Phur to the fore at Emerald
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
![](pic/s1-Mulligans.jpg)
Terry Phur & Jeff Wylie.
Tuesday, April 10,The Emerald - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to The Emerald, on a hot and humid
day, finally broken with a storm a couple of holes before completing the
round. Everyone kept on going through the rain, although I was surprised how
quickly surface water gathered on the 18th fairway.
Scores were reasonable, if not as spectacular as last
week, with Terry Phur (18) recording 38 points, while Mam (26) played well
for 36 points to get second spot. Terry also made a nice shot on 15 to get
the NTP while Jeff got 2, no birdies 2s though for these guys.
Thursday, April
12,Mountain Shadow - Stableford
Mountain Shadow was the venue for Thursday’s game, again
hot, but with a good breeze blowing at times, making things interesting for
all participants.
Clive Hoseason (25) continued his recent good form,
getting the chocolates today after signing for 37 points, just edging Jeff
Wylie (5) who came home in an ambulance for 36 points. NTPs were spread
around with Clive & Jonathan getting 1 each, while Jing-Jo got 2.
There will be no report from ML next week as we have a
week off to avoid the travel & associated chaos which comes with Songkran.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call
0890941841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Seil revels in his first victory
IPGC golf from The Links
Sunday, April 8, Green
Valley – Stableford
A small turnout today, due to the start of the usual
Songkran exodus, meant only one division, a trend that was to continue for
the rest of the week. The course is still in excellent condition, but hot
and humid conditions, coupled with a heavy storm midway through the round,
meant points were again hard to come by.
Seil Revels led the way with 32 points, beating Jon Batty
into second place, with Paul Magowan back in third.
Seil also registered the only ‘2’ of the day.
1st Seil Revels (5) 32pts
2nd Jon Batty (8) 32pts
3rd Paul Magowan (25) 27pts
Tuesday, April 10,
Plutaluang – Stableford
This was my first ever visit to the Navy course, and was
a late change of venue after we were priced out of Laem Chabang, and after
having received good reports of the course the previous week, we decided to
give it a go. We were allocated the North and West 9’s, which playing off
the white tees, measure a healthy 6,700 yards.
I was quite impressed with the layout of the course,
which features some very interesting holes, and the notoriously slow greens
ran very true and were surprisingly good to play on. Unfortunately the same
cannot be said of the course “through the green” as some of the golfers
struggled to differentiate between the fairway and rough on many of the
holes – perhaps they need to invest in a new lawnmower?
Russell Exley paid his first visit to the winners
enclosure this month, scoring a creditable 34 points in tough conditions,
beating Richard Hurley 16 to 15 on count back. Bryan Dore completed the
placings a further point behind.
Alec Milbourne was the sole beneficiary of the ‘2’s comp.
1st Russell Exley (7) 34pts
2nd Richard Hurley (8) 34pts
3rd Bryan Dore (5) 33pts
Thursday, April 12,
Pattana – Stableford
On Thursday we travelled up the 331 to Pattana to tackle
the tough B&C courses off the white tees. The greens here, as with many
courses at the moment, had been hollow tined and dressed fairly recently,
and as such were much slower than usual, but the course on the whole is in
fantastic condition and represents a true test of golf, and I believe it is
a venue that we should visit a lot more regularly than we do.
Conditions were again hot and humid, and the energy
sapping back 9 proved too much for most, with only one player getting
anywhere near to matching their front 9 scores.
Jon Batty continued his recent run of placings, limping
home to victory with a 15 point back 9 after scoring a solid 18 on the
front, with Jens Gunnarson and big hitting Irishman Bryan Dore finishing 2
points behind - Jens taking second place by virtue of a 16 to 15 point back
9.
Phil Groves and Jens Gunnarson shared the ‘2’s pot, both
holing out at the short 3rd on the B9.
1st Jon Batty (8) 33pts
2nd Jens Gunnarson (15) 31pts
3rd Bryan Dore (5) 31pts
Note: The Links depart from the hotel on Soi
Buakhao at 9.30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays and for Rayong Green Valley
every Sunday. Sign up at the hotel or contact Jon on 080 021 1034. A full

A Shaw winner
at Crystal Bay
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited the beautiful Crystal
Bay club in Bangpra on Monday, 9th April to play a stableford competition on
the well turned out C and A nines. The course was virtually empty as the
group were allowed to start thirty minutes early and from the start distant
thunder rolled around the skies but thankfully nothing but a brief light
sprinkle occurred.
The competition turned out to be tight affair with
on-leave Peter Masters turning in a card of 34 points for third place, just
pipped by Seil Revels who played his best round for three months with the
group, recording the best gross of 78 for his 35 points.
The winner was a very late entry, Brian Shaw, who just
happened to be awake early after the entertainment restrictions in force the
evening before meant that he was raring to go. He finished with 38 points to
cap a good day, having won in his final round on his previous visit a few
weeks ago.
Peter Ditz had the honour of the sole birdie ‘2’, on C4
and the Booby Bevy was withheld in deference to the solemnity of the day.
Good day for Glenn
The Pattaya Golf Society chose Khao Kheow as the venue
for its stableford fixture on Wednesday, 11th April, testing the A and B
nines as a combination for the first time in many visits and found the
course in good condition but with some old rain damage scarring still
evident on the B nine. The greens were very good however and an empty course
again proved the ideal backdrop.
The large single flight found scoring difficult as usual
on the challenging course and Ray Jackson emerged in third place with 33
points. In second was the only lady in the field Margaret Wilkinson and she
produced 36 points for second. The winner in his final round this trip was
Glenn Martin and he found his best form for a long while in scoring 39
points.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Joe Niisato and Mr Len on A5
and for Seil Revels on the signature Island B8 hole. The Booby Bevy went to
Joe Niisato for his hero-to-zero performance on the back nine which saw him
go from one under to eight over in two hours of hard concentration. But Khao
Kheow can do that to the best of golfers Joe, chin up!
Purdie’s the pickat Rayong
The Pattaya Golf Society retreated from Pattaya on the
eve of its annual madness known as Songkran when the group visited Rayong CC
on Friday, 13th April. Imagine the joy at being told that green fees were
free but carts were compulsory! The course was empty as the group’s single
flight teed off.
Scoring was tough as the hard and dry fairways demanded
consistent and solid iron play. Benny Hansen was surprised to find his 28
points took third place, two behind John Mason, making the frame for the
first time this trip, on 30. The winner was Andrew Purdie on his return from
Australia with 31 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Mr
Len for the day’s largest split, an eight point deficit on the back nine.
The return to Pattaya confirmed the mayhem had already
begun and thus the curtain was drawn on the PGS activities for a week, when
only a welcome distraction at faraway Wangjuntr would offer solace until the
deluge relented.

Brackett shoots blistering round at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

Friday podium placers (from

Monday, April 9, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
There were 15 Outbackers today playing A & B at Khao
Kheow, with A1 a gentle warm up hole to start us off, with no water or OB to
capture any wayward balls, unlike the three tough following holes, the long
par 5, the horrid par 3, with all down the right and then the uphill Index
1; if you’ve got half a dozen points after that start, you’re in with a
shout! The courses were in good condition from tee to green
After nine holes, the black clouds and thunder started
rolling around the course and we all thought that the game would be called
off for at least half an hour and that we should venture into a Watering
Hole, but fortunately we managed to escape any downpour.
Going down the 18th Hole (9th on B) John Cogan and Suzi
Lawton were all level, in their final match before John leaves for Ireland
next week. John two putted for a bogie and Suzi one putted for par to win
the match; poor John was beside himself, lying down on the green with his
legs up in the air and arms waving while Suzi was doing a dance. Children!
There were three ‘2’s from John White, Grant Airey & Suzi
Lawton.
1st Darren Cook (29/Hi26.7) 38pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (18/Hi19.9) 38pts
3rd John Cogan (18/Hi16.8) 37pts
Monday, April 9, Burapha A
& B – Stableford
24 Outbackers travelled to Burapha for our normal Monday
outing and we played A and B courses from the blue markers. The day was hot
and humid until the last few holes when a light rain arrived which cooled
everybody down. The course had copped a lot of rain over the weekend and
Burapha were closing the course all day Tuesday to do some major repairs to
bunkers.
The A course was in great condition and fairways, tees,
rough and greens had all been cut and bunkers raked and playable; the B
course, the fairways and tees had been cut but the rough was especially
brutal around the greens and bunkers and a lot of bunkers had not been fixed
and some were GUR but generally it was just a tough day.
Welcome to some new members, Steve Ward, Stewart O’Brien,
Dave Wilkie, Jeremy Sait, Jason Hilton and Arthur Stokes.
There were no ‘2’s on the day so we played two divisions
with five places in each division.
Division 2 was won by Les Easton with 36 points on his 20
handicap on a countback from David Maddox on his 23 handicap with third
place going to John O’Keefe (21) on 35 points; Bob Lindborg (24) took fourth
losing on count back and Howard Marsden (23) finished in fifth with 33.
Division 1 was won by Jim Brackett with the best round on
the day, 41 points on his 9 handicap, from Svenn Ole Lund with 37 points on
his 18 handicap, third place going to Capt’ Steve (12) with 34 points;
fourth placed Kerry Beck (13) scored 33 points beating Owen Lloyd (9) on
count back.
Div A (0-18)
1st Jim Brackett (9/Hi6.4) 41pts
2nd Svenn Lund Ole (18/Hi14.9)
37pts
3rd Steve Mann (12/Hi9.7) 34pts
4th Kerry Beck (13/Hi10.3) 33pts
5th Owen Lloyd (9/Hi6.3) 33pts
Div B (19+)
1st Les Easton (20/Hi16.2) 36pts
2nd David Maddox (23/Hi18.5) 36pts
3rd John O’Keefe (21/Hi17) 35pts
4th Bob Lindborg (24/Hi19.8) 35pts
5th Howard Marsden (23/Hi18.6)
33pts
Tuesday, April 10, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableford
There were just 10 players today (9 men and 1 lady) who
went to PCC to play the front nine twice; first 9 white tees, and the second
9 blue, with red and white for the lady.
The course was deserted and the rounds were about 3ฝ
hours. Work has already begun in earnest on the back nine and a number of
new tees are being built on the front nine, which is in reasonable
condition.
Today we said ‘goodbye’ to the jovial – ever smiling -
John White who returns to Dublin for a few months, also it was the last
Tuesday for Ian Covill who returns to the UK to continue his medical
treatment. All Outbackers look forward to the return of these good friends.
The hamster man John White (22) led the way with 35
points, and a ‘2’ bringing an even bigger smile. Returning after a few weeks
away Terry Marney (29) took second place, also with 35 but losing on count
back.
Tuesday’s regular organiser, ‘Chad’ Barry Chadbourn (21)
was 3rd with 34 points.
The other ‘2’ was from our regular ‘Tuesday girl’ Noy.
Just as a note; the competition at PCC, playing the front
9 twice, was run using the player’s Handicap Index and not their playing
handicap due to a software problem. The scores below reflect the adjusted
scores after the playing handicaps have been applied but will not affect the
result of the competition as declared. It is hoped the bug in the software
will be corrected shortly.
1st Terry Marney (31/Hi29.3) 36pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (22/Hi21) 35pts
3rd John White (23/Hi21.9) 35pts
Wednesday, April 11,
Bangpra – Stableford
So after the trials and tribulations over the last few
weeks, General Jack finally got himself out onto a golf course and what
better place to play than Bangpra. Great value for money (1,000 Baht)
walking and in fabulous condition with the slopey greens making the putting
an extra special test.
32 Outbackers here for the experience, as we teed off,
dead on time; it was perhaps a little slow for some, about four hours forty
but there were a lot a people on the course, which is hardly surprising,
given the price. It is pretty certain that the Outback will return here a
couple of times during the low season but please be prepared for the round
to take a bit more than the average.
Capt’ Steve got himself off to a great start getting up
and down from the edge of the first green to make his par before his chip
from the back of the second came up short and he missed the putt for bogey.
After bogeying the third; he then parred the 4th, birdied the 5th & 6th and
parred the 7th for a haul of 14 points in four holes, from which he never
really looked back. Good golf mate!
Two Martins filled the top two places in Div B with
Crichton (37pts) beating Kingswood (34pts) comprehensively by three shots
and Suzi grabbing the third spot, also with 34.
With the course set up with some long par threes it was
not a surprise that there was only one ‘2’, which came from Rosco on the
8th.
Div A (0-14)
1st Steve Mann (10/Hi9.7) 39pts
2nd Grant Airey (10) 36pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (9/Hi9.4) 34pts
Div B (15+)
1st Martin Crichton (17/Hi16) 37pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (16/Hi15.1)
34pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (21/Hi19.1) 34pts
Friday, April 13, Green
Valley – Stableford
Although yet another holiday, there was an excellent
turnout of 36 players at Green Valley for our usual Friday competition, on a
bright, breezy, sunny day but unfortunately the breeze died away and the day
got progressively hotter and hotter.
The course was still in great condition even though the
greens were certainly a lot slower than the previous week. The pace of play
was a little slower than normal but all players were finished in under four
and a half hours, not bad for a holiday and the course was well booked as
evidenced by the lack of car parking spaces.
The Outback is to give up using the EGA handicapping
system after a trial period of just under a year; at yesterday’s first
meeting of the new Outback Committee, the Outback decided to adopt a true
CONGU system of handicapping and considering that a lot of players played
with a lower handicap than last week the scores in fact were a lot better.
The decision to change was brought about by the complications of player’s
handicaps changing as much as four or five shots at different courses and
players admitting that they didn’t really know what their true handicap was.
A couple of welcome notes to some Outback newbies; namely
Svein Sorenson, recently moved here from Norway and in particular Terry
Phur. Also welcome back to Alan Buchanan who joined his Dad, Frank and
brother, Dave for a game today.
Division 3 winner was Greg Ritchie who had the best score
of the day with 40 points off his 21 handicap, from Sugar Ray Handford with
37 points on his 18 handicap who beat Terry Phur also on a 18 handicap on a
count back.
Division 2 winner was Svenn Ole Lund with 38 points on
his 15 handicap from Doug Campbell with 36 points on his 13 handicap and in
third place was Bobby Driggs with 35 points on his 14 handicap.
Division 1 saw Dave Buchanan shoot a 71 gross for 39
points off his 2 handicap, a great round, second was Chis Davisson (10) with
37 points, from in third place Capt’ Steve (9) with 34.
There were two ‘2’s for the day and they went to Ian
Heddle on hole 12 and Doug Campbell on Hole 16.
Div A (0–11)
1st Dave Buchanan (2/Hi1.7) 39pts
2nd Chris Davisson (10/Hi10.4)
37pts
3rd Steve Mann (9/Hi8.9) 34pts
Div B (12–16)
1st Svenn Ole Lund (15/Hi14.6)
38pts
2nd Doug Campbell (13/Hi12.5) 36pts
3rd Bobby Driggs (14/Hi13.9) 35pts
Div C (17+)
1st Greg Ritchie (21/Hi21.1) 40pts
2nd Sugar Ray Handford (18/Hi18.3)
37pts
3rd Terry Phur (18/Hi17.5) 37pts

Larry leads the way at Phoenix
The Blue Moose Golf Group
The Blue Moose Bar launched its second outing this past
12th of April and Phoenix Golf Club was chosen for the day’s event. Fifteen
players hit the course that took the energy out of almost everyone. The
front nine greens were still recovering from aeration work and the back nine
greens were rock hard. Just when players got used to the front nine they had
to adjust to the back nine.
![](pic/s7-Blue%20Moose.jpg)
Thursday winner Larry
Emerson, left, with Joe St. Laurent.
The climbs to the tee boxes and greens were also a bit
much for some of the older players, one cashing it in after nine holes.
Asked about getting a yellow flag to permit the cart to be closer to the
green, players were told no problem for an additional 1,000 baht. So much
for concern for the older folks!
Back at the Blue Moose Bar the cards were tallied and the
scores were not too bad. Larry Emerson took first place with a 36, Joe St.
Laurent was second with 35 and Richard Hall followed with a 34. There were
four players with 33 points; Mark Campbell, Jim Hern, Matt Millar, and Bruce
Funk.

Organizers peak at the Mountain
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pic/s8-Berts977-1.jpg)
Tuesday’s top three with one
of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, April 10,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
Life is a bit chaotic at present with people not
available for the next few weeks and playing on a Thursday not a Friday due
to holidays. We will also not be playing on Tuesday the 17th as it is in the
middle of the great water debate, but normal service will resume on Friday
the 20th - unless you come from down the road in
Jomtien.
![](pic/s8-Berts977-2.jpg)
Thursday winner Dick Warberg.
On this day we had the trip down to Mountain Shadow and
this has been made much easier since Route 7 came to town. On to Route 7,
down to Khao Kheow, at the bridge turn left, at the road turn right and keep
going, past Burapha, until you see the course on the left. Mind, watch out
as the entrance is not very well signed.
A quick book in and onto the first tee saw us soon
underway. A decision was made to play the white tees, the Mickey Mouse ones’
as time after time we play the blue tees and it results in players not
enjoying the course, and being destroyed as it is too hard. So off we went
in conditions that promised to be hot and humid, and so it turned out.
This is a tough course; probably the toughest of all in
the area, but stand on the first tee and one can see the allure of a quality
layout. The trees provide a setting where you do not want to be off line as
they (the trees) are really difficult to get out of. The fairways were not
too bad but on this day the greens were a little slow. The greens are a real
test here, never think because you are on in regulation that you will score
well, they can be brutal.
The weather as said was humid and hot and by the end the
players were struggling. It was nice to get back into the changing room and
get into a coldish shower. On this day the showers were working fine.
Back at Bert’s it was into the presentation and the
winner on this day was the organiser, and scribe, Derek Brook with 41 points
while in second was the other organiser Dick Warberg with 39 points and you
can be assured we will be playing here next month! In third we had a count
back on 38 points that went to the last hole before Mashi Kaneta came in
third and Joel Flor came in fourth.

Gaussa, Bill McGarvie
Thursday, April 12,
Plutaluang – Stableford
Every time we go to this course I have to be careful what
I say (and usually I am not) because so many players say they enjoy playing
it. Indeed I actually have players who ask that we play it more regularly.
Well really to me it depends which 18 holes we play.
We played the North and West on this day, my least
favourite 18 holes. I am told it has ‘character’ and it is the 18 holes that
the regional professionals play. The fairways were a bit bald and I am
advised by the ‘members’ not to play woods off the fairway. I can see why.
The whole 18 hole is covered by broadleaf grass and I
find it very unfriendly as I prefer to play off normal grass. The greens
were soft and spongy, a bit like a trampoline, and putting on them was like
putting on velcro. Mind, I have to say that I go in an immediate negative
mode when I arrive, and am usually beaten before I hit a ball.
In the past we have played South and East when the course
has been in its best condition and even on occasions I have been known to
play excellent rounds on both 18 holes but usually South and East, which at
those times is quite passable. Suffice to say I am outnumbered by the other
players, but I suspect they are in Pattaya mode, where there are no dodgy
courses. However, no doubt we will book it, and many will play again next
month.
Incidentally, as I said last time, the Admiral would put
me in the stockade for my views on the course, he very kindly told me he
would not, however the brig would await as the navy have a brig. Such good
friends have we.
With the course ‘difficult’, the weather hot and humid,
we expected the scores to be low in points and so they proved to be - the
scribe going from hero to zero in the space of 2 days (that is first to
last). So with Mashi driving I had a moment of ‘eye relaxation’ on the way
back to Bert’s.
At Bert’s it was into the presentation where the winner
on the day and in a run of good form was Dick Warberg with 36 points. In
second, who else but our perpetual winner, Mashi Kaneta, who never knows
when he is beaten, and in third was J.C. Lhoste with 31 points on count back
over Stan Everingham. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Mashi Kaneta (2), Terry Hopkins

Martyn first time winner at Emerald
Backyard Golf Society
![](pic/s9-Backyard.jpg)
Martyn with the staff from
Kisses Bar.
With numbers down this week due to some guys going back
to work, it was a hot and humid start to the Backyard Golf Society’s weekly
game of golf at Emerald Golf Course. 7 players this week with everyone in
all competitions but due to it being a public holiday the course was
extremely busy, resulting in a slow round and a lack of concentration by all
players on the back 9.
4 players came in with 29pts but Martyn won on count
back, scoring 17 on the back 9 leaving Mike as the only regular who has yet
to win in the 2 years the society has been in existence!
With no one hitting the green on the 15th the nearest the
pin prize has rolled over to next week and the skin winners were as follows:
Dan M (6),Tony C (4), Terry C (4), Mike C (3) and Martyn (1).
With Tony C leaving next week it was off down to BC to
have a few cold ones and try to avoid any water being thrown about by
over-zealous bar girls!

Blacky & Dobbsy on top at the Hill
PSC Golf from the Café Kronborg
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, 10th
April – Treasure Hill – StablefordAs this was our last competition game before our 13
day break for Songkran we understandably had a full field plus a
three-ball, all ready to tackle the testy Treasure Hill layout.
![](pic/s10-Kronborg977.jpg)
Tuesday flight winners:
Jerry Dobbs, left, with Peter Blackburn.
We welcomed back Dick Braimbridge, returning from a
month in Australia and also Jon Haugen who had not played with us for
quite some time. Sadly we were saying farewell to Dave Neal and Ron
Folks, returning to Birmingham, U.K. after a month in Pattya and also
Dave’s friend Thientong who will now return to her job as a caddy at
Laem Chabang. Eddie “The Eagle” Glinsek is heading off back to Ohio
U.S.A. after three and a half months here and Jerry Dobbs & Scott
Lobenwein were going back to work in Australia. Niels Hansen & Jan
Lovgreen were also preparing to return to Denmark after lengthy stays
and we look forward to seeing all of them later in the year.
We departed the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs and
50 minutes later arrived at the course which appeared to be very quiet.
As the previous day (Monday) was a Public Holiday we chose to play this
course on the Tuesday which coincidentally is one of their Sports Days
offering a 500 baht Green Fee and quite frankly we were surprised to
find that we practically had this fine course to ourselves.
After a few practice chips & putts we managed to get
our first four-ball away 25 minutes early at 0935 hrs and in once again
perfect weather we were able to have a leisurely game of golf,
appreciating the very good condition that the golf course was in with
the greens much improved after our last game here a couple of weeks ago.
We completed our front nine in just on two hours and
after a quick drink break at “half time” we proceeded in what was now
fairly hot and humid conditions with rain clouds threatening above. The
“Rain Gods” were with us yet again and it was not until we were on the
last green that we heard an enormous clap of thunder but still no rain;
in fact it just started to sprinkle as our last group was finishing.
I must mention the work that has been put in at this
venue, in particular the tee boxes which are now in superb condition. We
finished our full round in the excellent time of four hours and five
minutes.
There were 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to
19 and B Flight for 20 and over. There were rewards for nearest the pin
on all four par threes and longest first putts on the ninth & eighteenth
greens.
The scores indicated that the golf course was the
winner on the day with just one golfer playing to their handicap or
better and that happened to be yours truly who won the A Flight with 37
points. A count back on 35 points for second and third places saw Niels
Hansen (21 point back nine) prevail over Mike Allidi (17 point back
nine. Fourth spot went to Bjarne Kjaer (18 point back nine) with 33
points on a count back from Martin Todd (16 point back nine) who just
missed out on a place on the podium.
B Flight was won by the departing Aussie Jerry Dobbs
with 35 points from J C Lhoste in second place on 34 points. Yet another
count back was required to determine third & fourth places with Bo
Cardwell (19 point back nine) beating Frank Donnelly (16 point back
nine), both having 33 points.
A Flight (0-19)
1st Peter Blackburn (11) 37pts
2nd Niels Hansen (14) 35pts
3rd Mike Allidi (3) 35pts
4th Bjarne Kjaer (19) 33pts
B Flight (20+)
1st Jerry Dobbs (23) 35pts
2nd J C Lhoste (23) 34pts
3rd Bo Cardwell (28) 33pts
4th Frank Donnelly (24) 33pts
Near Pins: 2nd – Mike
Allidi; 6th – J C Lhoste; 13th – Thientong
Charoenrung; 17th – Ken Bernek
Long Putts: 9th – J C Lhoste; 18th – Mick
O’Connor
The Compass Cap (awarded for worst score on the day) was won by Eddie
“The Eagle” Glinsek, much to the disappointment of Ron Folks who was
hoping to take the Compass Cap back to Birmingham with him.

‘The Eagle’ soars to new heights
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, April 8, Green
Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Jan Erikssen (11) net 64
2nd Michael Prideaux (12) net 66
3rd Garry Blackburne (6) net 67
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (19) net 62
2nd Jim Bell (18) net 66
3rd Peter Wallace (21) net 66
Red Flight
1st Yui Bietry (9) net 68
Near Pins: No 4 Jim Bell; No 9 Gary Blackburne; No
12 Jim Brackett; No 16 Eddy Beilby
![](pic/s11-Lewiinski.jpg)
Medal winner Eddy Beilby with
Lewiinski’s Golf Manager Colin.
Recording and equaling the lowest monthly medal in the
competition’s history, Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby scorched the Green Valley
layout and the field with a gross 81 (net 62) masterpiece. Eddy joins Paul
Ovens who achieved this feat (net 62) in December 2002. Paul beat the then
record set by Sven Vistung (net 63) in June of the same year.
Left holding scores that would have won most other months
were Eddy’s B Flight place holders Jim ‘No’ Bell and Ireland’s Peter Wallace
who both shot excellent net 66’s, with Jim taking the silverware via the
count back. Spare a thought also for Andre Fortis whose fine net 68 counted
for nothing.
A Flight was not to be outdone as Jan ‘the quite one’
Erikssen must have thought he had done enough to win with an outstanding net
64. Jan was two clear of Michael Prideaux while Garry Blackburne edged Jack
Grindvold off the podium, gaining a count back verdict as both carded a net
67. Jack did however win the low gross trophy.
Yui’s net 68 took the Red Flight and the crystal engraved
glass. Eddy and Yui get to compete in the gold medal later in the year.
Michael Prideaux, Jim Brackett, and Jim Bell all carded a
pair of 2’s along with four other single 2’s.
Monday, April 9, St
Andrews - Stableford
1st Ed Wyckoff (10) 39pts
2nd John Heaney (19) 39pts
3rd Tore Eliassen (16) 37pts
It has its detractors but St Andrews 2000 provides a
marvelous test and enhances the golf diversity of the Eastern Seaboard. The
society doesn’t play it often, perhaps not often enough, but a small but
fine field was willing to take on the challenge.
A three place field was led by Ed ‘our man in the white
house’ Wyckoff who managed a fine 39 point performance. He still needed a
count back to have the better of Irishman John Heaney whose calculations
undoubtedly made for deft course management.
Co. Offaly’s Andy Byrne showed the society a side to his
golf never seen before as he yielded third place to Tore Eliassen. Andy did
have a trick up his sleeve however as he posted the only 2 of the day.
Wednesday, April 11,
Greenwood C&A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (15) 38pts
2nd Kevin McEntee (8) 36pts
B Flight
1st John Heaney (19) 35pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (18) 34pts
‘The Donkey’ served notice that there is still some life
in that beat-up body as he showed the field nothing but tail lights in his A
Flight winning performance and was the only player to better par with 38
points. Bunched behind him were two of the infamous Co. Offaly gang, Kevin
‘you know who’ and Andy ‘Stick erm up’ Byrne. Andy for the second game in
succession remained satangless.
In an all Irish affair John Heaney Put the hurt on B
Flight with a solid 35 points, getting the better of Peter ‘Don O’Corleone’
Henshaw by a single stroke.
Jon Haugen and Thierry Petrement split the 2,s pot.
Thursday, April 12,
Crystal Bay C&A - Stableford
1st Andrew Byrne (8) 42 pts
2nd Tore Eliassen (16) 41 pts
3rd Esara Duangari (36) 39 pts
It’s been a trend that has been building over the last
three weeks, that Kevin ‘you know who’, who has enjoyed the lowest handicap
in the County Offaly gang for as long as anyone can remember, is in danger
of losing that distinction as Andy ‘stick erm up’ Byrne put on another
dazzling display of golf by shooting 42 points on the Crystal Bay course.
That outburst naturally out distanced the otherwise fine
efforts of his A Flight brethren Tore Eliassen 41 points and a pile up of
three on 39 points involving Esara Duangari, Eddy the Eagle and someone
named Kevin. The resulting count back put the lady before gentlemen.
Tore Eliassen and Kevin halved the 2’s pot.

Jimmy Brackett, Tony Duthie &
Peter LeNoury at Rancho Charnvee, Khao Yai.
Steve Ellison
Monday, April 9, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Peter LeNoury (9) 39pts
2nd Stefan Berg (5) 38pts
3rd Mashi Kaneta (11) 38pts
4th Peter Hynard (12) 37pts
Mr. Le Noury was seen outside The Golf Club at 5:00 in
the morning just before his victory on the links of the beautiful Rayong
Green Valley. No, it’s not as seedy as it may sound, he was joined by
another dozen hardy souls to watch the final round of The Masters
Tournament. I suppose it may have been Bubba’s performance that may have
given Peter the inspiration to get out there and play to win this week.
Peter likes this course anyway, he shot a 43 a couple of weeks back but only
came in 2nd to his nemesis, a certain Mr. Tommy
“Bahama” Balch.

Michael Winterburn at the
bar.
We say goodbye to our 2nd place
finisher Stefan Berg who is winging his way back to Sweden, so see you next
year mate. Mashi Kaneta had another smooth round to better his handicap by 2
strokes just to get beaten by Stefan on the count back, with Golf Manager
Peter Hynard scooping 4th place.
Wednesday, April 11, Pattana (white tees) – Stableford
1st Michael Winterburn (6) 38pts
2nd Ken Aihara (5) 37pts
3rd Mike (11) 34pts
Bob (Nickatelly) Newell took the helm to run the golf
today and returned to Pattana full of promise, only to find the sad reality
of a comp without any lucky draw prize. Bob and this writer were invited to
play here last month as part of the annual get-together of local golf
societies by the generous management of Pattana. It was a fun day out on a
great but mostly overlooked course.
Everyone loved this course today, in spite of an hour
wait for a nasty storm that passed through midway through the round. All
cleared up and we were of once again to take on the challenge of Pattana.
The course has now matured into a lovely landscape and features just enough
undulations and motion in the fairways to make things interesting. General
course maintenance has also been given priority and it shows.
Michael Winterburn is now a big fan of Pattana, shooting
38 points that gave him the coveted centre block on the podium with steady
Ken Aihara on 37 and Mike finishing off the trio with a 34 off his 11
handicap.
One thing everyone commented on was how quick the trip
back was … 37 minutes door-to-door so it really is a quality course within
easy reach of central Pattaya. The clubhouse here is without question the
finest in the area, and they even have a good menu with reasonable prices.
We will be back soon. Even if we can’t nick a telly!
Friday, April 13, Rancho Charnvee (white tees) – Stableford
1st Brian Prudden (20) 38pts
2nd Ken Aihara (5) 38pts
3rd Jimmy Brackett (5) 36pts
Our Songkran Road Trip is underway and our first
port-of-call was Rancho Charnvee. This is a beautiful little secret tucked
away in the hills of Khao Yai, and just a 20 minute trip from Pak Chong.
Someone here is living it large with his own private plane and airstrip,
house in the middle of the course and his 40 foot boat in the lake next to
the clubhouse. The owner of Rancho knows how to have fun with his money!
There are 7 golf courses in the immediate area of Pak
Chong and this is one of our favorites. After the 3 hour and 15 minute drive
here from Pattaya, we checked in into the Landmark Hotel and met our 1:00
tee time with ease. Being at an 800ft. elevation, it is a bit cooler than
Pattaya.
Jimmy Brackett didn’t feel the heat and jumped on the
course to shoot his handicap, a cool 36 points. Ken Aihara did 2 better and
marked his card with 38 points as did Brian Prudden, so it was down to the
count back once again. Ken had 18 on the back to Brian’s 19, so it was Mr.
Prudden who claimed the first victory of the trip so far. That’s great
shooting for 3 guys who had never played the course before.
We will stay here through next week so our report will
feature 5 more courses in the area. Buy next week’s paper to read up on Khao
Yai C.C., Mountain Creek, Panorama, Toscana Valley and Bonanza. These are
all beautiful golf courses in the Khao Yai area, so see you next week!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a fun day out. Just call 085 434

Sonu has a scorcher at Greenwood
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, April 9, Green
Valley – Stableford
There were 34 out today so with three divisions the cut
was 6-15, 16-19 and 20+ in division 3. The clouds were rumbling now as the
first group approached the 10th and this continued for another three before
the heavens opened but this was on and off for the next 40 minutes.
![](pic/s14-Jomtieng.jpg)
Iain Walsh and Walter Webber
both made the podium in division 2 at Eastern Star.
In his last game with us before his return to the UK,
Tony Holehouse took pole position in division 3 with 38 points while the
cockney boy Rod Howett was second three points behind and Pal Richars was
third with 32.
In form and playing off 6 still, Kari Kuparinen won the
first division with 38 points, Clive Hall was second one point behind and
Raivo Velsberg came in third place with 37.
Jean Morel beat Steve Godfrey 17/16 on the back nine in
division 2 as they both came in with 34 and Riaz was third on 32.
Near pins went to Jason Cole, Marty Rock, Raivo Velsberg,
Mauri Friman, Ken Priddy and Ian Ryan (2).
Jason Cole, Kari Kuparinen and Marty Rock split the ‘2’s
pot in division 1 while there is a rollover to Green Valleyin division 2.
Wednesday, April 11,
Greenwood - Stableford
After the high season discount for over 20 players, we
arrived at reception to be told the low season now is slightly higher than
three weeks ago when we were here last. We waited for all players to be
crossed off the starting list behind the front desk and with at least 30
minutes talking to the management telling them we are off to Treasure Hills,
they then relented and gave us the low season price again today.
The course is still in good condition and we were
allocated the C and A nines and with under 32 players there were only two
divisions out today.
Sonu from Bombay playing off 14 roared ahead to win
division 1 with 44 points, then there was a confusing scenario with three
players coming in with 38 points, an 18 back nine count back for all of
them, then 13 for all on the back six. After more calculations Raivo
Velsberg was second with 7 points on the back three and then Kari Kuparinen
and Chris Voller after scoring 6 on the back three, 4 on the back two and 2
on the last hole, shared the 3rd place.
Matti Yliato, playing off 19, won the second division
with 34 points with the renowned Australian chef Mark Armstrong beating
Peter Bowden 14/13 on the back nine after they both came in with 31 points.
Two birdies on C6 today and Kari Kuparinen and Chris
Voller were smiling and three rollovers in division 2 to Green Valley on the
23rd in the 2’s.
Friday, April 13, Eastern
Star - Stableford
The first of a nine day nightmare for us golfers; we were
going to cancel today and next week but there were quite a few people who
wanted to play, especially the members of course. We are all gearing
ourselves up for the 16th annual Golden Elephant tour in Hua Hin on the 12th
May, especially last year’s winner Alan Pilkington who fired a 38 today to
win division 1. Chris Voller was second with 33 and Mikael Andersson was two
points behind Chris to finish in third.
Walter Webber was back in the limelight today after
winning division 2 with 38 points, we are pleased to publish his photo after
mistakenly deleting it from the camera after his first ever hole in one at
Emerald with us two weeks ago. Iain Walsh, now living on Eastern Star and a
regular, was second with 36 points and John Coeteze took third with 34.
In the ‘2’s Alan Pilkington birdied the 17th and in
division 2 there are 5 rollovers here on the 27th.
No golf for Cully and Josie Monks this week as Josie has just returned
home after a spell in hospital and all golfers wish her well with a speedy
recovery.

Bowling League
![](pic/s15-PSC%20Bowls.jpg)
200 Bowlers: Ooy & Duanjai.
One week to go and we now know who will win the trophies.
Indiana remains in first place after winning three points from Canada.
Duanjai Wuthrich led Indiana with a 202 game and 502 series. Rich Murphy was
best for Canada with a 528 series.
Second place Green Tree lost a little ground after they
split their match with VFW Post 9876. Ooy Pluemkamon, VFW, bowled the best
series of the day with games of 212, 170 and 186 for a 568 series. Tue
Amphanon, VFW, had an even 500 series and Noodle Russell, Green Tree, bowled
a 503.
Third place Bavaria was the big winner of the week as
they took all four points from Cafô Kronborg. Leo Kretscher led Bavaria with
a 522 series.
Brother D won all four points from Tea Party behind Ken
Johansson’s 511 series, 628 with handicap. Brother D moved up from 7th
to 5th place and Tea Party dropped from 5th
to 6th.
Next week Indiana will bowl against Green Tree and
Bavaria will face off with VFW Post 9876. Only Indiana, Green Tree and
Bavaria are in the trophy race with Indiana leading by two points but all
the trophies are up for grabs. VFW who came up strong in the final weeks is
just one point shy of being in the trophy race.

Super Smith shoots sub-par round at Treasure Hill
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, April
9,Bangprakong – Medal
The start of the annual exodus from Pattaya before
Songkran, combined with the final day of the Master’s tournament, meant that
we had the smallest field of the year so far turning out for the trip to
Bangprakong.
![](pic/s16-Bunker%20golf.jpg)
J.J. looks happy after 3 near
pins, and 2 second places.
The course was in it’s usual great condition, but the
weather was swelteringly hot for the first nine holes, before the breeze
eventually picked up. The pace of the round was slow as the first group was
behind a Thai 5-ball, but there was no chance of getting through, since they
were being held up as well.
Despite the slow round, both Colin Greig and J.J. were in
splendid form, both carding nett 69, but Colin won the day on the count back
1st Colin Greig (8) net 69
2nd J.J. Harney (10) net 69
3rd Nigel Cannon (20) net 73
Near Pins: Colin Greig
Wednesday, April 11,Treasure Hill – Stableford
A larger field of golfers today arrived at the course to
find it pleasantly quiet and the weather conditions seemingly good.
Unfortunately the good weather didn’t last too long, and by the time the
first group reached the 5th hole a thunder storm blew
in. After a delay of about 45 minutes, many golfers struggled to get back in
the groove. Not so for Paul Smith, who shot a tremendous back nine of 4
under par (32), and finished with a score of 71 gross (40 points), to easily
win the day.
John Graham also shot a fine score on his last game
before heading back to the Middle East for another spell of work. Not so
good though for Gordon Melia, also playing his last game before heading off
on the annual migration to the U.K. All the best Gordon, give our regards to
Marion, and we look forward to seeing you both again in the autumn.
1st Paul Smith (3) 40pts
2nd John Graham (10) 35pts
3rd Mark Stanley (12) 34pts
4th Geoff Cox (15) 34pts
Near Pins: Dave Ashman, Colin Greig, William Macey,
and Geoff Cox
Friday, April 13,Rayong C.C. – Stableford
It’s quite some time since we last played at Rayong C.C.
because of the poor condition of the course. Even though today was a public
holiday, the course was quiet and most golfers took advantage of the special
offer for sharing a buggy. It was a pleasant surprise to everyone to find
the condition of the course has improved significantly since our last visit.
There were no holdups on the way round and back at the
Bowling Green everyone agreed that it was worthwhile putting this course
back on the schedule.
Tony Robbins won the day on a count back over JJ, but a
special mention for Les Burns, who almost made a rare visit to the podium.
Keep it up Les, we’ll get that handicap down eventually.
1st Tony
Robbins (12) 33pts
2nd J.J. Harney (11) 33pts
3rd Lee Butler (16) 31pts
4th Les Burns (28) 30pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, and J.J. Harney (3)
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya
3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per
week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and
a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation,
and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For more
information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email [email protected].

Pattaya Cricket Club mourns
passing of an old friend
It was with extreme sadness that the Pattaya Cricket Club
learned of the passing of Elfrado ‘Slasher’ Roberts (Rob to all his mates),
who died two weeks ago from lung cancer, aged 67.
![](pic/s18-Elfrado.jpg)
Elfrado Roberts
(1945-2012)
Rob was a founder member and Team Manager of Pattaya
Cricket Club whose youthful exuberance, commitment and dedication ensured
PCC is the success it is today. He will be fondly remembered for his big
smile, endless story telling of cricketing achievements from yesteryear,
Cajun chicken, sugar cane and of course, his famous square cut.
I particularly remember an instance when as captain of
the opposing side we had 3 gullies, 3 slips and 2 cover points and still Rob
managed to find the boundary where we should have had a fourth slip.
However, he edged the very next ball to be caught behind and was heard
muttering to himself as he trudged dejectedly off the field “how did I get
out to Earl? I will never hear ‘de end of ‘dis”. Earl made sure he did not!
Rob was a hugely popular and influential figure within
the club and his presence, words of wisdom and encouragement will be greatly
missed by all his cricketing family, friends and colleagues.
Our sincere condolences are with his sons Ashley and
Leon.

Top of the Gulf Regatta training ground for Olympic stars
![](pic/s19-TOG-1.jpg)
Keerati Bualong, left, TOG
Regatta regular and Asia Pacific Laser Champion, is set to represent
Thailand at London 2012 after taking part in an upcoming Olympic Qualifying
event in May.
Asia’s largest multi-class regatta, the Top of the Gulf
Regatta, will take place in Thailand 4–8 May 2012 at Ocean Marina Yacht
Club, Jomtien Beach, Pattaya. Eight years young, the 2012 Regatta will
attract over 600 sailors and 300+ boats and boards, to take part in what has
become a ‘Festival of Sail’ in the Gulf of Thailand, and a key date on the
Asian sailing calendar.
Since its inception, the Top of the Gulf Regatta (TOG
Regatta) has endeavoured to provide a sailing opportunity for Thai and
regional sailors to compete against international sailors of the highest
calibre. To this end, each year the Regatta welcomes national, Asian, World
Champions and Olympians to take part in a varied fleet of dinghies,
multihulls and keelboats.
“Our aim since the beginning has been to organise an
international-standard yacht race in the Gulf of Thailand, in-line with ISAF
(International Sailing Federation) rules, and with international race
management,” explained William J Gasson, Chairman of the TOG Regatta
Organising Committee.
![](pic/s19-TOG-2.jpg)
Noppakao Poonpat went from
success at the TOG Regatta to win consecutive IODA World Optimist titles.
“For Thai juniors, we incorporated the Thailand Optimist
Championships as part of the Regatta and now provide an opportunity for Thai
youngsters to compete alongside international sailors and develop their
skills,” added Gasson.
Success of the TOG Regatta’s approach can be seen in the
number of Thai sailors sharpening their skills at the Regatta and going on
to great sailing achievements.
After a 12 year hiatus, Thai sailors are set to represent
their country again at the Olympics. Current Asian Champion, Keerati Bualong
has taken part in many TOG Regatta’s and following success in the May
Olympic Qualifying event in Germany, will represent Thailand in the Laser
Standard in the London 2012 Olympics. He will be joined by fellow TOG
Regatta regular Kamonwan Chanyim, who will compete in the Laser Radial.
Other TOG Regatta successes include Noppakao Poonpat,
Chaninart Poolsirikot and the Vongtim brothers, Damrongsak and Kitsada.
Noppakao Poonpat went from winning the Thailand Optimist
Championships at the TOG Regatta to win consecutive IODA World titles in
2009 and 2010; Chaninart Poolsirikot was recently crowned Optimist Champion
(girls) at the 2012 Asian Sailing Championship; and Damrongsak and Kitsada
have won national and Asian championships in the Hobie 16 Class and made it
into the top 10 world rankings.
While Thailand and Asia are producing top level sailing
talent, the region has become a magnet for international sailing events,
hosting the Volvo Ocean Race, Extreme Sailing Series and the World Match
Racing Tour. And this year, for the first time, the Neil Pryde Racing Series
– a series of one-design windsurfing events around the world – will make a
stop in Thailand as part of the TOG Regatta.
“Bringing the Neil Pryde Racing Series to Thailand
further cements the Top of the Gulf Regatta’s position as a leading sailing
event in Asia, offering diverse classes for sailors of all backgrounds, and
bringing international sailing talent together for top quality competition,”
commented Gasson.
The 2012 TOG Regatta will see 13 competitive classes race
in the Gulf of Thailand, including some of the top 40-footers in Asia and a
record one-design Platu class competing for the prestigious Coronation Cup.
2012 Classes include: IRC 1, IRC 2, IRC 3, IRC 4 Cruising, Sports Boats,
Platu (racing in the Coronation Cup), Ocean Multihulls, F18’s, Open Beach
Multihulls, Single-handed monohull dinghies, double-handed monohull
dinghies, and Optimist (racing in the Thailand Optimist Championship).

Bashundhara reclaim Chiang Mai Cricket Sixes Cup
![](pic/s20-Cricket%20Sixes-1.jpg)
Bashundara Cricketers: Cup
Champions 2012.
Justin Moseley
The finals day of the San Miguel Chiang Mai International
Cricket Sixes on April 7 at the Gymkhana Club saw the Cup won by the
Bashundhara Cricketeers, the Bowl by the Divine Felons, the Shield by
Yarrambat, the Plate by the Darwin Dilettantes and the Spoon by Sa Pa.
In an exciting Cup Final the Bashundhara Cricketeers,
undefeated all week, batted first and produced superb sixes against
Darjeeling, one of three teams to have competed in all 25 Sixes tournaments.
Excellent fielding by Darjeeling, including two brilliant boundary catches
against the sun by Dougie Griebenouw, held the Cricketeers to 78.
![](pic/s20-Cricket%20Sixes-2.jpg)
Yarrambat: Shield Winners
2012.
As Darjeeling went in to bat, Dougie Griebenouw again
excelled with 31 retired, but the accurate bowling of the Cricketeers saw
the batting collapse, leaving the Bangladeshi team to go on to reclaim the
Cup that they won in 2009 and 2010. It would have been most fitting if
Darjeeling’s 25 years of supporting the tournament had ended in lifting the
Cup, but it was not to be.
Earlier in the day, the first Cup semi-final involved the
Bashundhara Cricketeers and the Lords Taverners. The Bangladeshis lost an
early wicket and good wicketkeeping and fielding restricted scoring, but
wides in the final over gifted them runs to score 77. The Taverners
responded quite well, but accurate bowling and a particularly acrobatic
boundary catch by Sohel saw them fail to get close to the score set.
The second Cup semi was between defending Cup holders the
Redlands Tigers and Darjeeling. The Tigers started well with a six from Paul
Bonney off the first ball, but good fielding limited the score to 76. The
Tigers also opened their defence well with a great caught and bowled by
Trent Conwell, but great batting from Darjeeling’s Brian Sholtz and James
Grisdale meant the game went down to the final ball, from which they scored
1 to win.
A very wet early morning pitch from heavy overnight rain
greeted the final day of the 25th anniversary tournament. The first game of
the day was the Bowl semi-final between the English Zoombar Drifters (who
have attended all 25 Sixes) and the Kiwi Divine Felons. The Felons batted
first and, benefitting from indifferent fielding, made a score of 84
including two retirements, which the Drifters failed to reach.
The second Bowl semi-final was an English battle between
the Armadillos and the Gloucestershire Gipsies. The Armadillos made a fine
72, including a retirement from Sam Gilmour, and went on to win after a
spirited run chase by the Gipsies was thwarted by good bowling in the final
over by Gilmour.
In the Bowl Final the English Armadillos, after good
running and batting (including Ian Gilmour retired) and a fine effort by
Graham Dogget ended 9 runs short of the 79 (including Jerry Marr retired)
made by the Kiwi Divine Felons, who had batted well all week.
The first Shield semi-final was between the English
Surrey Vagrants and Australian Yarrambat. The Vagrants’ made a great batting
start as Jerry Hinds and Bjorn Mordt smashed sixes, but they were both
caught in super boundary catches by Dylan Foster and Troy Harvey, and
further good fielding restricted the score to 68-3. Yarrambat responded with
23 in the first over with great hitting from Daniel Shaw and, despite fine
bowling in the last over from Strickland, went on to win.
In the second Shield semi, great fielding (including
great boundary catches by Cheggers and van Wyk) saw the Australian Clifton
Hill Straycats restrict the Chiang Mai Warriors to 38 with the loss of 5
wickets, a score they overcame despite some good fielding and losing a
wicket from the first ball. The all-Australian Shield Final saw the Clifton
Hill Straycats score 78 after great sixes by van Wyk (retired on 31) and
nifty running; they could have scored more, as overthrows cost runs but good
outfielding made up for it. Yarrambat then gave a fine batting display
(including Troy Harvey retired) and scored a four of the penultimate ball to
win the game and the Shield to cheers all around the ground for this most
friendly team.
In the Plate semi-finals, the Darwin Dilettantes scored
86 against Blythswood, who responded well (including Shaz Newaz retired),
but good bowling (only 4 extras) ensured they did not reach the target set.
The other Plate semi saw the Moonshine Maythais score 81, which proved too
much for Almar.
In the Plate Final the Moonshine Maythais batted first
and reached a respectable 74-2, but a wicket by Smash was not enough to
prevent the Darwin Dilettantes from winning.
In the Spoon Final, Sa Pa lost a wicket in the first over
but recovered well to beat the local Gymkhana Cavaliers who batted first to
score 50, leaving the Vietnamese the good chance they needed of scoring
more.
All proceeds from the Chiang Mai International Cricket
Sixes go towards promoting the game at the junior level in Thailand. The
annual Pattaya International Cricket Sixes will take place later in the year
at a date still to be announced.
