holes. But she did have the comfort of two 2’s

Skipping up to the flagship flight saw Jack ‘on your bike’ Grindvold take the top podium spot with a rock solid 40 points closely followed by Gareth ‘Ralphy’ Gill who has hit the ground running this trip to take the silver a shot off the pace. Just as in the minor flight there was a 38 point for nothing player in Ian ‘lose change’ Halfpenny but he did get to join Kathy on the front row of the prize giving.

Interestingly all the winners bar Alex collected a 2 which totaled ten.

Lowest score of the day came from the over worked Jez ‘the Principal’ who commented that it was all a load of “Cobblers!”

Finally after the game Jez Lees received a text of Bob Newell’s regular caddie; it read “Hello Jez, I want you talk with Bob cancel booking me Nim 170, Golf bag big and heavy, many me don’t power, tired, I want defense danger abort, thank you!”

Kinda brings a tear to your eyes hey.

Monday, August 22, Bangpakong - Blind Pairs

1st Ed Wyckoff 38 pts

2nd Colin Davis 34pts

A small but dedicated band made the long trip to the well maintained Bangpakong Riverside. Because the field was made up with an odd number, i.e. nine, it was decided to have a blind pairs competition and how this feat was achieved remains a mystery to all but the Donkey.

Ed the Senator tea party was the only player to better par so it would be right to think that whoever finished with Ed as their partner would win. Colin ‘The Donkey had nothing to do with the draw but drew Ed anyway as his partner.

No 2’s so it is a treble rollover on Wednesday as Sundays’ fixture does not count.

Wednesday,
August 24,
St. Andrews - Stableford

1st Geoff Kubas (19) 37pts

2nd Ed Wyckoff (10) 36pts

It was back to the formidable St Andrews for a fair sized field today. The course was damp but in excellent condition which suited Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas as he hit all the right notes for a man of the match. Geoff was also the only player to better par.

Pay window specialist Ed the ‘Senator Tea Party’ Wyckoff and Colin the ‘Donkey’ went to a count back. Ed put a count back schooling on the Donkey leaving the Donkey out of the frame, much to the joy of all.

No 2s again so it’s a quadruple rollover on Friday.

Friday, August 26, The Emerald - Stableford

A Flight

1st John Feehan (16) 37pts

2nd Ed Wyckoff (10) 37pts

B Flight

1st Sim Davis 9 (25) 36pts

2nd Geoff Kubas (21) 34pts

The last day of the week is usually held on the “local” courses when possible to mitigate Friday Sukhumvit traffic, so it was off to the Emerald.

There was a triumvirate of players log jammed on 37 points in the premier flight vying for the two podium places. Ireland’s John Feehan emerged with the top spot in the resulting count back ahead of the silver specialist Ed’ the Senator’ Wyckoff. Jonny Lindburgh was left in a daze (but not for long I might add).

There was plenty of drama and nearly a fight as the Donkey informed Sim ‘Jenny’ Davis that she could not enter the 2’s comp because she was playing off the Red Tees (well she is a lady and in fact his wife) it was bound to happen. Sim did manage a ‘2’ and the Donkey spent the night in the spare stable.

Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas was on song as he got the verdict in a count back victory over Christy good Knight

The only 2 of the day was claimed by Jonny Lindburgh that set a new society record.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us can just pop in, and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

St. Laurent takes victory by one

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Joe St. Laurent (left) with Paul Kraft.

Another fine day for golf and a good turnout at the Pattaya Country Club this 24th of August as twelve players teed off around 7 a.m. The course was in good shape and we finally found some soft sand in the bunkers.

Some of the usual high hitters were in something of a slump today but Joe St. Laurent came in first with 34 points followed by Paul Kraft with 33 points. Dale Drader also had 33 points but was pushed out of second place on count back. Look for higher scores next week as the play is for the monthly trophy.

Sus Ige furnished the usual snacks and the ever present, and delicious, hot dogs.

Geoff Parker with Tuk.

Monday, August 22, The Emerald - Stableford

Geoff Parker is making a late surge to challenge Barry Murnin for the golfer of the month title; Geoff finished runner up today beating Colin Greig on a count back but the best round of the day was played by Tony Robbins who scored a marvellous 40 stableford points to win the comp, and a near pin win too made it a very profitable day for him!

1st Tony Robbins (12) 40pts

2nd Geoff Parker (17) 35pts

3rd Colin Greig (10) 35pts

Near Pins: Tony Robbins, Barry Murnin, Larry Bland, William Macey.

Wednesday, August 24, Greenwood - Stableford

Playing in the same group together the two favourites for the golfer of the month title, Geoff Parker and Barry Murnin, went head to head and it was Geoff who came out on top, beating Barry by four points but Barry’s second place kept the pressure on with three games still to go. Geoff Hart came in third with 33 points.

1st Geoff Parker (17) 38pts

2nd Barry Murnin (15) 34pts

3rd Geoff Hart (23) 33pts

Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Colin Greig (2)

Friday, August 26, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

Playing together again, Barry and Geoff had a cracking round with Barry turning the tables on Geoff to win the A flight with a brilliant 42 points. Geoff pushed him all the way and eventually lost it on the 18th hole but still came into the clubhouse with 41 points to take second place.

Colin Greig, playing in the same group, was unable to keep up with the leaders finishing third with 38 points and bemoaning the ‘dodgy’ handicaps of the two leaders!

In the B flight Reg Smart came back refreshed after an enforced break from golf to win with 40 points. Geoff Hart got in the frame again finishing second while Nigel Cannon, making another ‘guest’ appearance, took third place.

A Flight

1st Barry Murnin (15) 42pts

2nd Geoff Parker (17) 41pts

3rd Colin Greig (10) 38pts

B Flight

1st Reg Smart (23) 40pts

2nd Geoff Hart (23) 36pts

3rd Nigel Cannon (19) 34pts

Near Pins: Geoff Cox, Mukesh, Geoff Parker (2)

Mark Armstrong does it again

IPGC golf from The Haven

Mark Armstrong.

Monday, August 22, The Emerald - Stableford

CSS 72

1st Mark Armstrong (22) 40pts

2nd Rod Howett (22) 36pts

3rd Alan Gadsby (18) 36pts

4th Patrick Scullion (20) 34pts

5th Alan Hanlon (11) 33pts

The stormy weather continued but the players were very lucky that the threatened rain did not materialize although the cloud cover continued to provide good conditions for golf but the wet course made scoring difficult.

Mark Armstrong went one better than last week, when he scored 39 points, amassing another 40 even though his handicap had been pared by two as he claimed the top spot by four clear shots. Once again his round was underpinned by consistent hitting off the tee, allied on this occasion to an extra measure of accuracy and some excellent putting which all added up to an outstanding round that proved to be his best score ever in both Thailand and Australia and earned another one shot reduction in handicap.

Rod Howett although not playing to his full potential, still did enough to take second place but needed to be better in a count back, which he was, by a margin of 18 to 17for second place as Alan Gadsby took yet another podium placing in third.

After much toiling and sweat over several courses during his stay in Pattaya, Patrick Scullion at last put together a round that almost matched his handicap in taking fourth spot and with just a little bit of luck could have been challenging for the top position.

Alan Hanlon closed out the honourable mentions another shot back in fifth.

Unsurprisingly there were no 2’s in either division.

Before presenting the prizes the Doc welcomed back Cliff Hornsby, Stephen Brown, Nobutaka Yamaguchi, Jens Gunnarsson and warren Gallop.

Shuichi Kodaka.

Wednesday, August 24, Eastern Star - Stableford

CSS 75 NC

1st Shuichi Kodaka (17) 32pts

2nd Gavin Hargrave (29) 31pts

3rd Alan Gadsby (18) 30pts

4th Rod Howett (22) 30pts

5th Al Rolnik (17) 30pts

After a tough day out earlier in the week at the other end of Bann Chang, the action moved to Eastern Star where the course was found to be in very good condition allowing for the recent weather, which had left the course extremely wet making the length even longer than usual. Even though the rule of the day was “lift and place” in the fairways, scoring was at a premium with none of the contestants getting anywhere near to their handicaps as the CSS for the day went out by three shots and the event became a non counting one for handicap purposes.

Shuichi Kodaka returned the best card of the day, a hard earned four over, to take the top spot by a single stroke from Gavin Hargrave.

They were followed by a three-way tie a further shot back, that was settled by count back with Alan Gadsby once more getting into the action, winning out with 16 over the inward nine as Rod Howett just pipped Al Rolnik for fourth with a better 10 to 9 on the last six after they had tied at 15 for the nine.

With the conditions much harder it was even more surprisingly than Monday’s result, when there were no 2’s, there was a 2 in both divisions today. Trevor Schirmer scored one in the first division and Rod Howett had one in the second division.

Note: The Haven group now departs Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would like to play with the group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday,

Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Vincenzi edges Hewitt on count-back

Jomtien Golf with the IPGC

Treasure Hill winner, Colin James (center), poses with staff members at Siam Cats.

Monday, August 22, Treasure Hill – Stableford

There was only one division out today and we arrived to an almost deserted course and teed off well ahead of schedule again. The course was in reasonable condition and everyone enjoyed the round.

We played off the yellow tees today and with 35 points Colin James won the division ahead of Neville Scurrell in second on 33, who beat Ian Hart on a 18/16 back nine count back. Chris Voller birdied the 13th to win the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there were 5 rollovers carried forward in division 2.

Wednesday, August 24, Crystal Bay – Stableford

This was our first visit here for some time after being prompted by many reports extolling the quality of the course. The A and C nines were played today and all the players were thoroughly impressed with the condition of the layout.

There were two divisions out today with the cut at 7-19 and 20+. Two 38’s in division 1 topped the podium with Harry Vincenzi beating Billy Hewitt on a back six count back of 16/11 after they both scored 19 on the back nine. In division 2 Johnny Larsson won with 35 points, beating Brian Priestley by one who in turn edged the Hong Kong boy Martyn Arnold on a 18/17 back nine count back.

There were no ‘2’s in division 1 but Martyn birdied the 7th on the C course to scoop the jackpot in division 2.

Friday, August 26, Eastern Star - Stableford

As we left Siam Cats and headed down Sukhumvit towards Baan Chang the clouds in the distance were building up and looking very murky. We entered the course and there were a few spots of rain on the windscreen as we approached the bag drop.

It was an Eastern Star rollover extravaganza day with 48 players out in a three divisional men’s competition, plus the ladies of course. The first group teed off in a very slight drizzle and by the fifth hole the rain had increased and we introduced ‘pick ,clean and place’ on the fairways from this tee onwards. By the time the first group reached the seventh tee there was a twenty minute wait as the rain increased and by now the fairway here was waterlogged, so the day’s competition was cancelled and put on hold until next Friday.

Ten of the 12 groups started and they all received rain checks, thank you Eastern Star.

Hurley finds his form

PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society

Star of the week, Richard Hurley.

Tuesday, August 23,
Green Valley – Stableford

When we arrived here today the course was not very busy, so we had a nice clear round of just on four hours with only two players managing to break par and both of them single figure handicappers.

Richard Hurley (43pts) totally eclipsed poor Jason Coles great round of 39 in division 1, whilst in the second division (Steady Eddie) Tony Duthie took the honours with 35 points. There was a three-way count-back for second place with Jimmy Johnson just losing out 19-18 on the back nine and Don Carmody losing out on the back six to Ken Priddy on his final round before returning to the U.K.

Near pins went to Ken Priddy, Jason Cole, Fred Land and Dave Done.

A Flight

1st Richard Hurley (9) 43pts

2nd Jason Cole (7) 39pts

3rd Andy Mills (8) 32pts

B Flight

1st Tony Duthie (21) 35pts

2nd Ken Priddy (24) 33pts

3rd Don Carmody (23) 33pts

Thursday, August 25,
Burapha - Stableford

Once again we arrived at the course and got off to a good start, teeing of 15 minutes early with no one in front of us. So we breezed around in just over three and a half hours.

This course is always a good test of golf and today was no different as nobody managed to break par. Jon Lay, electing to play off the blue tees, came closest with a really solid round of 35 points whilst the rest of us wimps teed off of the white tees.

With not so many players out today we decided to have only one division and yet again (Steady Eddie) Tony Duthie came in with 33 points to take second place ahead of Larry Bland.

Near pins went to Richard Hurley, Larry Bland (2) and Toby O’Neill.

1st Jon Lay (7) 35pts

2nd Tony Duthie (21) 33pts

3rd Larry Bland (11) 30pts

Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road. Anyone wishing to play with us can call into the club house and put their names down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379. Transport provided if required.

Double trip up 331 provides ‘value golf’

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Jim, Bill, Allan & Martin.

Tuesday, August 23, Greenwood - Skins

Our first trip of the week was on Tuesday when we visited Greenwood, last week’s PSC Monthly venue, with the C&B combination our allotted test. The course was in good condition, with the greens running smooth, but not deadly fast, as they can be on occasions.

We continued our Skins format today, with Jeff, Allan & Ray leading the way. Clive & Martin had their chances, but missed putts proved costly and conversely some holed putts by others to halve holes kept the pot alive.

Thursday, August 25, Century Chonburi - Stableford

Century Chonburi was our Thursday venue, a diamond in the rough for sure. Great value, good layout in decent condition cannot be faulted, (ok, perhaps the change room).

With the return of some regulars we held our normal competition with near pins going to Allan, Jimmy & Martin, while Jeff (6) led the way with 39 points, ahead of Bill Bertram (8) with 36.

With several of our regular players returning over the upcoming weeks, it is expected we will be resuming our regular competitions over the next few weeks.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with presentation at the course Tuesday & Mulligans Lakeside hosting on Thursdays. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Ryder pips Johnston on count-back

August Diana Seniors and Lady’s Open

(Left-right): Henry Wong, Orn Kanasaengsri and Mike Ryder.

Nigel Cannon

Thursday, August 25 - Pattaya Country Club

With 23 players this month it was a two flight competition plus the ladies – although there were just 3 of them. There were a number playing for the first time and some ‘returnees’. The weather was perfect for golf, little sun, a little wind and not too hot. Once again the course was in good condition although some of the bunkers need attention.

Of the 3 ladies, Orn Kanasaengsri (H/cap 16) provided the best score with 37 points.

In the Seniors (50 – 64) it was the ‘inform’ Henry Wong (23) who came top with 38 points, closely followed by ‘hoppy’ Tom Byrne (15) with 37 points who got the nod over his good friend Joe McArkle on count-back.

It needed countback to provide the winner in the Super Seniors (65+) with both Michael Johnston (17) and Mike Ryder (29) coming in with a fine 39 points each and Mike taking pole!

Near pin prizes were collected by Werner Schwarz, Dennis Persson and Mike Ryder with one going unclaimed.

Alan Pearce calculated the results allowing the presentation to take place soon after the last group came in. All scores are submitted to Pattaya Sports Club.

The next Diana Seniors and Ladies open is on Thursday 29th September at Pattaya Country Club with a tee time of 0900. Sign-up sheets are at Diana Green Bottle on 2nd road and the Diana Driving range.

Neylon’s new found form

PSC Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s winners pose for a photo with the staff of The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard

Tuesday, August 23, Phoenix G.C. - Stableford

It’s a worrying time when there are more staff of the Relax Bar in the photo than players. Well it’s that time of year when everyone seems to be away or out of town. Only 8 players for this week’s game, but the scoring was very good.

I am now happy to report that the courses of Phoenix are now well up to near perfect. All we need now is for the sadistic green keeper to place the holes in some easier positions. There were a few four putts today. However the greens of Phoenix are the amongst most difficult in the area and this is what makes Phoenix a good test for golfers.

With only a few playing today there was not much money left for the winners after we had paid for the first round of drinks out of the day’s entrance fees.

Bob Neylon played some inspired golf today to record a super 39 points. This not only won him the first prize, but he also gave me great pleasure by being my partner in our little four-ball matchplay game.

In second place was our Mr. Consistency, Clive Robinson, who must have thought that his gross 76 (38pts) would have been good enough to have won the day.

No near pins today and only two lucky draw prizes donated by our hosts The Relax Bar, which were a free drink and a free massage. These were won by Kevin Callaghan and Dave Boran.

We have more players signed up for next week when we play for the prestigious Trattoria Italiana voucher.

Anyone interested in joining in with our little group please call me on 087 091 7565.

Football tournament held to benefit children’s homes

Calli and Thai national football coach Winfried Schäfer meet the orphanage kids prior to the tournament.

Elfi Seitz

A very special football tournament was held on the weekend of 13th and 14th of August and the winners were already known before the event had even started: the children of the Pattaya Orphanage and the Child Development and Protection Center. The proceeds of the charity tournament, 300.000 Baht in total, will be added to the “Educational Fund” to support the childrenดs schooling.

Twelve teams participated in the event and the tournamentดs draw was carried out by Thailandดs new German football coach Winfried Schไfer and Reiner “Calli” Calmund, Germanyดs legendary football manager, reporter and journalist.

On the tournamentดs first day, the qualifying round was held at the wonderful football field of the CDPC in Hua Yai. All teams were sponsored and once again Gerrit Niehaus, owner of the Thai Garden Resort, was one of the main sponsors.

The winning Siam Sport Deutscher Fußball Fanklub team receive the trophy from Reiner “Calli” Calmund.

Calli attracted some skilful players to the tournament and sponsored the “Siam Sport Deutscher Fu฿ball Fanklub” team, which consists of honorary members like Franz Beckenbauer, Uwe Seeler, Gerd Müller, Jürgen Klinsmann, Rudi Völler, Berti Vogts and many other famous German players and coaches, while Calli functions as honorary chairman of the club. Many other business people supported other participating teams with the amount of 20.000 Baht each.

The qualifying round showed excellent sport and skilful players, however only the best teams were going to the finals on the following Sunday at the Pattaya Orphanage, where Gerrit Niehaus had donated a great lawn football field.

The finals offered very interesting matches and despite the extreme heat, the players showed much enthusiasm and even Winfried Schไfer and Calli Calmund were impressed by the high levels of the competition.

Among the spectators were Ewald Dietrich, president and founder of the Human Help Network, Gerrit Niehaus and Rene Pisters from the Thai Garden Resort, Reiner Calmund and Winfried Schäfer, YWCA¸s Nittaya Patimasongkroh, and all the other sponsors like Hans Günther Müller, Martin Ruegsegger and of course the orphanageดs “kind soul” Radchada Chomjinda, who all appeared to cheer for their favorite teams while enjoying the sponsored food and drinks at the event.

Finally the winners were ascertained: Reiner Calmund¸s team won the tournament, runners up were the “Line Thai Souvenir & Silver” team, sponsored by Mermaids Diving Center and the third place was captured by the “Heiko and Friends” team sponsored by the “V๖lklinger Kreis”.

Eventually a great and successful football weekend came to an end and the children who benefited from the event can be really happy to have such wonderful people to support them.

Team sponsors were: Hans Günther Müller, Thai Garden Resort, Bäckerei Lipps, “Calli” Calmund, Völklinger Kreis, Poseidon, Family Dietrich, David Edmondson, Pattaya Sports Club, Farang Magazine, Castrol, and the Mermaids Diving Center, which donated additional 10.000 Baht for food and drinks. Donald Robert Anderson and Siegfried and Agneta Egger also made generous donations.

Gerrit Niehaus presents the runner-up trophy to the Thai
Souvenir & SilverLine team.
