a 509, Joe Ferral 504 and Pao Orawan 500. Kran Nielsen had a 524 series for
Kronborg.
Fourth place Bavaria won four points from Brother D and
they moved closer to third place. Antero Ronkainen bowled a 503 series which
was the best of the 5 bowlers who all were having trouble with lanes 11 and
12.
Ooy Pluemkamon led VFW Post 9876 with games of 186, 189
and 201 for a 576 series and a three point win over Canada.

Cere carries on in fine form
PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society
Friday, Jan. 6, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
Everybody agreed that it was well worth the journey today
to play this course as it is in excellent condition and the facilities are
first rate. We also virtually had the course to ourselves which was
surprising, as it is such good value for money at the moment.
![](pictures/s5-Fairways-963.jpg)
Friday’s winner Pier Cere.
Pier Cere carried on with his fine run of form to take
the A flight with 40 points from Karl Flood in second spot on 36, while
Shane Ruddle limped in with 34 points to fill third place.
Bob Poole ran away with the B flight on 37 points from
Ken Meek (34pts) while Tony Duthie just pipped Toby O’Neill for third place
on a back nine count back of 15/14.
Near Pins went to Pier Cere, Jon Lay, Tony Duthie and
Karl Flood.
Note: The Fairways golf society & driving range is

San Miguel Stu celebrates the New Year in style
PSC golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, Jan. 3, Pleasant
Valley – Stableford
This was our first outing of 2012 and we had 39 golfers
signed up to take on the popular Pleasant Valley. Unfortunately there were 2
“no shows” which cut the field down to 37 but it was still a very good start
to the year and there was a buzz in Caf้ Kronborg as we prepared for the
day’s competition.
![](pictures/s8-Kronborg-963-1.jpg)
Tuesday’s flight
winners Dave Richardson & Stu Rifkin.
We were happy to welcome Urs Zwicky from Switzerland,
Peter Hall from Canada/Japan and Rune Aasheim & Per Brandsrod from Norway.
Departing the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs it was
just a 42 minute trip and we were there. Being another Thai Public Holiday
the course was very busy as expected but we managed to get our first group
away 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 0945 hrs.
We had encountered some light rain during our trip to the
course and indeed it was that way for brief periods of the day but never at
any stage heavy enough to get the brolly up. The course was looking in fine
shape and the greens were excellent although a touch slower than the ones we
have been playing on for the last couple of weeks. If there was one negative
it was the bunkers which need to have some work done on them and hopefully
this will be done before the PSC Monthly Medal next month.
It was an enjoyable and leisurely round of golf which was
completed in four hours and twenty five minutes, a good time considering
there were 216 golfers on the course on the day.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 18
and B Flight for 19 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all
four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
![](pictures/s8-Kronborg-963-2.jpg)
Thursday’s flight winners Don
Richardson and Scott Lobenwein with ‘The Admiral’.
When we played here last month there were 2 golfers with
45 points and a host of others with 40 plus but this time for some the
course was even less difficult.
Getting back into the swing of things after not much golf
over the past month or so and sporting a brand new number two haircut, my
old mate San Miguel Stu Rifkin won the A Flight with a massive 48 points! 6
points further back but still with a great score was Niels Hansen in second
place and Alain Taddei with 41 points finished third. Jean Morel’s 39 points
earned him fourth place and Richard Kubicki finished fifth on 38 points. A
five-way count back for sixth spot saw Walter Baechli (20 point back nine,
14 points last 6 holes) finish sixth ahead of Mike Gosden (20 point back
nine, 11 points last 6 holes) with both players on 37 points. Also on the
same score were Ted Morris, Rob Brown & Kris Helgason.
The Admiral himself had a day out and won the B Flight
with 41 points, just 1 point in front of Graham Buckingham in second place.
A count back saw Bjarne Kjaer (22 point back nine) finish third from Urs
Zwicky (18 point back nine) in fourth place, both having 39 points. Wendy
Bernek finished fifth on 38 points and Per Brandsrod was sixth with 37
points.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Stu Rifkin (15) 48pts
2nd Niels Hansen (15) 42pts
3rd Alain Taddei (17) 41pts
4th Jean Morel (18) 39pts
5th Richard Kubicki (15) 38pts
6th Walter Baechli (17) 37pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Dave Richardson (25) 41pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (23) 40pts
3rd Bjarne Kjaer (21) 39pts
4th Urs Zwicky (23) 39pts
5th Wendy Bernek (32) 38pts
6th Per Brandsrod (25) 37pts
Near Pins: 5th Peter
Hammond; 8th Rita Zoebeli; 13th
Frank Sharratt; 17th Mike Winfield
Long Putts: 9th Leif
Kirkgaard, 18th Stu Rifkin
The Compass Cap (worst score on the day) was won in a
count back by Rita Zoebeli from Andre Van Dyk, and Deefa the Dog collected
many donations for charity.
Thursday, Jan. 5, Mountain
Shadow – Stableford
Once more we had a terrific field with 38 golfers signed
up for the day and this time there were no annoying “no shows” as we
assembled at Caf้ Kronborg in readiness for the trip to the challenging
Mountain Shadow Golf Course.
Welcomes were handed out to Gordon Uvanile from Canada,
Alan Dornan from New Zealand and Eddie Glinsek from the U.S.A. We also
wished Bon Voyage to Scott (Chun) Lobenwein who was returning to Australia
in the next few days.
Departing the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs in 4
minivans we headed off to the course but unfortunately one of the vans had a
new driver who somehow got lost on the way, so what should have been a 45
minute trip turned into a 60 minute one. We arrived with plenty of time to
spare however and as the course was not busy the first of our 10 groups got
away 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 0940 hrs in fabulous golfing weather
conditions. The sun was shining but not too hot and a gentle breeze made
things very pleasant throughout the round.
Unfortunately after four holes one of our group was taken
ill and he returned to the clubhouse from where he was eventually taken to
hospital by ambulance. We wish Elias a speedy recovery and hope to see him
back playing with us very soon and thanks to Dr Paul Cardwell for his expert
assistance. Our now a threesome continued in very brisk fashion and after a
couple of drink stops we completed our round in the very good time of three
hours and fifty minutes. The course was in great condition with the greens
as well maintained & slick as ever.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 19
and B Flight for 20 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin on all
four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth greens.
In sharp contrast to Tuesday’s game at Pleasant Valley
there were no runaway scores, which accentuates the difference in degree of
difficulty of the two courses. A Flight was won in a count back by Don
Richardson (19 point back nine) ahead of Richard Kubicki (17 point back
nine) in second place, both having 37 points. In third place came Aussie
Paul Avery on 36 points with Scot Rob Brown fourth on 34 points. Another
count back was necessary to decide fifth & sixth places and Dr Paul Cardwell
(17 point back nine) edged out Niels Hansen (15 point back nine), both with
33 points.
Celebrating his last game in style, Scott (Chun)
Lobenwein (21 point back nine) won B Flight with 38 points in a three-way
count back from Daryl Evans (19 point back nine, 15 points last 6 holes) and
Hugh O’Donnell (19 point back nine, 14 points last 6 holes). In fourth spot
was The Admiral with 37 points and yet another count back was necessary to
decide fifth & sixth places. In a very tight one Mike Winfield (13 point
back nine, 8 points last 6 holes, 6 points last 3 holes and 8 for 1 on the
14th hole) just scraped home from Urs Zwicky (same
last 9 hole stats but with no score on hole no. 14). Both golfers had 34
points for the round.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Don Richardson (12) 37pts
2nd Richard Kubicki (15) 37pts
3rd Paul Avery (10) 36pts
4th Rob Brown (8) 34pts
5th Paul Cardwell (16) 33pts
6th Niels Hansen (13) 33pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Scott Lobenwein (32) 38pts
2nd Daryl Evans (20) 38pts
3rd Hugh O’Donnell (25) 38pts
4th Dave Richardson (24) 37pts
5th Mike Winfield (21) 34pts
6th Urs Zwicky (23) 34pts
Near Pins: 5th Mashi Kaneta, 8th
Graham Buckingham, 15th Alan Dornan, 17th
Dave Richardson
Long Putts: 9th Rob Brown, 18th
Scott Lobenwein
The Compass Cap (worst score on the day) was easily won
by Eddie Glinsek with a record low score (not for publication) and Deefa the
Dog was paraded by his master, Hunter, and collected many donations to
charity from our generous Caf้ Kronborg group.

John Mac wins a close
game at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pictures/s9-Backyard963.jpg)
John Mac outside the Mam Beer Bar.
The Backyard Golf Society started out the new year with
our weekly game of golf at Emerald Golf Course. It was good to see that even
with all the celebrating going on that seven players still made the effort
to turn up.
With everyone in all competitions it was John Mac who
took the win with 35 points, beating JJ into second place by 1. Nearest the
pin also went to John Mac and the big winner in the skins was Geoff with
(8). Other skin winners are as follows: JJ (5), Terry C (2), Dan M (1), John
Mac (1), and one rollover.
After prize giving it was down to BC for a few cold ones
to see in the new year properly.
Goort goes Dutch
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group
![](pictures/s10-Phoenix-963.jpg)
Tuesday’s top three pose for
photo with the staff at the Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, Jan 3 Phoenix -
Stableford
I think I am correct in saying that it is the first time
Goort (pronounced Hoort) from Holland has won a Tuesday competition. After
struggling with his turn on the backswing he has now corrected it (for a
while that is) and is hitting the ball a lot straighter (It won’t last).
Sadly the first Tuesday of the month we do not have a
sponsored prize, so Goort would have been better off waiting until the
following week when we will have the KPK Food Services voucher as the main
prize. Ah well, some you win, some you don’t!
Goort scored a very respectable 38 points, with the
ever-consistent Stuart Gordon on 36 points claiming second prize and ‘big’
John Bartley scoring 34 points to take third place.
Near pins went to Patrick Browne, Mike Gerrard, Stuart
Gordon & Bob Neylon.
It was no wonder Bob Neylon won a near pin as today saw
another first - Bob on a cart!! Never been known before.
With all of the above names not being eligible for the
lucky draw the following names were the lucky recipients: The donated
massage from the Relax Bar went to newcomer Gerry McCarthy, with his friend
and another newcomer Andy Galvin winning the free drink, again donated by
the Relax Bar, and the third consolation lucky draw prize went to our own
David Czernie.
Friday, Jan. 6,
Phoenix – Stableford
With an ever-increasing field of players growing each
week we were subjected to the Thai way of disorganization. It seemed that
because a tour group had called late for tee times the regular members got
pushed back. It is little wonder when you realise that the late booking
group will pay megga bucks for club hire, carts and green fees, as opposed
to our members’ rate.
So not only teeing off some 20 minutes later than booked,
we had to endure the caddies being allotted to the tour company as well and
we had to wait for some replacements. Pity the poor caddies at this time of
the year.
Because of financial problems it seems that the courses
have laid off a lot of labour this year, including caddies and most of them
are subjected to having to work from 5.00am and caddy for the early birds
and then when they have finished they are made to go round again to caddy
for the afternoon players. Just imagine walking 18 holes pulling the heavy
carts and then having to go and do it all again in the heat of the day.
Strong girls eh!
So Graham Ellis managed to overpower everyone else today
with a fantastic 34 points. Yes folks, it was that sort of day. In second
place was Peter Harris with 33 points and amazingly your truly Mike Gerrard
was in third with 32 points. Consolation fourth place went to Mukesh Thakker
with 29 points (could not believe it.)
You know it’s going to be one of them days when for the
first time in a long time I asked someone else to organize the near pins.
Think again McDuff! No near pins were put by the first group out. Afterwards
at the inquest it became very clear that Denis Dixon should, never ever
apply for any managerial position.
Never mind, by investigation and honesty from the players
we manage to work out who won the near pin prizes. They were Mukesh Thakker,
Minere Khan & Peter Harris, with one not claimed that went into the lucky
draw.
The winners of the lucky draw prizes were Angel Matamala,
Denis Dixon (whom we did not want to give it to - but we did), Don DeCosta
and Goort Gelten.
Much merriment was had by all until we drifted off home
(or to someone else’s home) and we are looking forward to the next encounter
with the fairways of Phoenix (the fairways are O.K. - it’s the greens that
are the tricky bit now!)
For information on golf at phoenix and sea fishing call

The French Connection
PSC golf from The Golf Club
![](pictures/s11-Club-963.jpg)
Controlled chaos on the first
tee at Greenwood.
Bob Newell
Monday, Jan. 2, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ernie Hill (0) 38pts
2nd Patrick Kelly (+2) 38pts
3rd Bob Newell (7) 37pts
4th Grant Montgomery (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st Marlene Prudden (23) 40pts
2nd Michael Jones (12) 37pts
3rd Gregg D (25) 36pts
4th Nick Handscombe (12) 36pts
Well, as you can see, the new year started off with some
exceptional scoring and some quite remarkable statistics for such a small
golfing venue. There were 16 single figure guys in the field and no fewer
than 3 players at scratch or better! That’s a top quality turnout in
anybody’s book.
Finding himself in ‘B’ flight, despite being a 12
handicapper himself, Nick Handscombe shot a good par round but only grabbed
4th. Beating him by way of count back was Gregg D. At
least I think that’s what the card said anyhow!
One of a group of our Scottish friends, Michael Jones,
piped in the new year with a solid 37 and 2nd. But
with a nice leaving present as she and hubby are now back in Oz was Marlene
Prudden with an excellent 40 point haul. The grumpy old man was on the
podium quite a bit on this trip but he was overshadowed today by Marlene.
Hurry back soon guys.
Up to ‘A’ and there was some top stuff here. Three guys
were in count back for 4th with Grant Montgomery
eventually taking the place ahead of Dave Mather and Alan Thomas. Asked why
he faded so badly after an amazing 24 point front 9, Dave simply said ‘I ran
out of vodka!’
Another who faded on the back was myself! Still not
recovered fully from my Himalayas trek I somehow managed to hold on, despite
a bogey, bogey finish and nab 3rd place. But the big
guns notched the 2 top spots.
I had the pleasure of playing alongside young Patrick
Kelly today (although he did play off the back tees) and it was a treat to
watch. If he had just had a bit better luck with the putter I shudder to
think what score he would have turned in as he had 4 birdies by 11 and
lipped out for eagle on 14! Sadly he made his only bogey of the day on 18
and allowed another top golfing star in his own right, Ernie Hill, to turn
it all around by birdying 18 and taking the day’s honours.
Patrick will be attempting the Asian Qualifying School
this week, by way of gathering much needed experience, after all he’s only
just turned seventeen! We wish him all the best - go get ‘em mate!
Wednesday, Jan. 4,
Greenwood - Golf Club/Lewinski
Challenge (Day 1)
A Flight
1st JP Maffray (12) 42pts
2nd Terry Mangan (14) 40pts
3rd Francis Goyen (9) 40pts
4th Thierry Petremont (12) 38pts
B Flight
1st John Feehan (16) 42pts
2nd Alan White (22) 39pts
3rd Vee (22) 36pts
4th Mike Jeffries (18) 36pts
2’s: Christy Knight, Dave Shelton
For our 3rd ever co-sanctioned
event with Lewinskis it was a little disappointing to see a somewhat poorer
turnout than anticipated, from both bars, but the Golf Club in particular.
It makes you wonder just what you have to do to get people motivated. I try
new events and initiatives as much as I possibly can, and can only hope that
people then want to be a part of them and help THEIR golf society grow.
I, frankly, find it very disheartening, at 800 baht green
fee and caddy fee - I don’t know what more we can do. Thankfully the evening
presentation was fantastically well supported and a great success with all
the winners, bar one (same as usual!), making the effort to come and enjoy
the night.
Once again the staff coped admirably and our thanks go
out to them. Talking of winners and seemingly another regular occurrence,
the leaderboard was again sprinkled with Frenchmen, you know who I’m taking
about TP!
Good and great scores abounded, which is somewhat unusual
here, normally anywhere around par is pushing for 1st
place but not today. A huge crush for 3rd and 4th
place in ‘B’ division saw 5 guys scrapping for the 2 places, all on that par
number of 36. Warren Holland, Christy Knight and Gabriel Enright were the 3
to miss out with 4th going to Mike Jeffries and Vee
getting 3rd.
It seems it’s a week for the one-name players this
week... should be fine if ever Sting, Lulu or Prince come knocking for a
game! I think I might make the sign-up sheet just pseudonyms from now on,
just to make it that little bit more difficult to understand!
A good 3 shots clear in 2nd spot
was Alan White and yet another 3 clear with a blistering 42 points was ‘B’
flight winner John Feehan.
Before we get on to A Flight a little reminder about
clearly marking down your ‘2’s in these competitions. Only on a last minute
double-check did I spot a ‘2’, that hadn’t been highlighted, up until then
there had been only one other. It’s your responsibility gentlemen for making
sure that we can see them on the card, with 50, 60 or even 70 odd cards to
check we cant be held responsible if we find later that they haven’t been
sufficiently marked. It almost made one guy even more happy and one 1,200
baht worse off.
A Flight today produced the brunt of the scoring, with
poor old Grant Montgomery missing out with a very good 38. With a bit of
‘ooh la la’ the French boys tipped their berets and made it look easy.
Fourth with 39 was Thierry Petremont and his sparring partner Francis Goyen
got 3rd, losing on count back to everyone’s favourite
Irishman, the ever-smiling Terry ‘red card’ Mangan. A great 40 was the score
there. But atop the lot and fighting with John Feehan on Friday for the main
prize, was JP Maffray with another terrific 42.
It would be interesting to see if one of those could hold
on for the overall prize trophy. To find out, check out this week’s golf
report from Lewiinski’s contained elsewhere in the sports pages of this
newspaper.

Olliffe and Chabot share the Medals
The IPGC Monthly Medals Report January 2012
Wednesday, January 4,
Mountain Shadow (Blue Tees)
CSS 73
Division 1 (0-12)
(Stroke play)
1st Garry Olliffe (12) net 70
2nd Barney Sheedy (11) net 71
3rd Adi Mayer (6) net 71
Division 2 (13+)
(Stableford)
1st Paul Chabot (26) 45pts
2nd Willy Van Heetvelde (27) 39pts
3rd Tom Atkins (13) 34pts
2’s: Ron Miller, Fred Land, Tom Atkins, Garry
Olliffe, Barney Sheedy, Paul Chabot, Alan Griffiths
![](pictures/s12-IPGC-963-1.jpg)
Garry Olliffe (left) receives
his Division 1 winner’s prize from Stephen Beard.
This month’s IPGC Medals were held over the always
difficult Mountain Shadow course that had been reputedly designed and built
for players with 15 handicaps and below, and not recommended for those with
handicaps higher than that. With a strong breeze blowing for most of the
day, it was therefore little surprise that the scores for the day were
mostly higher than the participants would have wished for, excepting that
two players in the second division outshone all the reputedly better golfers
with outstanding rounds of golf that they will surely long remember.
In the second division, which was playing for the Medal
under the Stableford system, Paul Chabot had what must have been a dream
day, as he went out in 22 points and back in 23 to sweep to the top of the
leader board and in the process not only win the first medal of the year but
a four shot reduction in handicap. This reduction exactly matches the number
of strokes he lost over the whole of the previous year which had seen his
handicap work down steadily from 30 to 26, underlining how well he had
performed on the day.
Willy van Heetvelde almost overshadowed the winner’s
accomplishments with a stunning 25 points going out but then slipped badly
over the closing holes and had to settle for a well deserved second place.
![](pictures/s12-IPGC-963-2.jpg)
Paul Chabot (left) was the
winner in Division 2.
Tom Atkins, having only just arrived from a year at work
in the UK and not quite managing to match the leading pair, still did just
enough to claim third place with a round a couple of strokes above his
handicap.
The first division was a much closer affair with Garry
Olliffe winning by the narrowest of margins by one stroke, after having
declared a two shot reduction in his handicap prior to starting off the
round, thereby giving a great example of what golf is all about.
Barney Sheedy, another recent arrival but this time from
the Emerald Isle, started out very slowly but picked up the pace over the
back nine to win a count back over Adi Mayer with a better 33.5 to 38, as
Adi had matched Barney’s inward score on the outward half but sadly faded as
the pressure mounted over the last three holes and had to be satisfied with
third place for the day.
Every month the presentations are held at one of the IPGC
venues in rotation, this month’s being held at The Haven, where as usual an
open buffet had been laid on for the participants for two hours prior to the
presentations.
After thanking the golf organizers, Len Jones, Russell
Exley, Glyn Evans and Steve Mascari for promoting the day and then the
catering and service staff at The Haven for the magnificent spread, Stephen
Beard handed over to Russell who acted as the Emcee for the evening with
Stephen presenting the Medals and prizes to the winners.
As usual following the prize giving there were over
twenty lucky draw prizes supplied from the club funds to be won by members
attending the evening festivities.

Terry’s in charge
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
![](pictures/s13-Lewiinsk-1.jpg)
Colin Davis, Terry Mangan
and Bob Newell.
Sunday, Jan 1, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Kelly (10) 37pts
2nd Gareth Gill (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 37pts
2nd Brian Wilkinson (15) 37pts
As expected it was a small but talented group, due no
doubt to the previous night’s celebrations, that kicked off the
society’s first new year’s game.
Colin ‘The Donkey’ Davis got the bit between his
teeth to win B Flight and a share of man of the match via a count back
victory over Brian ‘the unbalanced’, who did explain it could have been
better.
![](pictures/s13-Lewiinsk-2.jpg)
Frank McNamara and Vera.
Peter Kelly, the father of one of Irelands’ newest
emerging golf stars, came out of his son’s shadow to take the top podium
spot in the senior flight and share with the Donkey the man of the match
honors. Gareth Gill took the silver one shot adrift. Patrick would have
filled third place but unfortunately the numbers playing only warranted
two podium spots.
Paul Shaw and Bob Newell split the 2’s pot.
Monday, Jan 2, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
A Flight
1st Frank McNamara (17) 37pts
2nd Lou Szigligeti (17) 37pts
B Flight
1st Doulton Reece (18) 37pts
2nd Alan White (14) 34pts
It was off to Rayong Country Club for the lads and
lasses, which turned out to be a bit of a nightmare as they were greeted
with a double booking - no carts and no caddies (the latter was sorted
out when the management raided the local school).
The state of the course, which had made great strides
to find its former glory, is sadly in need of some urgent attention.
That said, it did not put off big Frank and returning mountaineer Lou
Zigzag as they set the pace in A Fight with 37 point apiece. Frank’s
better back nine gained him the top podium place with Lou filling the
second berth.
37 points was the total needed to win the junior
flight and this was supplied by Doulton Reece. Alan White rounded out
the flight with a count back victory over the ever green Joe ‘sat-nav’
Tynan. Joe was left in a daze.
Lou Szigligeti, John Feehan and Brian Byrne shared
the 2’s pot.
Note: Wednesday’s report is a joint Golf Club venture
- please see the Golf Club report located else were in the sports pages.
Friday, Jan. 6,
Mountain Shadow - Lewinski’s/Golf Challenge (Day 2)
A Flight
1st Gregor McCallum (13) 38pts
2nd J-P Gasser (13) 36pts
3rd Ed Wyckoff (11) 33pts
B Flight
1st Terry Mangan (14) 38pts
2nd John Feehan (16) 35pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (17) 35pts
C Flight
1st Warren Holland (25) 30pts
2nd Charlie Cunningham (19)
30pts
3rd John O’Neil (19) 30pts
Long Drive: Paraic McManus
Long Putt: Veco
Near Pins: No 5 J-P Maffrey; No 8 Athole Reid; No
15 Ed Wyckoff; No 17 Michael Jones.
A much better turnout for the second day of the
Lewiinski’s and the Golf Club comp turned up to tackle the formidable
Mountain Shadow.
Leading the field after the first day at Greenwood
were J-P Gasser and John Feehan, both carding 42 sparkling points,
closely followed by Francis Goyons and Terry Mangan on 40 points. There
were lots of players in the high 30’s so it was anybody’s game.
Gregor Callum took the top place in A Flight with a
rock solid 38 points followed closely by J-P Gasser who was two strokes
adrift for the silver. ‘Our man at the White House’ Ed Wyckoff filled
the flight a further three shots back.
Skipping down to C Flight saw the lads really
struggle with the course as three players tied for first on 33 points;
Warren Holland, Charlie Cunningham and John O’Neil, and the resulting
count back determined that they finished in that order.
Terry ‘red card’ Mangan stood atop the podium in the
Irish Flight as his 38 points was good for a share of the man of the
match. Terry and A Flight’s Gregor McCallum were the only two players to
better par on the day. Terry was three clear of close mate John Feehan
and good friend Peter ‘Don O’corleone’ Henshaw. John had the better of
the count back over Peter.
Back at Lewiinski’s it was time for the presentation
and when the previous scores were totaled up there was only one winner,
Ireland’s Terry Mangan with a fantastic total of 78 points.
When the prize giving was finished, Colin thanked the
staff for all the hard work they had put in, especially into laying on
the famous Lewiinski’s buffet, and to all who had participated in the
event.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land
Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to
play with the group can just pop in and add their name to the list or
call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Pot of gold claimed at last
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, January 2, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS72
1st Keith Wooley (13) 34pts
2nd Markku Tynell (26) 32pts
3rd Wayne Challis (14) 30pts
4th Rodney Hayes (11) 30pts
With many of the usual suspects suffering from an
overindulgence during the New Year’s celebrations it was a much smaller
group that gathered for the trip to the Emerald, where as now is usual the
local rule of ‘lift and place’ was utilised to make up for the condition of
the fairways generally.
![](pictures/s14-Haven963-1.jpg)
Keith Wooley.
Keith Wooley, playing with the group for the first time,
was pleasantly surprised to find that two over handicap was sufficient to
win straight out of the box and promised to return as soon as possible to
continue with the start of the harvest whenever his work schedule allows.
Markku Tynell is another player to find recently that
four over will get one onto the podium quite often as the recent weather
conditions make playing to handicap a bit of a pipe dream for most, and
again took another placing with a score that will see his handicap move in a
negative fashion.
Wayne Challis won a count back by 15 to 14 to push Rodney
Hayes down to fourth after they had both struggled throughout the round.
![](pictures/s14-Haven963-2.jpg)
Al Keith.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division also
there were none in the first division.
Before presenting the prizes Stephen Beard welcomed new
member Keith Wooley.
Wednesday everyone was attending at the IPGC monthly
Medals a report of which can be found on other pages this week.
Friday, January 6, Pattaya
Country Club - Stableford
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–18)
1st Al Keith (5) 36pts
2nd Mike Dabanovich (10) 34pts
3rd Al Rolnik (18) 33pts
Division 2 (19+)
1st Alwyne Burley (19) 39pts
2nd Mike Hill (25) 35pts
3rd Markku Tynell (26) 32pts
After a sufficient recuperation period, a much larger
contingent set out for the nearest course in the area at Pattaya Country
Club which is showing positive signs of additional work around the greens
and fairways and although the distant areas are still rather agricultural in
appearance, it is a very good value for money option which takes half the
time to reach than many other courses in the area and well worth a visit on
a regular basis.
![](pictures/s14-Haven963-3.jpg)
Alwyne Burley.
In the first division Al Keith displayed his usual class
with a solid level handicap round that as normal produced few fireworks but
lots of application to win by two from Mike Dabanovich, who could should and
would have won had he not thrown it all away with a scoreless last hole when
a simple par 5 would have taken all the marbles and relegated his playing
partner Al to second place instead.
Al Rolnik kept it going for most of the round and was
rewarded with third spot.
The second division was a much more open result with
Alwyne Burley at last finding the right set of hire clubs from the Haven’s
storeroom to take his first win by a clear four strokes ahead of Mike Hill
in second, with the ever present Markku Tynell again getting paid for a four
over return, begging the question of “how many are the others scoring?” in
the second division.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but at
last the second division super pot was laid claim to by no less than two
players as Both Markku Tynell and Brian Lewis did what so many had striven
to accomplish over a couple of weeks or more of trying, making it a very
happy return for Brian and a good reward for all of Markku’s time spent at
the range.
Back at The Haven there were welcomes for Dave Bakes and
David Weakley and also welcome backs for Brian Lewis, Roar Berger, Alan
Hanlon and Ian Potter.
There was also a farewell for Peter Hall returning to
Japan to continue his preparations for the next big Triathlon event.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel at
185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday,
Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of
courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.
thehaven-hotel.com.

A good week for Sheedy
IPGC golf from The Links
Tuesday, January 3, Lotus
Valley – Stableford
The Links kicked off the New Year with a visit to Lotus
Valley, which has long been a favorite of the regulars; the immaculate
conditioning of the course and usually empty car park offsetting the long
journey, although most agreed the greens could do with speeding up a little.
As Lotus Valley is a little short off the white tees, the
25 participants were given the choice of which “flight” to join, with 11
choosing the blues at a little over 6,500 yards and 14 choosing the whites,
playing nearly 400 yards shorter.
In the White Flight, Joe McArdle showed a return to form,
carding a gross 79 for 41 points, narrowly edging out Sean McNamara on count
back with a better back 9 of 20 points to 19. Barney Sheedy was 4 points
back in third place.
Although a strong field including 6 single figure
handicappers chose to tackle the blues, the lack of run on the carpet-like
fairways saw the course playing longer than its 6,527 yards, and points were
much harder to come by, with only Peter Kelly managing to equal his
handicap, limping home with 14 points on the back 9 after a fantastic one
over gross front for 22 points. Grant Cadell finished second with 34 points
and Mark Stanley completed the places with 32.
Blue Flight
1st Peter Kelly (10) 36 pts
2nd Grant Cadell (14) 34pts
3rd Mark Stanley (13) 32pts
White Flight
1st Joe McArdle (12) 41pts
2nd Sean McNamara (10) 41pts
3rd Barney Sheedy (11) 37pts
Thursday, January 5,
Phoenix – Stableford
The windy conditions and threatening showers did not put
off the golfers as 23 made the short trip to Phoenix to play the Lake and
Ocean courses, again ensuring two flights, but this time split more
conventionally by handicap, with 12 players in the 0–16 category and 11 at
17+. The “ease” of the wide fairways was as usual offset by the fast greens,
meaning points were earned rather than given.
In the B Flight, Fred O’Connor took the spoils with a
hard earned 34 points, one ahead of both Ted Murphy and Sean Hallahan, with
Ted taking second on count back with a better back 6 of 13 to 12 after both
carded regulation 18 points on the Ocean course.
In the A Flight Barney Sheedy edged out Jon Batty for
first place. Both players scored a creditable 37 points, with Barney having
the better back 9 of 21 against 18. John Chambers completed the places two
back with 35.
Things got even better for Barney as he scored the only
‘2’ of the week, taking a triple rollover pot with his birdie at the short
second on the Lake course.
A Flight
1st Barney Sheedy (11) 37 pts
2nd Jon Batty (9) 37 pts
3rd John Chambers (7) 35 pts
B Flight
1st Fred ‘Connor (24) 34 pts
2nd Ted Murphy (21) 33 pts
3rd Sean Hallahan (18) 33 pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi Buakhao
at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10.00am for Pattaya Country Club
every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full
schedule of courses can be found on the IPGC website2 www.ipgc.org.

Morel kicks off the year nicely
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
A very healthy field of Pattaya Golf Society golfers
opened their new year account with a trip to Rayong Country Club on Monday,
2nd January, to play a stableford round at the group’s regular public
holiday venue. The course was in reasonable condition but was very dry with
slowish greens.
The large field was divided into two flights at nineteen
and under and apart from the regulars with the group returning friends made
the day more special.
In the second flight Evan Millar took third place with 30
points. In second, making a good start to the year was the Rabbi himself
recording a fine 33 points which should have been much better. Fifty-three
putts in a round is no good for anyone and a few hours on the practice green
are set to occupy his thoughts over the next few days. The flight winner was
Brendan Gilsenan with 34 points.
In the top flight Alan Griffiths joined Fred Land and
Larry Slattery in third place with 33 points, a couple behind Ray Banks’ 35
which made runner-up place his own after a fine end-of-year spell. The
winner was Jean Morel who conjured up the day’s only sub-par round of 37
points, accuracy not length being the hallmark of his game once again.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to
Peter Masters for transforming a five foot birdie putt on hole eleven into a
triple bogey. Having putting lessons from Rabbi, Peter?
It had been a fine start to the new year with the PGS and
it holds promise of good golfing experiences for the months to come.
Bolger realises potential
The Pattaya Golf Society’s largest turnout for three
years journeyed to Greenwood on Friday, 6th January, to contest a stableford
event in three flights with the cuts at 12 and 18. The assigned nines were B
and C and from the start the greens showed superb pace.
In the third flight Roy Bassett took third place with 33
points having completed an excellent front nine and playing partner Mr Len
went two better to share the flight win with Evan Millar on 35 points.
The top flight saw Ray Banks, Stuart Thomson and Gary
Olliffe all share runners-up place on 34 points whilst Wichai Tananusorn
posted another best gross as he recorded 38 points for the win.
It was in the second flight that things were happening.
Dave Wilkinson posted 33 points for third place, hot on the heels of Ronnie
Ramsay with 34. Gary Bolger came up with the display of the day with a round
of 42 points showing that when one’s game is “on” Greenwood is the place to
be. It was a round of raw power and accuracy and for the first time showed
what golf the Aussie giant is capable of.
There were ‘2’s for Sue Mawhinney, Robbie Taylor, Helene
Lindberg, Martin Hennessy and Roy Bassett, whilst Liam Slattery took his
first Booby Bevy after managing the day’s largest split of ten points.
It may be common knowledge that Greenwood is always in
good condition but the value for money deal currently on offer will draw the
crowds, as it did this day and must surely be a lesson from which other
clubs could learn and profit.

Kissy starts 2012 with a convincing win
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pictures/s17-Outback-963.jpg)
Thursday
runner-up Rosco (left) & winner Jason (2nd right) are congratulated by Noddy
(2nd left) & Alex (right).
Monday, Jan. 2, Khao Kheow
- Stableford
If Kissy Buchanan had not played, the best score that
anyone could muster at Khao Kheow was a very mediocre 32 points, attained by
Gary Hogg who was having his first game here in Thailand since July 2011,
when coincidentally his last game was also on the A & B nines here at Khao
Kheow. His 32 points earned him second place in Div A and Wes Rado got third
with the same score.
Jason Gale followed up his success at Green Valley last
Friday with another win here, also with 32 points and he beat John Player on
count back, who was also having his first game since returning from Aus.
Kissy Buchanan made an amazing 37 points to be five clear
of the rest of the field on a day when according to statistics, the course
played more than three shots tougher than par.
There was only one ‘2’ today from Wayne Cotterill on the
island green (B8) and for the record, 29 people played.
Div A (0-15)
1st Keith Buchanan (14/Hi13) 37pts
2nd Gary Hogg (7/Hi6.6) 32pts
3rd Wes Rado (14/Hi12.6) 32pts

Tuesday, Jan. 3, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
After some overnight rain, 24 turned out at Pattaya
Country Club where again the scoring was generally lower than could be
expected as Dennis Pelly won Div A with only 34 points ahead of Mike Bender
on 33. Our illustrious Tuesday organiser, Chad, took third on count back
ahead of Keith Allen and Paul Smets.
Two outstanding rounds from Doug Chalkley and Martin
O’Neill, both with 39, took the top spots in Div B, with the third placed
man, John White a long way back on 31.
There were four ‘2’s; two from Carl Luke on the 12th &
16th, Peter Fox (12th) and Mike Bender (16th)
Div A (0-18)

Div B (19+)
1st Doug Chalkley (19/Hi20.5) 39pts
2nd Martin O’Neill (25/Hi25.7)
39pts
3rd John White (22/Hi22.8) 31pts
Wednesday, Jan. 4, Burpaha
- Stableford
An excellent turnout after the holiday here at Burapha,
with 35 Outbackers playing the C & D nines. Ricky Poe excelled himself and
made the most of the additional 2 shots he received using the slope of the
course, to post the day’s top score of 41 points and win Div C by four from
Woolly (Graham Woollett) and Burapha regular, Bob Lindborg.
Another regular, Pete Stonebridge, wrapped up Div B with
34 points whilst the Capt’ stole Div A on count back from Paulie O’Mahoney,
both with 36.
There were two ‘2’s, both on hole 5, from Paulie
O’Mahoney & Alex Graham.
Div A (0-12)
1st Bob Philp (11/Hi10.7) 36pts
2nd Paulie O’Mahoney (8/Hi8.3)

3rd Brian O’Connor (9/Hi9.1) 35pts
Div B (13-18)
1st Pete Stonebridge (18/Hi17.2)

2nd Wes Rado (13/Hi12.6) 33pts
3rd John Locke (13/Hi13.2) 32pts
Div C (19+)

3rd Bob Lindborg (20/Hi19.3) 37pts
Thursday, Jan. 5, Eastern
Star - Stableford
Our first Thursday golf since November 2009, as we return
to five days per week, and very successful it proved to be with 19
Outbackers giving Eastern Star a go, our first visit here since last August.
The weather was slightly overcast and humid with some
sunny intervals but it remained dry; the course was in OK condition although
the greens were incredibly slow making it very difficult to get the ball to
the hole, uphill or downhill – the damn thing just wouldn’t roll! They were
however, (the greens) quite true.
The course was not busy so we were away just ahead of
time and Jason Gale made the most of the good pace of play, as he notched up
his third win out of four starts but this time at last, he attracted the
attention of the handicapper, as the computer calculated the course played 3
shots tougher than par. Jason scored 36 points ahead of Rosco Towers
(34pts), having his first game with the Outback (welcome to you Rosco) and
in third was Lee Adelly, who probably won’t really believe it, as he seemed
pretty pessimistic at the start. Well done Lee!
Finally, we’ll say nothing about the scores from the two
Jacks at the wrong end of the leader-board and not surprisingly, there were
no ‘2’s.
1st Jason Gale (22/Hi21.2) 36pts
2nd Rosco Towers (11) 34pts
3rd Lee Adelly (13/Hi12.8) 32pts
Friday, Jan. 6,
Green Valley - Stableford
After a bit of a mix up at the start, the 21 players got
underway on time to play at an excellent pace, with no groups grumbling
about having to wait, which is unusual for the time of year, particularly
here at Green Valley.
In a battle for the first division honours Paul Greenaway
edged out scratch player Mark McDonald, but only on count back as both of
them shot 36 points; and remember Mark’s was off the stick! (72 gross).
Course member and regular Ed Horrocks ran away with the
win in Div B with an excellent 43 points playing off 24, with a handicap
index of 23 exactly but he will find himself playing off 20 next week!
Some way back but still with a good round and 21 points
on the back nine was Joe Mooneyham on 37, and John Fitzgerald found a bit of
form to take third with 33 points.
There were four ‘2’s; two from Mark McDonald on 4th & 9th
holes and Gary Hogg & Andy Robertson both had one on the 16th.
Div A (0-13)
1st Paul Greenaway (7/Hi8.3) 36pts
2nd McDonald Mark (0/Hi1.9) 36pts
3rd Paul Bourke (9/Hi9.5) 34pts
Div B (14+)
1st Ed Horrocks (24/Hi23) 43pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (15/Hi15.1) 37pts
3rd John Fitzgerald (17/Hi17.3)
33pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or

Murphy marks the new year with victory at Pattaya C.C.
PSC golf from the Three Sisters Golf Group
![](pictures/s18-Three963.jpg)
Winner Dale Murphy (left) with
runner-up Paul Kraft (right).
Not a large group today, but could not use the weather as
an excuse, it was ideal golfing conditions at the Pattaya Country Club this
January 4th.
A few started off while it was barely light out. The
course was in fairly good condition with some brown spots on a few of the
greens. Coming in to Caddy Shack II with a nice 38 was Dale Murphy while
hopefully waiting at the Shack was Paul Kraft with a 36. Close Paul but no
cigar! Paul seems to be getting his game back, five pars in the back nine.
It was good for second place. In third place with a 35 just one short of
Paul was Don Goins.
Herbie, Jim, and Larry carded 34s and the tumble Herbie
took recently does not seem to have affected his game.
‘Old hands’ to the fore at Bangpra
PSC golf from the Bunker Boys
Monday, January 2,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
A field of 16 golfers set off to Treasure Hill to blow
away the cobwebs following the New Year celebrations. The course has
undergone extensive renovations over the past few months, most of which are
now completed and only one temporary tee was still in operation.
![](pictures/s19-Bunker963.jpg)
Jack Robertson made a return
to the winner’s rostrum following a recent run of bad form.
There was a stiff breeze blowing as we teed off which
only added to the difficulty of what is always one of the harder courses we
play. No one managed to better their handicap on the day, and most agreed
that once again the course came out the winner.
The best performance of the day came from newcomer
Stephen Roche who showed the old hands how to do it. William Macey scored a
creditable 21 points on the back nine (but what happened on the front nine
William?) to take 3rd place on a count back from the
unlucky Reg Smart.
1st Stephen Roche (12) 35pts
2nd Mike Grasser (10) 34pts
3rd William Macey (17) 31pts
Near Pins: Daryl White, Mike Grasser and Colin
Greig (2)
Wednesday, January 4, The
Emerald - Stableford
Twenty-four golfers today for the visit to this ever
popular Bang Chang course, which is excellent value for money following the
recent introduction of the group discount. The course was in fine condition
and relatively quiet for the time of year, the first group finishing their
round comfortably in 4 hours.
There were no outstanding scores on the day with both
flights being won on 36 points. Ex-Bunker champion, John Hughes, had the
best score of the day on his first game since arriving back in Pattaya – we
wonder if he’ll be still on form for next month’s championship, to try and
regain his crown from defending champion Tony Berry.
A Flight
1st John Hughes (16) 36pts
2nd Rab McDonald (12) 34pts
3rd Ken Ellmore (16) 34pts
B Flight
1st Mike Corner (20) 35pts
2nd Tom Jones (25) 34pts
3rd Neil Griffin (28) 33pts
Near Pins: Geoff Hart, Paul Smith, Tom Jones, and
Ken Ellmore
Friday, January 6, Bangpra
– Stableford
The largest field of the week turned out to play at
Bangphra, and the first group headed off 20 minutes earlier than our
allotted tee-time. The course was in excellent condition, but just beginning
to show signs of drying up in places.
Mashi and William shared the best score of the day on 38
points to win the A and B flights respectively. A monitor lizard made an
appearance on the 12th hole, but the star attraction
of the day was William scoring 21 points on the front nine (with 2 “blobs”),
and sinking two outrageously long putts on the treacherous greens.
Mashi continued his run of good form (winning 4 of his
last 5 games) to take the honours in the A flight.
A Flight
1st Mashi Kaneta (12) 38pts
2nd Paul Smith (2) 37pts
3rd Barry Murnin (12) 34pts
B Flight
1st William Macey (17) 38pts
2nd Mike Corner (20) 31pts
3rd Jack Robertson (27) 31pts
Near Pins: Neal Bramley, William Macey, Reg Smart,
and Geoff Parker
Following the recent demise of the Bunker Bar, the Bunker
Boys now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For
more information call Dave on 087 1469978 or email

‘meager’ 38 points.
In the B Flight Kevin Hamilton came out on top

Ted Gardner meanwhile took out the A Flight with a fine
39 points off his 6 handicap to just edge Doug Crowe on another count back,
and Emmet White completed the podium a further point behind.
Doug Crowe, Mark William, Jim McGovern and Brian Orr
shared the ‘2’s pot between them.

Biggest ever field takes
on Eastern Star
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, January 2, Eastern
Star – Stableford
A public holiday today and with the prices hiked up
everywhere the choice was to play Eastern Star. There were three ladies out
and 33 men in three divisions with the cut at 7-15 in division 1, 16-20
division 2 and 21 plus in division 3.
The greens were slightly slower than normal and by our
reckoning they had not been cut for two days.
Back from his African monthly residence, Arthur Hancock
scored 36 points which was the highest of the day to win 1 ahead of Bill
Bertram is second five points behind, and Chris Voller took third place with
a measly 29 points.
Frank Kelly claimed division 2 honours with 34 points
while Rudi Schaefer beat Andy Baber on an 18/13 back-nine count back for
second after they both came in with 33 each.
The French air traffic controller Yves Bosset, now
retired and playing more golf, won division 3 with 34 points, Tony Holehouse
was in second place on 30 and the Manchester boy, David Taylor, took third
with 27.
Yves other half the lovely Pranee took out the ladies
division with 35 points.
Near pins went to Pranee Bossett, Bill Bertram, Alan
Smith, John Smith, Mauri Friman, Rodney Hewitt and Vance Miller.
There were no ‘2’s in any of the divisions today.
Friday, January 6, Eastern
Star – Stableford
This was our largest ever turnout here at Eastern Star
for a normal Friday stableford round since our inauguration at Siam Cats
five years ago. There were 8 ladies in the field and 51 men in three
divisions with four places up for grabs in all divisions.
We had almost perfect conditions here with a cool breeze
intermittent as the round progressed. The equal cut for the stableford was
6-15 in division 1, 16-21 in division 2, and 22 + in division 3.
Having never played to her handicap before, but with 40
points on the day Anothai Van Zeeland won the ladies flight with 40 points.
Pranee Bossett took second with 35 and Jill Stanley recorded her highest
score for a long time, coming in third with 31.
Playing off 8, Bill Bertram posted the highest score of
the day, winning division 1 with 39 points. John Smith was in second with 38
and Barney Sheedey beat Mikael Andersson on a 19/17 back-nine count back
after they both came in with 35 points.
In division 2, after a few weeks in the doldrums, Harry
Riley bounced back by winning with 38 points. Dave Thompson claimed second
with 35, Frank Kelly took third with 34 and in fourth place with 31 points
was Darryl Blair.
Tony Holehouse won division 3 with 37 points, Ian Plummer
was second six points behind and Lee Casey beat the ‘masked bandit’ Paul
Chabot on a 19/17 back-nine count back for third after they both came in
with 30 points.
Near pins were claimed by Pranee Bossett, Verana Beusch,
Anothai Van Zeeland, Bill Bertram (2), Martin Grimoldby, Adi Mayer, Stephen
Keegan, Frank Kelly and Jim Lane.
There were five ‘2’s today, all of them in division 1
from Mikael Andersson, Bill Bertram, Martin Grimoldby, Barnet Sheedy and
Harry Vincenzi.
Our thoughts are still with Kari Aarnio with his ongoing
treatment in Finland; Joe Kubon is now back at home after his successful

Eastern Star – Stableford
Just another day in the life of the Pattaya golfer: Early
in Bert’s, well 8 o’clock or so, some hot coffee and for some brekkers, then
into cars and off we go to play golf. We have to do this day after day and
people think we are enjoying ourselves.
So Eastern Star, a tough test for all the golfers and on
this day we also had a packed course so we would be able to bimble around.
As it happened after nine holes the group in front disappeared so we got
around quickly, but not without having trouble with a tough layout.
It was not too long ago that all the golf courses were
flooded out and the ground soggy and wet, well now with the lack of rain
most places are bone dry and Eastern Star is no different. The fairways were
hard and the rough wiry and difficult and with the wind this made for a
tough round. The greens seemed different, some fast and tricky and some
slower, and of course the greens here have never been the best in the
business.
Round over it was into the showers then a quick bite and
into cars for the drive back to Pattaya. There we got to Tropical Bert’s as
the players were finishing off their ‘golfers specials’ and were enjoying a
cold one. It was soon time to declare the results and find out how tough the
course had been.
In the A Flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Mashi Kaneta
with 33 points on a count back over Walter Bachli in second. In third was
John Hackett with 32 points ahead of Rob Brown in third with 31 points.
In The B Flight we had by far the best score of the day
when Daryl Evans won with 40 points, a good round on a tough day. In second
was Joel Flor with 34 points ahead of Tom Cotton in third with 32 points and
in fourth was Kenny Chung with 31 points on count back over Roy Dayton and
Rita Zoebelli.
It was then time to call an end to a long day and tell
the story of how well we all didn’t play, except Daryl. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Rita Zoebelli, Mike Gaussa (2), John
Marrit
Long Putt: Mike Gaussa, Tom Cotton.

Muay Thai fighters pose with
officials and dignitaries, including Pol. Gen. Boonlert Kaewprasert,
President of International Boxing Association of Thailand, and Ithipol
Kunplume, Mayor of Pattaya City, at the official opening of Pattaya Boxing
World on December 23.
Tuesday, Jan. 3, Rayong
C.C. – Stableford
The commencement of a new year and as it was a Public
Holiday we took advantage of Rayong C.C.’s realistic fee structure. The
course has dried out significantly and despite the best efforts of the
greens staff they could do with the bit of rain that fell during our round.
Having said that, the course is eminently playable and is the same for
everybody on the day.
Ray Spence (H/cap 16) showed he has been needing some
competition to bring out his best, either that or he was showing off in
front of his visitors, Tony & Elaine, posting a strong 40 points, well clear
of second and third placegetters Brian Maddox (20) & Jeff Wylie (8), both
with 33 points but with Brian getting the nod on a 19/15 count back.
Near pins were shared around between Allan, Jeff &
visitor Tony, with one unclaimed and going to the Banglamung Boys Home.
Thursday, Jan. 5, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
Willem Lasonder (20) showed the previous week’s second
place was no fluke, going one better this week at Khao Kheow B & A with 38
points. The course was in good condition, although the greens were
deceptively slow, several players having trouble getting even medium length
downhill putts to the hole. Jeff Wylie (8) filled out today’s prize winners
with a moderate 34 points.
Near Pins were again shared around between Daniel, Jeff &
Jim, with one going to BBH.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call
089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers &
good golfing!

Pattaya City back to winning ways
Bangkok Casuals League Divisions 1 & 2
Paul Frain
Both Pattaya City teams travelled away to Bangkok last
Sunday with the first team looking for revenge over French side Les Gaulois
who beat City in the first match of the season.
Despite the long layoff over the festive season City were
soon in their stride and had a chance early on to open the scoring but with
only the keeper to beat new signing Aleksei Ivanov lobbed the ball over the
keeper and over the bar.
It wasn’t long before Ivanov was in the action again and
after receiving a superb ball from captain Craig Banks he saw his shot
rebound off the post with the French keeper well beaten. At the other end of
the field, a snap shot by the French was well saved by the City keeper and
resulting from that, a good combination of passes by City finally saw Ivanov
finish off the move with his shot beating the French keeper to make it 1-0
to City.
The same player again hit the Les Gaulois woodwork and
the follow up shot was blocked with the ball running for the French.
Riding their luck, Les Gaulois were awarded a free kick
just outside the City area and equalized even though City’s keeper got his
hands to the ball but could not stop it from entering the net which tied the
score at 1-1.
City bounced straight back however and a passing
combination involving four players ended with top scorer earnest Dipita
making it 2-1 to the Pattaya team.
City were now on top and Oleg Vorontsov was unlucky on
two occasions from scoring as the centers were just out of his reach,
however soon after they were awarded a penalty when Tshuma was brought down
by the French keeper and Dipita converted to make the half time score 3-1.
Within five minutes of the restart the French had pulled
a goal back as the City defense was caught square but City made amends when
Craig Banks scored at the other end after intense pressure on the French
goal to make it 4-2.
Les Gaulois fought back and scored again late on but it
was too near the end of the game to worry the City team who ran out deserved
winners 4-3.
The reserves played the in-form and top of the table
Titans and were soon a goal down but could have equalized after a City
player side footed the ball wide with an open goal at his mercy. Titans
continued to pressure the City defense however and had scored three more
before the half time whistle.
After the break City took the game to the Titans but the
defense was welled drilled and chances were few and in the last twenty
minutes Titans scored five more times with City’s Nirut grabbing a late
consolation goal to make the final score 9-1 to the Titans.
Both teams Pattaya teams have fixtures back in Bangkok
this coming weekend.
