200 Bowlers: Tue, Lek & Yeow.
First place Brother D was led by Tue
Pettae to a three point win over Mitt in 2012. Tue bowled a 202 game and 576
series. Yeow Gale, Mitt in 2012, bowled the best series of the day with
games of 202, 222 and 169 for a 593 series.
Caf้ Kronborg split their match with Bavaria with each
team winning two points. Kran Nielsen bowled a 555 series for Kronborg.
VFW Post 9876 moved from fifth to fourth place after
winning three points from Green Tree. Green tree dropped to fifth place. Ooy
Pluemkamon led VFW with a 520 series.
Indiana took three points from Canada with La Montgomery
leading the way with a 502 series and Somrit adding a 501 for Indiana. Lek
Reaper did all she could to help Canada with a 203 game and 200 game, 541
series, but she didn’t get much help from her other team mates.
Pelly makes the ‘white’ choice at Burapha
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, August 13, Burapha
– Stableford
Twenty-nine players at Burapha today on the A and B nines
and for a change we didn’t have the course to ourselves as it was a holiday
(day in lieu of the Queen’s Birthday) and many were certainly taking
advantage of the day off. It was a little slow and unfortunately we had two
three-balls at the front who caught the rest of the field at the turn and
had a slow back nine but still just over four hours, so not too bad for a
busy day.
A and B usually means playing from the blue tees but as
an experiment, players were allowed to pick their own tee for the day and
surprisingly only seven chose the white tees, which just goes to show that
most players like to test themselves against the course. The course was in
good condition and the greens were great to putt on.
We ended up with three divisions, one for the white tee
players and two for the blue tee players plus the ‘2’s.
Dennis Pelly made a canny choice of the white tees and
won at canter with 42pts from playing partners Jarod and Dave, both of whom
scored 33pts.
With the remainder of the field electing for the blue
tee, the best score came from Kev Waycott with 38pts from three tied on 32;
namely Russell Hall, Andy Butts and Barnsey. In Div B, the win went to Bobby
Driggs on 36 from John Player (35) and Steve Milne on 34.
There were no ‘2’s from the white and two ‘2’s from the
blues from Kev Waycott & Rosco.
White Tee
1st Dennis Pelly (11) 42pts
2nd Jarod Braithwaite (20) 33pts
3rd Dave Dobson (8) 33pts
Blue Tee Div A (0-12)
1st Kev Waycott (11) 38pts
2nd Russell Hall (10) 32pts
3rd Andy Butterworth (12) 32pts
Blue Tee Div B (13+)
1st Bobby Driggs (14) 36pts
2nd John Player (20) 35pts
3rd Steve Milne (15) 34pts
Monday, August 13, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
For some reason, Khao Kheow still remains out of favour
with many golfers, as only six took on the challenge of the A & B nines. The
weather was perfect, sunny with a gentle breeze, and the starter was good to
us as he sent us off early, ahead of a five-ball that were due to go out in
front.
The scoring wasn’t great but generally it never is here
but Sugar won the day with 32pts from the tosser, John, with 31, and Bob St.
Aubin got the only ‘2’.
1st Sugar Ray Handford (16) 32pts
2nd John Lawton (21) 31pts
3rd Paul Cohen (10) 29pts
Tuesday, August 14,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
A couple of three-balls and a four-ball enjoyed the
delights of Pattaya Country Club, which must be said was in good condition
and the greens were the best they’ve been for some time - very flat and
smooth and looking excellent.
The scoring was fairly ordinary, apart from ‘Nifty Nev’,
who scored an excellent 37 to win by four from the ‘Turnip’.
It’s the back nine, well not really the back nine, but
the second time round playing from the back tees, that ruins most player’s
cards, as some of the holes; particularly the first and second are quite a
bit longer and the two par threes are right up there as well, necessitating
a wood from the tee for many.
There were no ‘2’s today.
1st Nev Steward (22) 37pts
2nd Dennis Persson (17) 33pts
3rd Terry Hamilton (20) 31pts
Tuesday, August 14, Laem
Chabang – Stableford
14 players turned up for Laem Chabang to play the A
(Mountain) and B (Lake) courses with a late tee off of 11.15. The day was
bright and sunny but surprisingly not hot and humid and just made for a
great day of golf. The course was in superb condition and the greens were
very hard and fast. Plenty of rain in Pattaya but Laem Chabang had dry
fairways and dry, fluffy bunkers.
The pace off play was a little slow but most players
finished in under four and a half hours. The course was the winner as the
best score for the day was only 34 points and John O’Keefe won in a
three-way count back from Captain Stephen and John Player.
Finally, out of 14 players that started, disappointingly
only eight cards were returned.
John O’Keefe was also the only player to get a ‘2’ for
the day and that was on A7.
1st John O’Keefe (16) 34pts
2nd Stephen Mann (9) 34pts
3rd John Player (20) 34pts
Wednesday, August 15, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
19 players at Siam Plantation to play the Sugar Cane and
Tapioca courses on another bright and sunny day with a lovely breeze to keep
everybody cool. We teed-off on time but the course was heavily booked and
the pace of play was a little slow, especially for the three-ball that went
off first.
As always, the course was in great condition but you can
see they have had plenty of rain and the fairways were a little wet, which
meant that there was not too much run. The greens were again good and I
think the scores are starting to reflect how much the players enjoy playing
this great course as all the place-getters shot par or better for the day.
One division plus the ‘2’s and the winner for the day
with a great back nine of 24 points was Billy Gray with 38 points who beat
Jim Bryan on a count back. Chris Davisson had 37 points for third place and
Mark McDonald and Bernie Stafford had 36 points each to fill the other
places.
Mark McDonald picked up the only ‘2’ for the day on Sugar
Cane No.3.
1st Billy Gray (27) 38pts
2nd Jim Bryan (16) 38pts
3rd Chris Davisson (11) 37pts
4th Mark McDonald (3) 36pts
5th Bernie Stafford (13) 36pts
Friday, August 17, Green
Valley – Stableford
Thirty-two players for Green Valley on a great Thailand
sunny day with a light breeze just to keep all a little cool. The starter
got us off on time and thankfully all in four-balls so pace of play was
consistent for all the Outbackers but there were other groups in front that
slowed everything down towards the end of the round.
Green Valley has again sliced and sanded the greens and
they must do this more than any other club we play at, in saying that the
greens were reasonable to putt on and stayed on line even if a little slow.
Scores were good, especially in Division 1, where a
number of players shot 35 or 36 but were out of the placings. Paul Greenaway
(9) showed the way with an excellent 40 points from Mark McDonald with an
equally excellent 38 points off his 3 handicap (73 gross).
Division 2 was won by Dennis Pelly with a fine round of
39 points but the round of the day was from Division 3 winner, Barry
McIntosh with 41 points. Barry certainly appreciated the warmth of Thailand
after the bitter cold of Australia.
There was only one ‘2’ from Paul Bourke on the 9th hole.
Note: Friday August 24 will be the monthly medal, as
the following week many players are away in Hua Hin.
Div A (0–9)
1st Paul Greenaway (9) 40pts
2nd Mark McDonald (3) 38pts
3rd Stephen Mann (9) 37pts
Div B (10-16)
1st Dennis Pelly (10) 39pts
2nd Rosco Langoulant (13) 34pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 32pts
Div C (17+)
1st Barry McIntosh (21) 41pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (19) 35pts
3rd Terry Phur (18) 33pts

Beautiful Bangpra
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pic/s9-Bertgolf.jpg)
Tuesday’s winners and
runners-up with Pu, the boss.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, August 14,
Bangpra – Stableford
The start to the month these days has been really great,
especially on a Tuesday. Last week it was Khao Kheow and this week Bangpra,
two great courses. Bangpra is the ‘Original’, meaning it was the first
course on the Eastern Seaboard. This used to be a good long drive from
Pattaya, but with the vast improvement in the roads it is now just a
‘bimble’ down there, especially when you go with Mashi.
On this day, as is usual, we had a full house and early
there it was a quick book-in and early to the first tee. Luckily as the tee
was empty, for the first time here for ages, we were able to get away early.
We were also able to see how difficult the day would be as the wind was
really strong. One of the things here is that with the course being so
mature, the wind swirls around and you seem to be always playing against it.
The course was a pleasure to play but the fairways were a
bit bare, I do like a little grass to tee up the ball, but the greens were
fast and true and whilst not at their absolute fastest, they were more than
most could handle.
As we progressed we realised that our four-ball was
getting our money’s worth with the number of shots we played. Indeed our
thoughts were that if the rest played so bad we would be in for one of our
lowest scoring days as a group. Surely the rest would play better?
Back at Bert’s it was soon into the presentation, and
with the rain bouncing outside we were surprised to see Walter come through
the door in his normal subdued clothing, with umbrella.
In the A Flight, 0 to 20, the winner was Walter Baechli
with 33 points ahead of Dick Warberg in second with 30 points and Mike
Gaussa third with 29 points. In the B Flight the winner was Barry Elphick
with 36 points, best score of the day, in second was Neil Shaw with 31
points and in third was Frank Pilkington with 30 points.
Long Putt prizes went to Mick Goghlan, Neil Shaw and
Brian Parish.
As it still was pouring down we stopped for a bit and had
a cold one or two. T.T.F.N.

Skilton blitzes Khao Kheow
PSC golf from The Growling Swan
Peter Blackburn
Tuesday, August 14, Khao Kheow B & C – Stableford
Due to a late withdrawal we were down to a field of
thirteen and we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for the trip to
one of our favourite courses, Khao Kheow. Departing in 2 minivans slightly
ahead of schedule at 8.26 a.m. we arrived at the course just 40 minutes
later and found the course to be fairly quiet although there were a couple
of other groups that we had to wait for before we could send our first group
away.
![](pic/s11-Growling-1.jpg)
Max Bracegirdle & Neil
Skilton.
It was 15 minutes ahead of our booked tee time of 10.00
a.m. when our first group teed-off in great weather, not too hot with at
times a fairly stiff breeze and as usual the course was in terrific shape
with the greens as fast & true as ever.
We proceeded at a leisurely pace, never held up by the
groups in front and as it did get a bit hotter we had a 7 minute break
before tackling the picturesque B8 Alcatraz par three. Remarkably, for the
first time any of our group could recall all four of us finished on the
green with our tee shots which resulted in two of us recording birdies. We
did take another quick break on the C nine and were able to complete our
round in four hours & twenty five minutes. It was another very enjoyable
round of golf with great company and terrific weather on a top class course.
With the smallish field we had just the one grade with
four spots on the podium. In addition there were rewards for nearest the
pins on the four par 3’s, as usual one of them kindly sponsored by Mike
Gosden and longest first putts on B9 & C9, kindly sponsored by Martin Todd..
Neil Skilton was remarking earlier that this was his very
favourite golf course in the region, primarily because of the course design
and sure enough it was certainly to his liking on this day. His 42 points
was a splendid effort, shooting 74 off the stick which enabled him to win
the day, 6 points clear of Jim McFarlyn in second place. That man again
Geoff Williams finished third with 34 points and the improving Bernie McCart
completed the podium with 33 points.
1st Neil Skilton (8) 42pts
2nd Jim McFarlyn (28) 36pts
3rd Geoff Williams (12) 34pts
4th Bernie McCart (30) 33pts
Near Pins: B3 – Neil Skilton; B8 – Peter Blackburn;
C3 – Geoff Williams; C8 – Geoff Williams
Long Putts: B9 – Sandy Leiper; C9 – Sandy Leiper
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was Max Bracegirdle, making it two in a row and
he once more accepted the “honour” in good spirit. Hunter paraded Deefa the
Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our very generous
Growling Swan crew.
It would be remiss of me not to mention one of the fines
for the day which involved one of our golfers absent mindedly taking his
golf cap into the showers with him instead of his towel! Not mentioning any
names but his initials are Mike Gosden.

Graham Buckingham, Graham Rice
& Stu Rifkin.
Thursday, August 16, Burapha, A & B – Stableford
Our recent monthly visits to the classy Burapha Golf
Course have been proving very popular and today was no exception as we had
20 golfers keen to participate. Unfortunately one of our regulars got his
dates mixed up and having recently acquired a car he naturally drove himself
to the course, but upon arrival at Eastern Star he discovered that
he was just one day out (PSC Member’s Tournament the next day) which
left us with one short.
Whilst assembling at The Growling Swan prior to departure
we welcomed Scott Lobenwein, Graham Rice & Alan (Colonel) Sanders from Nth.
Queensland, Australia, John Pierrel from the USA and Walter’s mate Phil Hail
from Switzerland. We bade a fond farewell to Geoff Williams returning to the
UK and also Jim McFarlyn who is due to fly back to Australia on Sunday
although he is having so much fun he says he may delay his departure – for
the second time! It was also appropriate to wish Walter Baechli good luck as
he is off to the UK very shortly for yet another cycling tour.
We left the G.S. a couple of minutes early in 2 minivans
at 8.27 am and in the blink of an eye arrived at the course right on 9.00
am. Our scheduled tee time was 10.00 am so there was plenty of time for
putting practice and then a quick word with the Starter enabled our first
group to tee off 24 minutes early.
The weather was once more great and apologies for being
repetitious but this lovely golf course was as ever in fabulous condition
with lush fairways and perfect although mostly very fast greens. Our group
proceeded at a cracking pace and after completing the A nine in just on 2
hours we continued in the same vein on B nine & our full round was completed
in exactly four hours.
Having a good field enabled us to have 2 grades with four
podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 17 and B Grade for 18
and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes, individually
sponsored by Scott Lobenwein, Jim McFarlyn, Stephen Newton & Geoff Williams.
Also longest first putts on A9 & B9 sponsored by Sandy Leiper. Many thanks
for the generosity of these guys.
There were count backs galore in deciding the winners on
the day and in A Grade it was Stu “Heineken” Rifkin (18 point back nine) who
emerged victorious with 35 points, winning the count back from John Pierrel
(15 point back nine) in second spot. With 2 golfers on 34 points it was Phil
Hail (19 point back nine) who took third place from Neil Skilton (15 point
back nine) in fourth spot.
In the B Grade another count back was necessary with 2
guys on 38 points; Graham Buckingham (20 point back nine) finishing first
from Tom “T.C.” Cotton (18 point back nine) in second spot. Completing the
count back scenario, Scott Lobenwein (19 point back nine) finished third
with Jim McFarlyn (14 point back nine) fourth, both having 32 points.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Stu Rifkin (16) 35pts
2nd John Pierrel (14) 35pts
3rd Phil Hail (17) 34pts
4th Neil Skilton (7) 34pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 38pts
2nd Tom Cotton (21) 38pts
3rd Scott lobenwein (31) 32pts
4th Jim McFarlyn (28) 32pts
Near Pins: A3 – Jim McFarlyn; A6 – Neil Skilton; B3 –
Martin Todd; B8 – John Pierrel
Long Putts: A9 – John Pierrel; B9 – Graham Buckingham
The winner of the Compass Cap was Graham Rice who
insisted on wearing the Cap for several hours afterwards. Hunter paraded
Deefa the Dog who of course collected many donations to charity from our
very generous Growling Swan crew. We then of course retired to The Growling
Swan for many beers & lots of laughs.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low &
high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play
Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar)
in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For
bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351 386 or email

Hewitt takes it on count-back
Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society
![](pic/s12-Phoenix%20golf.jpg)
Tuesday winners with the staff
at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
What a wonderful time of the year! During the day the sun
shines, cool wind blows in from the sea, and by about 5.00pm the clouds
gather and the rain falls for another hour to cool the evening. If this
ain’t paradise then I’m a transvestite.
On August 14, with a few players returning from their
respective summers in the northern hemisphere, we experienced a larger group
than of late, which could mean a busy high season as we still have many to
return.
KPK Food Services provided us with their monthly voucher
today and it was in-form Billy Hewitt who claimed the sponsored voucher for
the second week running. He just pipped Richard Baldwin into second place by
count back, with both players recording 37 points.
Near pins went to Mike Gerrard, Richard Baldwin and
newcomer Mark Jennings.
As usual our hosts (owner Ung with her staff in photo)
provided us with the lucky draw prizes which went to Peter Harris, Joris
Goetschalkx (again) and Bob Neylon.
We play at our beloved Phoenix course three times a week,
every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, all at 11.30 am. If anyone would like to
join please give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565 for more information.
Non-Phoenix members can enjoy preferential green fees as guests of the
members.

Bob wins the Medal
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, August 12, Green
Valley - Monthly Medal
A Flight
1st Bob Newell (6) net 67
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) net 70
B Flight
1st John O’Keefe (16) net 73
2nd Barry Copstake (18) net 74
Red Flight
1st Mike Craighead net 77
Near Pins: No 4 Bob Newell; No 9 Paul Bray; 12
Peter Henshaw; No 16 Ed Wyckoff
‘Broad more’ Bob Newell, whom this column has cited as a
nice guy several times previously, won A Flight at Green Valley, but more
importantly he took home a lead crystal engraved whisky glass and a bottle
of Jameson Irish whisky, emblematic of the monthly medal (another for team
GB) which in this case was for the month of August. To do so Bob had to
shoot a dazzling net 67 which was three clear of Joe ‘I’m in the’ Mooneyham,
who is always a welcome addition to the society.
![](pic/s13-Lewiinski.jpg)
Monthy Medal winner Bob
Newell.
In B Flight John O’Keefe stroked his way to an impressive
net 73 that put him one clear of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake.
The Red Flight was won for the umpteenth time by Mike
‘the Mechanic’ Craighead who picked up a lead crystal champagne flute and
another non-transferable invite to join Bob in the year-end Gold Medal.
Paul Bray sunk the only 2 of the day.
Monday, August 13, Khao
Kheow A&B - Stableford
1st Rod Brown (18) 38pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (7) 33pts
When Rod was advised that his winnings account was
depleted he did the only rational thing, he went out and won, thereby
replenishing it. In doing so Rod saved the day from being a non-counting
round as he cleared the field by five clear points, which just left Aussie
Salvatore ‘you know who’ to tidy up the flight.
No one claimed a 2 so it’s was a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, August 15,
Burapha A&B - Stableford
A Flight
1st Pierre Bietry (14) 37pts
2nd John Baxter (15) 37pts
B Flight
1st Barry Copestake (18) 40pts
2nd Jim Elphick (23) 36pts
Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry used to visit Lewiinski’s
from his native Little Hole Bar just when he was short of cash, but lately
he has found the feeding so good he has found it difficult to leave. It
didn’t come easy though as count back was required to edge the red hot John
Baxter for the top rung in the premier flight.
But it was B Flight that provided the man of the match
when Barry ‘the boot’ Copstake cruised round the course with a splendid 40
point haul. Considering Barry has recently had surgery to replace a dodgy
ankle, coupled with his double knee and hip replacement, this is a
remarkable feat.
Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick just quietly keeps sliding onto
the podium when no one is looking as he took the second spot today.
Jimmy Day, Mike Jeffreys and Kevin Krazy shared the
rollover 2’s pot
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.
Transport is provided.

Wedge play the key for Herbie
PSC golf from The Blue Moose Sports Bar
![](pic/s14-Blue01.jpg)
Herbie Ishinaga, left, with
Richard Hall.
Monday, August 13, Pattaya
C.C. - Stableford
Two foursomes showed up for Monday golf at Pattaya
Country Club. The weather was good and the course was busier than normal,
with Monday being a holiday for the Queen’s birthday. The club did provide a
starter so the golfers playing the 2nd nine could work
into the groups just starting out. Time of play was normal.
Herbie recovered from the initial tee shot going into the
creek as he chipped in his 6th shot for 2 points. His
wedge continued to help him to 42 points to win the day.
Richard, playing with the Herbie group, came in second
with 38 points. Herbie did not make any new statements about dominating
Monday golf.
Our lady golfers Oiy and Jan struggled after Gay’s party
Saturday night and then an early round of Mother’s Day golf at Pattaya
Country Club.
![](pic/s14-Blue02.jpg)
Joe St. Laurent, left, with
Dale Murphy, right.
Wednesday, August 15,
Burapha - Stableford
We had an abnormally low turnout at Burapha on Wednesday,
which was a shame considering the condition of the course. One of our
regular golfers decided not to play after scoring 2 points on the back nine
at Emerald – name withheld to protect his reputation, and no, his new driver
is not up for sale!
The course was pretty open and everyone was back in less
the 3 and a half hours. Dale had a great front nine and an okay back nine to
win with 38 points. He had 8 pars, 1 birdie with 2 nasty doubles (wipes on
the back nine) scoring 22 on the front side and 16 on the back. Joe came in
a distant second with 32 points. Dale also took the closest to the pin.

Marathon man takes on Khao Kheow
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
This past week started off with another Thai holiday
celebrating the Queen’s birthday which meant the traffic increased
tenfold over that weekend and Pattaya was buzzing with many Thais coming
from far afield into town and heading for the beach.
![](pic/s15-TR%20golf.jpg)
Brad Dippie - winner at
Crystal Bay.
Perhaps in anticipation of finding crowded golf
courses on Monday 13th August, the numbers wanting to play golf with the
TRGG dropped down to a hardy few, or perhaps it was only those who are
fanatics.
Anyway the greatest fanatic of the lot, some would
say the maddest, stepped forward and took first place at Khao Kheow (A
and B courses). Playing off an eighteen handicap Richard Talbot shot 33
points which was good enough to beat the other five competitors. Joe
Painter (20) took second place with 29 points.
I have spoken about Richard before; besides being an
avidly keen golfer he also runs marathons, lots of marathons, in fact on
Saturday 18th August he got up at some unearthly hour and ran a marathon
and then came along to Crystal Bay later the same morning and played
eighteen holes of golf with the TRGG. To follow that he was planning on
taking in a local football match followed by a night on the town.
Now to my befuddled mind that is the agenda of a
complete and utter madman but I guess it takes all sorts. Anyway well
done Richard, our only bionic golfer at the TRGG!
On Tuesday 14th August things started to return to
normal and a much increased field took on Green Valley. Dave Edwards
(12) took first place with 35 points but he only won on count back from
Michael Maguire (20) who also shot 35 points. David Boran (13) took
third place with 34.
Thursday 16th August saw the TRGG take its weekly
trek to Phoenix (Mountain and Lakes) courses. Rod Crosswell (14) showed
the rest the way home returning with 37 points from Tim Dalton (18) in
second place with 35 points and Seil Revels (4) in third with 34.
You may remember from last week’s report on the
competition at Phoenix that a Matchplay event was taking place at the
same time organised by John Dean. This week that competition entered its
second round which was in fact the semi finals. Unfortunately one of the
contestants Jim Cleaver couldn’t make it because of a bereavement so his
opponent Tim Dalton received a bye into the final.
The other semi-final was between John Dean and Alun
Evans, where John Dean prevailed, I am afraid I don’t know the winning
margin. So John Dean will take on Tim Dalton at Phoenix on the 23rd
August.
On Saturday 18th August it was our regular visit to
Crystal Bay (B and C courses) and a newcomer Brad Dippie (8) took the
honours in a fairly stiff breeze with 39 points. Brad is a young guy who
apparently hits the ball a country mile so I look forward to watching
his improvement in the coming months.
That Australian gentleman ( there are two words you
don’t see together very often in one sentence, only joking all you
Aussies) Roger Wilkinson (14) came second with 37 points. Seil Revels
(4) took third place for the second competition running with 36.

Jaa Memorial Competition commemorates 2 departed friends
A memorial golf competition was held in Khao Kheow Golf
Club for Jaa, caddy No. 65 who died in January of this year at the very
young age of 26. Sadly in January, she had been bitten by a mosquito from
which she contracted dengue fever and died soon afterwards. The competition
was confined to caddies from Khao Kheow with 45 caddies taking part,
including Derm, caddy No 91, who is Jaa’s mother.
![](pic/s17-Caddy-1.jpg)
Jaa - Caddy No. 65.
An excellent day was had by all with the caddies teeing
off at the early hour of 6.30 am. In a lesson to all golfers including
players, playing a medal round, the caddies completed their round in 3 hrs
and 30 mins.
The competition was won by Ou, caddy No 228, while in 2nd
place was Juup, caddy No 224, and 3rd Porn, caddy No
260. Ou went round in a gross score of 80 which at Khao Kheow is a really
excellent round of golf.
The Jaa Memorial Trophy, which is being held in Khao
Kheow, was presented by the family of the late Benny O’Connor. Khao Kheow
was Benny’s favorite course and he was also a good and old friend of Jaa,
who was an excellent golfer as well as being a first class caddy and a
beautiful lady. She was well known for playing golf in all the caddy
competitions in the area.
Unfortunately both Jaa and Benny are both dead but now
with this competition, which will be held every year in Khao Kheow, neither
of them will ever be forgotten.

Benny O’Connor.
Apart from the main prizes there were also Near Pins,
Long Drive and many spot prizes. Near Pins were claimed by Derm, caddy No
91, Sao, caddy No 181, Ou, caddy No 228, and Juup, caddy No 224. The Long
Drive award went to Porn, caddy No 260.
All the participants were very grateful to the sponsors.
There is also a special word of thanks due to Khun Suraphol, the manager of
Khao Kheow, who organized everything and acted as the Emcee for the day and
was generally very supportive.
Following the competition a meal was served in the
clubhouse for all the participants, which for most of them was an extra
special treat being their first time to be able to eat in the clubhouse.
After the meal and presentations a short speech was made
by Alec Hoare thanking everyone who took part and also all the sponsors of
the day - Khao Kheow Golf Club, Laem Chabang Golf Club, Green Valley Golf
Club, the I.P.G.C., Pattaya Sports Club, The Haven, The Links and Sean
Connolly.
Alec then made a presentation of a beautiful framed photo
of Jaa to her mother in memory of the occasion.
Next year it is expected that there will be an even
greater turnout as all the caddies will be trying to get their names on the
beautiful trophy.

Sunrise Tacos edge
PSC Softball triple-header
![](pic/s18-Softball1.jpg)
John “Vertigo” Stockton - Just
Burgers batting champion.
Sunday August 19th saw 23 players
come out to the best softball field in Asia at the Thai Polo Club for the
weekly Pattaya Sports Club Softball games.
Mike Berg made his debut as a starting pitcher for the
Just Burgers team. The team got off to a slow start offensively and they
were down 4 to 9, then in the 4th inning they scored
10 runs thanks to clutch hits by David from Spain, new players Ty and Jiggi,
and Big Ben Reiber who blasted his 2nd home run of the
season over the left field fence.
The Sunrise Tacos team did their best to fight back,
using their main weapon Adam “Plays So Well” Sowell. He single handedly
covers about half the field defensively and when he swings the bat everyone
in the infield crosses their fingers and hopes he doesn’t launch a laser
ball at them. He had a monster home run but it wasn’t enough as Just Burgers
took the first game 18-14.
![](pic/s18-Softball2.jpg)
Greg Kahn powers one down the
left field line.
The 2nd game saw a few late
arrivals get in the game. Justin “Just In Time” Rapp did the special burger
flip belly flop going for a pop fly foul ball behind home plate, much to the
amusement of the many fans. Gil Brown started in left field for Sunrise
Tacos team and made some fine defensive plays. Martin Gansborg played some
outstanding ball behind the plate, catching several balls.
When the dust settled it was Just Burgers taking game 2
from Sunrise Tacos 9-5.
Dennis Willett VP of Pattaya Sports Club came out to
check out the new softball venue and seemed quite impressed with the many
recent improvements of PSC Softball. He was joined in the stands by
literally our largest fan, Lee Reiber, who rarely misses a game.
The 3rd game was very tight and
tied up at 14-14 after 7 innings. We were forced to play extra innings to
determine a winner. Just Burgers batted first and scored 2 runs, thanks to a
solid hit by John “Vertigo” Stockton, who batted flawless all day. Didn’t
make a single out, or a single walk in 12 trips to the plate. When Sunrise
Tacos got their turn Adam Sowell came up with 2 runners on base and blasted
a 3 run walk off home run to win the game for Sunrise Tacos 17-16.
Note: PSC Softball is always looking for new players
regardless of skill level, experience or time away from the game. We have
players of all ages and many countries, who enjoy an afternoon of fun and
exercise with a bunch of great guys. We have some spare gloves and
everything else you need, so come on out and check us out at the best
softball field in Asia.
We play every Sunday at 12 noon to about 4PM at the Thai
Polo Club. For more information check out the softball page at the PSC
website www.pattayasports .org or call or email John Stockton at

A big turnout today saw 36 of the best golfers in Pattaya
head out to Rayong Green Valley with us for our regular Monday competition.
The new hole layout has gone down well with everybody, we have not had a
complaint yet about the big change. I think we all are just so glad to get
rid of that start on the number 1 stroke index par four, and starting on the
par 5 instead, as we all have more of a comfort zone there. It is a big
decision to make bold changes like this, and our thanks go out to the
management of Green Valley for making this great course even better.
Scoring on the day was not exceptional, however, and only
3 golfers managed to better their handicap.
The 15 handicap of John Baxter was the flight cut-off
point but John had it in the bag anyway with 38 points, the best score of
the day for the entire field. Well played Johnny, glad to see some new faces
up on the podium! The very consistent Peter LeNoury took 2nd place by count
back and came off with 19 points on the back to Dan Avon’s 18.
The father-son team of the travelling Tregurtha’s saw
little Alex (a stone lighter from the last trip) finish off the podium with
33 points. Father Barry Tregurtha (2 stone lighter) showed the boy how it is
done and took 1st in the B Flight with 37 points. Barry beat out the leader
of the pack of dingo’s Mr. Gary Emmett on count back, with fellow Aussie
Chicka Smiff with 3rd and Henry O’Brien rounding off the table with 4th
place. Henry won here last week with 39 points, so it is good to see him
still in the frame.
Good to see the boys back in town and some action
returning to our sleepy little fishing village. Thanks guys, and see you
next week.

It now takes us 38 minutes to comfortably get out to Khao
Kheow, thanks to the new bit of motorway that links to highway 7. Like the
internet, how did we ever live without it?
Khao Kheow seems to surprise many new visitors by just
how good the track is. The tranquility of this course, nestled in amongst
the old pineapple plantation there, is a refreshing and calming change from
the bustle of Pattaya. I think most golfers would rather get “back to
nature” and be up in the jungle than having houses surround you as on the
resort courses. Pete Dye found an ideal location for this amazing golf
course.
Kevin Woods certainly seemed to enjoy himself on the day
and returned 39 points on the card to clinch the win. Thanks also go to
Kevin for getting in one last shout before he left to head back to the UK,
ring da bell!
Gentleman George Bishop has just had his best round here
at T.G.C. since joining us in the last month or so. His 38 points were good
enough for a 2nd place, and I am sure of many more to come. Mark Wood is
back from the rigs to shoot a fine 37 and Adam Shane took the last medal for
4th.
A very big thank you to Phil Smedley for taking control
of the clipboard and running this week’s golf for us. You will be seeing
more of Phil here at the clubhouse and on the course as well. Another week
of terrific golf and good laughs all round, thanks again and keep it in the
fairway!

Hard work at Eastern Star
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Eastern Star on Monday,
13th August to play a stableford competition on the course which has been
improving steadily, by all recent accounts. Obviously the weekend holiday
had affected its progress as the greens were not as fine as they had been
boasted by members a week before and were quite inconsistent. It all
presaged a long and tough day at the course which has significantly
toughened up over recent years.
Sharing second place were Johnny Larsson from Norway and
Seil Revels with 32 points each and the day’s best came from Dave Edwards,
again, with a meagre, but hard won, 33 points.
Birdie ‘2’s? Forget it.
The Boss’s free beer was won deservedly by the returning
Erik Anttonen, for whom the Booby Bevy was also beckoning, but his blushes
were saved by a double zig-zag from greenside bunkers on the ninth and
decided the award in favour of Robbie Taylor.
At least ESR got one thing right on the day for the
promotional holiday fee had seen many people attend and this has to bode
well for future improvements to the track.
Masters shows his class
On Wednesday, 15th August, the Pattaya Golf Society
visited Bangpra Golf Club to play a stableford competition on the excellent
course which was in fine condition with very quick greens. What a problem
these were to cause as golfers found it difficult to get near some of the
pins and anything above the hole needed such a soft touch.
Scores were therefore low across the board and Garry
Hookey and Robbie Taylor found themselves sharing third place with 26 points
each! A country mile head in second place with 32 points was Seil Revels,
again posting the best gross of the day, repeating his eighty-one from
Monday. The winner was Peter Masters and his 35 points reflected a round of
great touch and control.
John O’Sullivan found some consolation in his birdie ‘2’
on the twelfth, the only one of the day and the Booby Bevy went to Garry
Hookey for his strange round which saw him score all but two of his points
on the front and back fives. Bangpra can certainly teach some harsh lessons.
Masters mark two
The Pattaya Golf Society ended another quality golf week
with a visit to Khao Kheow to play a stableford competition over the B and C
nines on a course which was still very soft with little run, but with well
paced and consistent greens.
Off the yellow tees it was a big “ask” for golfers to
shoot good scores but the older hands fared better than most with Joe
Niisato, Wichai Tananusorn and Mr Len all sharing second place with 33
points; Joe blowing an excellent chance on the final hole when his drive
found the water.
After lessons which have made subtle changes to his swing
Peter Masters is getting his golf act together again after a long and
frustration time coping with the unwelcome intrusion of the hosel and he
produced another fine display recording 35 points for the second successive
round to win the day.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Boss’s free beer draw
was won by Garry Hookey whilst the Booby Bevy went to newest member Sid
Elday whose boated of a fine birdie five in an otherwise mediocre round
which saw him propping up the field in his first IPGC competition.
So the week ended after excursions to ESR, exquisite
Bangpra and a fine Khao Kheow when good golf was put to the test throughout.

Reed signs off
in winning style
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, August 13, Eastern
Star – Stableford
A public holiday today and we were at Eastern Star with a
two divisional stableford competition and also the conclusion of a 36-hole
contest which included the previous Friday’s scores as well.
The course was very busy today but with the majority of
groups behind us, we still got around in 3 hours 40 minutes.
Wilf Latham, semi-retired and back with us, returned a
score of 35 to win division 1 ahead of Mikael Andersson in second two points
behind and Jon Lay, finally finishing 18 holes, was third with 32.
‘Countback’ Burnie reversed the normal procedure by
winning division 2 after beating Chris Reed 18/17 on the back nine, both
coming in with 34 points. Rodney Howett, a trifle embarrassed, picked up
third prize with 30 points.
In the overall two day competition, Wilf Latham beat
Mikael Andersson on a 35/33 count back after they both recorded 68 points
and in third place was Chris Voller with 67.
Wednesday, August 15,
Khao Kheow - Stableford
Our first visit here for many months and we started on
the par 5 on the C course around the water - a tough opening hole for
everyone. The first four groups teed off with no one in the water, then came
the fifth group with all division one players and it was a wet outcome for
the majority.
The cut today was 7-17 and 18+ and the best score of the
day came from Jeff Cordeiro, playing of 10, who won Division 1 with 38
points, scoring 17 on the front nine and 21 on the B course. Dave Richards
took second on 35 and Bryan Rought beat Daniel Willets on a 18/15 back nine
count back for third after they both came in with 32 points.
Lee Casey toped division 2 with 30 points followed by
Chris Reed who beat Roar Berger on a 18/17 back nine count back after
returning a meagre 28 points.
Near pins went to Mike Chatt, Bryan Rought (2), Chris
Voller, David Phillips and Fred Temminck.
Chris Voller birdied C3 and C8, and Dave Richards and
Bryan Rought both birdied B3 to split the ‘2’s pot in Division 1 while Fred
Temminck scored the only birdie ‘2’ in Division 2.
Friday, August 17,
Eastern Star - Stableford
The cut today was 7-17 in division 1 but the best score
came in division 2 from Chris Reed who was in his last game with us before
he returned Down Under to his teaching career. Chris came in with 36 points
to lead the organiser in second by three, while there was a warm welcome
back to Tony Holehouse who lost out to Joe Kubon on a 16/12 back nine count
back for third after they both scored 29 points.
Thirty-four points won division 1 honours for Marty Rock
and Chris Voller beat Jon Lay 19/17 on the back nine for second after they
both came in with 33 points.
Daniel Willits scored the only ‘2’ of the day to secure
the rollover pot in Division 1.
Near pins went to Marty Rock, Daniel Willets, Darryl
Blair, Rodney Howett and Sid Ottaway.
The Chiang Mai trip has now been penciled in for the week
commencing 21st October with four rounds of golf on the Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday, a four day overall competition with individual contests
for 2/3 divisions on each day. Contact Jomtien Golf and Siam Cats on Soi 5
Jomtien Beach Road for more information.

Graham doubles up; Cooney beached in the sand
Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green
Monday, August 13,Pattana
A & B – Stableford
Another public holiday today, but fortunately we had a
reasonable deal with Pattana, and arrived there to find the course quiet,
and the weather near perfect. After some discussion we elected to play off
the white tees, which at 6,900 yards represents one of the longer courses
that we play. The round progressed smoothly and was completed comfortably in
four hours.
![](pic/s24-Bunker%20golf.jpg)
Almost a winning return for
Geoff Hart on Friday.
Gerry Cooney continued his return to form to win the
honours on the day after a three-way tie on 34 points.
We were saying goodbye to Barry Murnin, who is returning
to South Carolina for a few weeks before returning to defend his Bunker
champion’s title later in the year.
1st Gerry Cooney (16) 34pts
2nd Geoff Williams (13) 34pts
3rd Barry Murnin (15) 34pts
Near Pins: Barry Murnin, John Graham and Geoff
Parker (2)
Wednesday, August 15,Green
Valley – Medal
A good turnout today for our only medal game this month,
on a bright sunny day at the popular Green Valley course. The revised
starting layout seems to suit most golfers better, with the toughest hole on
the course now back as the third hole, thereby reducing the threat of a
disastrous start to a medal round.
John Graham had another good day, and only a triple bogey
on the relatively straightforward 17th hole prevented
him from returning a more impressive score (handicap management?).
Geoff Parker had a poor outward nine, before staging an
impressive recovery, being just one over par for the first 6 holes on the
inward nine, before disaster struck on the par 3, 16th
hole, where he carded a 9! Back in the clubhouse it emerged that Geoff
Williams had exceeded even this achievement with both a 10 and a 9 on
his card, and he was dislodged from the podium for the first time in recent
weeks.
Over cold beer back at the Bowling Green, the concensus
was that we need to re-introduce more regular medal rounds, because playing
so many Stableford competitions is making the regular players careless and
lazy! Next month there will be two medal rounds – it is after all the real
game!
1st John Graham (10) net 72
2nd Mashi Kaneta (11) net 73
3rd Raleigh Gosney (17) net 74
Near Pins: Lee Butler, Geoff Williams, and Dave
Keats
Friday, August 17,Bangpra
– Stableford
14 golfers today set out to tackle the notoriously
difficult greens at Bangpra, and once again the course won, with 3-putts
being the order of the day. The course was in its normal excellent condition
and the weather was near perfect, if a little on the warm side.
The first 3-ball had a clear run and were finished in
good time, and an enjoyable day was had by all, as all the groups progressed
smoothly with no hold ups.
We welcomed back Geoff Hart after several months layoff
in the U.K., and he nearly pulled off the big surprise of the day coming a
close second on a count back to the in-form John Graham.
Gerry Cooney suffered a setback to his recent return to
form when he had 5 shots in 3 different bunkers on the 16th
hole. Even Field Marshall Rommel would have been impressed with the amount
of sand flying in all directions, and with the ball flying from bunker to
bunker like an artillery shell.
1st John Graham (10) 34pts
2nd Geoff Hart (21) 34pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 32pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Gerry Cooney and John
Graham.
The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who
currently play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd
Road and Soi Buakhaow. We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays,
and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive
golf competition why not come and join us. We meet at the Bowling Green at 9
a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players are always welcome.
Note: Due to the imminent closure of the Bowling
Green, the Bunker Boys have been looking for a new home, and we’re pleased
to announce that the decision has been made to move to The Ranch. The Ranch
is located on Pattaya 3rd Road, in front of the fire
station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar. We’ll be playing our first
game out of The Ranch on 3rd September, contact Buff
086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries.
The society is also in the process of resurrecting our website which you
can find at http://www.bunkersociety.com.

Phillip Cass wins again
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 13, The
Emerald - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Phillip Cass (23) 36pts
2nd Don Everett (21) 34pts
3rd John Wood (23) 33pts
4th Phil Stevenson (22) 30pts
5th Patrick Scullion (22) 30pts
In a week that saw temperatures on the all the courses
played soaring way over the norm for this time of year, the scores also
soared with only one player from the three competitions managing to play to
his handicap and all of the CSS’s rising by three, with two of the
competitions becoming non-counting for upward review of handicap.
![](pic/s25-Haven01.jpg)
Phillip Cass.
The week started at Emerald where as usual the local rule
of ‘lift and place’ in the fairway was in use as following heavy rain
overnight carts were not allowed on the fairways.
Phillip Cass, after featuring several times recently,
again reached the top step of the podium with a level handicap round that
was good enough by two to win as all the prizes on the day went to players
with handicaps of more than twenty.
Don Everett took second place with a very strong showing
on the back nine that garnered 19 points after starting out very slowly on
the opening nine.
John Wood came back to Pattaya with some form and easily
ended up in third even after managing to score zero points from the last two
holes, which left travelling companion, Phil Stevenson in fourth after he
had won a count back over Patrick Scullion with a better 16 to 14 over the
inward half as Patrick took a bit of a dive for a blob on the last.
Derek Dickson holed the only 2 in the first division to
sweep the pot while once again there were none in the second division.
Prior to the presentations there were welcome backs for
Mick Bogunovich, Phil Stevenson, John Wood and Derek Dickerson.
Wednesday, August 15,
Eastern Star - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Rodney Hayes (14) 33pts
2nd Alwyne Burley (18) 31pts
3rd Mike Dabanovich (11) 28pts
4th Patrick Scullion (22) 27pts
5th Markku Tynell (26) 27pts
If the players had thought that Monday’s course was
difficult they had an even tougher day when they travelled to Eastern Star,
where although they found the course to be in about as good a condition as
had been seen over the last several months, with even the greens not
attracting any criticism, the weather conditions of steaming hot left all of
the contenders completely exhausted by the end of their rounds. The scores
told their own story as once again the CSS went out three and the day became
non-counting.
![](pic/s25-Haven02.jpg)
Rodney Hayes.
Rodney Hayes had the benefit of a cart with a flag that
meant the walking was at a minimum and it may well have contributed to his
win, although he too needed several minutes to recover after the last hole
before he could move from the cart, but still could not make the day a
counting one as he was left one shot higher than the standard required, but
just enough to squeeze out the win.
Alwyne Burley, who spends most of his non-golfing time
explaining to Rodney how to play the game, nearly did enough to show that he
might be worth listening to at some stage as he slipped into second place
two shots behind.
Mike Dabanovich had a hard time convincing his caddy that
he was a regular golfer after starting out with just two points from the
first four holes, although once or twice he had hit the ball further than
she could point and did just sufficient to take third place.
Patrick Scullion went one better by winning the count
back this time with a better 18 to 15, which left Markku Tynell in fifth
spot.
There were no 2’s in either division, and in fact there
were not even any 3’s as the course showed all its teeth, with the par
threes being particularly difficult in a the wind that was so strong and hot
it could have been from a blast furnace.
Friday, August 17, Phoenix
- Stableford
CSS 75 Counting
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Barry Winton (5) 34pts
2nd Jeff Cordiero (10) 33pts
3rd Brian Libbey (10) 32pts
4th Rodney Hayes (14) 32pts
Division 2 (16+)
1st Alwyne Burley (18) 33pts
2nd Seppo Sadeharju (22) 33pts
3rd Stephen Beard (22) 32pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 31pts
An excellent turnout in honour of Tony Barritt’s last
appearance on the golf course for an indeterminable period meant that
unusually two divisions were required, with the cut coming at the almost
standard fifteen and below for the first and sixteen and above for the
second.
![](pic/s25-Haven03.jpg)
Alwyne Burley.
Once again the conditions were more akin to a Turkish
bath house than the wide open spaces of the Mountain and Lakes courses from
the white tees and certainly had a big effect on the CSS going up to an
unprecedented 75 for a standard Stableford competition, which was even more
surprising considering that the course was in excellent condition with the
greens running very fast and flat and the fairways in pristine condition and
as good as any course in the area.
Barry Winton did enough to take the first division after
what for him from his handicap would be viewed as a disastrous start, with
just five points scored from the first five holes with the first par of the
round not coming until the sixth hole, but a much improved back nine sealed
the win by a single shot to leave him a very surprised victor.
Second spot went to Jeff Cordiero just one back after he
had returned a solid card with just one blob shown.
Third place went to Brian Libbey after he won a count
back over Rodney Hayes with a better 19 to 17.
The second division was a very close affair with Alwyne
Burly just getting the nod over Seppo Sadeharju after winning a count back
by a margin of 18 to 15 to leave Seppo missing out on his first ever win in
Thailand after returning his best ever score and the first below a hundred.
Third place was filled by Stephen Beard after a fantastic
inward half of twenty one points following an awful start which had seen he
and his partner, Barry Winton, playing so badly that they were impossibly
seemingly six down after five in their four-ball match, although it was in
fact only one down after six.
Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Mark
Ridgway and welcome backs for Jeff Cordiero, Alan Griffiths, Barry Traynor,
after a yearlong sabbatical, and Tony Barritt for whom it was also his
farewell day prior to returning to London for an unspecified time.
At last the second division 2’s pool was taken with
Markku Tynell holding his nerve to slide in a ten-footer to claim the huge
rollover pot, while Barry Traynor (of course), Al Keith, Mike Dabanovich
together with Barry Winton and Rodney Hayes with two each claimed one thirty
seventh of Markku’s total in the first division.
Note. If you would like to play with The Haven
group, you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at
185 Soi 13, between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All
transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up
prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can
be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

Owen hits top form
PSC golf from Mulligans Lakeside
![](pic/s26-Mulligans995.jpg)
Thursday’s winners Owen
Walkley and Willem Lasonder.
Tuesday, August 13,
Pattana - Stableford
Tuesday was a visit to Pattana where we played the B & C
combination, which was in good condition, leaving no excuses for the poor
form displayed by some of our regular members; just put it down to a bad
day/week at the course.
Unaffected by other’s drop off in form, Owen Walkley (12)
played well to return a solid 38 points ahead of Allan Cassin (11), who
reportedly had a hot day with the putter and recorded 35 points. Near pins
were picked up by Allan & Jeff with 2.
Thursday, August 15,
Century Chonburi - Stableford
Century Chonburi was our venue for Thursday’s game, the
course represents good value and is in reasonable condition currently.
Owen Walkley retained his good form, today shooting a
sparkling 41 points off his 12 handicap to easily lead the way home from
Willem Lasonder (22), who himself had a solid 38 points. These guys really
cleared out on the majority of the field, again showing that good scoring
was out there, if your game was on.
Near pins were shared around today between Clive, Owen &
Jeff.
ML golfers again continued their support of the PSC at
their monthly tournament, but no-one from our crew had any success, other
than some lucky draws, but we enjoyed the day and managed a few laughs as
well, there’s always next time!
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on
Tuesday & Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call
089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers &
good golfing!

their way to Eastern Star early in the morning of Friday 17th August there
was rain in the air – and that’s where it stayed all day. The 69 competitors
in this month’s tournament arrived to a quick efficient check-in and
registration. Then off to the course – either 1st or 10th tee.

B Flight winner Barry Copestake.
The course was in excellent but challenging condition as
Eastern Star had a major competition the following day – with some pins in
interesting positions. This proved to be true with a number of near pins not
claimed.
After rounds just a little over 4 hours in duration, the
players handed their cards in and from the comments it would appear the
course won with just a few exceptions.
The low gross winner was Paul Bray (4) with a gross 82.
‘A’ Flight – playing medal - was a close finish with Jim
Cleaver (13) having a net 76 and Brian Parrish (12) a shot behind.
‘B’ Flight saw Barry Copestake (18) top with an equal
best of the day with 37 points.
‘C’ Flight saw another 37 points from Henry Wong (21) to
take the flight.
Only a few ladies today but it required a count back as
Marlene Prudden (24) and Sim Davis (23) both secured 35 points with Marlene
winning by having a better back 9.

There was plenty of time – despite the Friday traffic –
to arrive at Lewiinski’s for a drink and a chat before enjoying an excellent
buffet provided by Colin and his staff.
Once all were satisfied Nigel called order and welcomed
all and introduced Joe Mooneyham the PSC Golf Chairman.
Joe thanked all players today and expressed his
appreciation to Colin for another fine buffet and first class service from
his delightful staff. Joe reminded members that the next monthly was a
special charity event on Friday 21st September. It will be at the
prestigious Siam Plantation with a shotgun start at 12.30 with the
presentation and buffet in the clubhouse – sign-up sheets are at the PSC
office and Joe asked that members sign up early.
Back to Nigel to announce the winners – Joe presented the
prizes, which was followed by the lucky draw and good night!
Full results are on the PSC web-site at www.pattaya sports.org and on the
club notice board.

Dolphins succumb to Shark attack

Pattaya’s United’s Rodion
Dyachenko, left, shields the ball from Chonburi defender Suree Sukha during
their Thai Premier League match at the Nongpue Stadium in Pattaya, Saturday,
August 18.
A brace of goals either side of half time by veteran
striker Pipob On-Mo and Brazilian Thiago Cunha enabled Chonburi FC to close
the gap on league leaders Muang Thong United and also condemn local rivals
Pattaya United to their ninth loss of the season last Saturday at the
Nongpue Stadium in Pattaya.
In a passionate encounter United started the brighter of
the two teams and should have taken the lead as early as the fifth minute
when Patipol Phetwiset missed a great chance in front of goal.
The opening score would come at the other end of the
pitch however, and when it came is was a touch of class from the Chonburi
forwards who carved out a shooting chance for On-Mo, and the 33-year old
Chonburi skipper added the finishing touch by sending an unerring shot into
the far corner of the net past the despairing dive of Narit.
United fought to get themselves back into the contest and
almost equalized on the stroke of half time when Anuwat Inyin pulled the
ball down on the edge of the Chonburi area and fired in a fierce drive that
keeper Hathairattanakool did well to tip over the bar.
The ‘Sharks’ goalkeeper would be called on again
immediately after the break to prevent a powerful downward header by
Pattaya’s Rodion Dyachenko from leveling the scores but the game would be
turned on its head midway through the second half when Pattaya forward O.J.
Obatola received his marching orders from the referee after elbowing
Chonburi defender Suttinan Phuk-hom.
Down to 10 men Pattaya struggled to keep hold of the ball
and Chonburi took advantage to double their lead in the 80th
minute as Sompob Nilwong was robbed of possession in his own area by Thiago
who then smartly bent the ball around Narit and into the far corner of the
net.
Chonburi could easily have added to their 2 goal cushion
in the final 10 minutes of the game as gaps started to appear in the United
back line which the ‘Sharks’ began to pierce at will. A shot rebounded off
the foot of the United post and another was cleared off the goal-line but
there was to be no further scoring and the match finished in a 2-0 victory
for the visitors.
United slipped down a place to thirteenth in the table
following the loss while Chonburi gained three points on Muang Thong United
whose game against third placed Buriram was postponed due to a waterlogged
pitch.
Pattaya United’s next match is an away game at Wuachon
United on Sunday, August 26. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.

The 2nd Pattaya Youth Volleyball
Cup was contested earlier this month with seven school and junior teams
taking part in this blossoming, all action tournament.
Organized by the Pattaya Volleyball Club in co-operation
with City Hall, the three day competition took place from August 11-14 at
the Pattaya School No. 7 and was split into two divisions, with Male U 14
and U16 teams battling it out to be crowed this year’s champions.
When the dust had settled and the results were in, it was
discovered that the team from Wang Namyen School in Srakaew province had
carried off the U14 honours after defeating the hosts, Pattaya School No. 7,
in the final match.
In the U16 division meanwhile, Pattaya School no. 11
ensured that local pride was restored after they downed the senior Wang
Namyen School team in the final game.
The winners and runners up from both divisions received
trophies, certificates and cash prizes from local Pattaya City dignitaries.
