Crumpton Oaks
Wednesday Darts League
Final Standings (week 20)
Mee Chew Sports Bar team
members pose with their trophy.
Mee Chew Bar in Soi Yamato have won the
latest Wednesday Night Darts League sponsored by Crumpton Oaks Cider. It was
a closely fought league with it coming down to the last 2 weeks of the
season.
Mee Chew Bar had started the season losing their first 3
games but got it together when it mattered with both home and away victories
against their toughest opponents, Yates Bar and The Irish Rovers, in the
second half of the season. The Irish Rovers beat Yates Bar in the last game
of the season to claim second place spot.
Other stats from the current league, which finished on
July 18, are as follows: Most team tons - The Irish Rovers (405); Most
Individual Check-Outs - Joh from Yates Bar (78); Most Individual Tons – Ken
from The Irish Rovers (169); Highest Check-Out – Chet from the Fishing
Gallery ‘B’ team (170).
Sea Fishing with

Mike Gerrard
We have had many trips this last month or two due to old
members coming and going and the results have been very mixed.
Troy with his pompano catch.
The catching of larger species of fish is always a little
worse at this time of the year because the water becomes warm and the type
of boats available in this area are not fast enough to get us out into
deeper waters to find the biggies. However, getting into deeper water is not
on the agenda anyway due to high winds and choppy seas. We like to keep
comfortable.
The winds are starting to pick up now and that has been
the biggest battle out there on the water. Good weather, but quite rough at
times. With me fast becoming an old codger the waves have caught me out
twice in one week and sent me reeling on my back with legs and arms akimbo.
Not a pretty sight! Neither are the bruises on my back and arms.
The catches of the smaller varieties (1 to 6 pounds) is
very abundant. Nice catches of semi big snapper and grouper, and, of course,
pladang are being recorded. All of these varieties make for great pan frying
or baking and in my opinion are better tasting than the larger fish.
Barracuda and swordfish.
Our photo’s show Troy Wheeler holding a nice pompano he
landed and in the other picture he also caught the swordfish type on a lure
whilst yours truly caught the barracuda, luckily on a small line rig but the
hook had just caught the side of the mouth making it difficult for the fish
to bite through the line. This was a great fight on light line and a very
thin whippy rod. Allowing the fish some line occasionally was the order of
the day.
So our itinerary is every fortnight on the second and
fourth Saturday’s of the month, or any other day if you have enough people
interested. I can get a boat organised within 48 hours. If anyone is
interested give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565. Happy hooking!

Lawton leads the pack at Green Valley
PSC from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, July 30, Burapha –
Stableford
Thirteen Outbackers played Burapha A and B off the blue
markers on a day that was overcast and very cool. At over 6700 yards the
course played its full length for a change and none of the holes were easy,
and made tougher by the ensuing rain for a couple of holes, which had
threatened for some time.
Suzi Lawton.
No carts were allowed on the fairways but even though you
didn’t get much run they were surprisingly dry and the greens were again in
great condition but needless to say, were a little slow after the rain but
still great to putt on.
Pace of play was very good with very few players before
or after our groups and as usual we teed off earlier than our 10am tee time.
Most players found the course very tough and the scores
reflect that. The best score for the day was returned by Greg Hill with 35
points from Suzi Lawton on 34 points and Wayne Cotterell had the only ‘2’ on
B8.
1st Greg Hill (20) 35pts
2nd Suzi Lawton (17) 34pts
3rd John Player (19) 31pts
Tuesday, July 31, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Despite a relatively good turnout of 13 for a Tuesday on
course with only nine holes open, a good score remained elusive as only two
players actually made it over the 30 point mark, with half the field scoring
either 28 or 29 points.
The course was looking quite acceptable and did not
contribute to the lower than average scoring as the fairways & greens were
generally good. As there were no ‘2’s, there were five places on the podium,
headed by Nigel Cannon with 34, with Dennis the Turnip bringing up the rear
with the last of three 29’s.
1st Nigel Cannon (21) 34pts
2nd Geoff Moodie (27) 31pts
3rd David Earthrowl (18) 29pts
4th Jack Moseley (18) 29pts
5th Dennis Persson (17) 29pts
Tuesday, July 31, Laem Chabang – Stableford
A disappointing turnout at Laem Chabang today with just 8
playing the A & B nines on this lovely course. As with the scoring at
Pattaya C.C., scoring here was below average with only one player and the
day’s winner, Bernie Stafford, making more than 30 points.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Bernie Stafford (12) 31pts
2nd Andre Coetzee (6) 29pts
3rd Andy Butterworth (12) 29pts
Wednesday, August 1, Siam Plantation – Stableford
Twelve Outbackers travelled to Siam Plantation for our
Wednesday competition and had another brilliant day out, which although
windy and overcast was just a great for golf. The course (B & A) has had a
lot of rain over the past few days and was a little soft underfoot but the
greens were as superb as ever and the course was still presented in great
shape. The starters got everybody off on time and pace of play was again
very good considering the number of golfers on the course.
Welcome back to Bert Lewis, a friend of Bobby Driggs and
welcome also to Jason McGuiness for his first game with the Outback; Jason
is on a 3 handicap and showed some form even with a borrowed set of clubs
and has great potential for a 14yr old and we look forward to his next
visit.
The course was the winner on the day with the best score
being 34 points from Capt’ Stephen, from a host of players on 33 points.
There were three ‘2’s from Joe Mooneyham, Chris Davisson
and Bobby Driggs.
1st Steve Mann (9) 34pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) 33pts
3rd Mark Riggall (14) 33pts
4th Chris Davisson (11) 33pts
5th Jim Bryan (16) 33pts
Wednesday, August 1, Bangpra – Stableford
Travelling to Bangpra today there were 18 players; not
all of whom were in the competition (four weren’t), not all of whom
completed the course, and not all of whom handed their card in.
We teed off twenty minutes early but unfortunately went
round in over four and a half hours due a four-ball in front of us who were
very slow to say the least, but sometimes these things happen at any of the
courses we play at and there’s very little we can do about it.
The course was in great condition and the greens were
like lightning if you had a downhill putt, making a challenge to all of us.
On the sixth, we saw a couple of monkeys which was fun to see them chasing
each other up and down the trees.
We would like to welcome back Paul Rogers and congrats
for setting your alarm and well done to John O’Keefe for the day’s win with
37 points from Martin Kingswood (36pts) in second and Suzi back in third on
33.
There was just one ‘2’ from Pottsy on the 8th.
1st John O’Keefe (18) 37pts
2nd Martin Kingswood (13) 36pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (17) 33pts
Friday, August 3, Green Valley – Stableford
Only 19 Outbackers for Green Valley as many stayed away
because of holiday rates and the prospect of a full course and slow play.
Although heavily booked, most groups started after us and pace of play was
very good, with all groups finishing in just over three and a half hours.
Once again the course was in good condition even though
they have had a few days of heavy rain and some bunkers had washouts that
had not been repaired, but the greens were good which led to some excellent
scoring.
The course layout has been changed with the old number 3
(par 5) becoming the number 1 hole and the old difficult hole no 1 has
become the 3rd hole; this is a good change as it allows players to warm up
before tackling the No.1 ranked hole on the course.
A number of players scored well but Suzi Lawton led the
pack with a great score of 41 points, from Paul Rodgers with 40 points and
Joe Mooneyham with 39 points making up the placings.
There was only one ‘2’ from Bobby Driggs on the 16th.
1st Suzi Lawton (17) 41pts
2nd Paul Rodgers (18) 40pts
3rd Joe Mooneyham (14) 39pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a
hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or call Jack on 087 941

Paul Bray kicks off with a bang
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday’s winner Paul Bray, right, with golf
manager Colin Davis.
Sunday, July 29, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Paul Bray (5) 39pts
2nd Peter LeNoury (9) 37pts
3rd Colin Davis (15) 37pts
Near Pins: No 4 Ed Wyckoff; No 9 Ian Halfpenny; No
12 Salvatore Brizzi; No 16 Eddy Beilby
The man of the match was Irishman Paul Bray who arrived
from his adopted home in Australia for a summer break. Paul out raced a host
of 37’s with his award winning 39 points.
Right on Paul’s well worn heals were a bunch of players
on 37 points and Peter LeNoury emerged the happiest to grab the silver and
Colin ‘the donkey’ the bronze. ‘Broad more’ Bob put together a steady par
round but was devastated to find his pet gold fish had somehow flipped into
his golf bag and suffocated (the ‘tuna’ he gets over it the better!)
Ed ‘our man in the white house’ Wyckoff and Ed Delaney
were edged off the podium, but the two Eds did have the last laugh as they
split the rollover 2,s pot.
Monday, July 30, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
1st Colin Davis (15) 34pts
The field is always a bit modest on the second day of the
society’s weekly back-to-back feature and this Tuesday was no exception.
Colin ‘the donkey’ led them out and back in with a best on the day 34
points. As one would expect, no 2’s were recorded so it is a rollover on
Wednesday.
Wednesday, August 1,
Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Stuart Rochi (18) 34pts
2nd Eddy Beilby (6) 32pts
B Flight
1st Ed Delaney (24) 37pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (22) 34pts
Ed the ‘Irish rover’ Delaney showed considerable prowess
on the course and the legendry greens of Bangpra to notch a best in B Flight
and best on the day 37 points. Ed, you might recall, took last week by storm
as he continues to make steady inroads on his handicap. Ed’s fine round left
Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas singing the blues as he picked up the silver.
Stuart Rochi continues to show good form as his 34 points
took the top podium spot in the senior flight. Aussi Salvatore Brizzi, no
stranger to the podium steps, picked up the silver two strokes adrift;
should be noted that Salvatore needed a friendly count back to keep one of
the society’s top performers Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby off the podium.
No 2’s were recorded so it’s a rollover on Friday.
Friday, August 3, Crystal
Bay A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Maurice Bowman (16) 36pts
2nd Rod Brown (18) 36pts
B Flight
1st Barry Elphick (23) 38pts
2nd Ed Delaney (24) 36pts
With a pair of golfers tied atop of the flagship flight
at even par rounds, the old count back was dragged out and when the dust had
settled it was Maurice Bowman, whose back side was more favorably
distributed, leaving Rod Brown to fill the silver spot.
It was B Flight that threw up the man of the match in
Barry Elphick. Barry was also the only competitor to better par on the day
with a solid 38 points - no mean feat on this layout. Ed ‘the Irish rover’
Delaney, never far away from the pay window, lifted the silver with an even
par performance.
Salvatore Brizzi and Thierry Temime split a very healthy
2’s rollover.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

‘Tough nut’ takes the top honour
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
Derek Brook
Tuesday, July 31, Greenwood – Stableford
This is always the biggest day of Tuesday’s golf at
Tropical Bert’s as it is not only the ‘MBMG Group Golfer of the Month’, but
also ‘The MBMG Group Golfer of The Year’. Each time we have a golfer of the
month the points are added up and with 12 months results in we are able to
determine a golfer of the year. We thank MBMG Group for their kind
sponsorship of this award.
Simon Philbrook, left,
presents the ‘MBMG Golfer of the Year’ trophy and prize to Mashi Kaneta.
This year as we went into the final day of the 12 months,
it was all still up in the air in both competitions. However in the ‘MBMG
Golfer of the Year’, realistically only two had a chance with Mashi leading
by one point from the scribe. Mind, Mashi is a tough nut to crack. However
Brian Parish had an outside chance but had to win the monthly with both the
leaders not scoring. All very confusing.
The test for the day was to be Greenwood, and on arriving
and booking in we were told we were to play the C & A Nines. A really tough
test, made even more so by the fact it had rained heavily and the buggies
had to remain on the path. With such a damp day the decision was to play off
the yellows as we would have no run.
The rain came down on the way driving there, and as we
teed off the caddies had put the covers on all the bags. However, although
it was overcast we started with no rain falling and truth to tell although
we expected it to rain, apart from a few spots we got around without getting
wet.
Simon presents the monthly
prize to Dick Warberg.
The course despite being wet was a pleasure to play, and
although the rough was difficult to get out of the fairways were fine and,
as cutting them short was difficult, we had a bit of grass under the ball.
Of course with not much rain it did get a bit windy however it turned out to
be a fine day. The one area of difficulty was the greens that tended to be
very slow, but you cannot have everything in life.
We were soon round and into the restaurant for a bite to
eat and a cold drink. As the scores came in it was obvious we had some fine
scores and the scribe hoped his 37 points might have some worth. However as
the later scores came in it was obvious that the A Flight were in fine form.
Soon into cars we were then in for a slow drive back as
it seemed that all the cars and trucks in this part of Thailand were out
enjoying the rain finally stopping. Also it appears some ‘Important People’
were out and about as the oncoming traffic the other side of Route 7 was
full of cars with flashing lights. Nice when you are going the other way!
Tuesday’s winners on the day
with one of Bert’s finest.
Back in Bert’s it was a pleasure to find Bert had laid on
food for all the golfers on this special occasion, Thanks Bert. Also from
The MBMG Group, Simon Philbrook had come to present the prizes. Simon is
well known in golfing circles here in Pattaya.
Soon it was time for the results and see who had come
through. It was interesting to see that the A Flight, 0 to 19, had played
really well. So in the A Flight the winner was Alan Sullivan with 44 points,
a great round. In second place was Mike Gaussa with 41 points and in third
was that man Mashi Kaneta with 39 points.
In the B Flight, 20-up, the winner was Richard Holmes
with 37 points on count back over Daryl Evans in second. In third was Tom
Cotton with 35 points.
So to the MBMG Golfer of the Month - until the last card
in it looked like Daryl would win, but losing on count back meant that Dick
Warberg just hung on and was the winner for July. Well done Dick.
Now into the big one, and with neither Mashi nor the
scribe adding to their points in July, by the narrowest of margins Mashi
Kaneta was the first winner of the MBMG Group Golfer of the Year award.
Mashi is the steadiest of golfers so this is most deserved. Really well done
Mashi!

Friday, August 3, Rayong
Country Club – Stableford
Being a ‘weekend’ rate at the golf courses we thought we
would go to one of the better rate courses for a change and not move the
playing day one forward or back. So we went to this course that used to be
called Great Lake.
My mother told me if you did not have something good to
say, say nothing, but this write up would be rather short, and I tend not to
listen to most people, especially my mother, as just about everything I do
would be banned. Lovely lady though.
So, and being kind, the course is not in good condition.
My buggy had no brakes and had to be changed, the water was cold in the
showers and then we went back to Bert’s. Mind, my caddie was quite good but
this is the one course that you do not have to have a caddie. Fancy having
to sit there all day as car load after car load do not want a caddie? I have
to as usually I do not know where the ball has gone so it is cheaper than
buying a dozen balls. Sometimes a good day in the office can be better than
a bad day on the golf course.
Back at Bert’s it was a bite to eat and into the results.
The winner was Landis Brooks with 40 points ahead of Mike Gaussa in second
with 37 points and in third was Dick Warberg with 35. Good job the Olympics
is on the TV as it finished the day well. Bert has televisions all over the
place. T.T.F.N.

Consistency the key
as Jeff does the double
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Phil Waite and Owen Walkley.
Tuesday, July 31, was a visit to a course we don’t go to
all that often, Eastern Star, where we all played from the white tees. The
course is probably one of the least inspiring in the area (IMO), nothing to
really hang my hat on, just the impression I get. On this day, we had
vouchers thru the PSC, close to their Sport Day rate, which is about true
value for this course.
No-one really played inspired golf today, with Jeff Wylie
(5) leading the way with 35 points, ahead of Owen Walkley (12) who signed
for 33. Near pins are always hard won here and again it was Jeff picking up
the 13th, while the other 3 were missed by all participants, so a bit extra
for the Banglamung Boys Home.
We played on a Wednesday this week, due to the Buddhist
Lent holiday, so we opted to take advantage of the Sport Day rate at
Bangpra. We hadn’t played here for a while due to our normal playing days
not coinciding with Sport Days. The course was in fine order and at 700 baht
green fee represents good value for a good golf course.
Again we all played from the white tees, and as per
Tuesday it was Jeff Wylie (5) who was to the fore, with a solid 36 points.
Phillip Waite (12) played well on the back 9 to finish with 32 points for
second.
Near pins were secured by Brian with two, while Willem
picked up one, with the BBH scoring a donation for the other.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday &
Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Alain is Eastern Star
PSC golf report from The Growling Swan
Tuesday, July 31, Eastern
Star - Stableford
The usual scribe is on his biannual trip to Australia for
some R & R which will include free medical examinations courtesy of the
Aussie taxpayer. As a result the “Drut” is the chosen instrument to report
on the activities for the next few outings which hopefully will also appear
in August chronicles in the fair city of Pattaya.
Alain Taddei.
Prior to tee off Graham Buckingham was asked about his
chances of tackling this testing layout and gaining a podium finish. He
replied, “about as much as locating a dry raincoat in England.”
Despite Graham’s reservations fifteen golfers faced the
starter with the same relish as renowned entertainer Meatloaf having an
unimpeded run at the party pie table.
The weather was pleasant with a cooling breeze for most
of the journey and the course in excellent condition, whilst the greens
putted truly despite having been sanded a few weeks prior.
Playing from the yellow tees the first group completed
the journey in four hours and ten minutes.
Only one grade today and Alain Taddei with forty one
points gave the field a gentle reminder of his ability in a manner not seen
since the biblical youngster David showed Goliath some close quarter combat
skills. In second place was Bent Agerbo with forty points, Stu Rifkin with
thirty six points was third and Mike Gosden, who is a member of the Gosnells
Golf Club in Perth, Western Australia rounded out the podium also with
thirty six points.
1st Alain Taddei (19) 41pts
2nd Bent Agerbo (21) 40pts
3rd Stu Rifkin (16) 36pts
4th Mike Gosden (11) 36pts
Near pins went to Stu Rifkin on the 3rd whilst Peer Bruun
had a mortgage on the remainder taking out all three on the 6th, 13th and
17th.
Long putts saw Peer Bruun and Stu Rifkin successful.
Frank Donnelly, who briefly flirted with the thought of a
podium finish, confirmed his status as the Growling Swan’s most honest
golfer in winning the Coveted Compass Cap with a display that made
Australian federal politics seem as steady as a one legged tight rope walker
tackling Niagara Falls.
July monthly competition winners were Martin Todd in the
Consistency Two’s and Stu Rifkin in the R.Soul award whilst Sandy Leiper
triumphed in the prestigious Coveted Compass Cap of the month trophy.
Deefa the dog was the happy recipient of many donations
for the needy of Pattaya.

Pattaya Sports Club
Bowling League
200 Bowlers: Rich and
Yeow.
Cafô Kronborg moved up to fourth place from fifth
after winning three points from Brother D. Kran Nielsen bowled a 527
series and Morn Mack a 521 for Kronborg. Tue Pettae had a 528 series for
Brother D.
Noodle Russell bowled a 511 series and Rich Murphy
had a 212 second game to lead Green Tree to a four point win over
Canada. Green Tree moved up from fourth to second place and Canada
dropped from sixth to eighth.
Yeow Gale had a great 601 series with games of 209,
190 and 201 to lead Mitt in 2012 to a four point sweep over Bavaria.
Bavaria was bowling without Leo Kretscher who we believe had a heart
attack and we all are all hoping he will be OK.
VFW Post 9876 won three points from Indiana with Ooy
Pluemkamon doing all the damage for VFW with games of 190, 192 and 174
for a 556 series.
Edwards storms to win
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC)
at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society ended July with a visit to Khao
Kheow on Monday, 30th to play a stableford competition over the A and C
nines. Teeing off in a storm didn’t help the players concentration and it
saw a three-ball abandon the day after less than two holes because of sodden
fairways, bunkers and flooded greens. Miraculously within thirty minutes the
fairways had dried out enough to be acceptable and greens had reverted to
normal.
The course was to play very long off the yellow tees and
with no run at on the fairways it was a long hitters’ day and Peter Masters
and Joe Niisato shared third place with 35 points each. The winner was the
consistent Dave Edwards with an excellent 37 points on his first visit to
the course. Beginner’s luck? Not a bit of it as his recent history shows
having already tucked the society’s June “Player of the Month” title under
his belt, and well on the way to repeating the feat in July.
Dave also recorded the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on C3 to
cap a remarkable day. The Booby Bevy went to visitor Dave Morris for the
lowest total of the day and the Boss’s free beer draw was won by Wichai
Tananusorn, for whom nothing else went right all day. Khao Kheow was a day
to remember alright.
French polish at Rayong
As Friday, 3rd August was another Buddha Day the Pattaya
Golf Society visited Rayong CC to play a stableford event on the course
which is still recovering from green maintenance, thus making them slow and
uneven.
The large field, with the addition of many returning old
friends, meant that two flights were applied with the cut coming at sixteen
and under and play got underway on time. In the top flight Robbie Taylor
managed 32 points for third place, failing to close the gap on Seil Revels
who recorded another best gross of 78 to give him 35 points for second. The
winner was newest member Anthony Molan who made an instant impression with a
level par 36 points.
The second flight saw Andrew Purdie post 33 points for
third place, a couple behind Paul Brett who found a deserved place near the
top of the table after many attempts this trip with 35 points. The flight
winner was Frenchman Jean Morel who again broke par on one of his favourite
tracks with an excellent 37 point return.
There were three birdie ‘2’s with Alan Duckett and Steve
Keating (2) sharing the spoils. The Boss’s free beer was won by Masashi
Iizumi and low scoring Dave Edwards savoured the Booby Bevy for his descent
from hero to zero in a week which had seen him win two important events with
sub-par scores.
Rayong on a public holiday is always cheap and cheerful.
Nuff said!

Shuichi has best of the week
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, July 30, Pattana A
& B (Yellow) - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Shuichi Kodaka (17) 39pts
2nd Paul Hartley (16) 33pts
3rd Rodney Nabbe (11) 33pts
4th Patrick Scullion (21) 30pts
Heavy rain overnight and the prospect of a long slog over
the nearly 6900 yard measured course, prevented many of the would be
contenders from participating over the always difficult A and B courses and
even though the day’s competition was played under the lift and place local
rules from the yellow tees, the scoring remained difficult and the CSS
stayed at 72 for the par 73 course.
Shuichi Kodaka.
Shuichi Kodaka played another of his extremely steady
rounds, not taking on too many difficult shots to the green and ensuring
that a single bogey, net par, would be the worst result on a hole, to
compile a three under return that was good enough by six clear to win from
his closest challengers, although he did rather slip over the anchor at the
end by taking a zero pointer on the last hole to finish with just nineteen
for the inward half. But he had also played the par six fifth in six to be
the only player on the day to do so.
The two chasers were Paul Hartley and Rodney Nabbe, with
Paul getting the nod for second place after a count back which he won with a
better 18 to 15.
Patrick Scullion battled round after starting with three
scrubs out of the first four holes, which he then followed with a double
bogey eight on the fifth, which left him with a mountain to climb and after
finishing with eighteen on the back nine he had to settle for fourth place.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back for
Patrick Scullion and congratulations to the Honorary Touring Professional,
Philip Golding, who had been playing his first Senior European tournament,
The Senior Open at Turnberry, and subsequently made it on to the Order of
Merit in 57th place after placing 35th
in that tournament. His next outing will be in the Scottish Seniors on the
17th August, after which he is hoping to climb even
higher.
Friday, August 3,The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 73
1st Fred Land (11) 38pts
2nd Phillip Cass (23) 34pts
3rd Mike Dabanovich (11) 32pts
4th Rodney Nabbe (11) 30pts
5th Frank McGowan (17) 30pts
Billed by many courses as a holiday with the attendant
price hike, it was a very pleasant surprise to find at the check in that the
prices for the day would be as a normal day, leaving many of the players
extremely bemused but grateful for the management’s decision. But quite a
few had already decided to take the day off and the field was therefore
unnecessarily depleted, however those participating were treated to a good
day’s golf as the weather stayed fair, although the strong winds did affect
the scores, pushing the CSS out a shot to 73.
Fred Land.
Fred Land, who has been in good form a couple of times
recently, again showed well as he took the top step of the podium with a two
under return that featured a two over gross back nine that included a double
bogey and eight pars.
Phillip Cass again showed well as he slipped into second
place with a two over handicap round that could have been a lot better as he
went out in 20 points but fade over the closing holes, managing just five
points from the last five but was still two ahead of Mike Dabanovich in
third.
Mike could also have finished a lot higher in the order
as he had a real Curates egg of a round which included eight three pointers,
four two pointers and six zero pointers.
Rodney Nabbe won a count back with Frank McGowan for
fourth place with a better 14 to 13 over the back nine.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but
newcomer David Lowe cleaned out the first division pot with the only one of
the day.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for David Lowe and
welcome backs for Mike Dabanovich and Fred Land.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call into The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All

Gordon back up there
Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society
Stuart Gordon with two staff
members from The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
This being the last Tuesday of the month meant that our
good friend Giorgio Baccioli once again donated the voucher for his
wonderful restaurant Trattoria Italiana, situated near the bottom of
Pratumnak Hill.
On a beautiful, coolish daywe found we had odd numbers
today so we split everyone into three-ball teams and played both an
individual and team match. With the course in superb condition and very few
people playing, the pace was also excellent and we were finished by 4.00 pm.
and on our way back at The Relax Bar. Once there the staff and management
treated us with their usual efficiency and pleasantness.
After a few weeks of very indifferent play Stuart Gordon
eventually found form with a good individual score of 38 points to claim the
Trattoria Italiana voucher.
The team prize went to Tim Mason, Giorgio Baccioli & John
Bartley with a combined total (best two scores out of three) of 83 points.
However the best result of the day was a hole in one
recorded by Bill Hewitt on hole Mountain 4. Sadly we do not have prizes for
such events but I managed to find him a nice beer glass as a memento!
Our lucky draw prize winners (donated by The Relax Bar)
today were Joris Goetschalkx and Bill Hewitt. Poetic justice for his hole in
one?
Next week we have a new sponsor on board providing a
voucher for the lucky winner. Anyone interested in joining us should give me
a call on 087 091 7565 for more information.

Fergus banishes the blues
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
Oh Danny Boy, the Irish eyes are smiling again - Fergus
Brennan has found his golf game! Rumour has it a Leprechaun found it under a
four leaf clover next to a blarney stone in County Kildare and agreed to
sell it back to Fergus in exchange for a pristine copy of Terry Wogan
singing the Floral Dance and a pint of Guinness.
Richard Moore - winner at
Green Valley.
Fergus stated he was delighted to get his golf game back
and he didn’t really mind giving up his Terry Wogan 1978 hit record as it
was much too modern for him and that he still preferred listening to Jim
Reeves and Ruby Murray. He did however admit that buying somebody a pint of
Guinness at Thai prices really did hurt.
Anyway, enough of that old baloney, here are this week’s
competition results.
Monday 30th July saw the TRGG take on Green Valley and
Richard Moore found it very much to his liking returning with 40pts off his
twenty handicap to take first place from Fergus Brennan (13) who beat Mike
Gaussa (10) on count back with 37pts.
Fergus Brennan - winner at
Greenwood.
On Tuesday 31st July we took on Greenwood (B and C
courses) and found it was playing very long as a lot of wet weather had
taken its toll. There was also a fairly strong breeze which seemed to be in
our faces for about fifteen of the eighteen holes. Nevertheless Fergus
Brennan made a mockery of the conditions which left the rest of us
floundering. He shot 38pts to take first place off a reduced handicap from
the day before of twelve.
Jim Cleaver (13) was second with 35pts and Richard Moore,
also playing off a reduced handicap of eighteen, was still good enough to
take third place with 33pts.
Our usual trip to Phoenix on Thursday was cancelled as it
was a Buddha day in Thailand.
On Saturday 4th August Mountain Shadow was the venue and
was obviously playing difficult as no one bettered their handicap. Roger
Wilkinson (13) took the honours with 34pts with regular podium dweller Jeff
Bunn (6) coming in second on 32pts and that man Fergus Brennan (12) rounding
off a very successful week with 31pts in third.

Hessler has a field day at Emerald
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, July 30, The
Emerald – Stableford
As we left Siam Cats today there were a few dark and
dismal clouds in the background and after ten holes at Emerald it had been
raining on us intermittently for 30 minutes and the lead group decided to
quit. The rain eased off however and the rest of the field could continue.
Chris Voller – second at
Emerald on Monday.
The cut in the two divisions was slightly lower today
with 5-15 in division 1 and 16 plus in division 2.
Playing off 5 and just returned from down under, Paul
Bray won division 1 with 38 points, ahead of Chris Voller (37pts) in second
and third place Ian Speirs with 31.
Another Welsh boy who has just joined us and playing off
17 won division 2 with 43 points, Curtiss Hessler is in for the chop. Pepo
Frick was second with 38 points and Ian Hart took third with 31.
There were no ‘2’s in division 1 today and in division
two there are three rollovers to Green Valley next Monday.
Friday, August 3, Eastern Star - Stableford
We were at our regular haunt at Eastern Star on Friday
and for this time of the year cool and pleasant conditions were experienced
for all 18 holes today.
Wilf Latham, still playing off 15, retuned to win
division 1 on 38 points, with Bill Bertram, now living close to the course,
in second with 34 after beating Chris Potter on a 17/14 back nine count
back.
Can you believe 31 points won division 2? There would
have been uproar in Siam Cats (if they had been open on this holiday date)
if Rod Howett had come up to collect his prize with these points. Joe Kubon
was second after beating Bob Poole on a 11/10 back six count back with both
on 30 points.
Near pins went to Bill Bertram, Tony Kay, Jon Lay, Marty
Rock and Roar Berger.
Wilf Latham birdied the 3rd and Marty Rock the 6th to
share the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while there are now three rollovers in
division 2 to next Friday.
There is a public holiday next Monday so a 36-hole
competition will be held on the 10th and 13th sponsored by the rollover
kitty.
Finally our Chiang Mai golfing week has been finalised for the third week
of October, departing on the 20/21st and playing four rounds of golf on
Mon/Tues, Thurs & Fri, and ladies included for the week of course.

The turnout for our Monthly Medal is getting better and
better, and on this day there were 36 golfers who joined us for the July
stroke play competition at Green Valley. That’s a good number for this
terrible low season, compounded by bar closures for local elections and
holidays on the weekends. It’s tough to make a buck when they don’t let you
open the bar!
We have seen many new faces and some old friends come
back in the last week, just as the flow of the tides. Dan Avon has played
with us many times over the years, but not had much success in getting to
the top of the podium. That all changed this week with his double victory,
and started with a fine 67 to win our Monthly Medal for July. Don’t ask, he
already has had his shirt made so look for Dan with his first medal star on
a fresh Antigua white shirt!
Dan spoiled the chances of a certain gentleman from the
Indian sub-continent by the name of Chaten Patel who vied for a 2-in-a-row
medal win. Not to be this time mate, Dan pipped you by two strokes so very
nicely done anyway with that 69.
We appreciate you guys coming out to join us and
sincerely thank you for your support of The Golf Club. We are having a 2-day

Dan Avon did it again for a rare back to back victory to claim the top spot
for the week. Even with 2 shots cut, Dan had another great round and just
beat out our Irish buddy John Mulrooney by one stroke for the win.
Mulrooney is the reigning “Tour Caddy of the Year” as
voted by fellow tour caddies and PGA Tour golfers and golf journalists as he
bagged for Darren Clarke and their win at last year’s Open Championship.
Rich McPhatter nudged out Mike Newbert on count back for
third place with a couple of 33’s on their cards to round out the winners
list for this week. We are back here at Khao Kheow on Aug. 15 so drop by and
sign up. Thanks again guys, and keep it in the fairway!

Williams untouchable all week
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, July 30, Green
Valley – Stableford
Only a small group of golfers today for what would turn
out to be a slow round which was further interrupted by a 20 minute rain
break.
Geoff Williams (right),
3-time winner this week.
The Green Valley management have decided yet again to
change the layout of the course, now starting on the par 5 (formerly the 3rd
hole), hence avoiding the starting on the most difficult hole on the course.
If my memory serves me right this was the layout 2 or 3 years ago, and
personally I feel it’s a much better option – difficult to understand why
they ever bothered messing it around – but this is Thailand!
Today was all about deciding the Golfer of the Month
title, and John Graham’s second place was enough to give him the one point
he needed to pip Barry Murnin by the narrowest of margins. The winner on the
day was Geoff Williams who was also the only player to better his handicap.
1st Geoff Williams (17) 39pts
2nd John Graham (10) 36pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 37pts
Near Pins: Tony Robbins and William Macey
Wednesday, August 1,Khaow
Kheow – Stableford
A good turnout today, with 4 groups of golfers heading
off under overcast conditions to tackle the A and C courses.
The course was quiet and in good condition, so there was
no reasonable explanation for the dismal scores that were returned. Khaow
Kheow is one of those courses which golfers either love or hate, and it can
certainly punish you if you’re not on your game - but there’s no denying
it’s one of the best courses in the area.
Once again Geoff Williams was the only player to better
his handicap, and his reward is a 2 shot cut in his handicap since last week
– it’s a tough sport, this golf game.
1st Geoff Williams (16) 37pts
2nd Geoff Cox (14) 32pts
3rd Tony Robbins (14) 31pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Geoff Parker, Geoff
Parker and Tony Robbins
Friday, August 3,Crystal
Bay – Stableford
Today was a Buddha holiday and we also had a contingent
of regulars playing in the Jackelope tournament so it was left to the true
hardcore Bunker Boys to tackle the Crystal Bay course.
We set off in very light drizzle for the first 3 holes
(barely enough to bother opening the umbrella) and then the rest of the
round was played in near perfect conditions. Even though it was a holiday
the course was quiet, and the round was completed comfortably in under 4
hours.
The fairways and greens were in good shape and Geoff
Williams continued his great run of form, scoring 39 points for the second
time this week - also winning three games in a row! Some of Geoff’s
competitors are starting to get desperate to find his secret, and PJ was
heard to ask him if the tee he was using was legal!
1st Geoff Williams (16) 39pts
2nd John Graham (10) 36pts
3rd Geoff Parker (12) 35pts
The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who
currently play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why not come and join us.
We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome. For
more information call Dave on 087 1469978, email
[email protected].
Note: The Bunker Boys are now searching for a new home,
after being informed this week that the Bowling Green will close in two
months time. We’ll keep you informed of developments, but if you have any
suggestions regarding a suitable bar in Central Pattaya, that would welcome
a group of dedicated golfers (and drinkers) year round, we’d be happy to
hear from you.
The society is also in the process of resurrecting their website which
you can find at http://www.bunkersociety.com. You can also contact us by
email at [email protected].

Captain Damrong wins 2012 Jackalope Open
The famous Jackalope trophy.
At the turn of the last millennium, a pair of local expat
Canadians, Mark Gorda and Glen Dragland dreamed up the idea of holding a
charity golf tournament with a Canadian theme in order to raise funds for
their friends at the El Shaddai Home for Abandoned Children in Sri Racha.
Thus was born the Jackalope Open (apparently they thought a moose too big to
fit on a trophy) and the tournament would find an early spiritual home at
The Hare House, with owner Stephen Beard offering his golfing knowledge and
organizational skills to help the two Canucks get their ambitious
undertaking off the ground.
The tournament would see its first incarnation in 1998
(it wouldn’t be actually be called The Jackalope Open until one year later)
and over 20,000 baht was raised for charity at the initial event. Since then
it has grown and gone on to exceed all expectations and is now one of the
major annual fund raisers for the Jesters Care for Kids Charity.
Tournament organizer Mark
Gorda, center, receives a certificate of appreciation from Jesters Care For
Kids representative Lewis “Woody” Underwood, right, while Peter Malhotra, MD
of media sponsors Pattaya Mail Media stands left.
So it was that after a week of rain in the Pattaya area,
Friday August 3rd 2012 started with a slight, early
morning shower and cloudy skies as 120 golfers made their way to the Khao
Kheow Country Club for the 14th annual Jackalope Open
– dedicated to good friend and founder of the Jackalope Glen “Lassie”
Dragland, who sadly passed away earlier in the year.
Registration opened at 10:30 and after checking in most
of the players headed for their favorite spots – the Caesar table for the
Canadian breakfast speciality and the 50-50 table for the much wanted raffle
tickets. By 11:30 everyone headed out to the golf course ready for the
shotgun start, and much anticipation hung in the air as individuals prepared
their minds towards a good round; of course some of the golfers were
thinking when they would see the first “refreshment” cart.
At 12:00 the shotgun was fired and the golfers were off,
a true test of golf on the slightly damp fairways. The field moved around A
& B courses with not too many hold ups encountered and after just five hours
the first groups arrived back at the club house. The golfers were treated to
a splendid buffet provided by the Khao Kheow staff while they waited for
their scorecard to be checked and tabulated.
Division 1 winner Doug Lynch,
left, receives his prize.
Mark Gorda – wearing his now world famous Jackalope
Jacket kicked off with the technical prizes. Near pins were won by the
following: Hole A3 - Larry Immethun, Paul Erb, Andy Evans & Janthorn Kuanha;
Hole A5 - Keith Taylor, Paul Daud & Gai Wilanan; Hole B3 - Larry Immethum,
Moe Deverdenne, Chris Harkins & Herman Rowland Jr.; and Hole B8 - Thomas
Reihsteiner, Gavin Wright, Bond Phillips & Herman Rowland Jr. Long drive
awards meanwhile went to Egon Nielsen, Paul Ovens, Mark Holcomb and Tai
Kanchana.
The much anticipated 50-50 draw prizes were picked with
the winner receiving half of the record setting total of 255,000 baht
collected on the day thanks to the aggressive ticket selling by Derek, Woody
& Bjarne and others who sold in excess of 4,500 raffle tickets. The winner
Dave generously donated a sizeable amount of his half back into the charity
fund.
Division 2 winner John Helm.
The Ladies division runner up was Oy Galbraith with 32
points. First place in the Ladies division was won by Janthorn Kuanha with
33 points.
In the Rabbits division runner up was Alex Beviss with 35
points and winning the Rabbits division was Jim Simpkins with 44 points.
Some unbelievable points scored in the Rabbits division again this year.
First place in Division 3 went to John Gibson with 40
points ahead of Bernie Morris with 38 points and Bobbie Taylor with an even
par 36.
In the second division, John Helm’s 39 points just edged
Neil Hunter into second by a single point and Moe Deverdenne took third a
further point back on 37.
Division 3 winner John
Gibson.
The winner of Division 1 was Doug Lynch with a fine 40
points, while Bob Finley took second with 39 points after winning a count
back over third placed Ty Kerr. Doug Lynch also took the low gross honours
on the day with his round of 70 off the stick.
Now to the big one, and the 2012 Canadian Jackalope
Champion was declared as Captain Damrong with a great 42 points.
Unfortunately he was called away before being presented with the Jackalope
Trophy, hence no photo of the main trophy being awarded. Captain Damrong’s
team included Captain Steve Ponter, Kim Fletcher and Dan McLean.
Mark Gorda and Mr. X, in their never ending quest to
generate funds for the tournament, have pledged to donate 2,000 baht for
every birdie and 10,000 baht for every eagle scored on the day. This year’s
tournament recorded 45 birdies and 3 eagles.
Thanks go to all the staff at Khao Kheow Country Club for
their excellent service provided on the day. The tournament organizers would
also like to thank the following businesses and individuals who either
donated their time and staff or helped to raise an outstanding amount in
excess of 400,000 for the 2012 charity fund:
Ladies winner Janthorn Kuanha
receives her trophy.
Ann & Dale Drader, Baltex Industries, Big Mango
Properties, Bobby Taylor, Clayton Taylor, Jacob Taylor & Nam Muiller, Caf้
Kronberg, Chris Harkins, Dan Buchinski, Derek Reaper, Glencore Industries,
Jelly Belly Candy Factory, Jesters M.C., Just Burgers, Kelly Caron, Ken
Cooke, Kennedy Consulting Thailand Ltd., Las Vegas Bar, Little Britain
Merchants, Mark Gorda, Matt Millar, Mermaid Offshore Services, Michael
O’Halloran, Mike Peeters, Moe Deverdenne, Neil Sandilands, Nova Group,
Pattaya Mail, Pattaya Sports Club, Paul Erb, Ray Lepard, Rich Man Poor Man
Guest House, Rich Wibrow, Rick & Todd Moran, Steve Mascari, Tahitian Queen,
The Beaver Bar, The Golf Club – Brad Sproxton, The Haven – Stephen Beard,
The Kerr Family (Jason, Mamo, Muffy & Ty), The Links – Russell Exley, The
Palm Tree Restaurant & Bar – Glen Fiala, Todd Sherbaniuk, Vance Reesor,
Wayne Ogonoski.
We would also like to thank all the individuals who
helped out at the registration and scoring, Eddie’s staff for the sandwich
snacks, the Caesar table “All Star Mixers”, the 50-50 ticket sellers, Just
Burgers and all the cart drivers who kept the golfers well stocked with
their favorite “refreshments”.
Special thanks also go to the staff at Rich Man Poor Man
who on their own raised 47,120 baht.
The Jackalope is not just about golf, it is also about
giving back to the local community. On this 14th year
of The Canadian Jackalope Open we will again be joining with the Jesters
Care For Kids to help provide much needed assistance to the poor or
disadvantaged children in the area.
Celebrations on the green –
another putt drops.
Beautiful Khao Kheow was the
setting for the 14th Jackalope Open.

Stuvik overtakes 17 cars in superb
Dutch race recovery
Sandy Stuvik on the Assen
racetrack.
Sandy Stuvik arrived for the first time at
the northern Dutch circuit of Assen for the first time for this 4th round of
the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC series. The Thai driver quickly got to terms
with the track and started setting good lap times on the 2 free practice
sessions. In the Friday qualifying sessions, he was determined to set a lap
time amongst the 8 fastest cars and felt he had a good chance for a top
position.
His qualifying session was cut short though as Sandy made
a mistake going into the final chicane before the start straight and at well
over 200 km/h, lost control of the car and hit the barriers, thereby
ensuring he would fill the 30th and last starting position for both the
weekends two races.
Stuvik in the pit lane having
secured a 13th place finish in Race 2.
In the first race the team opted controversially to save
on tires and sent the Thai racers out with a set of old tires. Although
Sandy managed to gain some positions and in the end a single point for his
20th place finish, he was not satisfied with settling for a strategic
session.
In race 2 Sandy again started from 30th and last position
after Saturday’s qualifying crash, he was though pumped for a strong show in
Sunday’s race at the Dutch Assen TT circuit.
Dark clouds were coming in from the North Sea as the 30
young racers from 17 different nations lined up on the grid, but all opted
to start the race on slick tires. The Thai driver got off to a very strong
start and forced his way up the field from the first lap. By the third lap
he was already up 10 positions and continued overtaking 1 or 2 cars every
lap. By lap 12, with 4 minutes to go, Sandy was up to 12th position, but the
rain clouds had reached the circuit with heavy rain opening up and the race
was red flagged for safety reasons. As the positions after a red flagged
race are determined by the position on the previous lap, Sandy was then
given 13th place.
All in all the young Thai driver felt satisfied having
overtaken a total of 17 cars on his race up the field and clearly now feels
that he genuinely can race amongst the best drivers in this very competitive
championship.
Following Sandy’s stunning recovery race in Assen, he is
still in 10th place in the Northern European Championship with 83 points. He
said after the race; “Now I know I truly can race amongst the fastest junior
racers in Europe and look forward to again be fighting in the top for the
next round at Red Bull Ring in Austria in 3 weeks time”.
Sandy Nicholas Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile
Association of Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha
Corporation, Dacon Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Pattaya archer equals Olympic top score
Somporn and his perfect score
of 30.
Olympic Games fever has come to Pattaya Archery Club and
now club members are trying to compare their shooting skills with those of
the Olympic archers they have been watching on their television screens.
The Olympic Games archery competition requires archers to
shoot several sets of three arrows at a target 70 metres away. Those readers
of this newspaper who have watched the Olympic archery competition will have
seen that even world-class archers don’t always get their three arrows into
the gold centre of the target (“bulls-eye” to non-archers). Many arrows were
missing the gold and landing in the red zone or worse.
The centre ring of the gold scores 10 points and the
outer ring of the gold scores 9 points, so three arrows in the 10-zone is
perfection! However arrows in the red-zone score 8 points or 7 points, and
at Olympic level, just one arrow in the red can, and has, spelt the end of
an archer’s Olympic dreams.
Somporn at full draw.
To everyone’s amazement … and his own … Somporn Kanakaew,
a Thai member of the Pattaya Archery Club, recently shot a perfect score of
30 points with his recurve bow, shooting three consecutive arrows, each one
embedded in the ten-zone … which is just 12cm across.
This was at the Olympic Games distance of 70 metres and
was the club’s first-ever perfect 3-arrow score at this distance.
However what is most impressive is that Somporn had never
shot at a target 70 metres away before! He shot six “sighters” (non-scoring,
range finding and sight adjusting arrows) and then followed by this amazing
three consecutive 10s. Never seen before in Pattaya Archery Club.
Somporn joked that maybe he might be good enough to shoot
for Thailand at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil … but with such an auspicious
start, maybe he is not joking. Who can tell?
As well as Somporn there are a number of recent newcomers
to Pattaya Archery Club who are developing their archery techniques, and so
it won’t be long before they, too, start getting Olympic fever.
Somporn’s
introduction
into archery
Archery is quite an under-represented sport in Thailand,
and so it is interesting to see how Somporn has managed to develop his
archery skills to this enviable level.
Several years ago the Redemptorist Vocational School in
Pattaya asked if Pattaya Archery Club could coach some of its students to a
level where they could compete in the annual Thailand National Games for the
Disabled. Since then the coaching of archery by coaches from Pattaya Archery
Club has been a regular feature in the Redemptorist Vocational School’s
programme.
Archery is one of the few sports where disabled people
can compete on equal terms with able-bodied archers. Indeed, a disabled New
Zealand lady, Neroli Fairhall, qualified to compete against able-bodied
archers in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Somporn’s interest in archery is a result of the coaching
he received by the club’s involvement with the disabled students of the
Redemptorist Vocational School.
Since then he has bought his own equipment and regularly
practises at the club’s range in the Pattaya Shooting Park in Hua Yai.
Olympic archery equipment
As television viewers of the Olympic archery will have
seen, the modern Olympic-style recurve bow has a sight, front and side
stabiliser rods and multi-layer high-tech limbs. The string is made from
specially woven man-made material and the arrows are narrow aluminium tubes
covered with a carbon layer and are incredibly straight. The fletchings are
curly-shaped plastic and less than 2 inches in length.
All this is a far cry from the longbows of Robin Hood’s
time. In those days the bow was a bent stick with no sight, the string was
usually made from linen, and the arrows were made of wood and might have
been semi-straight (if one was lucky). The fletchings were made from turkey
or goose feathers and could be 5 to 7 inches in length.
All of the archery equipment recently seen at the Olympic
Games is easily available and can be delivered within a week of ordering.
Mastering it will take a bit longer though!
Trying archery
in Pattaya
Pattaya Archery Club shoots on Tuesdays, Thursdays,
Saturdays and Sundays, beginning at 10.00 am and finishing at about noon or
thereafter. Anyone % Thai or farang, young or old, man or woman % is welcome
to come along to the Pattaya Shooting Park in Hua Yai and find out what it
is all about.
Beginners’ Coaching is held on a Tuesday and/or a
Saturday. The Coach’s services and the use of the club’s bows, arrows and
other equipment are free for beginners, and so it costs nothing to see if
this challenging sport is for you.
For more details visit Pattaya Archery Club’s website at
www.pattayaarcheryclub.com, or telephone Eric, the club’s President, on 089
535 1193.

United game called off after freak storm floods pitch

A torrential downpour soon after kick-off led to Pattaya
United’s match against Police United being cancelled last Sunday night in
Bangkok.
The match had barely got underway before the rain started
and with the pitch quickly becoming waterlogged and unplayable, the referee
led the teams off the field. Despite the best efforts of the stadium
workers, they were unable to clear the standing water on the playing surface
and the match was duly abandoned.
None of the bottom clubs managed to take advantage of
Pattaya’s weekend off as only TTM Chiangmai and BBCU picked up any points
but it was not enough to dislodge Pattaya from 13th
place in the league standings.
Chonburi FC meanwhile lost further ground on the league’s
runaway leaders Muang Thong United as the Sharks could only draw 0-0 at home
with bottom club TTM Chiangmai.
Pattaya United’s next fixture is on Sunday, August 12
away at leaders, Muang Thong.

Just Burgers takes 2 out 3 over Sunrise Tacos in softball
Adam blasts a ball way over
the fence.
Sunday August 5th saw 25 players
come out to the best softball field in Asia at the Thai Polo Club for the
weekly Pattaya Sports Club games. Dan from Bangkok came down and led the
Sunrise Tacos team to a 15-8 win in the first game. They scored 8 in the 2nd
inning and Just Burgers never got close after that.
Shawn Marcoon stole a home run from Rodney Thomas with an
outstanding catch leaning over the outfield fence. New player Martin
Gansborg, who had been studying the correct batting form all week, blopped
about 5 balls about 20 feet past 3rd base, they landed
so close together next week we are thinking we will place a five gallon
bucket out there to catch the balls.
In the second game Adam Sowell, who actually still plays
professional minor league baseball, blasted 2 home runs for Just Burgers.
Bruce Deeter and Rickey Roberts also had some solid hits and fine defensive
plays as well.
Sunrise Tacos 3rd baseman Ben
Reiber finally got on the home run leader board with a ball over the left
field fence, but it wasn’t enough as Just Burgers took game two 15-12.
Laughing Rick Harris showed his outstanding hitting
skills in the third game, going 5 for 5 at the plate. Late in the game Andy
Emory had an inside the park home-run to right field which scored 3 runs,
which gave Just Burgers the win 11-5 in game three.
There were laughs and smiles all afternoon with a few
more smiles after the game as some of the guys stopped on the way home to
quench their thirst and lighten their wallets while make new friends with
the locals.
PSC Softball is always looking for new players regardless
of skill level, experience or time away from the game. We have players of
all ages and many countries, who enjoy an afternoon of fun and exercise with
a bunch of great guys. We have some spare gloves and everything else you
need, so come on out and check us out at the best softball field in Asia. We
play every Sunday at 12 noon to about 4PM at the Thai Polo Club.
For more information check out the softball page at the
PSC website www.pattaya sports.org or call or email John Stockton at

Coco Club indoor lawn bowls sees another first
July league winners with their
trophies.
The Sunday pairs league was completed last week with Pin
and Brian taking the honours from Harvey and Lars Bratt from Sweden – who is
believed to be first Swedish indoor lawn bowler medalist! The “favourites”
Thanom and Lek had to settle for third place – but they will be back.
The triples league was back to normal with Lek, Thanom
and Pukky winning the league from Dave the “pro”, Coco’s Sue and Kelvin.
However the Cup was won by the later three - who appeared sober on the day -
by an amazing 18 -1 scoreline!
The mixed doubles will conclude in a couple of weeks with
Mike and Coco’s Sue probably being the favourites with a comfortable 6
points lead from Margaret and Johnny Mac - but that could change.
The Queens Day tournament on the 12th August is full with
32 players - starting at 2.00pm and will be fun, just pop in and watch. New
leagues are starting and new bowlers are always welcome - come for a free
training session with our lady tutors. Call Sue on 087 135 8357 to book a
time.
