Big fish prove elusive once more
Sea fishing with KPK Food Services Ltd
![](pic/s2-Fishing.jpg)
Leif Jansson (right) and Ken
Woolley (left) hold up their prize catches.
Mike Gerrard
Our first trip of the New Year on January 26, and it was
a beautiful day out on the ocean; there was a nice cooling breeze, the sea
was calm and we hoped it was also full of very hungry fish.
When we arrived at the first fishing ground the captain
advised us that the tide was running very fast and it would be better not to
use small rigs to start with and put out only larger rigs and hope the
biggies would hit. Sadly one or two of the passengers were not very
experienced and insisted that they throw in their small rod set ups as well.
After about 20 minute and many tangles the large rigs were pulled in and it
was drifting all day for the smaller species.
Also, unfortunately beyond my control, we did have too
many passengers on board today which compounded some of the problems.
However it was not all doom and gloom: the smaller species were in abundance
and all the passengers caught many fish ranging from 1 pound to 4 pounds in
weight. Very tasty they are too.
Leif Jansson claimed the biggest fish prize of a 500 baht
voucher donated by KPK Food Services Ltd. With a fish of the same species
only one quarter of a pound lighter was Ken Woolley.
The next trips will be limited to 6 passengers maximum
and will be on the 11th and 25th February. If anyone would like to come
along, please call me on 087 091 7565

Gaussa cans an ‘Ace’ as the Scribe comes through
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, January 31, Green
Valley – Stableford
This was the last day of the month and thus the
conclusion of the January ‘MBMG Golfer of the Month’ that promised much as
the Scribe was leading, closely followed by ‘The Browns’, Daryl Evans and
most dangerous lurking in there was Mashi, who always seems to come through
despite all the odds.
![](pic/s7-Bert-1.jpg)
The Scribe (left) receives
the MBMG Golfer of The Month award from Dick Warberg.
We had a full house for this visit to Green Valley and
these days you are straight away onto the most difficult hole, and usually
into a wind. This day was no different, although we did take the easier tee
because some of our players have no chance of getting over the water.
The course proved to be in reasonable condition, despite
what I can only assume has been heavy use of late. Some of the areas were a
bit worn and used and there was evidence of someone using ‘metal spikes’, a
thing we also noticed at Crystal Bay, and something which is banned on all
the courses.
The pace of play was actually quite good considering the
numbers on the course, and in my group two of the danger men were playing
well - Mr. Brown and Mr. Mashi - much too well, as I was just hanging on.
After finishing the first nine we stood to watch the group behind play the
ninth hole, which happens to be a Par 3. Bang, one of the balls went
straight into the hole, and we were watching. Then up came a beaming Mike
Gaussa who told us it was only his second ‘hole in one’. Well done Mike!
![](pic/s7-Bert-2.jpg)
Hole in one man Mike Gaussa.
As our group came to the last, both Mashi, Rob and I were
still in contention, but it is amazing what a bit of pressure does. Rob
didn’t play it well and I was just off the putting surface in two with a
chip and a put to win all. Mashi was 18 inches from the hole in four for a
putt and two points. For the first time in years I double hit my chip and
failed miserably. Mashi, who as most know is just about the safest short
putter in the game, had his putt now to win all - and it lipped out. Now it
was all back in the melting pot and we had to rely on others. We would see.
Back at Bert’s it was late and we had much to do so into
the presentation. In the A Flight, 0-18, the winner was Martin Henneberger
with 36 points. In second was Mashi Kanata with 35 points ahead of Mike
Gaussa on count back with Rob Brown in fourth with 34 points.
In the B Flight the winner was Bernie Cairns with 35
points ahead of Dick Warberg in second, on count back. In third was Les
Charles with 34 points ahead of Rita Zoebelli in fourth with 33 points.
![](pic/s7-Bert-3.jpg)
Tuesday’s winners with one of
Bert’s finest.
Now to the real hero: In the MBMG Golfer of the Month
competition, with all the leaders failing, and Mashi missing an 18 inch
putt, the winner by default and quite amused was your humble correspondent.
Well done me! Incidentally this was not the end and the ‘hole in one’ man
very kindly bought a few beers and Frank fell off his stool. T.T.F.N.

Rita Zoebelli
Long Putts: Frank Pilkington, Kenny Chung

Joel & Clive have a ‘Pleasant’ day
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, Jan. 31,
Plutaluang - Stableford
Firstly to Tuesday, when we had a visit to Plutaluang for
the first time for a while: I don’t know whether we were lucky or what, but
we were able to play the East & South courses without any dramas of
changeovers after 9 holes or delays in tee-offs.
![](pic/s8-Mulligans967.jpg)
Clive Hoseason.
The course was in the best condition I have seen for a
few years, with the greens cut to a reasonable height, which allowed a
decent roll of putts. Jeff Wylie (7) managed his way around the East course
quite well before a few loose shots crept in on the South. He finished with
35 points to lead home Bob Edwards (9) with 33.
Near Pins were secured by Bob, Jeff & Graham, with 1
going to Banglamung Boys Home.
Thursday, Feb. 2, Pleasant
Valley - Stableford
As the headline suggests, Thursday was a trip to Pleasant
Valley - you know, the course that some people love to hate. Invariably I
find the harshest critics are those that have been there and played poorly.
News Flash! It’s not the course!
On this day the competition was played from the white
tees, with some extraordinary scores being the result. Joel Flor (22) won
the day on count back 24/21 from Clive Hoseason (29) after both signed for
an outstanding 43 points. Both Joel and Clive have been struggling with
their games lately, so it was good to see them gain some encouragement with
good scores.
An honourable mention goes to Jimmy Fortune (27) who had
his best game for a long time with 39 points. Our single figure handicappers
played a Skins game from the blue tees as a warm-up for the upcoming PSC
Tournament, with Jeff getting the nod.
Note; Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday
& Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Blackburn & Herridge on top at Treasure Hill
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Monday, January 30,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
There had been overnight rain and the sky was overcast
but as usual we were confident of fine weather and had it not been for yet
another annoying “no show” we would have had a full field of 40 for the
challenging Treasure Hill Golf & Country Club.
Hearty welcomes were handed out to Peter Sindberg from
Denmark, Jacky Wan from Hong Kong & Pierre Zbinden and Noy Phintam from
Nairobi, Kenya.
![](pic/s9-Kronborg967-1.jpg)
Mike Herridge.
We arrived at the course to find the checking in area
quite busy with lots of people arriving at the same time. There was no rush
for us though and after waiting for a couple of groups to tee off we sent
our first group 15 minutes ahead of schedule. Once more the course continues
to improve with lots of work going on and the greens were excellent and at
times very quick. The pace was good and after a drink break on the second
nine we managed to finish our round in four hours & fifteen minutes.
Most found the going tough on the day as there were only
two golfers that managed to play better than their handicap. After slowly
improving over the past few weeks your writer found some good form and
managed to win A Flight with 39 points from Ken (let’s hear it for) Bernek
in second place on 37 points. There were three players on 35 points so after
a count back third place went to Richard Kubicki (20 point back nine) with
Peter Hammond (16 point back nine) fourth and Rob Brown (15 point back nine)
in fifth place.
Another count back for sixth place saw four golfers with
34 points with Niels Hansen (21 point back nine) easing out Takeshi Hakozaki
(19 point back nine), Mike Gosden (15 point back nine) and Leif Kirkgaard
(15 point back nine).
![](pic/s9-Kronborg967-2.jpg)
Ken Bernek & Chris Walsh.
Mike Herridge was victorious in B Flight with 36 points
ahead of Elias Magnusson in second spot with 35 points. Three players on 34
points saw another count back with Bo Cardwell (18 point back nine) taking
third place from Pierre Zbinden (16 point back nine) fourth and Jan Lovgreen
(15 point back nine) in fifth place. Yet one more count back gave Bjarne
Kjaer (17 point back nine) sixth place with veteran Hugh O’Donnell (13 point
back nine) just missing out with his 33 points.
Poor old Dick Braimbridge is still trying to find some of
his form from yesteryear but to his credit is sticking with it although once
more being the recipient of the Compass Cap (the day’s worst score).

Wednesday,February
1,Wangjuntr – Stableford
This was a first time for most of us to the Wangjuntr
complex and today we elected to play the Valley layout. After an overnight
cancellation we were left with a good Wednesday field of 27 golfers and we
welcomed Mike Deverell from London and Mike Gaussa, paying us another visit
from Tropical Berts.
The journey here is a fairly long one and after departing
the Kronny we arrived at Wangjuntr one hour & twenty minutes later. The
weather was great and the course looking ominous for us first timers and we
sent the three-ball away first.
There were many positives to come out of our excursion
and unfortunately a couple of negatives. As stated before, the course was
awesome and in fine condition and although the greens were massive &
undulating they were in terrific condition. On the down side there were no
drinks available on the course and on such a hot day this was somewhat of a
drawback and also many of the caddies were extremely inexperienced; in fact
none of the caddies in our group knew which way to go to the second tee from
the first green. Fortunately a couple of golfers in our group had played the
course before so we eventually got on the right track.
Apart from the lengthy walks from some greens to the next
tees there were no other delays as the course was very quiet but it was
nonetheless a five hour round. Most of the field enjoyed the experience and
look forward to returning and having seen the “lie of the land” are very
confident of much improved efforts.
The difficulty of the course was apparent on the day as
33 points was the best score that any of us could muster. Ken Bernek took
out the A Flight with 32 points, 2 points ahead of Stu Rifkin in second
place. A count back was necessary to determine third & fourth spots with
Mike Gosden (17 point back nine) edging out Mike Deverell (14 point back
nine), both having 29 points. Yours truly (15 point back nine, 9 points last
6, 6 points last 3 holes managed to secure 5th place
in a count back on 28 points from Mike Gaussa (15 point back nine, 9 points
last 6 & 4 points last 3 holes.
The B Flight was won by Chris Walsh with 33 points, with
Bo Cardwell close behind in second place with 32 points. In another count
back on 30 points Bjarne Kjaer (16 point back nine) finished third with
Henry Wong (11 point back nine) in fourth spot. Veteran Kevin Dinan finished
in fifth place with 28 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Ken Bernek (19) 32pts
2nd Stu Rifkin (14) 30pts
3rd Mike Gosden (11) 29pts
4th Mike Deverell (17) 29pts
5th Peter Blackburn (13) 28pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Chris Walsh (22) 33pts
2nd Bo Cardwell (31) 32pts
3rd Bjarne Kjaer (21) 30pts
4th Henry Wong (23) 30pts
5th Kevin Dinan (24) 28pts

18th Leif Kirkgaard
Thursday,February
2,Mountain Shadow – Stableford
Another good field of 34 golfers were signed up to take
on the challenge of one of our favourite courses, Mountain Shadow and we
welcomed Martin Hennerberger from Vancouver, Canada, Terry Pettitt from
Surrey, England & Ing Magnerdsson from Iceland.
We arrived at our destination to find the course
reasonably busy. As has been the policy of late, we sent a couple of
three-balls off first and the first one hit in fine but overcast conditions.
The course was as usual in excellent shape and the greens splendid although
some were a tad slower than normal.
As the skies grew darker and thunder & lightning appeared
it was necessary to take shelter for around 15 minutes just past the half
way mark but the rain soon cleared and we were able to continue without any
further delays. Even with the delay we completed our full round in four
hours and twenty minutes.
A couple of 42 point rounds meant a count back was
necessary to determine the winner of A Flight and Tricky Dicky Kubicki (23
point back nine) emerged victorious, with Rob Brown (20 point back nine)
taking second spot. Peter Sindberg finished third with 40 points ahead of
veteran Don Richardson in fourth place on 39 points. In a count back for
fifth & sixth places yours truly (17 point back nine) edged out Leif
Kirkgaard (16 point back nine), both having 34 points.
There is just no stopping eight and a half month pregnant
Bo Cardwell who had a great 41 points and won the B Flight from Kjeld Ravn
with 39 points. Bo reckons that this will be her last win for a while but
only because the arrival of the baby is imminent and we all wish her well
for that. In third place was Elias Magnusson with 37 points and in a count
back for fourth & fifth the consistent winner of the fashion award Bjarne
Kjaer (20 point back nine) finished ahead of Peter Hammond (18 point back
nine), both on 36 points. Yet another count back was necessary to determine
sixth place and Noy Phintham (20 point back nine) prevailed over Ulla Ravn
(14 point back nine) both with 34 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Richard Kubicki (14) 42pts
2nd Rob Brown (8) 42pts
3rd Peter Sindberg (14) 40pts
4th Don Richardson (13) 39pts
5th Peter Blackburn (13) 34pts
6th Leif Kirkgaard (19) 34pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Bo Cardwell (31) 41pts
2nd Kjeld Ravn (21 39pts
3rd Elias Magnusson (23) 37pts
4th Bjarne Kjaer (21) 36pts
5th Peter Hammond (20) 36pts
6th Noy Phintham (20) 34pts
Near Pins: 5th Pekka
Mustonen; 8th Noy Phintham; 15th
Peter Sindberg; 17th Richard Kubicki
Long Putts: 9th Eddie
Glinsek; 18th Pekka Mustonen
The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was awarded to Eddie
(The Eagle) Glinsek and Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who once more collected
many donations to charity from the ever generous Kronny crew.

High scores abound at Captain’s birthday bash
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pic/s10-Outback967.jpg)
Joe Mooneyham (right), Div B
on Friday, chats with Ed Turner, one of the many visitors to the Outback.
Monday, Jan. 30, Burapha A
& B- Stableford
Well it was the Capt’s actual birthday today so it was to
be a special day out for him; playing with Lumpy Russell is always a bit of
fun but with 1ฝ bottles of Sang Som it is a real pleasure: Irish coffees all
around for 18 holes and what a mess he was in at the finish as the party
carried on into the night!
We had an excellent turnout with some 38 players on the A
& B nines from the blues providing some great scores, helped a little maybe
by the winter rule (lift clean and place on fairway only), as no carts were
permitted on the fairways. They must have had a lot of rain as there were
wet patches everywhere. We didn’t get rained on but before we started it
certainly looked as though it was coming.
The greens were in great condition but my mate Lumpy
couldn’t seem to get the ball to the hole; must have been something to do
with him playing Siam Old Course most of the time and their greens are like
lightening.
So we had three divisions with Cottee securing the day’s
top score of a remarkable 43pts to win Div B from the Roscoman on 38 and
Bernie Stafford (sausage) back in third on 37. Div A also did well with two
guys breaking 40pts; Mitch Black who won with 42 (a great round of golf, 71
gross) ahead of another great round from Paulie with 41. Div C weren’t to be
left out as John Player shot his best round this trip (40pts) to take the
honours ahead of four players all tied on 35pts.
There were eleven ‘2’s from Paul Avery, Mark McDonald
(2), Paulie O’Mahony, Bob Philp, Bernie Stafford, Terry Stielow, Ed Turner,
Rosco Langoulant, Keith Meehan & Jerry Quin.
Div A (0-14)
1st Mitch Black (5/Hi3.7) 42pts
2nd Paulie O’Mahony (11/Hi8.1)
41pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (14/Hi11.1)
35pts
Div B (15-21)
1st Wayne Cotterell (16/Hi12.8)
43pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (15/Hi12)
38pts
3rd Bernie Stafford (16/Hi13) 37pts
Div C (22+)
1st John Player (25/Hi20.6) 40pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (25/Hi20.6) 35pts
3rd John White (28/Hi23) 35pts
Monday. Jan. 30, Khao
Kheow B & A – Stableford
What started out to be 6 four-balls changed a little as
three called in sick in the morning leaving 21 players in two divisions. B
and A was the order of play and we were away early. Here (Khao Kheow) had
also suffered heavy rain the day before and like Burapha, the carts were
restricted to the paths and winter rules (lift clean & place on fairways
only) were in place.
The course was in excellent nick with superb greens and
no “real golfer” should miss this tough test of golf, with the Outback
enjoying some excellent rates for green fees and carts.
Chris Thompson had a up and down sort of round leaving
probably one of his most memorable shots to the par 5, 8th
hole on A, where he pulled his third shot hard left and it would have
certainly gone OB; instead it slammed into the top of a coconut tree,
dropping two coconuts to the ground in the process, much to everybody’s
amusement. He still managed to finish with 32pts, earning himself a podium
place in Div B.
The two Grahams did the business; Johnson in Div A with
38pts and Woollett in Div B, also with 38, both with comfortable wins over
the remainder of the field.
A couple of welcome backs to Barry Welling and Patrick
Engles and also Pierre Cere, having his first game with the Outback.
There were two ‘2’s; Owen Walkley and Graham Woollett.
Div A (0-16)
1st Graham Johnson (8/Hi7.4) 38pts
2nd Barry Welling (5) 35pts
3rd Owen Walkley (11/Hi10.2) 35pts
Div B (17+)
1st Graham Woollett (26/Hi23.7)
38pts
2nd Barry McIntosh (22/Hi20.1)
33pts
3rd Chris Thompson (25/Hi23.2)
32pts
Tuesday, Jan. 31, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
Standing in for the recovering ‘Chad’ was Nigel Cannon,
who organised the 15 Outbackers who decided to enjoy their last game of the
month at the local Pattaya Country Club.
There were a few new ‘Tuesday’ faces today – Roy and Paul
Studds from the UK, Barry Ennis from Canada and local lad, Geoff Couch.
The course was recovering from some recent heavy rain and
whilst carts were allowed on the course (using the 90 deg rule) there were a
number of bunkers which still held water. We were away on time for rounds of
around 4 hours or so.
With 15 players it was 1–4 plus ‘2’s.
Showing the ‘boys’ what she knows about the course was
PCC caddy Noy Kamsantia (23) with best of the day 39 and just a shot back
was Tom Murray (8) with 38.
Both Barry Ennis (15) and Roy Studds (36) came in with 35
points with Barry getting the nod on count back.
There were three ‘2’s from Noy Kamsantia, Paul Studds and
Tom Murray.
1st Noy Kamsantia (23/Hi22.2) 39pts
2nd Tom Murray (8/Hi9.3) 38pts
3rd Barry Ennis (15/Hi16) 35pts
4th Roy Studds (36) 35pts
Wednesday, Feb. 1,
Plutaluang – Stableford
It’s about two years ago when the Outback last came here
and a surprise turnout of 38 players fully justified the visit: great value
for money but you just have to accept that it might be a slow round,
depending who’s in town, and it was. The course was in good all round
condition but even so it’s hard to remember how hard you have to hit the
ball against the grain and uphill and how careful when going in the opposite
direction.
North & West were the nines to be played and the General
had been down the day before to confirm the tee times and collect a
scorecard so he could set up the course on the handicap system. After the
slope (143) and rating (72.6) the resulting starting handicaps looked more
like something we played to when we first took up golf. A nine handicapper
was playing off 12, the General off 21 (up 5) and a 28 handicapper off 36!
Anybody with a Handicap Index of more than 28 were maxed out at 36 otherwise
they would have been off the planet!
Many thought the system had gone mad and one player chose
not accept his additional shots and declined to play in the competition as a
result but what we were seeing is what happens behind the scenes of the PSC
administered USGA.
When the results came in, they were not as ridiculous as
one might have thought, with only two in each of Div A & Div B playing to
handicap or better, and three in Div C! The Outback’s opinion is the rating
is about right for a course of this length off the whites but the slope is a
little steep, perhaps more around 133 would be nearer the mark.
Capt’ Bob came down to help with the input of scores only
to find out that something wasn’t quite right with their input and it wasn’t
him! The pro shop had given Jack an old scorecard by mistake and all the
hole indices were totally different compared to the cards used on the day;
fortunately the problem was easily solved and did not require all the cards
to be re-entered.
Top scorer was Tony McDonough with 41pts, winning Div B
from Sel Wegner on 39. Suzi, playing off 26, won Div C with 40 and Paul
Bourke (38) and Eddie Smith (37) filled the top two places in Div A. General
Jack, who came third in Div C with 36 said after, “I can’t remember when I
last got two shots on a hole!”
Today was also another in our eight event series of the
Kirwan Asia sponsored ‘Hidden Pairs’ with an added 1,000 baht up for grabs,
the winners being Sel Wegner & Kissy Buchanan with a massive 49pts, a total
which is going to be hard to beat and will surely win them the added 2,000
baht bonus.
There were four ‘2’s from Mark McDonald, Jack Moseley,
Barry Ennis and Tony McDonough.
Div A (0-14)
1st Paul Bourke (12/Hi8.7) 38pts
2nd Eddie Smith (14/Hi10.2) 37pts
3rd Mark McDonald (3/Hi2) 33pts
Div B (15-20)
1st Tony McDonough (19/Hi14.9)
41pts
2nd Sel Wegner (18/Hi13.8) 39pts
3rd Buchanan Keith (15/Hi11.1)
35pts
Div C (21+)
1st Suzi Lawton (26/Hi19.8) 40pts
2nd Barry Ennis (21/Hi16) 37pts
3rd Jack Moseley (21/Hi16.2) 36pts
Thursday, Feb. 2, The
Emerald – Stableford
Poor scoring amongst the 15 Outbackers at Emerald led to
the course rating going up by three shots and even after that only one
person managed to match handicap. Doug Douglas scored 33pts to win Div B by
three from Roger Pearn (30) and Chris Thompson (27). We had two divisions,
despite the small field, as no one could muster a ‘2’, so Div A went to Neil
Lavery with a mere 32pts, beating the Capt’ on count back.
In the Kirwan Asai sponsored hidden pairs, Neil teamed
with two players because of the odd number of starters; on the one hand his
score was paired with Jack Piercefield for 37pts, and on the other he was
with Paul Sharples, who had quite literally just flown in from the UK this
morning. They managed to equal the better ball score of 42pts also achieved
by Capt’ Bob & Roger Pearn for a tie.
Div A (0-19)
1st Neil Lavery (12/Hi12.5) 32pts
2nd Bob Philp (11/Hi11.2) 32pts
3rd Ed Turner (15/Hi14.7) 31pts
Div B (20+)
4th Doug Douglas (23/Hi22) 33pts
5th Roger Pearn (22/Hi21.1) 30pts
6th Chris Thompson (25/Hi23.2)
27pts
Friday, Feb. 3,Green
Valley – Stableford
With the golfing season now at a high, more and more
people are packing on to the courses resulting in us being exasperated by a
shortage of caddies here at Green Valley on Friday. All courses are
experiencing high demand, so please sign up as early as possible at the
Outback to play at any venue to avoid disappointment because it is proving
very hard to get extra tee times and the start lists will have to close
early.
The 45 Outbackers did get away eventually but it was a
tough start for many, some guys trying to go off without caddies and having
to let them catch up as they became available, as it seemed some 200 Koreans
had exhausted the normal supply.
As for the golf, Jack Butler and Joe Mooneyham shared the
top score (38pts) to win their respective divisions, with newcomer to the
Outback, Toni Buerli taking Div C with 37.
There were five ‘2’s; two on hole 9 from Jack Butler &
Mike Davidson, two on hole 12 from Ian Heddle & Mark McDonald and Ken
Williams got one on the 16th .

1st Barry Tregurtha (18) 68
2nd Dale Shier (12) 68
3rd Mark Reid (8) 70
4th Bob Newell (8) 71
Barry the Book (he’s an avid reader they tell me) had one
hell of a day last Monday and walked off the 18th at
Green Valley with a big 41 circled at the top of his scorecard. Mr.
Tregurtha has been in fine form of late and whilst he was not the bookies’
favourite, he was no dark horse either. Tregurtha’s recent captaincy at the
Mulberry Ryder Cup at Soi Dao a few weeks back provided ample practice to
fine tune his game.
![](pic/s11-Golf%20Club-2.jpg)
Barry Tregurtha.
Dale Shier- a rigs to riches story himself- also had a
fine 68 but lost on the dreaded count back. Mark Reid turned in his 70 for
third spot on the podium for the January Monthly Medal. But Barry, what
colour shirt mate?
Our thanks go out once again, and probably not for the
last time, to Bob Newell for his latest last stint at running the golf for
us. Bob will be moving into his new luxury Jomtien beach condo soon, but
hopefully he will run the golf roster for the Wednesday outings. Cheers
mate, remember… black is the new brown!

Right now, Greenwood might possible be in the best shape
it has ever been. It is also the best deal in town so you really should try
this course for a great day out.
We had 82 golfers out there today for the 4th
monthly comp with our pals at Lewiinski’s. The consensus was that this
should be a regular fixture for our monthly competitions and so the other
venue will change as required, but Greenwood will be played on either the
Wednesday or the Friday for the near future.
Congrats to Ed Wycoff (in great form these days), Paul
Robinson and David Dunne who all won their flights with scores better than
their handicaps. Also a special mention to Kalle Jaskata from Finland who
was visiting us for the first time and a great addition to the players of
The Golf Club. Kalle came in with a 35 handicap proving you do not have to
be a low handicapper to have fun and play by the rules, just a positive
attitude and a smile is all we ask! Thanks again Kalle, great to meet you
and have a good trip back mate.

Another fine day of golf lay ahead of us as we headed out
for our 10:00 tee time at Crystal Bay. The A & C courses were the test of
the day on this, the second day of competition between Lewiinski’s and The
Golf Club.
The course was in beautiful shape once again and the
greens rolled quick and true. As the cards were coming in there was much
mumbling and grumbling about scores and great speculation of the possible
winners.
After the round, we all headed back to The Golf Club for
a great spread of food and the famous B-B-Q which is all part of the
tournament . Dale Shier did a fine presentation to the days’ winners and
proceeded to show everyone the finer details of how to properly consume
alcoholic beverages.
It all came down to the draw and the format for this is
that we pick 10 random scorecards from the Lewiinski’s players and 10 from
The Golf Club, add them up and the most points wins. As it turned out, The
Golf Club were the winners for the second month in a row as their 10 golfers
totaled 341 points and averaged 34.1 points and Lewiinski’s had a total of
295 for a 29.5 points average. Well played lads!
The story of the week though was Steve Weller, our good
buddy from Vancouver way who is out on an extended visit from the cold.
Stevie shot 35 on Wednesday and a 41 today for his Crystal Goblet at Crystal
Bay victory. A great result from the 8 handicapper.
We must give thanks to Peter Hynard for herding cats for
the comp and we will be seeing more of Peter on Mondays and Fridays. Come
out and join us for next months’ comp!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a fun day out. For more

JJ shines at Eastern Star
Backyard Golf Society
Change of venue this week for the Backyard Golf Society as
Emerald was fully book so we wandered down the road to Eastern Star Golf
Course. Needless to say it was extremely busy but luckily we managed to
tee off just before Jomtien Golf and even though it took us nearly 5
hours to get around it was nice for everyone to play on the course
before the match-play event next month.![](pic/s12-Backyard967.jpg)
JJ (right) celebrates his winning golf day
outside Moonshine Bar.
Seven players took part in all competitions today
with JJ cleaning up in most of them. He won the stableford competition
with 37 points and proceeded to take nearest the pin prize and 11 skins
to complete a very successful day out. Other skin winners are as
follows: Kit (1), Mike (1), Neville (1), Dan M (1) and 2 rollovers.
Finally we wish Bob G all the best for his trip back
to the UK and look forward to seeing him in the various bars again at
the end of May.

Kevin Worl (left) with Jim

The Pattaya Country Club may have an inside track with
the weather gods. This 1st of February found cracks in the overcast showing
that there was, in fact, a sun back there. Good overcast until around the
14th hole when the sun appeared in all its glory. A good turn out with 17
players teeing off beginning at 6:30 AM.
The course was in good shape, fairways nicely mowed and
greens-green. Back at Caddy Shack II the scores were tallied and coming in
first was Kevin Worl with 41 points. Jim (free drop) Hern came in with 37
for second and Larry Emerson and Vance Millar followed with 36 and 35
respectively. Herbie furnished the usual snacks along with sliced ham and
sausage links.

CSS 72
Division 1 (0–12)
1st Warren Gallop (11) 68
2nd Ted Lodge (11) 68
3rd Alan Pilkington (9) 70
4th Rainer Helling (8) 71
Division 2 (13+)
1st Tim Knight (23) 42ps
2nd Larry Slattery (17) 40pts
3rd Bryan Priestley (19) 39pts
4th Gordon Everingham (25) 39pts
Ladies
1st Theresa Connolly (25) 36pts
2nd Toni Nichols (23) 26pts
‘2’s: Alan Pilkington, Noel Reynolds, Brian Kelly,
William Chang.
A pleasant day started out under cloudy skies with the
threat of rain that fortunately never materialized until everyone was on
their way home. All who played today enjoyed a very good day’s golf over a
fairly amenable course which covered the C and A nines.
As usual there were two divisions for the gentlemen cut
at 12 and below for the first division and 13 and above for the second and
one for the ladies.
The scoring as expected on an open course was good in the
first division although just five players managed to better par with the
medal eventually going to Warren Gallop, after he won a count back over Ted
Lodge with a better score of 32.5 to 35 over the C course.
Alan Pilkington took third two shots worse than them with
Rainer Helling snaring fourth after a count back which he won with a better
32 to consign Rick Schramm to 5th as he could only
garner 35 over the inward nine.
All the count backs for the day were taken as usual from
the last nine played on the card, rather than the order in which they might
have been played. This saw Rainer sneaking into fourth after he had actually
had a quadruple 9 on the ninth on A, his last hole, when a par would have
earned him the medal for the month following the best outward nine of the
day at gross level par.
The second division was a slam bang affair with the top
contenders all shooting well below their handicaps, with Tim Knight, the
Medal winner, coming home in six under - a feat that when other rounds were
taken into account meant a four shot reduction in handicap for the near
future.
Larry Slattery was just two behind him after returning
his equal best round ever in Thailand to take second spot, with Brian
Priestly just getting the edge over Gordon Everingham after winning a count
back by a margin of 20 to 18.
The ladies division was won by Theresa Connolly with a
level handicap round to leave Toni Nichols in second and Brita Metzger in
third both some way behind.
Following the golf almost everyone returned to the
Rabbi’s Elephant where after a very good buffet laid on by the Pattaya Golf
Society and the Rabbi, Len Jones and Jeff Cohen presented the prizes as
Russell Exley emceed proceedings. Prior to the presentations Len Jones
thanked all those that had made the day such a success starting with the
IPGC venue golf organizers for promotion and Glyn Evans for registration,
Stephen Beard for scoring, and Russell Exley for setting everything in
motion and organisation in general.
As usual following the presentations a draw was held for the non prize
winners for over 25 items from the IPGC merchandise stock.

‘Doc’ finds the right medicine
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, Jan. 30,Mt. Shadow
-Rainbow Medal
1st Mike Dabanovich & Stephen Beard
(12.8) 59.2
2nd Rodney Hayes & Don Everett
(13.2) 59.8
3rd Brian Lewis & Sekio Ojima
(18.4) 60.6
4th Paul & Martin Hartley (17.2)
60.8
5th John Oswald & Alwyne Burley
(11.2) 61.8
6th John Batty & Mike Korney (10.8)
62.2
The format for the day was a rainbow 2 person scramble
with each player having to take at least six tee shots and the card
requiring six tee shots to be made from each of the red, white and blue
tees, with a handicap allowance of 40% of the combined to establish an exact
number handicap to be deducted from a stroke play score.
![](pic/s15-Haven.jpg)
Mike Dabanovich.
Following an extremely long time in the wilderness,
Stephen Beard at last found a partner strong enough and with sufficient
stamina to carry him to victory in a pairs competition, as Mike Dabanovich
found a way to keep the round moving with some prodigious drives, which on
some holes required just a chip on to the green. Unfortunately neither
player’s putting form was in very good shape, but even finishing with a
bogey on the last they still managed to return a level par round that was
just enough to secure the victory by the slimmest of margins from Rodney
Hayes and Don Everett, with Rodney also relying on Don’s long game to put
them in contention until the last hole which they also bogeyed to take
second place.
That old sometime Shadow, Brian Lewis, teamed up with
in-form Sekio Ojima, who he last saw in the audience when playing with the
Shadows in Japan on their far east tour in ’94 and met up with again at an
apr่s golf soiree in the Haven, combined well to take third place just a
hair’s breadth ahead of the father and son duo of Paul and Martin Hartley,
who relied on dad’s big hitting and son’s deft touches around the greens.
New member John Oswald was thrown in the deep end as he
teamed up with Alwyne Burley but fortunately, with both speaking roughly the
same language and agreeing that England can’t play cricket, it worked out
well enough to take fifth ahead of the inspired team selection of Jon Batty
and Mike Korney, who with a lot more luck would have finished a little
higher in the pecking order.
At the end of a very enjoyable day when there was almost
no pressure to perform, the consensus was that more of this type of golf
should be organised in the future, which will surely be the case.
The 2’s were suspended for the day due to the format.
Prior to the prize giving there were welcomes for Juhani
Falt, Jari Kaartinen and John Oswald.
Friday, Feb. 3, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Sekio Ojima (25) 41pts
2nd Alwyne Burley (17) 37pts
3rd Rodney Hayes (12) 36pts
4th Paul Hartley (19) 35pts
5th Yasuo Suzuki (11) 35pts
After the very relaxing day out on Monday and the strains
and stresses of the IPGC Monthly Medals on Wednesday, it was back to the
usual Stableford competition to be played at the nearest course, the very
local Pattaya Country Club.
Sekio Ojima had a day to remember, no doubt having learnt
a lot during his round on Monday, firing his best ever round at 5 under
handicap which proved to be sufficient to split the rest of the field apart
and take the top spot on the podium by four clear points. His round could
have been so much better as the inward half was completed in a gross 44 that
included two quadruple bogeys.
Following the presentation of the prizes and his blowing
of the horn, Sekio had a very nice speech prepared and fortunately when
recounting his day’s round, he started at the eighteenth so it was almost
over when the drinks were finished.
Alwyne Burley, playing the day with his fourteenth
different set of golf clubs since arriving in Thailand and grateful that he
did not leap at the chance to buy any of the previous sets, seems to have
found at least one or two of them in this set to suit his game, at least for
the time being, as he staked his claim to second place ahead of Manley club
mate Rodney Hayes, who is also showing signs of a return to his old form
with a level handicap round.
Paul Hartley won a count back over Yasuo Suzuki with a
better 23 to 19, which also could have been an exceptional nine as he
collected a zero pointer on the last, to take fourth spot.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but
Hal Hart scored one in the second division to collect a much smaller pot
after David Bowles had cleaned out a multi roll over on the previous Friday.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Yasuo
Suzuki together with a special welcome back for Shuichi Kodaka, now well on
the mend following his tangle with a 1200cc motor bike. Shuichi is expecting
to be back on the courses in the near future now that he has shed the
crutches.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group you
can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi
13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday,
Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of
courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Jesters support Special Olympics Thailand
Bernie Tuppin
The Special Olympics is an international organization
that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion
between people with and without intellectual disabilities. Through
year-round sports training, athletic competition and other related programs,
the Special Olympics have created a model community that celebrates diverse
gifts for almost 2.5 million children and adults in more than 170 countries.
![](pic/s16-S-Olympics-1.png)
Founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the Special
Olympics provide opportunities for people with restricted capabilities to
realize their potentials, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and
experience joy and friendship.
In Thailand, there are 33 annual events held in 4 regions
with the venues changing each year, except for Pattaya, which hosts an
annual event. Jesters Care for Kids has been proud to have been a part of
this for the past three years, donating B250,000 during that period. This
year the competition was held at School No 7 and attracted 202 special
athletes from nine districts surrounding Pattaya.
Locally there were children and young adults from
Sattahip, Rayong and Chonburi, including the Guranyawet Disabled Ladies,
Special School No 7 and Khao Bai Sri Special Education. From further away,
there were also teams from Chachengsao, Samut Prakhan and Trat.
![](pic/s16-S-Olympics-2.jpg)
Event winners show off their
medals.
The disciplines contested were futsal, bocce ball and
field and track, which also included shot put. What is commendable is the
work of the volunteers necessary to stage the event with 90 coaches, carers
and monitors who give of their time freely.
Last year this process identified 32 special needs
athletes to represent Thailand at the World Special Olympics held in Athens,
where they competed successfully to win 9 gold medals. That our contribution
in some small way enabled these children to have that experience makes it
even more worthwhile.
It is doubtful whether the two days uncovered any
prospective Olympians (although one boy from Chachongsao looked very
speedy), but, nevertheless, the spirit of competition and the joy of
participating was evident. A fist pump from a small autistic girl finishing
last said it all!
The proceedings passed with only one small incident when
a boy collapsed from heat exhaustion midway through the 200 metre race; he
was soon revived and will suffer no lasting harm.
Fortunately, the last event was just completed before a
severe storm hit; but I doubt that it dampened the spirits of these special
children. As for results, well there were no losers; only winners,
especially those of us privileged to witness the spectacle.
If you would like to help special children like these,
please visit us at www. care4kids.info and/or www. facebook.com/jesterscare.

Hilton Pattaya team enjoy success at Columbia Trail Masters 2012
![](pic/s17-Hilton.jpg)
The team members of Hilton
Pattaya led by Harald Feurstein, General Manager (far right, standing row)
recently completed the “Columbia Trail Masters 2012”, the first Thailand
trail running championship at Khao Mai Kheow, Pattaya. The Hilton Pattaya
team also won the 3rd and 2nd runner-up trophies for the marathon
discipline. The winners were Chonticha Satprasit, Assistant Spa Manager (1st
from right, sitting row) and Phungporn Wingpad, Kid’s Club Attendant (1st
from left, sitting row). Congratulations to the medal winners and all who
took part.
Young racer Stuvik tests Formula 3 at Sepang Circuit
![](pic/s18-Stuvik-1.jpg)
Sandy Stuvik with his Formula
3 car.
Local racing prodigy Sandy Stuvik tested for the first
time in a Formula 3 car at the end of last month at the Sepang F1 Circuit in
Malaysia. The car was an F304 car, which last raced in the Asian F3
Championship in 2008. The testing is a vital step up for Sandy, as he
prepares himself to compete against the best racers in the world.
He started the 2012 season with testing various touring
cars in Thailand and following on from the Sepang F3 test, will be doing a
series of tests in Europe with Formula 3, Formula Renault and hopefully GP3,
in the build up to the Formula Renault season starting in April, where he
will race in the Formula Renault NEC series.
![](pic/s18-Stuvik-2.jpg)
Test driving at the Sepang F1
Circuit in Malaysia.
Sandy is working hard to improve his physical and mental
strengths, which are just as vital as in-car preparations at this level. The
high altitude training camp he did in Austria in December has set the tone
for a very rigorous and demanding training program, which has to be juggled
between other racing activities, promotions and school. The coming season
will indeed be demanding for the 16 year old Thai driver, but he remains
fully committed to his racing ambitions.
At Sepang, Sandy started out with getting a feel for the
F3 car and had a very good test program with his old racing coach, Philippe
Descombes. It was considerably more physical to drive the F3 than any
previous car he has driven and in Malaysia’s notoriously hot and humid
conditions he had 2 tough days of testing. The track was both wet and dry,
so Sepang offered a good variety of different racing scenarios.
Sandy was very pleased with his first F3 outing and looks
forward to getting back into the car in Europe within the next few weeks.

Batty back on song
IPGC golf from The Links
![](pic/s19-Links967.jpg)
Jon Batty and Joe Peters.
Sunday, January 29,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
The largest turnout of the year for the increasingly
popular Pattaya Country Club led to a slightly hectic start as the course
initially didn’t have enough caddies and carts to satisfy the demand.
However this was soon rectified by the ever efficient staff, and we managed
to get off the tee slightly earlier than our allotted time, although the
pace of play was a little slow throughout.
The large field was split into 3 flights, with the cuts
coming at 0-14, 15-21 and 22+.
In the A flight, JJ Harney, playing off single figures
for the first time, made light work of his new handicap, his 38 points good
enough for third place, missing out on a 21/20 count back to Jon Batty,
playing off the same handicap and finally back playing the kind of golf we
all know he is capable of. However, this was not enough as Teddy Lodge took
the spoils, shooting the same 79 gross score for 40 points off his 11
handicap.
In the B flight, Andy Galvin narrowly missed out on a
place, losing the count back to Cliff North after both players posted the
regulation 36 points. Frank McGowan was second with 39 points, behind Noel
Reynolds whose 41 points were highest score of all the divisions, and should
ensure a sufficient cut to qualify for the A flight now, for quite some
time.
In the C flight, Roar Berger won for the second week
running, scoring 37 points, ahead of Toni Nichols and Rod Howett, with 34
and 32 respectively.
With such a large field, it was inevitable there would be
a number of two’s, with JJ Harney (2), Frank McGowan (2), Teddy Lodge, Andy
Galvin and Noel Reynolds sharing the pot.
A Flight
1st Teddy Lodge (11) 40pts
2nd Jon Batty (9) 38pts
3rd JJ Harney (9) 38pts
B Flight
1st Noel Reynolds (15) 41pts
2nd Frank McGowan (16) 39pts
3rd Cliff North (21) 36pts
C Flight
1st Roar Berger (27) 37pts
2nd Toni Nichols (23) 34pts
3rd Rod Howett (24) 32pts
Tuesday, Jan 31, Green
Valley – Stableford
26 players made the trip to the old favourite, Green
Valley, our first visit since we changed our regular Sunday venue. This is
always an enjoyable course to play, and as usual was in excellent condition,
with the greens much improved from the last time we visited.
In the A flight, Joe Peters, despite being cut 3 shots
last week, took the honours with 37 points on a course he always seems to
play well. Joe McArdle, ably aided as ever by his regular caddy, Som, was
second with 35 points, 3 ahead of Jon Batty in third.
Sekio Ojima topped the B flight in his final week in
Thailand; the always smiling Japanese belying his age to shoot 35 points.
His generosity back in the Links afterwards was much appreciated by his
playing partners, myself included! Theresa Connolly was second, one point
behind, with Frank McGowan back in third.
Frank also followed on from his brace of ‘2’s on Sunday,
clearing the pot with the only ‘2’ of the day.
A Flight
1st Joe Peters (15) 37pts
2nd Joe McArdle (12) 35pts
3rd Jon Batty (9) 32pts
B Flight
1st Sekio Ojima (24) 35pts
2nd Theresa Connolly (25) 34 pts
3rd Frank McGowan (17) 31pts
Thursday, Feb 2, Greenwood
– Stableford
A few late cancellations, coupled with most regulars
playing in the previous day’s IPGC medal, meant a much reduced field took
the minibus up the 331 to Greenwood. With only 11 of us, we were unable to
take advantage of the full IPGC discount, but at 1,100 baht including caddy,
this course is still well worth the money.
We tackled the A&C courses, the most difficult
combination at Greenwood, and with the subtly sloping greens measuring 9.5
on the stimp and the rough thick and lush, points were hard to come by, for
most.
Three players tied on 31 points, Bill Wilkinson just
missing out on a place, his 15 point back 9 falling just short of Sekio
Ojima (16) and JJ Harney 17. Your author, however, continued his recent run
of form and produced his best golf in Thailand so far, coming home 8 points
clear, a score that will no doubt come to the attention of the handicapper
this coming weekend.
There were no ‘2’s on the tricky par 3’s, so the pot was
rolled over to Sunday.
1st Jon Batty (9) 39pts
2nd JJ Harney (9) 31pts
3rd Seki Ojima (24) 31pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi
Buakhao at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10.00am for Pattaya Country
Club every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A
full schedule of courses can be found on the IPGC website www.ipgc.org.

Sumptuous stuff from Sumner
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Plutaluang on
Monday, 30th January, to play a stableford competition on the West and North
nines, which were in fine condition. This combination is a little long at
6,700 yards and certainly testing and a twenty minute timeout for rain after
six holes certainly added to the challenge.
The field was divided into two flights at fifteen and
under and in the second flight Gary Bolger entered a score of 31 points for
third place, whilst Henry Mah and Vic Barton shared the win with scores of
32 points.
In the top flight Steve Jones used this, his final round
this trip, to show he has not lost it after a dismal run of scores and he
produced an excellent card of 36 points for third place. In second was Rick
Schramm with 39 points to show everyone that his recovery from bronchitis is
well on track. The flight winner was Pete Sumner with an excellent gross 76
giving him 40 points in a round he will savour for a while yet with eleven
pars and three birdies making a mockery of the course and the damp
conditions.
There were birdie ‘2’s on the Lighthouse hole for Steve
Jones, Dave Moriarty, Gary Bolger and Kevin McConnell whilst Rick Schramm
birdied the two par threes on the front nine to complete the pot.
The Booby Bevy went to Mike and Yvonne Earley for dashing
away on Friday before it could be awarded, leaving Mr Len, bronchitic and
weary, to finish both bottles of a beer he dislikes. Bah!! What goes around,
comes around at the PGS obviously. The day had been well marshalled by Tony
Thorne and the plaudits were all for Pete Sumner after a sumptuous round of
golf.
Late burst gives Earley
win
On Friday, 3rd February, the Pattaya Golf Society visited
Mountain Shadow to play a stableford competition on the testing course which
demands accuracy rather than length off the blue tees. The course was in
splendid condition with good running fairways and the huge greens receptive
and true.
Visits and visa runs had reduced the field to one flight
for the day and in third place was Rick Schramm finishing his excellent week
with 34 points. In second was Dave Moriarty with 36 points but the “Giants”
fan could be excused if his mind was elsewhere this weekend. The winner was
Mike Earley whose round was steady, if not spectacular, until the final four
holes when he finished with ten points to shoulder his way into top place.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Will Bean, Dave Moriarty, Joe
Niisato, Larry Slattery and Martin Hennessy (two) and the Booby Bevy went to
Rob Alexander on his first visit to Pattaya and its golf. Harsh lessons lie
ahead but his first lesson was that a change of clothes is essential after
golf!

Yui dishes it out
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, January 29, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Yui Bietry (9) 42pts
2nd Ian Grout (9) 37pts
3rd Jan Erikssen (11) 36pts
B Flight
1st Jez Lees (17) 40pts
2nd Mark Bonner (16) 40pts
3rd Jerry McCarthy (15) 38pts
Near Pins: No 4 Pierre Bietry, No 9 Pat Regan, No
12 Ian Halfpenny, No 16 Yui Bietry
Yui Bietry lit up A Flight and the day with her superb 42
points and near pin on No. 16. Yui’s score was 5 strokes clear of the
‘Shrewsbury Mauler’ Ian Grout who has just returned for a brief holiday. Jan
Erikssen and Vic the ‘inflictor’ Hester locked it up with a level to
handicap 36 points apiece. A count back put the remaining flight loot in
Jan’s back pocket as Vic was left satang-less at sea level.
The trend of the higher handicappers having a better day
on the Sunday shortened Pete Thompson design continued as Mark ‘Mussels’
Bonner posted a fine 40 point effort to better good pal Jez ‘the Principal’
Lees by one shot or so he thought all the way to the presentation. Back at
Lewiinski’s it was discovered that Jez had played off a wrong handicap i.e.
16 instead of 17 and the resulting count back gave Jez the top spot and
Mussels the silver. Mussels’ reply to this is unprintable.
The Irish were not to be left out as the inform Jerry
McCarthy closed the flight.
There were seven ‘2’s recorded on the day.
Monday, January 16,
Pattana - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colm Mullen (15) 39pts
2nd Tim Hickey (5) 36pts
3rd Morgan McEvoy (13) 34pts
4th Tore Eliassen (15) 34pts
B Flight
1st Ken Kelly (18) 37pts
2nd Shay Byrne (18) 33pts
3rd Tom Morrisroe (18) 33pts
4th Geoff Kubas (21) 32pts
Royal Lakeside’s superb condition and somewhat forgiving
layout was expected to yield some good scores, but that was before some
tightening up of the course and introduction of some carefully placed sand
traps. It is now a different kettle of fish altogether, not that Dublin’s
Colm Mullen minded - Colm used every trick in his well worn bag to put
together a splendid 39 points, for the man of the match and A Flight top
spot.
Tim Hickey’s solid even par round was good for the silver
while Morgan McEvoy and tore Eliassen faced off in a count back on 34 points
that dictated that they finished in that order, as the size of the field
required a fourth podium spot.
Ken Kelly attacked the layout with nearly the same fervor
as the Senior Flight as his 37 points found him four clear of Shay Byrne and
Tom Morrisroe, Shay getting the nod in the ensuing count back. Geoff ‘Elvis’
Kubas took filled final slot on the podium.
Chris Martin and Gerry Roche split a very healthy 2’s
pot.
Note: Wednesday and Friday was a competition held
jointly with the Golf Club on Soi LK Metro. For full results of the 2-day
comp, turn to their report on page 50.
Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road
Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in
and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Bartley’s Bonanza
Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Royal Hills road trip golfers
pose with wives and girlfriends for a group photo.
Mike Gerrard
January 26-27 - Royal
Hills Road Trip
The last time we went to Royal Hills it was possibly the
wettest two days I and the rest of the group had ever tried to play golf in.
So bad was it that on the second day most of the players had to give up.
Really speaking the course would never have been opened in any other
country, however it seems green fees and money take precedence here.
One good thing out of it was that the management were
very gracious and allowed us some rain checks for a future date. These we
used for this latest trip.
What a change! We had been told that this venue was one
of the best and most picturesque and so it proved when we played this last
two days in perfect weather conditions.
The course is somewhat similar to Soi Dao but bettered
manicured with a more modern hotel. However it still holds all the hazards
and difficulty of Soi Dao golf course.
Playing from the blue tees also set quite a challenge for
some of the players. The course length is about 6,500 yards from the blues.
Two days of fun and serious golf ended up with the
following results:
Day 1 Singles
1st Stuart Gordon 32pts
2nd Mike Gerrard 31pts
3rd John Bartley 30pts
Day 1 Pairs
1st Mike Gerrard & Keith
Etherington 39pts
2nd Stuart Gordon & Eamon Murtagh
39pts
3rd Bill Hewitt & John Bartley
38pts
Day 2 Singles
1st John Bartley 38pts
2nd Peter Rawling 36pts
3rd Keith Etherington 33pts
Day 2 Pairs
1st Bill Hewitt & John Bartley
44pts
2nd Mike Gerrard & Keith
Etherington 38pts
3rd Peter Rawling & Minere Khan
37pts
Singles 2 Day Total
1st John Bartley 68pts
2nd Keith Etherington 62pts
3rd Stuart Gordon 61pts
Pairs 2 Day Total
1st Bill Hewitt & John Bartley
82pts
2nd Mike Gerrard & Keith
Etherington 77pts
3rd Stuart Gordon & Eamon Murtagh 76pts
So, ‘Big’ John Bartley claimed the winning trophy as best
singles player over the 2 days. The best pairs (John Bartley & Bill Hewitt)
team were awarded with vouchers to the value of 500 baht each donated by
Nemo’s Music Lounge situated in Soi Diana.
Near pin winners for the two days were: Minere Khan (2),
Angel Matamala, Peter Rawling (2), Keith Etherington & Bill Hewitt.
We had many lucky draw prizes to give away to anyone who
did not win anything and some of them were kindly donated by Joe Miller.
Thanks Joe.
The Wooden Spoon went to Angel Matamala.
After the presentation it was then left for everyone to
make their way home, hopefully before it turned dark
General verdict by everyone – Fabulous! It will be done
again.
Tuesday, January 31 -
Phoenix
The last Tuesday of the month is reserved for our Stroke
Play competition for the Trattoria Italiana voucher donated by Giorgio
Baccioli.
It was Lake and Ocean course at Phoenix today, again in
perfect weather conditions for the field of players to challenge for the
title.
Winner today was Keith Etherington with a fine score of
net 69 to claim the winning place in A Flight and the best score of the day
to receive the Trattoria Italiana voucher.
In second place in A Flight was Angel Matamala with a net
71. This was also great to see by the fact that Angel was awarded the Wooden
Spoon at Royal Hills. Great comeback! Unfortunately it was to be his last
score on his holiday before going back to his native country.
In third place was Gary (Mr. Consistency) Blackburne with
a net 74.
In B Flight the winner was Bill Hewitt on net 72 ahead of
Sergio Volpi (net 75) in second and filling the podium in third was John
Stafford on net 77.
Near pins went to Bill Hewitt, Denis Dixon, Keith
Etherington & Adriano Reale.
The lucky draw prizes donated by The Relax Bar at Ban
Amphur went to Joe Miller and Richard Baldwin.
After the presentation we said our fond farewells to
Minere Khan and Angel Matamala who leave after a fine holiday here in Fun
City.

Butler blitz at Khao Kheow
Bunker Boys at The Bowling Green
Monday, January 30, Khao
Kheow C & B - Stableford
The large field of golfers arrived at Khao Kheow to find
that the management had introduced the “buggies only on paths” rule,
following overnight rain. Consequently we decided to play “preferred lies”
for the first time in several weeks. This rule always seems to create
confusion and controversy, especially at Khao Kheow, where it’s often
difficult to differentiate the fairways from the first cut. Fortunately
today there were no major disagreements and the round progressed smoothly.
![](pic/s24-Bunker967.jpg)
Reg Smart - back on the
podium at Lotus Valley.
The best round of the day was produced by Lee Butler with
a great score of 41 points to win the A flight. Neil Griffin continued his
new found form to win the B flight with 38 points. JJ Harney also continued
his consistent form to come third in the A flight and fourth overall,
thereby securing enough points to take the January Golfer of the Month title
– well done JJ.
A Flight
1st Lee Butler (15) 41pts
2nd Colin Greig (12) 39pts
3rd JJ Harney (12) 37pts
B Flight
1st Neil Griffin (28) 38pts
2nd Eddy Kelly (17) 36pts
3rd Barry Murnin (17) 35pts
Near Pins: Eric Keo, Eddie Kelly, Geoff Cox and
Mike Corner
Wednesday,February
1,Pattana A & B – Stableford
On arrival at Pattana we were surprised to find the
management requesting 200 baht more for the green fee than the price given
to us when we booked the course. Only when we threatened to walk away was
the issue resolved, and we were able to tee off on schedule. Pattana is not
everyone’s favourite course, and certainly there are some very long and
difficult holes, but overall the impression was favourable.
Colin Greig continued his fine run of form (surely his
handicap must come down soon) and also took 2 near pin prizes. Geoff Hart
lost out on second place to Barry Murnin on a count back, following a
disastrous blob on the 18th hole, but the blow was
softened by also taking the other two near pins.
1st Colin Greig (13) 38pts
2nd Barry Murnin (17) 34pts
3rd Geoff Hart (23) 34pts
4th Geoff Parker (17) 33pts
Near Pins: 2 each for Colin Greig and Geoff Hart.
Friday, February 3, Lotus
Valley – Stableford
We had a disappointing turnout today for our first ever
visit to the Lotus Valley course. Admittedly the journey is much longer than
our normal trips around Pattaya, and is a little more expensive (especially
for those using carts), but the condition of the course is top class, and
most of those that made the journey thought it worthwhile – but not a trip
that we’ll make every month.
The fairways here were superb, probably only comparable
to those at Siam C.C., and the greens were receptive and true, but the main
feature of the course is that water is in play on 17 of the 18 holes!
Fortunately no one kept count of the total number of balls lost, but one
golfer (who shall remain nameless) admitted to losing eight!
Reg Smart produced his best score for quite some time,
but lost on a count back to Tore Eliason, who turned in a great score of 23
points on the back nine.
1st Tore Eliason (15) 36pts
2nd Reg Smart (27) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (17) 35pts
Near Pins: Alan Freeman, Geoff Parker and Reg
Smart.
Note: The (delayed) annual Bunker Boys
championship will be played over 2 days on the 13th
and 15th February at Crystal Bay and Mountain Shadow
courses.
Following the recent demise of the Bunker Bar, the Bunker
Boys now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. and new players
with valid handicaps are always welcome. For more information call Dave on
087 1469978, email dave.evelyn18 @yahoo.co.uk.

Local sailors make waves at Phuket King’s Cup Regatta
The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, held every December,
attracts more and more Thai sailors each year and the 2011 edition saw Thai
sailors taking podium places throughout the series.
![](pic/s25-Thai%20Sailors-1.jpg)

Nowell)
The Royal Thai Navy based in Sattahip entered two boats
into the competitive IRC2 racing class, skippered by Chief Petty Officer
First Class Wiwat Poonpat (Royal Thai Navy 1) and CDR Pornprom Sakultem
(Royal Thai Navy 4). The Royal Thai Navy teams have sailed consistently well
at recent regattas in Thailand, and true to Thailand’s history as a
successful sports sailing nation, “Royal Thai Navy 1” swept to victory in
IRC 2 Class again in 2011.
Burapha University also had representation in IRC2 with a
crew skippered by Satian Puranawit and a boat named after the University. He
spoke of the Regatta’s prominence and appeal; “I’m so excited to join the
Regatta for the first time, and so glad to bring students who are national
athletes in the name of Burapha University to compete with sailors from
around the world. This is a phenomenal event for the international sailing
circle in Thailand. The Regatta improves the Thai athletes’ skill to a
higher level because they compete with many experienced sailors, learning a
lot with each race.
“It also attracts more Thai youths to sailing”, he
continued. “The competition was well organised and had very good race
management. We will definitely be competing again next year if we have
support from the University and from other sponsors.”
![](pic/s25-Thai%20Sailors-2.jpg)
(Above) Koravic and
Biranubongse Bhanubandh.
Fellow Thai skipper Suwan Poopoksakul skippering
“Lawana”, an X-512, battled in the highly-competitive and international
Premier Class with entries from China, UK, Hong Kong, Australia, Malaysia,
and Thailand. In fact, a majority of the vessels competing in the Phuket
King’s Cup Regatta had at least one Thai crew member. Overall, there were 74
Thai sailors who took part in the competition, making the Kingdom the fourth
most highly represented nation in the whole Regatta.
It is fitting that Thai sailors should demonstrate such
capable ability at the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta which sails under the
auspices of His Majesty the King of Thailand, and which was celebrating its
silver jubilee last year.
![](pic/s25-Thai%20Sailors-3.jpg)

“Sailing is one of the sports His Majesty loves to take
part in,” said Biranubongse Bhanubandh, a sailor who has sailed since 1987
and began on dinghies. “20 years ago, sailing was regarded as an upper-class
and costly sport. So its prevalence was limited to specific groups of people
and the development was delayed. But then there were supportive factors to
raise the popularity of sailing, especially the duty reduction which was a
considerable turning point for sailing development in Thailand. It made
sailing more affordable and led to the development of Thai sailors’ skills,
and now we have world champion Thai sailors.”
A majority of sailors competing in the International
Dinghy Class racing series were Thai, thanks to strong efforts by the Phuket
King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee who worked to encourage more Thai
youngsters to take up the sport. Thailand can be particularly proud of its
performance in the Optimist; Noppakao Poonpat from Sattahip was the 2011
World Champion, and the Thai team took the Team Optimist World Champion
title the same year, and, not coincidentally, Noppakao is the niece of Wiwat
Poonpat, skipper of the winning Royal Thai Navy 1 in Phuket. (Source

Student athletes compete in annual sports for the blind
![](pic/s26-Blind%20sports-1.jpg)
The flame of the Games is lit
to start the competition.
Derek Franklin
The annual sports competition at the Pattaya School for
the Blind came to an end on the morning of Thursday 26th January with the
final games of the sports events.
As in previous years the students were split into two
teams, blue and green, and the competition saw the students competing in
athletics, swimming, table tennis, soccer, checkers, goal ball and
volleyball.
The day started with the opening ceremony, which saw all
competitors marching around the school grounds until they were assembled in
front of the invited distinguished guests, including the Mayor of Pattaya,
Itthiphol Kunplome.
![](pic/s26-Blind%20sports-2.jpg)
Father Matthew presents the
winning medals.
Many may think that blindness will be an obstacle to
sports participation, but the blind and visually impaired students want to
compete just as sighted students do.
However, blind students cannot compete on the same level
as sighted people, and sports do have to be adapted.
![](pic/s26-Blind%20sports-3.jpg)
Mayor Itthiphol learns that
playing without sight is not easy.
When playing volleyball, the ball is allowed to bounce
once and with the ball having a small bell inside the players listen for the
sound of the bell before catching it.
Running events will see people standing around the
running track and guiding the runners. If the runner is going off course
they are told to run straight, more to the left, more to the right.
Some will have a small piece of string tied to their
wrists. The other end is held by a teacher or trainer who will run alongside
the blind athlete, but will not help in any way. Rules are strict, and if a
trainer is seen to be pulling the athlete, then the runner are disqualified.
First competition taking place on the day saw Mayor
Itthiphol being invited to wear a blindfold and compete against one of the
blind students in a game of table tennis.
![](pic/s26-Blind%20sports-4.jpg)
Mayor Itthiphol shakes hands
with his ping-pong rival.
Table tennis for the blind is played differently than
regular table tennis. The ball contains a small bell, and instead of being
hit over the net the ball goes under the net. Mayor Itthiphol soon realized
that it is not as easy as it sounds or looks, but he played a good game.
There are several very talented athletes at the school,
many of whom regularly participate in local, national and international
sporting competitions.
Whilst there are many students who stand at the closing
ceremony with not a single medal around their necks, others are almost
weighed down by their hoard of gold and silver medals.
But for those who won no medals this year - better luck
next year.

award for best cheerleaders.

In the seniors divisions, local windsurfer Aek Boonsawat
(29pts) put in a strong last day performance to rise up the rankings and
take third position overall behind eventual champion Leung Ho Chun from Hong
Kong (18pts) and first runner-up Lee Tae Hun of S. Korea (23pts).

captured the gold medal in the female equivalent category on 24 points.
The Techno 293 Open was won by Thailand’s Krongkaew
Sakulfaeng (32pts) ahead of Tanaka Makito in second place.

RS-X sailors race off from the
start line.
Junior (under 15) honours in the Techno 293 class went to
Thailand’s Suthee Thong-onn and Singapore’s Lim C Ying in the male and
female categories respectively.
Finally, the Mistral One Design Asia Championship for men
saw a tight battle between Indonesia’s Oscar Sulaksana and Navin Singhsat
from Thailand, with the former just winning out with 13 points to 17 over
his Thai rival.
The female division was won by Maah Kha Him from Hong
Kong on 68 points ahead of compatriot Loh Sing Yin (78pts) while third place
went to Thailand’s Sunaree Sermros.
The 2012 Pattaya City Asian Windsurfing Championships saw
12 nations compete and were seen as a warm-up event for the sailors to
prepare for the 3rd Asian Beach Games in China and 30th Olympiad taking
place in London in August. Some 33 awards were up for grabs during the
course of the week-long event.

PTT Pattaya Open 2012 gets underway at Dusit Thani Pattaya
Finals to be played this weekend
![](pic/s30-Tennis1.jpg)
Tennis stars, sponsors and
dignitaries attend the press conference for the 2012 PTT Pattaya Open held at
the Dusit Thani Pattaya, Sunday, Feb. 5.
This year’s PTT Pattaya Open officially began following a
press conference held last Sunday, 5 February 2012 at the Napalai Convention
Hall of Dusit Thani Pattaya. The event was attended by all the sponsors and the
participating tennis stars such as the tournament’s number one seed and world
No. 8 player Vera Zvonareva of Russia and number 2 seed Dominika Cibulkovแ.
Zvonareva, the winner here in 2009 and 2010 is looking for a
hat trick of wins after losing out in the semi-finals at last year’s tournament
but will face fierce competition from Cibulkovแ, fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko,
China’s Jie Zheng and the defending champion, Slovakia’s Daniela Hantuchova.
![](pic/s30-Tennis2.jpg)
Chinese Taipei’s Kai-Chen Chang
showed strong form in the qualifiers on Sunday and Monday.
Part of the highlights during the press conference was the
drawing of the singles competition for this US$220,000 WTA sanctioned event,
with Zvonareva and Cibulkovแ seeded to meet in the final should they both get
that far.
The weeklong event from 5-12 February has previously been
voted as Tournament of the Year by the WTA tour players who cite reasons such as
the unique experience they have in the resort city of Pattaya and the relaxed
atmosphere as well as the warm hospitality from Dusit Thani Pattaya, the
tournament’s host hotel for 21 years now.
With many players still arriving from around the world
following their Fed Cup matches at the weekend, there were only two main draw
matches on Monday. Australia’s Anastasia Rodionova advanced into the second
round in comfort by beating Frenchwoman Irnya Bremond 6-4 6-0. She saved all
five break points she faced in the match, after getting off to a perfect start
with an early break in the first set and then dominating the second by winning
an impressive 76 percent of the points.
Seventh seed Sonara Cirstea from Romania then took to the
court against Erika Sema of Japan and, like Rodionova, wasted little time in
advancing with a 6-2 6-2 victory.
The qualifying rounds were completed, with Chinese Taipei’s
Kai-Chen Chang overwhelming Cagla Buyukakcay 6-0 6-2 and her compatriot Su-Wei
Hsieh beating Qiang Wang of China 6-4 6-3. Su-Wei is in Pattaya for the first
since 2008, when she contested the doubles final with Vania King. A full program
featuring all the tops stars was due to get underway at press time on Tuesday.
Come tournament finals on Sunday 12 February, the stadium of
Dusit Thani Pattaya will once again be filled with tennis fans that will be
supporting their favourite players. The PTT Pattaya Open has continued to hold
its reputation of bringing in international athletes to the resort city thereby
