place after taking all four points from VFW Post 9876. Kran Nielsen bowled a
248 game, 607 series and Morn Mack had a 209 game and 550 series for
Kronborg. VFW did not bowl badly with Ooy Pluemkamon bowling a 209 game, 565
series and Pao Orawan had a 510 series but they were just out gunned by
Kronborg. VFW dropped from third to fifth place.
Bavaria moved up two places in the standings after
winning four points from Canada. Both teams had trouble with lanes 9 and 10
and pin counts were not good.
Mitt in 2012 took three points from Green Tree. Green
Tree dropped from second to fourth place. Yeow Gale bowled a 206 game, 518
series for Mitt in 2012 and Noodle Russell had a 218 game and 512 series for
Green Tree. Nok Ostbo had a 528 series bowling as a spare.
Indiana won four points from first place Brother D and they moved from
seventh to sixth place. Tue Pettae bowled a 543 series for Brother D.

Pattaya Sports Club Sea-Fishing Report
![](pic/s7-PSC%20fishing.jpg)
Newcomer to fishing, Jee
Costello, centre, is joined in the photo by her father Lou, Ray, Joe and
Sollie.
Capt. Dean
I don’t know how long this lousy weather will continue.
When it is not bad local weather, storms east of Thailand have been creating
heavy waters making fishing conditions quite difficult. Nevertheless, many
of us are still brave (or foolish) enough to tackle the heavy winds and
consequent abnormally large swells.
Six of us departed Khram Marine at our usual time of
07:00 hours on Saturday 4th August and braced ourselves for a hard day’s
fishing. The heavy seas caused the captain to move from our usual waters to
the leeward of several islands. Fortunately good sized pladang (around 5 to
the kilo) were abundant, which was extremely lucky as there were few other
fish caught for the day.
Average bag catches ranged from 5 to 8 kilos per head so
we were all satisfied by the end of the day and arrived back in good
spirits. No large fish were caught making this the second straight trip with
no success.
Again, undaunted by the continuing bad weather, seven of
us set out the following week on Thursday 9th August in far from ideal
conditions. Heavy swells made fishing difficult and we relocated to quieter
waters where we were fortunate to have pladang jumping onto our hooks. Very
few other fish were caught except for one large grey cod around 2ฝ kilo
landed by Peter.
We welcomed 4 newcomers on this trip, Lou Costello, his
daughter Jee, Ray and Joe. This was Jee’s first time on a boat and she
handled the conditions admirably and assisted Dad in adding to his day’s
catch.
Whilst we were limited to pladang, we all had bag catches
of 4 to 6 kilos and voted the day as a successful trip, all planning to go
on future trips but preferably when weather conditions improve.
Next trip on 18 August is fully booked but there are 2
places available on 23 August our last trip for this month.
Call Dene Mundy (081 862 6279) for bookings.

Nuan wins Chad’s Birthday Cup
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pic/s8-Outback.jpg)
Tuesday winners (from left)
Ike Ward, Kathy Doody, Chad Campbell, Nuan Keddie and Sugar Ray Handford.
Monday, August 6, Burapha
– Stableford
We had twenty-three players for Burapha on an overcast
and windy day. Again nobody on the course and we teed off at 9.30 instead of
10 and everybody was finished and showered by 1.45, which left all afternoon
for Bernie to finish his business.
B and D again, a strange combination, but all players had
a day out playing from the white markers. The B nine was in good condition
but looked a little scruffy around the greens, while D course has recovered
well from the recent renovations although the areas where the greens have
been enlarged have still have a little way to go, but overall the course was
in good condition.
A few newcomers for the day so welcome to Paul Bray,
Graeme Hiscock, Paul Cohen and Peter Henshaw and welcome back to Ed Delaney,
Laurie McBride and Colin Goon.
Some good scores but the best for the day was John
O’Keefe with 39 points to win Div B from Peter Henshaw on 37 and also from
Rosco Langoulant (Div A winner) and Paul Bray both on 38 points.
There were only three ‘2’s - from Andy Makara and Ken
Young on B3 and Paul Bray on B8.
Div A (0–14)
1st Rosco Langoulant (13) 38pts
2nd Paul Bray (5) 38pts
3rd Stephen Mann (9) 36pts
Div B (15+)
1st John O’Keefe (17) 39pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (20) 37pts
3rd Greg Hill (20) 35pts
Monday, August 6, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
There were 8 Outbackers today playing A & C at Khao
Kheow. Starting on A gives us all a gentle warm-up hole with no water to
capture our balls or OB before being kicked hard on the second, third, and
fourth. Both loops were in good condition and the caddies are working on the
fairways as they do on most courses when the numbers are down, so the course
has improved since last month.
The greens were generally very quick and in great
condition and the only hole where the fairway was GUR was C4, but that
wasn’t an issue for the likes of some of us (i.e. John Lawton who’s always
in the rough).
Welcome to Kissy’s friends who played with us for the
first time, Denis, Richard & David and well done Denis for the win with
35pts.
There were two ‘2’s from Suzi (5th)
and David Fletcher (17th).
1st Denis Steel (16) 35pts
2nd Keith Buchanan (13) 34pts
3rd Phil Waite (13) 34pts
Tuesday, August 7, Pattaya
C.C. – Stroke-play
A very special day for 42 Outbackers at Pattaya Country
Club, special enough for many who wouldn’t normally play here; but why
today? Because it was Chad’s 70th birthday! This is
Chad’s course; this is where he is a member and plays most of his golf
(three times per week) as well as being the regular Tuesday organiser here
for the Outback.
Well, today was his day off from normal duties, as Capt’
Steve and Suzi got everybody away and General Jack processed all the scores
into three divisions, which included a separate ladies division and of
course an overall winner; just to give us all a bit of a challenge. He
(Chad) also elected that the format should be medal (stroke-play).
Pattaya C.C. had done a good job in preparing the course
and the greens were running pretty good. Perhaps a couple of items of more
modern machinery would have enabled them to cut a few more fairways but all
in all it was the best it’s been for some time. Well done PCC.
The prediction was that the scores would be low but with
the exception of the overall winner the scores were about right, with the
competition standard score being set at 72 for both the ladies and the men.
Nuan Keddie was the surprise winner with a fantastic net
65 and bearing in mind that the girls played the first loop off the reds and
the second of the regular men’s tee (whites), Nuan had done really well. One
of her playing partners, Sugar Ray, also did well to win Div A with a net 71
from the wily Bobby Driggs (73) and Paul Greenaway, also with 73 and the
best low gross round of the day, 82.
Div B, was won by a newcomer to the Outback but known to
members at Pattaya C.C., Ike Ward, with a net 69, from the surprise
runner-up and one of Chad’s playing partners, John (the tosspot) Lawton.
Playing with John is an experience in itself; starting off on the first tee
with a beer in your hand at 8.45 in the morning is perhaps not many people’s
idea of the most ideal way to start a round of golf, but if you’re going to
play with John, you just know it’s going to happen.
Chad often plays well on this course and today was no
exception for the first nine holes, as he hit fairway after fairway followed
by putt after putt to reach the turn in 42 gross. However, as the round
progressed and the beers kicked in Chad could only return a 54 on the back
and the dream was shattered whilst John just soaked up the beer, to score an
amazing net 70, to take second place; made even more remarkable by the fact
he could only manage 20pts in 18 holes the previous day at Khao Kheow.
The best of the ladies, other than Nuan, was Kathy Doody
on net 78.
Back at the bar there was food all round courtesy of Chad
and many of the Pattaya C.C. caddies also came to the bar to join in the
fun, something which many of them are getting well used to, as it seems to
be becoming a regular occurrence here at the Outback.
Chad also sponsored four near pins which were won by Bob
St. Aubin, Jim Payne, Bobby Driggs and Pottsy.
Thanks for the day Chad and Happy Birthday mate!

Wednesday, August 8, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
Another great day at a great course and as per usual it
was in good condition with everything presented perfectly from a golfer’s
perspective: Great fairways, good bunkers, even though they have had some
recent heavy rain, and flat, fast greens. Good weather for golf also as it
was overcast and threatening to rain but never actually did.
Fast play and all groups finished in under four hours,
just a great pace of play and the scores I think reflect that; the course
inspires golfers to play better even if they are not in great shape.
No ‘2’s, so paid down to fifth position with the round of
the day being recorded by Andre Coetzee with 39 points on his 7 handicap
from Bobby Driggs with 38 points on his 14 handicap, good golf from both
players.
For the record we played the B & C nines from the white
tees and there were 13 players (welcome back to Mark Gagliardi).
1st Andre Coetzee (7) 39pts
2nd Bobby Driggs (14) 38pts
3rd Steve Poznanski (14) 35pts
4th Rosco Langoulant (12) 34pts
5th Chris Davisson (11) 34pts
Friday, August 10, Green
Valley - Stableford
Thirty-four players at Green Valley for our regular
Friday competition; the course was in good condition and the greens have
been quickened up as well but have remained reasonably receptive. Over the
last couple of weeks, flags have appeared on the fairways and tees where
areas needed to be repaired; that is now being implemented, and the course
just gets better as a result.
A good day for golf, a light breeze, slightly overcast
and cool conditions and that made for some great scoring especially from the
Div A golfers with those on 36 points or less not getting a mention. Great
pace of play with very few hold-ups and the 9.30 tee time proves to be
working.
The quality line-up of golfers in Div A (0–11), were led
in by Graeme Hiscock, playing off 8 with an excellent 39pts, followed home
by course specialist, Paul Greenaway (9), on the same score with third place
going to Colin Goon, a 4 handicapper, with 38.
Sel Wegner, having his first came back here for a few
weeks, had already made it clear that he was playing well, ahead of the big
Hua Hin trip just two weeks away; as he proved it today with a fine 39pts to
win Div B. Both the second and third placed guys, Bernie (37pts) and David
(36pts) will also be fancying their chances a bit on the same trip.
Welcome back to Shin Akatani, here for a few rounds and
well done to Paul Rodgers for his Div C win with 35pts and also to Jingjo
(Martin O’Neill) for his second with the same 35.
There was only one ‘2’ today, on the fourth hole, coming
from Andre Coetzee.
Div A (0-11)
1st Graeme Hiscock (8) 39pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (9) 39pts
3rd Colin Goon (4) 38pts
Div B (12-16)
1st Sel Wegner (12) 39pts
2nd Bernie Stafford (13) 37pts
3rd David Day (16) 36pts
Div C (17+)
1st Paul Rodgers (17) 35pts
2nd Martin O’Neill (29) 35pts
3rd Ricky Poe (28) 30pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km
from Sukhumvit Road along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join
us for a beer and a hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or
call Jack on 087 941 2474.

Willem & Owen are the gems at Emerald
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, August 7, Rayong
C.C. - Stableford
First to Tuesday, when we travelled east on Hwy 36 and
turned left to travel to the sometimes maligned Rayong Country Club. This
course has several of the more challenging holes in the area, #4 & #18
spring to mind immediately, with pars hard won on both these holes. The
course was in decent condition and when considering the price structure
offered by the club, it is good value, especially when compared to some of
the self proclaimed ‘A’ courses.
![](pic/s10-Mulligans.jpg)
Willem Lasonder.
Jeff Wylie (5) continued his good form, playing
particularly well on the back 9 to sign for a solid 38 points, next best
being the recently returned Allan Cassin (12) with 33 points. Near pins were
shared around between Phill, Owen, Jeff & Willem.
Thursday, August 9, The
Emerald - Stableford
Thursday was again a journey east on Hwy 36, this time
turning right and making our way to Emerald, another Nick Faldo course which
provides its own particular test, and although comparatively short, its
undulating fairways make it a reasonable challenge. The greens here have
returned to good condition following maintenance over the previous few
months.
Willem Lasonder (22) continued his return to form, after
a lengthy lay-off, holding off Owen Walkley (12) on count back to the last 6
holes, 13/11, after both returned 37 points. Willem was in particularly good
form on the par 3s, with 3 near pins, while visitor Paul secured the other.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday
& Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Dale doubles up for the week
PSC golf from The Blue Moose Sports Bar
![](pic/s11-Blue%20Moose.jpg)
Monday’s top two, Dale Murphy,
left, with Arnold.
Monday, August 6, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
The turnout was better at Pattaya Country Club with 7
golfers showing up, including our 2 lady golfers just back from playing in
the Jackalope Open. Oiy missed the long drive prize by driving the ball
through the fairway while Jan had a closest to the pin and took 1st
place in the women’s division. The Moose was well represented at the
tournament as our manager Gay also had a closest to the pin.
Dale Murphy returned to golf today after a back injury
and took first place with 42 points. Arnold, back in town, came in second
with 38 points while last week’s winner Bruce was back to reality and 28
points.
At the start of golf there was no wind and the gnats were
out in force. Oiy and Jan made some attire changes to address the problem of
gnats in the ears.
Wednesday, August 8, Green
Valley - Stableford
Green Valley was the venue for the Blue Moose Wednesday
golfers. Discussions before starting out covered how the management keeps
changing the hole sequence here. Well sure enough they did change: Hole #1
is now the old hole 1 on the par 5 with traps in the middle; the old hole 1
is now hole #3 over the water; and hole #4 is now the par 3 which follows
the new #1. Hope everyone is confused.
Dale Murphy continued his winning ways with a score of 37
points to top the podium. Joe St. Laurent was the one to beat after scoring
22 points on the front 9 but he collapsed with only 10 points on the back 9
to finish in second.
Ciano Glavino returned to the fold from Australia and Mark Campbell
informed us this was his last round as he heads back to work.

Strickleton scores
on debut appearance
The Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society
![](pic/s12-Phoenix994.jpg)
Tuesday’s winners pose with
Ann from Ann’s Salon and the staff of The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, August 27,
Phoenix – Stableford
Once again I cannot tell you enough about the superb
condition of Phoenix Golf Club at present - and it’s made even better by the
course being very quiet regarding players.
Listening to stories from around the town it appears that
tourism amongst the golfing fraternity must be well down. It seems that most
groups are experiencing low numbers this year however we are holding our
head above water with nice numbers enjoying the somewhat cooler weather as
well this year. We are not interested in playing the numbers game - quality
of player/person is far more important to our group/society.
Today we welcomed newcomer Gary Strickleton for the first
time, and as usually happens newcomers do not respect the tricky greens of
Phoenix making ignorance, bliss. Gary returned the best score of 35 points
today to be the winner, with Bill Hewitt claiming second place with 32
points.
We also welcomed a new sponsor this week in the form of
Ann’s Salon, with the prize donated by Richard Baldwin (and his good lady)
and because our group rule states that a player must have played 5 times
before claiming any sponsor’s prize, the voucher for Ann’s Salon went to
Bill Hewitt. As you can see from the photo I don’t think Bill will spend too
much time in the hairdresser’s chair! No doubt he will take his good lady to
receive the spoils of the voucher.
The lucky draw prizes (as usual donated by our hosts The
Relax Bar) went to Richard Baldwin (free massage), John “I never win the
lucky draw” Bartley (free drink), and Bob Neylon (free drink).
Anyone interested in joining us for golf should call me (Mike) on 087 091
7565.

Joe Niisato shines in the wet
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 6, Bangpra
- Stableford
CSS 72
1st Joe Niisato (13) 39pts
2nd Al Rolnik (18) 37pts
3rd Jim Lloyd (28) 36pts
4th Markku Tynell (25) 33pts
5th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 30pts
A week when three of the top courses in the area were on
the schedule started at the always difficult Bangpra, with its notoriously
fast and tricky greens where any putt from above the hole is fraught with
great danger. But on this day they stayed fairly benign, although the six to
eight footers from pin high positions were still extremely difficult with as
much as three feet of break down hill. Generally the players scored well
leaving the CSS unchanged for the day at 72.
![](pic/s13-Haven-1.jpg)
Joe Niisato.
Joe Niisato got to terms with the course quickly,
starting out with twenty points on the outward nine, which even included a
zero pointer, and returning back in nineteen, also including a zero, to lead
the field home by two, finishing with nine three-pointers on the day.
He was followed in by Al Rolnik, who started slowly with
sixteen on the front nine but came good over the inward nine with twenty one
points which was just enough to see off the challenge of Jim Lloyd who
started well but faded on the three holes from the tenth, taking just three
points from them and then finishing with a flourish with ten points from the
last three holes to take third place.
Markku Tynell also had a great start at two under
handicap for the first nine but then slipped to finish in fourth after just
thirteen on the back, but was still well ahead of Shuichi Kodaka in fifth
place.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for
Vincent Gras, Ron Kerslake and Jim Lloyd.
Wednesday, August 8, Khao
Kheow - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Barry Winton (5) 35pts
2nd Joe Niisato (13) 34pts
3rd Alwyne Burley (18) 34pts
4th Phillip Cass (23) 34pts
5th Mike Dabanovich (11) 33pts
Khao Kheow is undergoing a tremendous amount of repair
and improvement to the course in general, but the greens require no
attention other than the meticulous care that they have obviously been
having as they turned out to be even flatter and faster than ever, where
putts could be rolled down the line with confidence by all but the clumsiest
of strokes.
![](pic/s13-Haven-2.jpg)
Benny Hansen.
The repairs are all well marked as GUR affording the
player a good opportunity to return a good card but unfortunately the day
was extremely blustery and with the yellow tee markers about as near to the
blues as possible on many occasions, and in a couple of cases new tees that
are longer than the measured distance on the card, scoring was at a premium
with all the places going to the big hitters in the field.
Leading them in was Barry Winton, now seemingly with his
old appetite for the game well back in place, with a solid one over handicap
return although he suffered badly over the closing holes, recording an
unusual number of one-pointers, four in fact, in the space of five holes but
finished with a solid par after missing a difficult four-footer to take the
top spot.
Joe Niisato started slowly this time out as he had a real
mixture on the front starting and finishing the nine with zero pointers but
he finished well enough to win a count back for second place over Alwyne
Burley with a better 13 to 11 over the last six after they had tied the nine
at 18 apiece.
Also in the nine hole count back was Phillip Cass who had
to settle for fourth after ending the nine with 17 points, but he was well
pleased with his day’s efforts which included seven three-pointers.
Mike Dabanovich, who struggled to get to terms with the
speed of the greens for most of the day, slipped into fifth spot after some
prodigious drives that sometimes left even Barry Winton gasping in
amazement.
Once again there were no 2’s in the second division but
Barry Winton beefed up his winnings with the only one in the first division.
Prior to the prize giving there was a welcome back for
Lincoln Burke.
Friday, August 10, Pattana
B & C (Yellow tees) - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Benny Hansen (24) 35pts
2nd Barry Winton (5) 35pts
3rd Phillip Cass (23) 33pts
4th Lincoln Burke (13) 32pts
5th Vincent Gras (19) 30pts
6th Ron Kerslake (26) 30pts
To end the week the group took on their third top class
course, all of which had been available to play at a basic cost for green
fee and caddy of 1,000 baht, which is great value for any golfer who
believes in walking the course for the exercise.
![](pic/s13-Haven-3.jpg)
Barry Winton.
The day’s competition had to be played under the ‘lift
and place’ local rule following very heavy overnight rain, although after
five holes, no doubt due in some part to the very strong winds that buffeted
both the players and the course, it was dry enough to allow carts off the
cart paths and into the rough, for which quite a few of the players were
very grateful, especially those unable to direct their shots towards the
paths. With very little run in the fairways the competition was played from
the yellow tees although many of those were placed back near the whites,
making it a long day for most.
Benny Hansen used his handicap allowance to its full
advantage, ignoring the big shot to the green and settling for two irons
instead on many occasions, which paid full dividend until the 450 yard,
uphill, into wind, eighth on the B course, having started on C, which was
just too far for a par four on the day, where he recorded his only scratch.
He did win the count back for first place, which as usual was taken over the
last nine on the card rather than the order in which they were played, with
a better 21 to 16 ahead of Barry Winton whose weaker finish to the round was
the only blot on a good day that saw him recoup the wager in the day’s
four-ball after losing on Wednesday with the same useless partner who
reportedly writes better than he plays.
Phillip Cass again showed good form with more strong play
from the tee and although he was not so successful with the three-pointers
he still did enough to take third place by a point ahead of another big
hitter in Lincoln Burke, who had started out with just ten points on the
first nine but finished really well with 22 on the back nine to leave him in
fourth place.
Vincent Gras and Ron Kerslake were determined to get on
at least one of the lower steps of the podium in their last outing this trip
and did so, with Vincent getting the better of the count back with a better
20 to 14 as they finished fifth and sixth respectively.
With the par threes extremely difficult to play in the
conditions it was no surprise to find there were no 2’s in either division.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome back for Don
Everett together with farewells for Vince Gras, Ron Kerslake and Jim Lloyd
after another very successful Motor Insurance Assessors Convention in
Pattaya.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

JJ wins at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pic/s14-Backyard.jpg)
JJ and Dan pose for a
photo with the staff at the Blue Sky Bar.
After a few weeks of not having enough players for a
competition it was good to see 7 guys turn up at Emerald Golf Course for
the Backyard Golf Society’s weekly game of golf.
With Bob G. coming back for a few weeks it was all
the usual suspects at the tee and with an empty golf course, although
not in its best condition, we were soon back in the clubhouse for the
prize giving.
JJ came in with 36pts to win the stableford
competition and for the third game in a row everyone managed to miss the
green on the nearest the pin hole!
Skin results were as follows: Bob G. (4), Terry C.
(3), Andy Oz (2), Mike (2) and six rolled over to next week.
Finally congrats to Dan M. for having a very
successful day on Friday!
Joe & Mike have senior moments
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, August 5, Green
Valley - Stableford
1st Mike Craighead (20) 39pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (6) 36pts
3rd Don Lehmer (20) 36pts
Mike ‘the mechanic’ Craighead started the day with glee
as he noted that he was still 19.8, hence 20 on the latest handicap sheet.
Well ironies of ironies, Mike didn’t need that extra shot as he led the low
season flight home with a three shots clear 39 points over both Aussie
Salvatore Brizzi and Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer. Salvatore emerged the
victor in the resulting count back.

pot
Monday, July 30, Royal
Lakeside - Stableford
1st Geoff Kubas (22) 36pts
2nd Joe Tynan (34) 35pts
Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas, everybody’s nice guy, was on song as
he dazzled most of the field with a best of the day solid even par round.
The only guy close to him was good friend Joe ‘Sat nav’ Tynan who was but a
stroke adrift.
Oswald Scott and John Baxter split the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, August 8, St
Andrews - Stableford
1st Paul Bray (5) 40pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (7) 37pts
3rd Joe Tynan (34) 35pts
The society lads and lasses girded their loins as they
took on Desmond Muirhead’s monster. Paul Bray showed he is still riding a
purple patch as he led the brave hearts with a faultless 40 point haul
(gross 75) best of the day.

Joe Tynan.
Australia’s favorite son Salvatore Brizzi stuck his nose
in as he does for the silver, while Joe ‘sat-nav’ Tynan gave indication that
the demons that have been haunting his game had been excised as he came out
of a three-way log jam on top as he made his 35 points look better than
Monsieur Serge Straeten and fellow Irishman John Feehan.
Laurie McBride slotted home the only 2 of the day.
Friday, August 10, Crystal
Bay C&A - Stableford
A Flight
1st Rod Brown (18) 37pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (17)33pts
B Flight
1st Joe Tynan (34) 38pts
2nd Peter Terry (19) 38pts
The last day of the week is usually held on one of the
“local” courses when possible to mitigate Friday traffic. So it was off to
Crystal Bay to play the C&A layouts. Joe ‘Sat-nav’ Tynan showed that youth
and girth wasn’t a requirement as he used his supple power and innate talent
to edge Peter Terry on count back as both posted man of the match 38 points.
In the premier flight Rod Brown continued his fine play
with a flight winning 37 points. Rod was four strokes clear of pay window
regular Aussie Salvatore the ‘Thunder from down under’ Brizzi and Julius
January. Salvatore took the resulting count back for the silver spot leaving
Julius out in the cold.
Salvatore Brizzi and Irishman John Feehan split the 2’s
pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

The Zambian connection
Sea fishing with KPK Food Services Ltd.
![](pic/s16-KPK.jpg)
Paul, Sean, Neil and Bradley
enjoy their day out at sea.
Mike Gerrard
Paul Hayes, with his son Sean, and Neil Watts, with son
Bradley enjoyed their second trip out on the ocean within 10 days. Whilst on
holiday from their jobs in the Zambian mines they wished to spend as much
time fishing as their wives would allow whilst they were here.
As stated on previous reports, the windy weather has
played havoc with the catching of larger fishes, mainly due to the fact the
we do not wish the boat to go out too far and make the trip uncomfortable
for the passengers. So it was staying nearer to calmer waters for the day
and although we did not get a hit on the big rods we did land a huge amount
of smaller varieties such as snapper and grouper etc. Personally I prefer
these to eat as against the larger fish.
I guess that we must have caught about 25 to 30 kilos,
some of which we gave to the boat crew and others we shared out for the two
families on board and me to take to our sponsors for their staff. My freezer
is quite full at present.
I was very pleasantly surprised at how the two young boys
knew what they were doing and they contributed greatly to the total catch.
Even baiting the hooks and taking the fish off as well. Not bad for 6 and 7
years old!
About 4.00 p.m. the men and the boys stated that it was
time for a couple of beers back on terra firma (for the men that is) before
taking the catch home to the ladies.
The next possible trip will be either the 25th or 26th
August and then into September. If anyone is interested please call me
(Mike) on 087 091 7565. It really is a great day out on the ocean!

Ted rises from the ashes
Travellers Rest Golf Group
![](pic/s17-TR%20golf.jpg)
The 4 matchplay winners: Tim
Dalton, Jim Cleaver, Alun Evans and John Dean.
Andy Rich
Wow what a week for competitive sport; the Olympics
reaching its climax with some fantastic performances in numerous events, the
US PGA, the final major of the year, is edging towards a fascinating
conclusion and the new football season is just getting underway.
Not to be outdone, the TRGG threw up some incredibly
close finishes this week with one exception and that came from Ted Senior on
Thursday at Phoenix when he absolutely walked all over the rest of the
field. A few of us demanded a steward’s inquiry and called for a drugs test.
Ted, who has been having a miserable time of late with some very indifferent
golf, was as amazed as the rest of us at his 44 points and stated it was
“better than sex, well almost”. I guess some days everything just goes
right, well done Ted.
On Monday 6th August the TRGG visited Bangpra and Simon
Tapster (17 handicap) immediately banished those Monday morning blues by
taking first place with 37 points. Andrew Curtis (16) was second with 36pts
and Fergus Brennan (12) continued his fine form from the previous week by
taking third place with 34.
Tuesday 7th August was Eastern Stars turn to host us and
it was only after a count back that the two leaders were separated: Seil
Revels, playing off four, just took the honours from Gary Bennett (17) both
finishing on 34 points. Fergus Brennan (12) was third for the second day
running one point behind on 33.
On Thursday 9th August it was our weekly visit to Phoenix
(Mountain and Lakes) and for the first time in a long while we had enough
players for two divisions. We also had a competition within a competition
because eight of us were playing the first round of a matchplay event.
Thanks go to John Dean for arranging that and by
coincidence he was drawn to play me in the first round. I was three up after
eight holes but felt that because of all his hard work it was only right I
let him progress to the next round and duly lost 2 and 1. No in truth he
beat me fair and square and left me feeling like Adam Scott after he let a
similar lead slip in the Open.
Division 1 was for those with a handicap up to seventeen
and as previously stated Ted Senior (13) played some of the best golf of his
life in shooting 44pts and winning by seven lengths from John Baxter (15) on
37pts and Fergus Brennan (12) in third on 36pts. Fergus has now finished
third in the last three events and it just goes to show what a considerate
event organizer he is by letting others in with a chance now he has his golf
game back (see last week’s report).
Division 2 was for eighteen-handicap and upwards and was
won by that wily old fox Alun Evans (23) with 33 points. Marnie Kregor (32)
was second on 31pts and Alan Morgan (30) was third on 30.
On Saturday 11th August it was our regular visit to
Crystal Bay (B and C courses) and once again it was an incredibly close
finish and some very high scoring.
Marathon runner Richard Talbot (21) finished in a dead
heat with Alan Morgan (30) on 41 points but Richard won on count back. Tim
Dalton (20) was third on 40pts. All I can say is either Crystal Bay is
getting easier or all the first three need to hand over some urine samples
for testing.

Williams on the warpath
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn & The
Drut
Monday, August 6, Pattana
- Stableford
Fourteen golfers rocked into the reception at Pattana
golf club and were absolutely delighted to see the staff had dispensed with
photocopying everyone’s PSC members card. So were the Greenies.
Prior to tee-off, Paul Simons exclaimed that his chance
of a podium finish was in a similar bracket as changing a 100 pound note in
a Turkish bazaar. But only time would tell!
![](pic/s18-Growling.jpg)
Double winner Geoff Williams,
left, is congratulated by Peter Blackburn.
We welcomed Australians Geoff Williams from Melbourne and
Dane O’Brien and Jimmy McFarland from Perth.
Playing the B and C nines from the yellow tees, which
contributed to the pleasure of all concerned, the first group completed the
journey in four hours and twenty minutes.
The weather was overcast, a cool breeze prevailed and the
course was in great condition. The greens on the B nine had been lightly
sanded, however they putted truly.
Only one grade today and Geoff Williams blitzed the field
with a great forty two points. Unless Geoff is adept at using a push lawn
mower it is anticipated the handicapper may adjust his mark in a southerly
direction.
In second spot and as happy as a free range chicken was
Martin Todd with seventy-seven off the rod, which equated to thirty eight
points.
Despite commenting that his swing was in need of some
chiropractic attention, Bernie McCart claimed third spot on thirty five
points on a count back from Ebrahim, whilst Neil Skilton with thirty four
points finished fifth.
1st Geoff Williams (16) 42pts
2nd Martin Todd (7) 38pts
3rd Bernie McCart (32) 35pts
4th Ebrahim (12) 35pts
5th Neil Skilton (8) 34pts
Near pins: Ebrahim - B3, Jimmy McFarland - B7, Frank
Donnelly - C2 and Martin Todd - C7
Long putts: Santa Claus - B9 and Neil Skilton -
C9.
Sandy Leiper’s vision of an undertaker and a florist in
close attendance at the 14th tee confirmed his
suspicions that all was not well with his swing. He commented that his game
is to golf what Attila the Hun’s appreciation was of opera. Sandy was
correct, which resulted in him being awarded the Coveted Compass Cap.
Once again Deefa the dog was delighted with the donations
from the players which will go towards assisting the needy of Pattaya.
Thursday, August 9,
Plutaluang West & North – Stableford
It was terrific to be back in Pattaya after 2 weeks in
cold & wet Perth, Western Australia and good to see that the Growling Swan
is as popular as ever. Many thanks to Mike Gosden, Martin Todd, Stu Rifkin
and Ken Bernek for “taking care of business” in my absence, they did a great
job.
There were several new faces (to me) in the field of 16
as we assembled at G.S. prior to our departure for the Navy Course
(Plutaluang) and we welcomed first timer Mike Prili from Florida, U.S.A. and
bade farewell to veteran Kevin Dinan who is returning to Ireland for 5
weeks.
Departing right on time at 8.30 am we arrived at the
course 42 minutes later and although fairly overcast the weather was fine
and not too hot with a fairly stiff breeze. The course seemed fairly busy
but we were able to send away our first of 4 four-balls 15 minutes early at
9.45 am.
The course was looking in very good shape and quite dry
considering the recent wet weather and the greens although much slower than
we are used to at the other courses were in very good condition. It was
mentioned that the holes on most of the greens had obviously not been
re-positioned for a while but all in all a very good value for money outing
at 500 baht green fee plus 220 baht caddy fee.
Although we did not see a lot of sun throughout the round
we did stay completely dry & we were finished in four hours & twenty
minutes.
With the smallish field we had just the one grade with
four spots on the podium. In addition there were rewards for nearest the
pins on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on W9 & N9.
Geoff Williams showed his class by posting another win
with a fine 37 points, 4 points clear of Alain (Inspector Clouseau) Taddei
in second place. A three-way count back on 32 points for third & fourth
spots saw “superstar” Robbie Williams (14 point back nine & 11 points on the
last six holes) finish just ahead of the consistent Martin Todd (14 point
back nine & 9 points on the last six holes). The unlucky golfer was Mike
Allidi (14 point back nine & 8 points on the last 6 holes) whose 77 off the
stick was not enough for a spot on the podium.
1st Geoff Williams (13) 37pts
2nd Alain Taddei (19) 33pts
3rd Robbie Williams (29) 32pts
4th Martin Todd (7) 32pts
Near pins: W3 – Martin Todd; W8 – Mike Gosden; N3
– Geoff Williams; N6 – Graham Buckingham
Long Putts: W9 – Robbie Williams; N9 – Mike Gosden
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was Max Bracegirdle who once again accepted the
“honour” in good spirit. Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who of course
collected many donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan
crew.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 080 635

Baechli bags a brace of victories
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, July 30,
Bangpakong Riverside – Stableford
1st Walter Baechli (18) 40pts
2nd Hugh o Donnell (26) 39pts
3rd Phil Sheppard (19) 39pts
4th Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 37pts
5th Graham Buckingham (23) 33
points
We were off on time to the Bangpakong, arriving at the
course just over 1 hour later. No carts were allowed today because of heavy
overnight rain, and one golfer who needed a cart to get around was left
without a game.
We set off from the first tee on time under drizzly skies
playing 2 holes and stopping for a 20 minute downpour which was the last
significant rain for the day. The course was very wet but was very playable
as the scores would reflect.
Back in the clubhouse after 4 hours and 40 minutes of
slogging around we said “sayanora” to Takeshi Hakozaki who was going back to
Japan for the summer holidays for 3 weeks.
Considering the conditions the scores were quite good
with Walter Baechli coming in with a stupendous 40 points for the win. Hugh
O’Donnell came second with 24 points on the back nine on a count back over
Phil Sheppard in third, both on 39 points. Takeshi Hakozaki took fourth with
37 and Graham Buckingham fifth on a count back from Mike Winfield.
Wednesday, August 1,
Bangpra - Stableford
1st Walter Baechli (18) 34pts
2nd Brian Noguer (21) 30pts
3rd Dave Richardson (25) 30pts
4th Phil Sheppard (19) 30pts
Today it was Bangpra as the venue with an on time
departure and a 40 minute transit from the Kronborg. The course was fully
booked but we got off the first tee on time under sunny skies with a very
good pace of play. The layout was in its usual very good condition with
quick greens.
Back in the clubhouse after a quick round of 4 hours and
20 minutes we welcomed new Pattaya resident Steve Newton from the USA.
After play was finished the course was found to have had
the better of the contest but Walter Baechli still managed to notch his
second victory of the week, this time with 34 points, while Brian Noguer
took second on a count back from Dave Richardson (third) and Phil Sheppard
in fourth, all on 30 points.
Monday, August 6, Crystal
Bay - Stableford
1st Hugh O’Donnell (25) 38pts
2nd Dave Richardson (26) 33pts
3rd Mike Winfield (21) 31pts
4th Phil Sheppard (19) 31pts
It was down Sukumvit on time to the Crystal Bay Country
Club, arriving 47 minutes later. After a swift check-in we teed off on the
B1 hole 28 minutes ahead of schedule under overcast skies and in very muggy
conditions.
The course on the day was quite playable but the
greens-keeper needs to do a lot of repairs on the the physical things that
are part of the course, like drain covers that need replacing, and are a
safety concern, so watch your step here.
After a round of 4 hours we said goodbye in the clubhouse
to Phil Sheppard who is going back ‘Aussie’.
Probably the oldest golfer in regular competitions around
Pattaya, Hugh O’Donnell, was the winner with a runaway 38 points. Dave
Richardson took second on 33 points, and Mike Winfield came third on a count
back over Phil Sheppard.
Thursday, August 9,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
1st Brian Noguer (23) 35pts
2nd Wayne Koch (25) 32pts
3rd Dave Richardson (26) 31pts
4th Hugh O’Donnell (25) 29pts
It was off to Treasure Hill on Thursday, 50 minutes up
the 331, and we were checked in and off the first tee 30 minutes early under
overcast skies and with a nice breeze. The course was in fine condition with
a few areas dug up near the greens to add new drainage, always little
projects to improve the course, well done to the management.
The course is offering a special on Friday’s until 28
September of green fee, caddy fee and cart for 990 baht, subject to cart
availability.
Back in the clubhouse after a quick round of 3 hours and
55 minutes it was evident the course had won again with Brian Noguer winning
among the rest of us with 35 points ahead of Wayne Koch in second, Dave
Richardson third and Hugh O’Donnell in fourth.

Tuesday’s winners.

Tuesday, August 7, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
Now this is a super course, and as we drove up there the
only problem was would the rain come to Khao Kheow? On the journey there we
went through several cloud bursts, but as we approached the course the sun
came out and we hoped it would stay out.
The test for the day was to be the C & A nines in that
order and it is to me the most difficult of all the combinations. With our
first three groups all having one player who did not reach the ladies tee
off the first, the theme for the day was set and although we did not have
rain we had plenty of strong wind, that as usual seemed really fierce
against but dropped when behind.
The C nine was as usual very difficult and is in fact
longer, and in my opinion harder than the A nine, but officially the A nine
is the more difficult. Never mind, on this day they were all most difficult.
They were also both a pleasure to play. The C is a bit more out of the
centre but really tough. The greens were in reasonable shape and also quite
tricky.
Soon over, it was back to the fine clubhouse and into the
showers which are always hot here. Then a quick change and up to the
restaurant which has a fine view. The drive back proved as expected, we
found the rain that had been eluding us all day.
So to the results and we had one flight with a very
unusual winner. The winner with a fine 37 points was Keith Phillips, yes
that is correct - the result of learning that people do get older. In second
place we had Mashi Kaneta with 35 points and in third was Mike Gaussa with
33 points. We then had a count back on 31 points that saw Alan Sullivan in
fourth and and Walter Baechli in fifth.
Near Pins: Bob Lindborg, Keith Phillips, Mashi
Kaneta, Joel Flor
Friday, August 10, The
Emerald – Stableford
We usually play Emerald on a Friday as it sits nicely
into the theme of ‘top class courses’ on a Tuesday and the best ‘second
class courses’ on a Friday. While some of our Friday courses cannot touch
the ones we play on a Tuesday, this one can, when it is in good condition,
come close. It is much played by those who live in Bang Chang and our visit
is usually looked forward to.
This is a typical Nick Faldo course, where if you can get
a level lie you are the lucky one. The ball is always above or below your
feet, or on a side hill, and sometimes both. The approach to most of the
greens is to a narrow putting surface in depth, way above you. Difficult to
hit and a little short will see the ball at your feet. These greens are not
to my liking, a few would be fine, but so many. However it is still a good
and testing day out.
![](pic/s21-Berts%20golf-2.jpg)
Friday’s top two with one of
Bert’s finest.
On this day the course was in reasonable condition, and
the weather was cloudy with just a little wind. Fairway maintenance was good
with some work being done at the entrance to the greens. The greens here are
quite tricky when you finally get to them, and being so narrow, if you get
top side you can end up going back down the hill.
The round was soon over and here you sit in the outside
restaurant, which is really pleasant until the wind gets up. The food here
is good and well priced and the ‘curry’ is really a good deal. Then it was
into cars and back to Bert’s. Which way you went depended on how busy you
thought the traffic would be.
We had one flight and the winner, for the first time with
us, was Mick Coughlan with 39 points. In second was Joel Flor with 36 points
ahead of Mike Gaussa in third with 35 points. We then had a count back on 34
points that saw Dick Warberg in fourth and Don Carmody in fifth. T.T.F.N.
Near Pins: Tom Cotton, Walter Baechli, Alan
Sullivan, Mike Gaussa.

Lawn bowls and fashion go hand in hand
The Queen’s Day indoor lawn bowls tournament and fashion
parade took place on August 12 at the Coco Club in east Pattaya and finished
with three superb Thai lady champions taking the honours.
![](pic/s22-Lawn%20bowls-1.jpg)
Tournament winner Pin with
her trophy.
The bowls tournament - even with a few roof leaks from a
downpour towards the end of the day which did not affect play - was won by
Pin with a superior score over birthday boy Harvey, who even at 70 years old
was dancing the night away, and Dave “the pro”, who is always in the mix.
This was followed by a few beers, buffet and the music
from a super Thai trio group called Black Dog who played while the girls
were getting ready for the fashion parade - which was won on a very strict
customer vote by Pukky, the ladies singles champion, and made husband Alex
very happy, while Pin, the winner of the Queens Day scramble came second and
triples winner Thanom took third. Finishing at nearly midnight everyone
chipped in a good tip for the band to finish the evening off.
If you are interested in playing some indoor lawn bowls,
call Sue on 087 135 8357 or just pop in to the club and join the staff
bowlers for a game from 11.00am onwards.

Pattana closely contested
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society left Soi Buakhao
on Monday, 6th August to visit Pattana for a stableford competition on the B
and C nines off the yellow tees. The day was overcast and cool with a strong
breeze but the course was in top condition with quick greens.
After nine holes scores were very good and quite a few of
the field must have been dreaming of some success but some of the pin
positions on the back nine were tough to navigate and returns became more
realistic.
In third place was Garry Hookey with 35 points whilst it
was left to Evan Millar and Seil Revels to share the win with 37 points
each.
Neil McIntosh recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on
C2. The Booby Bevy went to Mr Len for his highest split figures of the day,
his eleven points on the back nine embarrassing his front nine total of
twenty-one.
Pattana remains a firm challenge for any golfer and a
tight competition normally ensues there.
Almost a PB for PB
On Wednesday, 8th August, the Pattaya Golf Society
visited the fine course at Bangpakong Riverside to play a stableford
competition. The course was superbly presented with lush fairways and
remarkably consistent greens and for golfers on top of their game there was
the opportunity to record excellent scores. and so it was.
The groups all got around in four hours maximum, which is
a testament to the efficiency of the club and its condition.
Sharing third place were Robbie Taylor, Dave Edwards and
Mr Len, all posting 37 points whilst second placed Masashi Iizumi closed his
account this trip with a fine 39 points on the eve of his return to Tokyo.
The winner was the gentle giant Paul Brett who almost matched his best round
in the Kingdom, a composed 42 points at Crystal Bay four years ago. This
time he put together a well managed round of 41 points to win the day
easily.
The only birdie ‘2’ came on the thirteenth and was
recorded by Wichai Tananusorn, who continued to stutter for the rest of the
round. The Booby Bevy went to Mike Wilsher for his low score of the day and
Andrew Purdie enjoyed the Boss’s free beer draw back in Soi Buakhao.
It had been another memorable golf day at Bangpakong.
Honours shared at
Greenwood
The Pattaya Golf Society closed yet another week of golf
on fine courses with a visit to Greenwood on Friday, 10th August to play a
stableford competition on the C and B nines. The fairways are very good at
the moment and the greens are recovering from the scorching of a few months
back but are still quite slow. The big surprise saw an empty course yet
again.
Competition was quite close and one four-ball provided
all the contenders with Joe Niisato finishing on 35 points for third place
and Anthony Molan and Dave Edwards sharing the win with 37 points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Boss’s free beer draw
was won by Mr Len with Dave Corrigan picked up the Booby Bevy for finishing
his round after only sixteen holes.
Thus the PGS golfers ended the week in fine spirits, with
visits to Bangpra and Khao Kheow on the immediate horizon just to help the
holiday weekend go with a swing.

Cooney back in the mix
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, August 6, Phoenix
Mountain & Lakes – Stableford
We arrived at Phoenix to find the course surprisingly
quiet and teed off as soon as we were ready, a few minutes ahead of
schedule. The weather was more reminiscent of high season with clear blue
skies, and several players commented that it was the hottest day they could
remember for the last few months.
![](pic/s24-Bunke.jpg)
Gerry Cooney, the
ex-champion, is on his way back.
The hottest player on the day was unquestionably William
Macey, who carded a back nine score of 21 points, to take the top podium
position. Colin Greig also had a good inward nine to snatch second place by
a single point ahead of arch rival Barry Murnin.
PJ Redmond was a notable absentee today, and it later
transpired that his car had been shunted up the rear on his way to the
Bowling Green in the morning – bad luck PJ, why does it always happen to
you?
1st William Macey (19) 36pts
2nd Colin Greig (8) 35pts
3rd Barry Murnin (15) 34pts
Near pins: Lee Butler, Geoff Parker (2).
Wednesday, August 8, Royal
Lakeside – Stableford
Our trip was longer than usual today due to a minor
accident on the Chonburi bypass which caused a 5km tailback of traffic. Our
delayed start proved to be significant as our four groups teed off behind 7
Korean tourists, who held up the whole course for the remainder of the day.
The front nine was played in a strong wind, and our
resident bookmaker predicted that 34 points would be a good score on the
day. How wrong he was though, as four players scored 36 points or more, and
Barry “the prophet” scored 34 points himself to finish in 7th
place!
There’s no stopping Geoff Williams at the moment as he
scored 39 points yet again, even off his newly reduced handicap. Gerry
Cooney made a welcome return to the podium in second place, narrowly beating
Lee Butler on the count back.
Even the near pins were tightly contested today, with
Colin Greig putting his tee shot within 4 feet of the hole on the 15th
green, only to find he was one inch outside Peter Habgood, playing in the
group in front - and watching closely from the 16th
tee!
A special mention for our popular senior citizen Reg
Smart, who was making a comeback after recent health problems, and had 21
points on the front nine before overstretching himself on a bunker shot and
being forced to retire – get well again soon Reg.
1st Geoff Williams (14) 39pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (17) 38pts
3rd Lee Butler (13) 38pts
Near Pins: Lee Butler, John Graham, Gerry Cooney,
and Peter Habgood.
Friday, August 10,
Greenwood C & B – Stableford
The weather didn’t look very promising as we assembled on
the 1st tee during a light shower of rain. However
after a 5 minute delay, the rain stopped and the round was completed in near
perfect conditions without any further showers until we were heading back
down the 331.
Greenwood is not at its best at the moment and today the
greens were slow and bumpy, particularly on the B nine. The course plays
long from the white tees, and with a healthy breeze throughout the round it
was a day for straight hitters.
Gerry Cooney continued his return to form, to easily take
the honours ahead of Lee Butler, and Geoff Williams’s winning streak (6 wins
and a second place from his last 7 games!) was finally broken as he came in
with 33 points to finish 4th.
1st Gerry Cooney (17) 40pts
2nd Lee Butler (13) 37pts
3rd John Graham (10) 34pts
Near pins: Lee Butler and Geoff Williams.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society
who currently play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, call Dave on 087 1469978 or
email [email protected]. We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for
breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are
always welcome.
The Bunker Boys are now searching for a new home, after being informed
that the Bowling Green will close in two months time. If you have any
suggestions regarding a suitable bar in Central Pattaya, that would welcome
a group of dedicated golfers (and drinkers) year round, we’d be happy to
hear from you.

Berger blitz at Green Valley
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
![](pic/s26-Jomtien.jpg)
Roar Berger and Mike Chatt.
One of our fun games of the month, a pairs multiplier
with an individual stableford competition for three divisions as there were
36 out today.
The pairs comp required one player from division 1 and
one from division 2 while the normal stableford divisions were split at
5-12, 13-19 and 20+.
A totally deserted course greeted us on arrival and the
first group teed off 30 minutes ahead of schedule. After nine holes some
amazing scores were being reported; 19 points on the front nine for the
leader in division 1 and 2 and 23 in division 3, and this was playing off
normal placings on the white tees.
Perfect weather conditions today and the course was in
good condition with quite fast greens and with an amazing 25 points on the
back nine, playing off 29, Roar Berger won division 3 with 48 points, yes
48. He has never ever played to this before, so well done Roar! Sid Ottaway
was 10 points behind Roar in second place and Joe Kubon took third on 35.
Grant Cadell won the second division with 42 points,
beating Bryan Rought by one point, and Harry Vincenzi was third with 39.
Jeff Codeiro, playing off 10, topped the first division
with 39 points ahead of the Swansea boy Dave Richards in second on 36, and
Mikael Andersson took third one point behind David.
Near pins went to Mikael Andersson, Mike Chatt, Ken
Leadstone, Harry Vincenzi, Roar Berger and Bryan Rought.
Other technical prizes were won as follows: Nearest the
pin in 2 shots 3rd hole – (Div 1) Mark Williamson, (Div 2) Burnie Sinclair;
Nearest the pin in three shots 8th hole – (Div 1) Mike Missler, (Div 2) Joe
Kubon; Nearest the pin in 2 shots 13th hole – (Div 1) Grant Cadell, (Div 2)
Alan Bissell; Longest Drive 15th hole – (Div 1) Chris Voller, (Div 2) Gordon
Everingham.
Jeff Codeiro and Harry Vincenzi shared the ‘2’s pot in
division 1 and William Chang and Sid Ottaway were smiling all the way to the
bank after sharing the rollover pot in division 2.
The overall winners in the pairs multiplier were Roar
Berger and Mike Chatt with 83points, while in second place came Bryan Rought
and Burnie Sinclair after beating Alan Bissell and Dave Richards on a 37/32
count back, both pairs with 66 points.
Wednesday, August 8,
Phoenix - Stableford
We were back on the Mountain and Lakes again today with
29 players in eight groups out on a cloudy, overcast day.
After Monday’s extraordinary scores another one came in
today and for the first time ever with this score, David Phillips won
division 2 with 41 points. Rod Howett took second place in the division with
35 points and in third place was ‘Countback’ Burnie on 33.
Al Griffiths topped division 1 with 37 points and Harry
Vincenzi beat Lee Casey on a 19/17 back nine count back for second as both
came in with 36 points.
The cut in the divisions today was 7-20 and 21+ and Grant
Cadell birdied Mountain 8 to win division 1 ‘2’s pot while there were no
claimants in the second tier.
Near pin prizes went to Lindsay Phillips, Dave Richards,
Chris Voller, Jean Morel and ‘Countback’ Burnie.
Friday, August 10, Eastern
Star – Stableford
We decided to have a 36 hole tournament today and the
following Monday as well as the individual stableford competition.
It was looking very dark and dismal as we arrived but
there was a cool breeze luckily no rain throughout the round.
The best score today came in division 1 from Mike
Missler, playing off 12, who won with 38 points. John Batti took second in
the division after beating Chris Voller on a 17/16 back nine count back
after they both scored 36 points each.
Joe Kubon won division 2 with 35 points, while Chris Reed
beat Rod Howett on a 15/13 count back after a meager 29 point return from
each of them
Near pins were claimed by Mike Missler (2), Chris Voller,
Rod Howett and Chris Reed.
Tony Kay birdied the 6th in division 1 to scoop the ‘2’s pot while there
were more rollovers in division 2.

A mad week for Max Scott
PSC golf from The Golf Club
![](pic/s28-Golf%20Club.jpg)
Mark Wood, Peter LeNoury, Max Scott and Phil
Smedley.
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 6, Green
Valley (White tees) - Stableford
1st Henry O’Brien (21) 39pts
2nd Terry Wagner (21) 38pts
3rd Tony Duthie (22) 38pts
4th Jerry Garcia (20) 35pts
It was another fantastic week of Olympic sports this
week, and some monumental performances from both the U.S. and G.B. teams
from beautiful London. We now look forward to Rio in 4 years time and golf
added to the Olympics for the first time ever.
It was the revenge of the high handicappers this Monday
as not only were all the podium positions dotted with double digits, but
they were in the 20’s! These guys played well today so let’s not take
anything away from this great victory. They also got their money’s worth
with all those strokes taken!
Henry ‘O’ took top spot with a great 39. How he manages
to play so well has us all baffled. Being a Scotsman, it must be in his
blood, because he usually steps up to the first tee after a night of being
‘overserved’ at the bar. Well played Henry, Glasgow would be proud of ya.
Wednesday, August 8,
Bangpra (White Tees) – Stableford
1st Max Scott (5) 43pts
2nd Mark Wood (9) 37pts
3rd Peter LeNoury (9) 35pts
4th Phil Smedley (12) 34pts
Bangpra is one of our favourite courses and there are no
moans and groans when we put it up on the monthly schedule. The course has
been in great shape lately and the monkeys have been behaving as well. Have
you seen that 7-foot long monitor lizard that lives in the pond on the 17th
par 3, it’s amazing! All comments on the course after the round were very
complimentary; it is a lovely day out.
To shoot a 43 off a 5 handicap is not easy. Max Scott had
a great day of golf today and his 43 put him top of the leaderboard.
Regulars Mark Wood and Peter LeNoury had decent rounds of 37 and 35 for 2nd
and 3rd spots with our Ozzie mate Phil Smedley taking 4th on 34 points.
Friday, August 10, Phoenix
(White Tees) - Stableford
1st Serge Straeten (19) 37pts
2nd Nigel Bennett (11) 36pts
3rd Max Scott (5) 35pts
4th Kevin Woods (18)34pts
Another one of the best courses in Pattaya that we play
on a regular basis is Phoenix. The course was in real good shape so no
complaints from the gang that played the Lakes and Mountain 9’s today. The
Phoenix track is a Dennis Griffith design, who also designed Soi Dao
Highlands which is another fave of ours.
Serge Straeten, our Parisian buddy who likes to hit the
high seas when not playing golf, sailed away with victory today with 37
Stableford points. Nigel Bennett was just behind on 36 and Wednesday’s
winner from Bangpra, Mr. Mad Max Scott, took third spot today. Kevin Woods
(absolutely no relation to Tiger, trust me) ended up a shot behind Max with
34 points.
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out.

Beach volleyball stars in Pattaya as well as Olympics

Pattaya Mayor Ittipol
Kunplome presents the champion’s trophy to the Kalasin 1 team, winners of
the female Open category.
Phasakorn Channgam
While their Olympic counterparts were busy ‘strutting
their stuff’ at Horseguards Parade outside Buckingham Palace in London,
Pattaya’s own beach volleyball players were taking part in a separate
competition at the slightly less illustrious but equally competitive Pattaya
Open Beach Volleyball Tournament 2012.
The event was held at Jomtien Beach from July 27 – August
5 with the more than 50 local and national teams being separated into
several categories dependant on age and gender.

Pattaya Volleyball U14 team
accept the winning trophy from city councilor Banjong Banthunprayuk.
When the dust had settled and the results were finally
in, it was found that the Pattaya Volleyball Club had taken out the male
(U14) title after their youngsters defeated the Pattaya No. 7 School by 2
sets to 0, and the beaten finalists would then go on to watch their female
(U14) team also fall just short after losing their final 2-0 to the
Plutaluang Wittaya team.
There was better news for the Pattaya No. 7 School in the
U16 category where the male team won the final 2-1 against Wongkasem Panich,
while the girls’ title went to Pattaya No. 11 School, conquerors of
Plutaluang Wittaya in straight sets.
In the Open categories, the Navy 33 team battled for a
hard fought 2-1 win over Dongtan Club in the men’s final while Kalasin 1
overcame local favourites Pattaya City by a similar score to secure the
women’s title.
Pattaya Mayor Ittipol Kunplome was in attendance on
finals day to enjoy the action with the other spectators and to present the
trophies, certificates and cash prizes at the conclusion of play.

‘Just Burgers’ and ‘Sunrise Tacos’ share the spoils
PSC Sunday Softball
![](pic/s30-Softball-1.jpg)
George King rock solid at
first base.
Sunday August 12th saw 19 players
come out to the best softball field in Asia at the Thai Polo Club for the
weekly Pattaya Sports Club Softball games. This week’s game featured a much
needed component that had been missing from our game for a long time, an
umpire! A very big thank you goes out to Brian “T Rex” Gavagan who
volunteered to umpire for the next few months while he sits out with an
injury. He did an outstanding job in his debut appearance behind the plate.
Our two super seniors were the stars of the day, George
King of the Sunrise Tacos team played rock solid first base and hit a ball
over the outfielder’s head. George “Chicka” Smith a super senior on the Just
Burgers team batted supremely well in his first softball game in his life.
Players and fans were treated to a Chicka’s signature celebratory moonwalk
dance each time he reached base safely, which I must say was a sight to
behold. The chance of being able to see that again will be enough to bring
me back next week.

Jensen Chun delivers a pitch.
These two guys are both working on their 8th
decade but approach the game with more enthusiasm and smiles than any other
player on the field. I must add they were both using the same cool amber
beverage to lubricate their joints.
Sunrise Tacos prevailed over Just Burgers in the first
game 12-8. The commissioner called in and requested a livelier ball in the
second game, which allowed some bigger hits and more runs. Home runs by
Tyler Best and first time player Alex T. allowed Just Burgers to eke out a
16-13 win over Sunrise Tacos.
No sooner did the game end than the weather turned wet,
many of the guys used this as an excuse to stop on the way home to wait out
the rain, quench their thirst and make friends with the locals.
PSC Softball is always looking for new players regardless
of skill level, experience or time away from the game. We have players of
all ages and many countries, who enjoy an afternoon of fun and exercise with
a bunch of great guys. We have some spare gloves and everything else you
need, so come on out and check us out at the best softball field in Asia.
We play every Sunday at 12 noon to about 4 p.m. at the Thai Polo Club.
For more information check out the softball page at the PSC website www.

Brave United lose 5-goal thriller to league leaders
![](pic/s31-Pattaya%20United.jpg)
Pattaya United’s Keisuke
Ogawa, right, attacks the Muang Thong defence during their Thai Premier
League fixture at the Yamaha Stadium in Bangkok, Sunday, August 12.
(Photo/Pattaya United)
Four days after recording a well deserved 1-0 home
victory over defending champions Buriram United, the ‘Dolphins’ of Pattaya
United travelled to Bangkok on Sunday, August 12 to take on the league
leaders and champions elect, Muang Thong United at a packed and noisyYamaha
Stadium.
Buoyed by the victory in midweek, Pattaya caught their
hosts off guard by immediately going on the offensive and their enterprising
play brought its reward with an opening goal from Slovak defender Mariแn
Juhแs who headed in a right-wing cross from Anuwat Inyin in the fourth
minute of the game to silence the home supporters.
The game opened up into an entertaining encounter with
chances at both ends and it took the unbeaten ‘Kirins’ just eleven minutes
to get back on equal terms when Narit came off his line too far for a cross
and was beaten to the ball by Paulo Rangel, who headed the ball over the
Pattaya keeper and into the empty net.
There were further chances for both teams in an action
filled first half but the scores remained level at the interval.
After the break, any thoughts the home team may have
entertained of dominating their opponents were put firmly on the back-burner
at Pattaya snatched the lead once more; this time with a rather fortuitous
goal from Inyin. The Pattaya midfielder latched onto a quick throw-in to
strike the ball from the edge of the penalty area which then took a wicked
deflection off ‘Kirins’ centre-half Panupong Wongsa and looped past his own
keeper and into the net.
Pattaya were then subject to some misfortune of their own
as they were temporarily reduced to 10 men when Dyachenko had to go off to
receive treatment for an injury and the home team took advantage of their
numerical superiority to equalize once more through a snap volley from their
Macedonian midfielder Mario Djurovski.
With the clock ticking down to full time, Pattaya hearts
were finally broken when Muang Thong’s Phichitphong Chieuchiu fired in a
superb winner following a corner kick that gave Narit in the Pattaya goal no
chance. The ‘Dolphins’ attempted to rally once more but their last ditch
efforts were fired wide of the Muang Thong goal.
It was a cruel result for Pattaya who had put up a strong
performance and tested the league leaders to the limit. The loss however
sees the Dolphins still languishing at the wrong end of the table in 12th
position, just three points above the relegation zone. United’s next fixture
is the ‘big one’ – a local derby against second placed Chonburi ‘Sharks’
this Saturday, August 18 at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya. Kick-off is
scheduled for 6 p.m.

Wood claims maiden win at Thailand Open

Thailand Open trophy after securing victory with a final round 67 at the
Suwan Golf & Country Club, Sunday, August 12. (Photo courtesy OneAsia.asia)
England’s Chris Wood secured the first win of his
professional career last Sunday with a two-shot victory in a
rain-interrupted U.S. $1 million Thailand Open, breaking the hearts of home
fans seeking a first Thai champion in eight years.
The 24-year-old European Tour regular — competing in a
OneAsia Tour event for the first time — fired rounds of 67, 64, 67 and 67
for a 23-under par total of 265, although preferred lies were allowed
because of soggy conditions at the 6,471 metre (7,077 yard) Suwan Golf &
Country Club on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Hard-charging Thais Arnond Vongvanij (65) and Wisut
Artjanawat (67) battled to catch the strapping 1.96-metre (6 ft 5 inch)
Wood, but had to settle for a share of third place with Korean Lee Dong-hwan
(67).
Alone in second was Jang Dong-kyu, also of Korea, who
completed the first nine holes in just 29 shots en-route to a closing 63 and
the best result of his career.
“It is brilliant – I am really, really pleased,” Wood
said, after what appeared to be a victory march from the 17th was
interrupted by a rain delay of over an hour.
“It is hard winning. I always felt that once I got one
win it would give me the confidence to go on and win more, so hopefully I
can take this confidence back to the remainder of the tournaments I have got
for the season.”
Thailand has not produced a home winner of the National
Open since Boonchu Ruangkit won his second in 2004.

Ratchanok ‘May’ Inthanon,
right, helps coach youngsters at the CAT Sports Club in Pattaya, Saturday,
August 11.
Teerarak Suthathiwong
Thailand’s Olympic badminton star Ratchanok ‘May’
Inthanon dropped in at the CAT Sports Club on 3rd Road
in Pattaya last weekend whilst on vacation at the seaside resort city with a
group of family and friends.
The 17-year old Thai starlet is the most successful
junior badminton player in history after winning the world junior title in
three consecutive years from 2009-11, and was also a member of the
successful Thailand national team at last year’s SEA Games.
In London, Ratchanok lost out at the quarter-final stage
of the singles competition in a closely fought contest to world number the 2
player Wang Xin from China, who used her greater experience to come from a
set down to beat the Thai youngster 2-1. Still, time is on the side of
Ratchanok in her quest and desire to one day win an Olympic gold medal for
the Kingdom.
