Pattaya Sports Club
Bowling League
Brother D maintain their first place lead
after winning three points from Canada. Bowling was not very good on lanes 7
and 8 and only Tue Pettae managed a 514 series which is below her average.
Christian - the only 200
bowler this week.
Bavaria had a bad week losing all four points to Indiana
and dropping from second to third place. Lane problems resulted in poor
bowling on lanes 13 and 14 and the bowlers had to move to lanes 5 and 6 to
complete their match. Christian bowling as a Pacer had no problems as he had
a 203 game and 537 series. Indiana moved out of last place and into sixth.
Green Tree and Cafô Kronborg split their match with each
team getting two points.
VFW Post 9876 moved from third to second place after
winning all four points from Mitt In 2012. Ooy Pluemkamon bowled a 533
series and Tui Amphanon had a 502 for VFW.
Pattaya Sports Club Fishing Report
Terry with his prize catch.
Dene Mundy
Six of us set out on our first trip of the month on 5th
July in relatively good conditions, with an overcast sky, light winds and no
rain. Nevertheless fishing conditions were not easy as we encountered medium
to large swells in the morning which abated as the day progressed.
Solly landed a 3 kilo coral
trout.
Terry, Charlie’s nephew visiting from South Africa,
succumbed to the conditions and did not participate in the action for
several hours. However, he bounced back later and caught the largest fish
for the day. Together, they also had the most fish to take home, well over
10 kilos. Dang, as usual, did well and her take home bag was only slightly
less.
Yours truly had a bad day with only 3–4 kilos and overall
we all enjoyed the day. Jeff was moderately successful.
On our second outing on July 14 we again had six
participants on a day with good conditions and a moderate swell. It was our
best day’s fishing for some as we all caught at least one big grey (eleven
in total) around 2–3 kilos each. They were not the best catch of day
however, as Solly landed a 3 kilo coral trout which was voted by all as the
best fish, quality and size, caught this year.
Dang caught the biggest grouper for the year and together
with Solly took home over 20 kilos. Not bad Eh! The best of us had to make
do with around 4 to 8 kilos. Overall it was a great day!
Dang, pictured here with Jeff
and his large grey cod.
Only four of us participated in the trip on July 19. The
conditions were the best, weather-wise, for a number of trips, with overcast
skies, light wind and for most of the time light swells.
The fish cooperated too and we all had good bag catches
of at least 6–8 kilos of our usual yellow tail, grouper, and snapper. Good
sized pla dang were prolific also.
My take home catch, the best for the day (only because
Dang was not aboard) was around 15+ kilos after cleaning and was aided by a
few (stress few) caught by the skipper and one nice 2ฝ kilo big grey, the
only large fish caught this trip.
John O’Neil and 5 buddies chartered the boat for a trip
on July 6. I have few details of the excursion other than no large fish were
caught and their bag catches were somewhat small. Nevertheless, I am told
all enjoyed the day and John (and 1 or 2 others) are planning to come on a
future monthly trip. Perhaps the regulars might be able to teach them some
tricks.
Next trip is scheduled for 28 July, the fifth for the
month. I have only 4 bookings to date and hope for 1 or 2 more. August trips
revert to our usual monthly schedule and are as follows: Saturday, August 4
& 18, and Thursday, August 9 & 23. Please contact me on 081 862 6279 for
bookings.

Takeshi & Dobbsy sparkle at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Monday, July 16, Crystal Bay B & A – Stableford
The Growling Swan was buzzing this Monday morning as our
biggest field so far of 28 golfers prepared for the trip down Sukhumvit to
the ever popular Crystal Bay Golf Course. Peter Grey and Andrew Allen were
“chomping at the bit” as this was to be their first ever game with an
official handicap and their main objective of the day was to avoid winning
the now famous Compass Cap. There were many new faces and a few old faces
returning so welcomes were handed out to the following: Bent Agerbo & Peer
Bruun from Denmark; Bob Akapita from Gove, N.T., Australia; Paul (Muncha)
Moloney from West Africa/Australia; Paul Blackshaw & Alan Riddell, formerly
of Australia but now residing in Pattaya; Adam Rochd from Bangkok; Scott
Leszinsky from Canada (USA?) but now residing in Pattaya; and Ken Bernek’s
wife Wendy who has now joined her husband in retirement.
Takeshi Hakozaki, Peter Grey
& Jerry Dobbs.
We were sadly saying farewell to new PSC members Vince
Romeo and Tony Alcorn who will shortly be returning to Australia.
Three minivans were required on this occasion and we
departed the G.S. a couple of minutes after our scheduled time of 8.30 am
and after a 50 minute journey in our van which unfortunately had no
air-conditioning (later to be fixed) we arrived at the practically deserted
golf course.
There was time for a quick chip & putt for some and then
we were invited to commence with B & A nines being the allotted combination.
The sky was blue and there was a gentle breeze as our first group, a
three-ball teed off 15 minutes early at 9.45 am and the golf course was
looking terrific. It wasn’t too hot and we weren’t really held up by the
Thai group in front as we completed the front nine (B) in just over two
hours.
We were an all Aussie three-ball and fairly fierce
competitors which managed to bring out some good golf on occasions and we
all managed to join the “Birdie Club” with Mike “Hunter” Gosden being the
last of us to become a member.
Graham Buckingham, Peter
Blackburn & Fred Land.
With a fairly brief drink stop before the A4 tee we
proceeded and finished the full round in four hours & seven minutes. I had
read reports that this golf course was not up to its usual high standard but
I have to report that on this day it was in excellent shape with lush
fairways and beautifully prepared greens. It will certainly remain on our
monthly schedule as it has for about a year now.
We had 4 golfers playing without official handicaps so
once more the Callaway scoring system was used for them and they were
allocated a grade of their own. In addition there were 2 grades with A Grade
for handicaps of 0 to 18 and B Grade for handicaps of 19 and over. We had
rewards for nearest the pins on all the par threes, one of them kindly
sponsored by Mike Gosden and also prizes for longest first putts on A9 & B9.
Playing on his ‘home course’, Takeshi Hakozaki once again
took out first place in A Grade with a fine 41 points, 3 points ahead of
yours truly in second place. In a count back for third & fourth spots with 2
golfers on 37 points, Bob Akapita (21 points on B9) finished just ahead of
Mike Gosden (20 points on B9).
In B Grade last start Compass Cap winner Jerry Dobbs went
from boiled lollies to chocolates and won with 35 points and Graham
Buckingham finished second with 32 points. In another count back for third &
fourth spots with both on 31 points, Bernie McCart (18 points on B9) just
pipped Max Bracegirdle (14 points on B9).
A Flight (0-18)
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 41pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (12) 38pts
3rd Bob Akapita (17) 37pts
4th Mike Gosden (11) 37pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Jerry Dobbs (23) 35pts
2nd Graham Buckingham (23) 32pts
3rd Bernie McCart (31) 31pts
4th Max Bracegirdle (24) 31pts
Callaway Flight
1st Paul Moloney 36pts
2nd Vince Romeo 31pts
Near Pins: A5– Max Bracegirdle; A8 –Takeshi Hakozaki;
B4 – Paul Moloney; B6 – Martin Todd
Long Putts: A9 – Wendy Bernek; B9 – Mike Gosden
As mentioned earlier Peter Grey was determined not to win
the Compass Cap (awarded for the worst score of the day) at his very first
attempt but alas, despite his beloved Sydney Swans having a great win a day
earlier he was unable to emulate their feat and took out the award in grand
style. Hunter had returned from his trip up country and paraded Deefa the
Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very generous
Growling Swan crew. Many thanks to Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek who looked
after & fed Deefa in Hunter’s absence and rumour has it Deefa was more than
comfortable in his own bed overlooking Pattaya Beach.
Back at The Growling Swan afterwards many of us stayed
for several hours and mine host Peter Grey, being the good sport that he is
wore the Compass Cap well into the evening and I’m quite sure he enjoyed
every minute of it. The beer was “Aussie cold” and there was plenty of it &
it was great to catch up with Bent Agerbo again who continued to sing the
praises of our new Golfing Outlet.
Thursday, July 19, Burapha, A & B – Stableford
We were just one short of a full field of 24 for The
Growling Swan’s first ever outing to the classy Burapha Golf Course and I
for one was very much looking forward to the experience having not played
there for about four years.
Before departure we welcomed newcomer Fred Land from
Portsmouth, England and good to see Tom Parry of Pattaya join us again. It
was sadly time to once more wish Aussie Bob Akapita a fond farewell with the
knowledge that it will only be a few weeks before he is back with us again.
With the assistance of several car owners we were able to
make do with just one minivan and we headed off right on time at 8.30 am &
arrived at Burapha just 30 minutes later. There seemed to be a fair amount
of activity although as soon as we were ready we were told that we could
commence, playing the A nine first & sensibly we sent our only three-ball
off first at 9.30 am which was 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
We trusted Walter & Mashi with the job of “planting” the
nearest the pin & longest first putt markers. Dear Walter unfortunately
omitted to place the marker for the longest first putt on A9 but Toddy in
our second group came to the rescue and used half of his scorecard to “do
the business”.
After driving through a few drops of rain on the way to
the course the skies were overcast but we had no need to worry as although
it was humid with not much wind the weather was perfect for golf. The golf
course was superb in all aspects with lush fairways and perfect greens which
were mostly very slick and only too ready to trap anyone who did not
correctly judge the borrow and pace. It was certainly “millionaire’s golf”
on this wonderful layout and there were no holdups all day with the full
round being completed in three hours & fifty five minutes. A thoroughly
enjoyable round of golf and we most certainly will be back next month.
With the good field we were able to have 2 grades with A
Grade for handicaps of 0 to 17 and B Grade for handicaps of 18 and over. We
had rewards for nearest the pins on all the par threes, with three of them
kindly sponsored by Walter Baechli and also prizes for longest first putts
on A9 & B9 kindly donated by Martin Todd.
Fred Land, playing with us for the first time, took an
obvious liking to the course and won the A Grade with a terrific 44 points;
5 points clear of Paul Avery who had a welcome return to form and finished
in second place. On 36 points came Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek in third
spot with the consistent Bob Akapita fourth 1 point further back.
The winner of B Grade was Graham Buckingham (16 point
back nine, 9 points on last 6 holes & 6 points on last 3 holes) with 35
points on a count back from Walter Baechli (16 point back nine, 9 points on
last 6 holes & 4 points on last 3 holes). Another count back with both
golfers on 34 points saw Bent Agerbo (18 point back nine) finish third ahead
of Tom Cotton (16 point back nine) in fourth place.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Fred Land (12) 44pts
2nd Paul Avery (11) 39pts
3rd Ken Bernek (16) 36pts
4th Bob Akapita (17) 35pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Graham Buckingham (23) 35pts
2nd Walter Baechli (18) 35pts
3rd Bent Agerbo (19) 34pts
4th Tom Cotton (20) 34pts
Near Pins: A3– Mashi Kaneta; A6 –Fred Land; B3 – Max
Bracegirdle; B8 – Martin Todd
Long Putts: A9 – Mike Gosden; B9 – Ken Bernek
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was Big Ken Bernek’s wife Wendy who took the
award in good spirit & humour. Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who of course
collected many donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan
crew. It was then back to The Growling Swan where many of us conducted post
mortems on our games whilst enjoying the cold beers in an extremely friendly
and humorous environment.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 080 635 1386 or email

Lynch shoots low round at Treasure Hill
PSC 116th Monthly Golf Tournament
Report Nigel Cannon/
Photos William Macey
Friday, July 20, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham made Treasure Hill the venue
for the July PSC monthly golf tournament – and what a popular decision it
was with 82 competitors, including 13 ladies and a number of new faces. One
of the regular ladies Arisa Hennings was playing her last PSC event for a
while as she leaves for Canada for a ‘happy event’ shortly.
John Hall, long drive A
flight.
The course has improved considerably over the last year
or so and even though we had a 30 minute spell of heavy rain at the start’
it soon dried out and with it being cooler it was perfect golfing weather.
This made the rounds a little longer than the norm but there were no
complaints.
We were the only players there today and the attention by
the Manager and the staff – including the caddies –all added to the day.
This month it was Joe and PSC Treasurer Bob Lindborg who
welcomed members as they registered.
Treasure Hill is regarded by most as a tough track and so
it was today - by most! But not for the low gross winner – teacher Doug
Lynch – who has a handicap of 3 and came in with a gross 74 despite putting
his ball in the water on 1 hole! No photo as Doug was not at the
presentation.
Countdown was required for ‘A’ Flight – playing medal
from the white tees – with both Philip Page (11) and Brian Holden (6) both
having a net 75 with Philip declared the winner.
Sim Davis.
‘B’ Flight from the yellow tees saw the best Stableford
score of the day from Michael Beresford (18) with 38 points.
‘C’ Flight needed a count back as both Henry Wong (22)
and Brian Price (20) secured 36 points with Henry getting the nod.
The ladies flight saw past Treasure Hill caddy number 5!
also the better half of Colin, i.e. Sim Davis (H/cap 24), coming in with 37
points.
On the subject of Lewiinski’s, once again Colin and his
staff provided another first class buffet to suit all tastes and that,
together with excellent service from the ‘Lewiinski’s Lovelies’, made a
perfect end to a fine day.
An exception to the normal routine came when a golf bag
was given to Colin by Bob St. Aubin to raffle. All the income, 7,500 baht,
was for the benefit of Baan Jing Jai.
Presentation time – Nigel introduced Joe who expressed
his appreciation to all players today and echoed the comments regarding the
buffet.
Arisa Hennings, left, winner
of the golf bag.
After the presentation Nigel then announced the winners –
Joe presented the prizes, which was followed by the lucky draw. Finally this
month’s 50/50 winner was Brian Neal. Full results are on the PSC web-site
and on the club notice board.
The next monthly is on Friday 20th
August at Eastern Star and sign-up sheets are at the PSC Office.
A special monthly charity tournament has been scheduled
for Friday 21st September at Siam Plantation. It will
be a shotgun start at 1230 and the fee will include green fee, caddy fee,
buggy, entry fee, prizes and a buffet at the course. Sign-up sheets will be
at the PSC office at the beginning of August when members will be required
to pay as they sign up. The field is limited to 120 players.

Booth claims the claret jug
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Last week’s report started off with a TRGG vote of thanks
to two of the golf courses we played recently. This week I should like to
give my personal thanks to Fergus Brennan and all the golfers who played on
Monday 16th July at Century Chonburi for their help and support in a
situation that could have had much more serious consequences than it in fact
finished.
Jim Cleaver - winner at
Century Chonburi
Seamus Farrell and I were travelling with Mod Chaviraksa
to the course when she was rammed from behind, sorry I shall rephrase that,
when Mod’s car was rammed from behind by a pickup truck. Seamus received a
bad cut to his head and I had a whack in the back and a whiplash injury. Mod
was ok but her car received a terminal injury to its back end. I can assure
you it was an experience I should not like to repeat in a hurry.
Anyway, when we contacted all the other golfers they all
came to our assistance and lent their support which was much appreciated.
After a lengthy delay most of us carried on to the golf course and
eventually managed to play a round. Special mention to Mod’s friend Amphan
North who came all the way out from Pattaya to help her sort out everything,
a good friend indeed.
It was my first visit to Century Chonburi and I have to
say it is certainly value for money, with plenty of interesting holes, and I
look forward to playing it again when I am a little less shook up.
Jim Cleaver playing off a thirteen handicap took the
honours with 36 points with Ted Senior (13) in second on 33 after beating
Jeff Bunn (6) on count back.
David Booth, left, winner at
Crystal Bay.
Tuesday 17th July proved a lot less eventful for our
visit to Green Valley and Jim McNeill (15) walked the competition with a
magnificent 41 points. Jeff Bunn went one better than the previous day and
shot 35, playing off seven, to take second place and Ito Akitoshi (8) took
third with 33 points.
Thursday 19th July was our usual visit to Phoenix where
we took on the Mountain and Ocean courses and Jim McNeill, still playing off
a fifteen handicap (I guess the previous results were late going into the
computer), mopped up the opposition after returning with 40 points to again
take first place. Roger Wilkinson (13) was second with 36 points, winning on
count back from ‘Mr. Consistent’ Jeff Bunn (7).
On Saturday 21st July the weather was beautiful and
Crystal Bay (C and B courses) was the venue for our very own Open
Championship. David Booth, playing off twelve, won the Claret Jug in a
playoff, well on count back actually, from Jim Cleaver (13), both returning
37 points. Max Scott (2) was third with 35.

New boy Gilroy is tops at Bangpra
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, July 16, Green
Valley – Stableford
There were seven groups out today and the cut was 8-20 in
division 1 and the best score came in division 2 with Iain Walsh winning
with 39 points. Chris Slota took second in the division on 35 and the joint
organiser with Andy Baber over the past 10 days , Countback Burnie, was
third with 33.
The new owners of Siam Cats,
John and Kiao Steel.
Mikael Andersson won division 1 with 36 points, Colin
James was second one point behind and Marty Rock took third with 30 points.
There were no ‘2;’s in division 1 and Colin James birdied
the 12th for the only one in division 2.
Near pins went to John Lay, Chris Voller (2), Paul
Hobson, Rod Howett and Colin James.
Wednesday, July 18, Bangpra - Stableford
A favourite course with many people, but we only visit
here in the low season due to the late tee times we are offered from
November onwards, which does not appeal to our group.
A new addition to the group and playing off 16 was
Russell Gilroy who won division 1 with 36 points. The ex London black cabbie
driver, Mike Chatt, beat Bruce Gardner and Chris Voller on a 20/15/12 count
back for second place. Chris was due a podium position after 21 points on
the front nine but this all fell through.
Chris Slota’s 33 points topped division 2 scores with
Roar Berger in second place two points behind and the cockney boy beat the
Aussie boy 14/12 on the back nine as Rod Howett was smiling and Chris Reed
was not after both scored 29 points.
In the ‘2’s, Chris Voller birdied the par three second to
scoop the pot while there was a rollover in division 2 to Pattana.
Near pins were claimed by Mike Chatt, Harry Vincenzi (3),
Mark Armstrong, Roar Berger and Colin James.
Many thanks to Andy Baber and Burnie Sinclair for running
Jomtien Golf over the last 12 days - thanks lads!
There are now new owners to Siam Cats, the Jersey boy,
John Steel, and his new wife Kiao. There is free coffee and tea for all
golfers on golfing days.
Friday, July 20, Eastern Star - Stableford
As we drove towards Baan Chang the skies were becoming
gloomier and more threatening but on the first tee the first group of seven
teed off and for the next four holes it was a cool and casual round with a
few dark clouds brewing in the distance. At the short par 4 fifth however,
the drizzle started and became more consistent and by the time the first
group reached the 8th tee it was time to stop.
After a substantial delay we decided to call in quits and
an 18 hole rain-check was given to all golfers on the day. Many thanks
Eastern Star!
While I was back in the UK there was a small reunion with
a few of Jomtien Golfers meeting up in John Sewell’s daughter’s Thai
restaurant, Thaiphoon on Wandsworth Bridge Road, a great night was had by
all. Thanks John!

Big hitters excel at Pattana
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
On Monday, 16th July the Pattaya Golf Society travelled
to Pattana to play a stableford competition on the B and C nines. The course
was in excellent condition and for the competition the white tees were used.
This makes the course very long and it always gives the lower handicappers a
nose start. However it gives the golfers the challenge they all seek at
sometime in the month and makes for a tense competition.
So it turned out, the longer hitters in the field all
found themselves near the top with Masashi Iizumi continuing his good run
with a well crafted 31 points to share third place with Icelander Kerry
Jonsson, playing his first golf with the group in almost ten years. In
second place with 34 points was Wichai Tananusorn and the winner was Fred
Land, in the frame again, with 35 points.
Wichai also recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on
the long B7.
The Booby Bevy went to Paul Brett for the day’s lowest
score and he also benefitted from Rabbi’s free beer draw. Some guys have all
the luck! But it takes more than luck to win at Pattana off the white tees
so well done Fred!
Aussie rules at St Andrew’s
On Wednesday, 18th July the Pattaya Golf Society went to
St Andrew’s to play a stableford competition on the course which was in
excellent condition with slowish greens as the only downside.
As with many courses, accuracy off the tee is the secret
to a good round and the straighter hitters inevitably filled the places with
Dave Edwards again coming good after an erratic week to start the month and
posting 33 points with a third place finish on his first visit to the track.
One point ahead on 34 was Leroy Blasi again savouring every inch of what is
becoming a favourite course for him. The winner was the canny Aussie Robbie
Taylor who managed to beguile the course out of 37 points for an emphatic
win. He also recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on the fifth.
Kerry Jonsson was running hot after nine holes with 22
points under his belt but the wheels came off on the back nine to give him
the Booby Bevy for the largest split and Fred Land took Rabbi’s free beer
draw back at the presentation in Soi Buakhao.
Grimes cleans up
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Crystal Bay on
Friday, 20th July to play a stableford competition on the popular course,
under brooding skies and with the occasional distant rumble of thunder, but
the day stayed cool and dry after the first hole, making for a good
competition on the B and C nines.
All the usual suspects were there and great things were
expected of the straight hitters in the field. Well then, how did Rabbi and
Mr Len manage a share of third place with Dave Edwards? They applied
themselves well throughout, that’s how, with Rabbi recording his best of the
year, and they both recorded 35 points to join the current form man at the
Elephant Bar in third.
In second place was Masanori Takano with a well crafted
36 points, leaving the winner Ken Grimes well ahead on forty points. A week
in Bali has obviously left him on a Bali High!
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to
Robbie Taylor after his valiant efforts to avoid “hero-to-zero” status met
with no success.
The Boss’s free beer draw was enjoyed by Kerry Jonsson, a
rare moment of satisfaction for the Icelander after a tough day at Crystal
Bay.

Evans above – Daryl sails home at Riverside
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Tuesday’s top four with
one of Bert’s finest.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 17, Bangpakong - Stableford
Now this is a course that if it was a little bit
closer we would play much more than we do. Only the sheer distance puts
it as an irregular visit, as drivers do not mind going to most of the
closer venues. The drive there is not particularly onerous, but after a
round in the sun, and the heavy traffic at that time of the day, the
drive back is not fun.
However, every now and then we do like to treat
ourselves, so a little earlier than normal it was into cars and a slow
gentle drive up to Bangpakong Riverside Golf Club. This course is a wide
and open layout located around the Bangpakong River, or at least
includes some elements. It is also windy, as most courses by water are,
and on this day it was blowing as usual.
The open layout is one of those in which you can hit
the ball hard, follow it and hit it again. The long hitters were going
to have a major advantage, so we played off the yellow tees, which
despite being of that colour were still close on 6,400 yards. If you hit
the ball in the rough, there was a fair degree of difficulty, but it was
usually playable, and if you were wildly off line you could go ‘OB’ or
even in the water.
Still, all in all, this is a course where you can go
and play on great fairways and have a fine day out. Only negative on the
day was that the greens were very slow, and getting to the hole was a
real problem. After playing Bangpra the previous Tuesday the difference
was really noticeable, however as the score started to come in it was
obvious that many golfers had found putting no problem, nor playing a
good round either.
The Restaurant here provides really good food, at a
price. So it was that most players simply scooted out to the cars and
started out on the long journey back. Some of us however had a bite to
eat and a soft drink to put the fluids back in the body.
Suffice to say that the drive back was a pain in the
‘you know what’. The roads were packed and it seemed to be one of those
drives that seems as if all the cars are backed up and all lanes full.
It was a pleasure to finally get back to Bert’s and have a cold soda
water, then onto the results.
We only had one flight and you had to score really
well to be in the picture. The winner with 44 points was Daryl Evans, a
really excellent round. Then we had a three-way count back on 40 points
that saw Brian Parish in second, Dick Warberg in third and Mike O’Brien
in fourth. We had a three-way count back on 39 points that saw Graham
Buckingham in fifth and George King and Henry Wong missing out.
Worthy of a mention was John Harrison with 38 points
and two near pins who shot his best round of the year. Well played all!

Edgar gets red hot
with the short stick
PSC Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, July 16, Royal
Lakeside – Stableford
Today was definitely worth the slightly longer trip than
normal, as we arrived at Royal Lakeside to find the course in truly
excellent condition. Before the course was revamped it was a regular
occurrence for someone to score 40 points or more, but nowadays it’s unusual
for anyone to better their handicap. With the addition of a lot more
bunkers, contoured greens and changing the layout of several holes, bringing
the water much more into play, the course now presents a tough test of golf.
Paul Edgar behind bars after
scoring 23 points on the back-nine at Emerald.
Lee Butler certainly managed to better his handicap
coming in with an impressive score of 41 points to win the day by a
comfortable five point margin, thereby earning himself an instant cut in the
process!
1st Lee Butler (14) 41pts
2nd Barry Murnin (15) 35pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 35pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Tony Robbins, John Graham
and William Macey
Wednesday, July 18, The Emerald – Stableford
A good turnout today for our regular visit to this always
popular course; coincidentally located in Ban Chang. The course was empty
and in good shape apart from the greens on the back nine which had been
recently cored, making putting a bit of a lottery. If you have a lottery,
then there’s usually a winner, and today it was Paul Edgar who managed to
one putt five greens on the back nine holes, scoring 23 points in the
process. Paul’s total of 41 points made him the comfortable winner on the
day and also brought him into contention for the Golfer of the Month.
1st Paul Edgar (19) 41pts
2nd John Graham (10) 36pts
3rd Peter Habgood (19) 35pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Gerry Cooney and Paul Edgar
Friday, July 20, Green Valley - Stableford
We managed to leave one golfer at the Bowling Green
today, the unfortunate one being Richard, who decided to go to the bank and
didn’t tell anyone he was playing!
Green Valley isn’t the best value for money around at the
moment, at 1,300 Baht green fee and caddy, but the course is in excellent
condition, so most players felt it was worth it.
We started promptly at 11a.m. with no other golfers in
front or behind, but unfortunately it started raining lightly on the 4th and
didn’t stop till the 18th. The rain didn’t affect the scores though with
Peter Habgood returning to form, scoring 39 points, finishing just one point
ahead of Barry Murnin.
1st Peter Habgood (19) 39pts
2nd Barry Murnin (15) 38pts
3rd Paul Edgar (18) 35pts
Near Pins: John Graham, Gerry Cooney and Reg Smart.
The race for the Golfer of the Month title is close
between the three front runners, John Graham, Barry Murnin, and Paul Edgar
with only 3 points separating them. If Lee Butler can stay off the beer and
fit a few more games in, he’ll also be in contention.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society
who now play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhao. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For
more information call Dave on 087 146 9978, email [email protected].

Johann on fire at Phoenix
PSC Blue Moose Golf
Dale Murphy, left, with Johann
Eschmann.
Monday, July 16, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
Few details were forthcoming from the Monday outing,
though everyone agrees that the course is in very playable condition. Dale
Murphy led the pack with 37 points, with regular visitor Kevin Worl slipping
into second place.
Kevin Worl.
Everyone gathered at Caddyshack II for a couple of
refreshments before heading back to the Blue Moose.
Wednesday, July 18, Phoenix - Stableford
The Moose golfers had a 7:44 tee-off at Phoenix on this
fine Wednesday. Conditions were very favorable as evidenced by newcomer
Johann Eschmann’s 42 stableford points. Continuing in top form, Dale Murphy
shot 2 under his handicap and placed second with 38 points. Mark Campbell
also had 38 points, but had to settle for third place after the count back.
Nobody hit the green on the designated par 3 – Ocean 7.
An excellent buffet awaited the players upon their return
to the Blue Moose, courtesy of Bluey’s “going back to work and hating to
leave Thailand” party. Next week the monthly trophy will be fought for at
Burapha.

Newell & Duthie conquer Kabinburi

A Flight
1 st Ian Smith
(12) 39pts

B Flight
1st Mick
Beresford (18) 39pts
2nd Jerry
Garcia (21) 33pts
3rd Ken
LivingDolls (20) 32pts
Thirty-six golfers set out with us today for our regular
Monday venue at Rayong Green Valley. This is a strong turnout for low season
and we were rewarded with stunning weather after last week’s rains. The
course was in tip-top shape and they are finally just about finished with
the new cart paths. There has been lots of maintenance here of late and the
hard work of the greenskeeping staff is starting to show.
Front Row: Kabinburi winners
John McHugh, Tony Duthie and Bob Newell.
Visiting Australians Ian Smith and Bob Watson continued
their good form this Monday as they both carded best-of-show 39’s with
gentleman Ian squeaking by on “the dreaded count back” for first place.
Local Canadian Grant Cadell kept us in the frame for Pattaya’s finest
golfers with 38 points. Another local Mashi Kaneta was just out with his 38
and also losing out on that cruel count back.
In the B Flight, it was good to see our big buddy with a
big heart Mikey Frizzell back in town (yes, Lefty is his uncle) to add to
the high jinks with Ken from Living Dolls (the best go-go on Walking Street)
joining us and taking 3rd place
honours. Jerry (Grateful he’s not dead) Garcia was second just behind Micky
Beresford with a stomping 39 points, just as good as the low handicappers.
Well done Mick! But why does Dale torment you so?
Tuesday, July 17 &
Wednesday July 18 - Kabinburi Sport Club (white tees)
Day 1 (Singles)
1 st John
McHugh (10) 37pts
2 nd Simon
Philbrook (6) 35pts
3 rd Rich
Moore (15) 34pts
Day 2 (2-Man BB Rainbow)
1 st Bob
Newell & Tony Duthie 42pts
2 nd Ed
Wyckoff & Rich Moore 40pts
Road Trip time once again and this event took place just
2 hours 10 minutes up the 331-304 to Kabinburi Sports Club. This is a very
well maintained course with perfect fairways, huge greens and ever-improving
bunkers, and grows on you every time you play it. They have added many new
but large trees here to add to the beauty and challenge so be prepared for
more obstacles on your next round. Kabinburi was designed by Yoshikazu Kato
who also did the layouts for Blue Canyon Phuket and locally, Treasure Hills
so you will see his signature crocodile here as well.
Day 1 was the singles comp, an individual Stableford, and
was won by our own TGC partner, big hitting John McHugh! Johnny is just
coming into form, so that must mean it’s time to get back on the rig and not
pick up a club for 28 days … interesting training concept.
Founding member Simon Philbrook took 2 nd,
but it was the first time Si played here and he loved it. Bangkok buddy Rich
Moore played well enough to squeeze out smooth swinging Paul Smith for third
place on this rain free outing. Big thanks go out to Bob Newell for picking
up the clipboard yet again and running the show for us on this trip.
Everyone ended up winning, as the Kantary Hotel is the
best retreat on our schedule. Their golf package includes 1 night hotel with
breakfast and 2 green fees for 2,800 baht and that is hard to beat. The
hotel is a strong 4-star plus facility, with large rooms, a great pool and
gym and the best restaurant in town. It would be nice if we would get to
spend more time in those great rooms there!
Day 2 was the 2-Man BB Rainbow. For this format a
yellow-white-blue tee rotation was chosen, as the reds were just too short.
This was a fun day out as we picked the teams the night before during the
consumption of large quantities of adult beverages back at the “Cowboy Bar”
across from the hotel.
The draw was tense, and when Bob Newell blind-picked Tony
Duthie, he was all groans. Tony had a rough day and only ended up with 15
points, so Bob wasn’t expecting much. As it ended up, Tony and Bob were the
perfect partnership and ham & cheesed it all through the day to finish on
top. Perhaps carrying on until 3:00 AM for the both of them was also their
secret weapon, a strategy that could only work for this crazy game of golf
we torture ourselves with.
Rich Moore was on the podium once again as he teamed up
with Ed Wyckoff to join forces for 2 nd
place. Thanks to all for making this yet another great road trip and another
great week of golf.
Note: The Golf Club is located on
Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a
seriously fun day out. Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golf

Ian’s practice pays off
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, July 15, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Claude Harder (12) 39 pts
2nd Jan Eriksen (8) 38 pts
B Flight
1st Ian Jones (14) 41 pts
2nd Johnny Lindberg (14) 36 pts
Near Pins: No 4 Jack Grindvold, No 9 Lance
Robinson, No 12 Peter Henshaw, No 16 Ed Wyckoff
Birthday boy Bob Newell.
Ian Jones, never a slouch at a 14 handicap but always
willing to learn, hooked up with ‘Broad more’ Bob to see if he could sort
out his short game and the dividends were quick to evidence themselves.
‘Broad more’, whose golf credentials include four prison warders golfer of
the year titles and is well known to be adept at fine tuning a players
existing game, had a pleasant and adept canvas to work within the affable
Aussie Ian Jones. The gears meshed and the result was a very productive
Sunday outing as he was the top dog in A Flight and man of the match with a
splendid 41 point return. Ian was five clear of Johnny Lindberg.
Turning to the premier flight, old friend Claude Harder,
never far from the brass ring, stood atop the podium with a faultless 39
points. Claude needed every one of them as Jan ‘the quite one’ was just a
stroke behind. Jan however did have the comfort of a couple of 2’s along
with Jack Grindvold, Johnny Lindberg, Gerry Power and fellow Irishman Peter
Henshaw. It was good to see our old pal Ian Grout back with the gang.
Back at Lewiinski’s it was party time as ‘Broad more’
celebrated his 26th times 26 Birthday.
Monday, July 16,
Bangpakong - Stableford
1st Rod Brown (18) 36 pts
2nd Prem Chand (9) 35 pts
Bangpakong Riverside can play as tough as any course
around and that was certainly in evidence as no one bettered their handicap
and only one player equaled his.
Rod Brown topped A Flight, closely followed by Prem Chad
who showed little respect for Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff as he
edged Ed off the podium steps on count back. Ed did manage a smile however
as he carded the only ‘2’ of the day.
Wednesday, July 18,
Burapha A & B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Phil Page (13) 38pts
2nd Peter Stonebridge (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Nick Odnoral (18) 40pts
2nd Ivan Plunkett (20) 40pts
It was off to the friendly confines of Burapha’s American
Wood and British Link’s nines where the course was as welcoming as ever.
A couple of old hands won the two flights; Phil Page took
top spot in the premier flight with a very impressive 38 points as Nick
Odnoral took B Flight honours with a faultless 40 points. But Nick needed a
count back to eke out a victory over mate and friend of all Irishmen Ivan
Plunkett.
Phil meanwhile was three strokes clear of Peter ‘the
Headmaster’ Stonebridge who is always a welcome addition to the society
ranks.
J P Maffray, Salvatore Brizzi, Ivan Plunkett, Eddie
Delaney, and Jim Reid shared the ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list, otherwise, why not give Colin
a ring on 0898260764. Transport is provided.

Ian & Turnip win Suzi’s Birthday bash
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday winners, John O’Keefe,
Amarjit Banwaitt, Dennis Persson and Ian Heddle with Suzi.
Monday, July 16, Burapha –
Pairs Tournament
So for our second Monday in a row, we had another
Birthday Cup with 44 players playing in a 2-person scramble (Ambrose) to
celebrate Suzi’s big four zero!
Playing the A & B loops from the white tees the 22 teams
massed at the start and had the benefit of the use of two tees, on what was
otherwise a relatively quiet day for the course, with Capt’ Steve organising
the show and capably getting everyone smoothly underway. The weather was
great and the course in excellent nick with a good pace of play, everybody
getting round in less than four hours.
It wasn’t quite clear exactly when Rosco’s group
discovered that the game they were playing was not quite the same as
everybody else as they were hitting alternate shots instead of both from the
same place. However at presentation, after apologies from the organisers
over the misinterpretation of the rules, all four players in the group were
awarded 250 Baht Outback vouchers for being the winners of the Greensome
Event!
The clear winners, with a bogey free round of 68, were
Ian Heddle and Dennis Persson (62.7 net) followed in by the level par round
from Raji and John O’Keefe, resulting in a net 66.
Near pins were won by John Cunningham B8, Brian Maddox
A6, and Greg Hill A3.
Suzi, who was joined by her husband, John, having flown
in from Nigeria supposedly on a surprise four day visit, treated her many
friends and players alike to a fine spread of lasagne and roast pork, laid
on by the Outback kitchen. John, who always has a laugh or two up his
sleeve, the proceeded to amuse us all, getting the Outback girls to mime
with the rugby version of Old McDonald.
Tiger & Heineken joined the fun as well by sending us a
couple of their promotion girls to help with serving drinks and it was
noticable that one or two customers indulged in a little more than the usual
amount!
Suzi handed the traditional birthday money garland over
to Noy (Outback staff) to be shared amongst the staff and she followed that
by generously ringing the bell. Thanks and Happy Birthday from us all.
1st Ian Heddle & Dennis Persson
(5.3) net 62.7
2nd Amarjit Banwaitt & John O’Keefe
(6) net 66
3rd Steve Mann & Tim Knight (6) net
67
Birthday girl Suzi with John.
Tuesday, July 17, Pattaya
C.C. – Stableoford
It’s sometimes difficult to write about the same 9 holes
week in and week out and today is one of those days. So what about The Open
at Royal Lytham St Annes which started on Thursday and many of us here at
the Outback were frantically trying to pick our favourite five players to
make the cut.
Of the 11 players here at Pattaya, picking a winner was
just as hard, with this week being the turn of Ken Young, who hasn’t been
seen here for a while and scored a very creditable 39pts off his h’cap of 29
(now 28). Chad followed him home, five adrift with 34 ahead of Mike Coleman
& Jim Payne both on 33.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Ken Young (29) 39pts
2nd Barry Chadbourn (20) 34pts
3rd Michael Coleman (18) 33pts
4th Jim Payne (26) 33pts
Tuesday, July 17, Pleasant
Valley – Stableford
With no Laem Chabang this week because of the Pro Tour,
we decided to tryout Pleasant Valley, a course we rarely go to – and it
seemed it was going to stay that way with only one name on the sign-up sheet
on Monday morning but in less than 12 hours, there were suddenly 13 players
requiring an urgent call to Joe for vouchers. In the event, Tuesdays are
“Sport Days” and the voucher saves only 50 Baht!
Potential new PSC member Martin Burbidge put on a fine
display to score 39pts off seven from the blue tees and our organiser for
the day, John O’Keefe was the runner-up with 37.
Welcome also today to a newcomer with the Outback, Clive
Hanning.
Like at PCC, there were no ‘2’s.
1st Martin Burbidge (7) 39pts
2nd John O’Keefe (17) 37pts
3rd Lance Robinson (12) 36pts
4th Clive Hanning (20) 35pts
Wednesday, July 18, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
A reasonable turnout of four groups (14 players) went to
Siam Plantation to play the Pineapple and Tapioca courses; it (the course)
was heavily booked but we still managed a good pace of play with very few
hold-ups. The day was very windy and made for some very tricky holes but had
the benefit of keeping everybody cool.
Needless to say the fairways were again in great
condition and the greens are just fantastic to putt on. However, the wind
and slick greens got the better of most of us and the best score recorded
for the day was only 34 points from Tom Fitzpatrick on a 13 handicap with
most scores in the high 20’s.
For the third straight outing this week, there were no
‘2’s.
1st Tom Fitzpatrick (13) 34pts
2nd Steve Mann (8) 32pts
3rd Jim Bryan (16) 31pts
4th Steve Poznanski (15) 31pts
Friday, July 20, Green
Valley – Stableford
Twenty-two players for our normal Friday outing to Green
Valley and we were greeted by overcast, cloudy skies which unfortunately
opened to give light (but not heavy) rain off and on for the whole round
together with a light breeze, which made for a very cool day. It was also a
slow one, as players were in and out of drink stops sheltering from the
rain.
Green Valley has always had hard bunkers and at least
they were consistent all over the course and in my opinion easy to play.
Unfortunately they have embarked on a program of putting more sand in the
bunkers and at the moment they are not consistent and in some cases have far
too much sand in them. Otherwise, the course was presented well but with the
rain the greens got slower and slower.
John Player, from Div B, shot the best round of the day
with 39pts, five clear of the second man in that Div, David Day on 34 with
Ian Hart in third, one point further back.
David Dunstan equalled his handicap of just 5, to score
36pts to win Div A from regular playing member, Jack Butler on 35 and Capt’
Steve with 33.
There were four ‘2’s from Jan Eriksen, Greg Hill, Andy
Makara & Tim Knight.
Div A (0-12)
1st David Dunstan (5) 36pts
2nd Jack Butler (9) 35pts
3rd Steve Mann (9) 33pts
Div B (13+)
1st John Player (20) 39pts
2nd David Day (15) 34pts
3rd Ian Hart (18) 33pts
Best Aggregate Scores: Front Nine: 20pts - David Dunstan;
Back Nine: 20pts - John Player; Par 5’s: 10pts - Jack Butler, Steve Mann;
Par 4’s: 24pts - John Player; Par 3’s: 9pts - John Player; Most Holes Under
Par: 3 - Steve Mann, David Dunstan

Hwy 331 - the key to good golf
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday’s top man Brian
Maddox, right, with Near Pin winner Phil.
Tuesday, July 17, Treasure
Hill - Stableford
First to Tuesday, when we travelled to Treasure Hill,
with the dual purpose of today’s comp and perhaps gaining some insight for
the upcoming PSC tournament. Brian Maddox (20) played well in patches to
lead the way home with a solid 33 points, despite a poor finish over the
last 3 holes. Jeff Wylie (5) barely found the club face early in the round,
finishing with an unspectacular 30 points for second spot.
Nar pins were shared around between Phil and Jeff.
Thursday, July 19,
Greenwood – Stableford
Thursday was a little further up the road to Greenwood,
with C & A being our allotted test. We were light on numbers and to
accommodate the players of the day we decided on a skins format, the lower
handicappers going from the Blue tees, with the others from the White.
Everybody had some degree of success, however Jeff (5)
from the Blue & Phil (13) tied at the top for most skins. All agreed it was
a fun, inexpensive way to go with the short field.
It was a disappointing day for the ML’ers at the PSC
tournament on Friday, not contending in any flight contested, but we did
have a couple of good shots, but few & far between on this day. There’s
always next time!
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday (subject to Public Holidays), with ML hosting prompt
presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries.
Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Karl Flood excels on the greens
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, July 16, Eastern
Star - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Mike Armstrong (15) 32pts
2nd John Oswald (11) 32pts
3rd Max Allen (13) 31pts
4th Graham Davis (8) 27pts
The week started in Bang Chang at the Robert Trent Jones
designed Eastern Star where the course generally was in good shape
considering the weather conditions but the greens still needed a lot of
patience and understanding, especially from the lower handicap players.
Frank McGowan.
The top two on the day, who were both playing the course
for the first time, took a little while to come to terms with the greens but
did so over the inward half where they both scored 18 points, with Mike
Armstrong holding on to win with a strong finish, proving the better over
the back six by a margin of 12 to 11, to leave John Oswald in second place.
Max Allen made it yet another Aussie 1, 2, 3 with a
steady round one shot back as he also got better as the round progressed,
finishing strongly with seventeen points on the back nine.
It was left to Graham Davis again to deny a clean sweep
of the podium from the boys from down under even though it took until the
last five holes for him to get the feel of the day.
It was unsurprising that the CSS for the day went out
three and the competition became non-counting for upward review of
handicaps.
There were no 2’s in the second division but Graham Davis
almost made it a worthwhile day out as he had the only one in the first
division.
There were farewells today for some of the Gosnell’s boys
who had been plundering the spoils over the last couple of weeks as Gavin
Leong, Max Allen and Mike Armstrong returned home for possibly some sterner
tests over their home course.
Wednesday, July 18, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Graham Davis (8) 33pts
2nd Alwyne Burley (18) 29pts
3rd Rodney Nabbe (10) 26pts
4th Rick Holmes (11) 26pts
It was a smaller than usual group that set off from Soi
13 as many players decided to give the day a miss after viewing the storm
clouds gathering early in the morning.
Graham Davis.
With many of the usual suspects either returned home or
still abed, it was left to Graham Davis to take his first win of his tour of
the Pattaya area courses this year, which he is undertaking without the
benefit or the help and advice from his friend and mentor Gordon Millar, who
is concentrating on the finer things this year during a sabbatical from golf
in Asia.
Graham’s card still bore the scars of a few misread putts
but generally had the mark of better things to come in the near future as he
led in the field by a clear four shots.
Alwyne Burley, who now divides his time between golf and
building a brand new career in beverage marketing to the masses, slipped or
possibly even skidded into second place with a return that showed a few
cross outs but otherwise was beautifully marked and a picture to behold for
the scorer.
Rodney Nabbe took third place after getting the better of
a count back over Rick Holmes over the last six by a margin of 8 to 7 after
they had tied the nine at 14 each.
Unsurprisingly there were no 2’s in either division as
the CSS again went out three shots and the competition became non-counting.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for
Rodney Nabbe and Rick Holmes. Rick, who has not played for over eighteen
months due to a serious arm injury, will have a review of his handicap under
a post-medical re-assessment to enable him to get back into a competitive
position for the future, although on this day’s performance he is almost
there.
Friday, July 20, Crystal Bay - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Karl Flood (17) 39pts
2nd Frank McGowan (16) 36pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (17) 34pts
4th Terry Hodgkiss (22) 33pts
5th Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 32pts
6th Rodney Nabbe (10) 32pts
Finally the players were able to return some decent cards
as the day stayed almost dry after a delayed start when the course
management, almost unbelievably, refused to take money for green and caddy
fees until they decided that the course was in a fit state to take play, as
the rain had been belting down from the moment the buses left for the
course.
Mike Armstrong.
But even with a very wet course the greens dried quickly
and soon showed up to be the best that had been encountered for the week,
which resulted in the much improved returns.
Karl Flood played some fairly ordinary golf until he
arrived at the greens and thereafter stunned his playing partners with some
outstanding putting that left him three clear of the chasing pack and
ensured that in his first time out with the group he took the top step of
the podium with a well deserved win.
Frank McGowan, who had been witness to this putting
exhibition as one of the other players in the group, took second place as a
little of the magic rubbed off on him, and he ended with a level handicap
round.
Shuichi Kodaka, who has been strangely off the podium for
a couple of weeks, nearly came back to form two shots further back in third
place and one ahead of Terry Hodgkiss whose better than usual day ended
without a three putt on the card following a quick freebie before breakfast
from The Doc.
Takeshi Hakozaki could not quite take advantage of his
member’s local knowledge but did enough in a count back with Rodney Nabbe,
winning 19 to 17 to lay claim to fifth.
Once again, although the course was playing a lot easier
on the par threes than the rest of the week, there were no 2’s in either
division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for Karl Flood,
playing out of the Haven for the first time, and welcome backs for Takeshi
Hakozaki, together with farewells for John Oswald and Peter Buckley who
further depleted the Australian contingent that have been hogging most of
the podium of late, possibly leaving the way clear for some others from
other parts of the world to get a look-in sometime in the near future.
Before the presentations were made there was a welcome
back for Frank McGowan.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between
Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the
course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you
should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you
wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web
site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Winfield chips-in
for Khao Kheow victory
PSC golf from Cafe Kronborg
Monday, July 16,
Khao Kheow – Stableford
1st Mike Winfield (22) 38pts
2nd Henry Wong (22) 32pts
3rd Kristin Helgason (17) 30pts
4th Jon Swanson (21) 30pts
5th Torben Sorensen (29) 28pts
Khao Kheow B and C loops were the test today, departure
was on time and just 40 minutes to the course. After a quick check-in it was
out to B1 and tee-off 36 minutes early. The weather was fine with a nice
breeze and as Sunday was St. Swithin’s Day we will have much of the same to
the end of August.
We had the course in front to ourselves all day with few
groups behind. The B course was in fine condition but C had 5 fairways that
were infected with some broadleaf weed-like grass, but other than that the
course was quite playable.
Back in the clubhouse after speeding around in 3 hours
and 50 minutes we welcomed Charlotte Saaterup from Greenland and Torben
Sorensen from Denmark.
Mike Winfield was the winner on the day with 2 birdie
chip-ins on the opening nine before fading on the back to finish with 38
points. Henry Wong took second on 32 points, while Kristin Helgason was
third on a count back over Jon Swanson in fourth, both 30 points, and Torben
Sorensen took fifth with 38.
Thursday, July 19,
Pleasant Valley – Stableford
A Flight (0-22)
1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 38pts
2nd Kristin Helgason (17) 38pts
3rd Mike Winfield (22) 37pts
B Flight (23+)
1st Jim Carrick (36) 38pts
2nd Ronnie Ratte (30) 35pts
3rd Dave Richardson (25) 33pts
We got off on time at Pleasant Valley Golf Club, under
overcast and humid conditions with a pleasant breeze all day. The course was
in good condition with slowish greens.
Back in the clubhouse, after getting around in 4 hours
and 10 minutes, we welcomed Ray Gott from the UK.
Two flights today with the A Flight won by Takeshi
Hakozaki on a count back from Kristin Helgason second, both 38 points, and
Mike Winfield third on 37.
Jim Carrick took the B Flight with 38 points, Ronnie
Ratte was second on 35, and Dave Richardson claimed third on 33 points.

Another perfect day in paradise at Phoenix Golf Club: the
course is getting better every week and although the greens are still a
little slow, they are very true and when you get used to the speed you can
putt with great confidence.
Joe Miller showed us all the way this week with a
fantastic score of 76 gross off handicap 10 (not now though) to record 42
points. A not so close second was Richard Baldwin with 36 points, who just
edged out Bob Neylon on count back into third place. A few others who scored
a respectable 35 points were just any others.
Bill Hewitt scooped the Near Pins today, winning both
that were set up. Sadly he missed both for birdies.
Back at the Relax Bar our hosts donated the lucky draw
prizes which went to Joris Goetshalkx, Bob Neylon and Sergio Volpi.
Note: We play every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and anyone who has an
official handicap of no more than 28 is welcome. Call me (Mike) on 087 091

Big fish take the weekend off
Kamping holds her prize catch.
Mike Gerrard.
After the high winds and rainy storms of late we were
quite worried that both our fishing trips would have to be cancelled.
However Buddha smiled on us and both Sunday 15th and Monday 16th July turned
out to be very successful days indeed. Sadly, the ‘biggies’ just did not
seem hungry and our live squid baits were untouched. After a couple of hours
of just sitting around we decided it was time for action, so it was onto
drifting the day away with small hand lines and rods and a couple of top
surface big rigs.
Both days provided at least 5 big carrier bags of fish
ranging from 1 pound to 4 or 5 pounds including species such as grouper, red
snapper and other snappers, as shown in the photo with Kamping holding a
couple of beauts. On Sunday it was Noel Pittard who received the KPK cap for
the best two fish of the day.
Our trips are not the cheapest in town but with a 65-foot
boat we only allow 6 passengers fishing at any time which makes sure of
little or no tangles and plenty of room for everyone. There is an upper deck
with relaxers for anyone who fancies a nap for an hour or so. Needless to
say I am up there quite a few times during the day when we move around.
Next scheduled trip is Sunday 29th July with a couple of
spaces still available. Thereafter we are starting to book every fortnight
either on a Saturday or Sunday. However, we can arrange any day if we have
enough passengers. Give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565 if you need more
information.

Match of the decade
The winning team from the
Father Ray Children’s Home.
Derek Franklin
Forget the 2012 London Olympics, the US Tennis Open, the
Darts World Championship, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race and any other
forthcoming sporting event this year. Pattaya has recently witnessed the
most anticipated and exciting sporting competition of the year, if not the
decade; the under-12 soccer match played between the Father Ray Children’s
Home and the Father Ray Children’s Village.
This was the first time the team from the Village had
ever played a competitive match, and they were at a psychological
disadvantage even before the kick-off whistle was blown.
Playing on home ground, the team from the Children’s Home
had the support of their housemates. They had decided to wear the same
soccer kit as the current World Cup and Euro 2012 champions and the number
one FIFA ranked team – Spain, and they taunted their rivals who arrived
wearing the team strip of the USA, currently ranked thirty sixth in the
rankings.
While the home team was feeling confident about the game,
the visitors were heard asking their manager if they stood a chance of
winning. His reply was that it ‘was not the winning but the taking part that
mattered’.
Losing six goals to two did matter, and no matter how
much they blamed each other they promised to train harder and even if it
took a long time they would one day beat the team from the Children’s Home.
This rivalry could go on for many years.
The Village kids - unhappy in
defeat.

Ludo returns on loan as United draw a blank in the north

earlier this week. (Photo/Pattaya United)
Pattaya United endured a disappointing trip to the north
of the country last week as they returned home empty handed from two back to
back defeats on the road against Chaingrai United and TTM Chaingmai FC.
The Dolphins’ first setback came at the United Stadium in
Chiangrai on Wednesday, July 18. Pattaya made the worst possible start to
the match when they fell behind in just the 8th minute after keeper Narit
misjudged a through ball and was left helpless as Chiangrai forward Nantawat
Tansopa darted in to steer the ball into the back of the unguarded net.
Pattaya had to wait until the second half of the game to
get back on level terms, but when it came the goal was well worth waiting
for. Dolphin forward O.J. Obatola picked up the ball at the edge of the
Chiangrai penalty area and cleverly evaded the challenges of 2 home
defenders before striking a low left foot shot into the bottom corner of the
net.
Unfortunately, the joy for Pattaya was to be short lived
as first defender Mariแn Juhแs was red carded in the 67th minute for a foul
on Tansopa, and then with just 10 minutes remaining in the game, Brazilian
Leandro Assump็ใo curled a superb free-kick over the Pattaya wall and past
Narit to give the hosts maximum points.
Four days later, Pattaya turned out at the 700-year
Anniversary Stadium in Chiangmai to take on the league’s bottom club TTM FC.
Once again, to the disappointment of the travelling
Dolphin fans, United were unable to snap out of their run of poor form and
conceded the decisive goal in the ninth minute when TTM’s Laksana Kumrin saw
his initial shot hit the United post but was the first to react and steered
in the rebound.
It could have been even worse for United in a first half
littered with defensive mistakes as Kraikitti In-Utane’s fierce shot crashed
against the woodwork with Narit well beaten.
Pattaya came back strongly after the break and only a
flying save by TTM keeper Won Yoo-Hyun denied a spectacular equalizer from
United skipper Niweat Siriwong, but for the most part the visitors were
lacking a cutting edge to their play and TTM hung on for 3 valuable points
in the relegation dog-fight.
United have the chance to quickly avenge the two losses
as they were due to take on Chiangmai on Wednesday night, July 25, at the
Nongprue Stadium and this coming Saturday have the return fixture against
Chiangrai, with kick-off scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Dolphins have been bolstered by news that former fan
favourite and last year’s leading scorer Ludovick Takam has returned on loan
from Chonburi FC until the end of the current season. Ludovick has struggled
to make an impact at his new club and has scored just 2 goals in 11
appearances for the ‘Sharks’ this term. United and the player will assess
the situation at the end of the campaign and a permanent return of the
livewire Cameroon striker is a distinct possibility.
