Trip –
Saturday, 18 August 2012
Again! This was the fourth straight trip seven of us set
out expecting high winds and the consequent heavy swell seas. And that is
exactly what we encountered. The conditions precluded us from traversing our
normal fishing grounds and we had to be satisfied drifting backwards and
forwards on the leeward side of the islands.
Fortunately the pla-daeng were again plentiful and
comprised most of our bag catches, supplemented with the occasional snapper
and grouper. No large fish again but all of us bar one finished the day with
bags of 5 to 8 kilos and were quite satisfied we had successfully battled
the conditions.
We welcomed a newcomer, Robbie Fathers, who also handled
the conditions well but had a smaller bag catch to take home. We hope he
will join us again in future trips.
Trip – Thursday, 23 August
2012
At last! Eight of us departed from Khram Marine at 07:00
in pristine weather conditions. Light winds and mirror seas – it was
wonderful after the previous four trips.
A big welcome to the Ban Chang contingent, viz John
O’Neil and Jason Manley. John went home with a reasonable catch but the day
went to Jason who landed a two plus kilo coral trout – a magnificent fish!
As I have achieved surplus funds this month 3 regulars,
John, Peter and Charlie each received baht 500 discounts. Jeff and I
received baht 500 discount each on the previous trip.
We all adjourned to our regular restaurant and celebrated
the return of good fishing conditions partaking with perhaps 1 or 2 more
than usual brown beverages.
Five trips are scheduled for September 2012. They are as
follows: Saturday, 1 September (fully booked); Thursday, 6 September
(several places available); Saturday, 15 September (fully booked); Thursday,
20 September (several places available); Saturday, 29 September (several
places available).

‘Bubbles’ & ‘Two Corsets’ sparkle at Crystal Bay
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Preston & Graham Rice.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 20, Crystal
Bay B & C – Stableford
It was a “hive of industry” at The Growling Swan as we
assembled prior to our departure to another of our very favourite courses,
Crystal Bay. It was necessary to book an extra tee spot as we were
over-subscribed with 26 keen golfers ready to tackle this popular layout.
We handed out hearty welcomes to Bob Akapita from Gove in
the Northern Territory of Australia, Paul Sharples back from his work in
Oman, Fiona & Larry Crebo from Pattaya/Kuala Lumpur, Takeshi Hakozaki from
Japan, Tony Campbell & Graham Preston from Melbourne, Australia and Peter
Bye from his job at the North West Shelf in Western Australia. We were sadly
saying farewell to Alan “Colonel” Sanders who will shortly return to North
Queensland, Australia.
Three minivans were necessary for transportation on this
morning and we got away right on time at 8.30 am and headed off down Highway
3 in the heavy Monday morning Pattaya traffic. There were no major traffic
hold ups however and we arrived at the course just 43 minutes later where we
found that it was not too busy and sure enough we were invited to tee off at
our leisure.
Our first group, a three-ball, teed off 23 minutes ahead
of schedule on B1 in super weather conditions although fairly hot and humid
with not much breeze. As ever the course was in great nick and the greens
firm, true and at times fairly quick with some tricky hole positions.
As a three-ball we proceeded at a fairly good pace
although the Thai two-ball in front of us were obviously in no hurry and at
one of the par threes actually teed off and then sat down for a drink for
ten minutes before continuing. I couldn’t resist just politely mentioning to
them that perhaps they should “get a move on”. Despite this we managed to
complete B nine in just on two hours and as we slowed down slightly on C
nine due to the heat we were just a touch slower but managed to finish the
full round in a little over four hours & five minutes.
It was a very enjoyable day with excellent company,
terrific weather although a tad hot and a pleasure to play on this fine golf
course.
Having a very good field enabled us to have 2 grades with
five podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Grade for
21 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes, individually
sponsored by Scott Lobenwein, Mike Gosden, Larry Crebo & Max Bracegirdle.
Also longest first putts on B9 & C9 sponsored by Stu Rifkin & Graeme
Preston. Many thanks to these guys for their generosity!
Last start Compass Cap winner Graham “Bubbles” Rice went
from Zero to Hero and took out the A Grade with a magnificent 44 points, 3
points clear of his good mate Stu “Heineken” Rifkin in second place. Bob
Akapita played very steady golf to capture third spot with 40 points, 2
points ahead of Takeshi Hazozaki in fourth place and Neil Skilton completed
the podium with 37 points to take fifth spot.
Another recent multiple Compass Cap winner Max “Two
Corsets” Bracegirdle had a terrific reversal of form and had 43 points to
win the B Grade section, 6 points ahead of Stephen Newton in second place.
Brian Noguer had 35 points to finish third with Bernie McCart fourth on 32
points & Fiona Crebo fifth with 31 points.
![](pic/s8-Growling-2.jpg)
Graham Buckingham, Peter Grey
& Peter Blackburn.
A Flight (0-17)
1st Graham Rice (13) 44pts
2nd Stu Rifkin (16) 41pts
3rd Bob Akapita (17) 40pts
4th Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 38pts
5th Neil Skilton (7) 37pts
B Flight (18+)
1st Max Bracegirdle (26) 43pts
2nd Stephen Newton (31) 37pts
3rd Brian Noguer (22) 35pts
4th Berbie McCart (30) 32pts
5th Fiona Crebo (22) 31pts
Near Pins: B4 – Mike Gosden; B6 – Stu Rifkin; C4 –
Scott Lobenwein; C7 – Peter Bye
Long Putts: B9 – Peter Blackburn; C9 – Bob Akapita
The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with
the worst score on the day) was, much to their delight, not Peter Grey or
Andrew Allen but indeed another Melbournian, Graeme Preston, who insisted on
wearing the Cap for several hours afterwards.
Hunter paraded Deefa the Dog who of course collected many
donations to charity from our very generous Growling Swan crew.
Thursday, August 23,
Bangpakong – Stableford
We had 20 keen golfers signed up for the trip to
Bangpakong Riverside Country Club and we assembled at The Growling Swan in
readiness for the longer than usual journey.
Hearty welcomes were handed out to Roy Dayton from San
Francisco and his lady Kae & also Alain Taddei’s brother Herve from France.
It was also good to see the return of Tony Alcorn from Queensland, Australia
after a few weeks away. Bon Voyage was the go for Bob Akapita who was
returning to his work in Gove in the Northern Territory of Australia after
just a week in Pattaya. Gladly he will be back here in another 4 weeks.
We were hoping for an early departure but as usual Sandy
was running late, nonetheless we managed to get away 5 minutes ahead of
schedule at 8.25 am. It is a fairly long trip and apparently puts a few
people off but with 2 full minivans and plenty of chatter along the way we
were there in just 66 minutes and found this lovely course to be quite busy
which is to be expected on a Sports Day. We were however able to send our
first group away right on time at 10.00 am and the weather once more was
terrific but this time not too hot.
The long journey is certainly worth it as the course was
once more in great shape and the first timers to the course were naturally
suitably impressed as they enjoyed the lush fairways & very good greens,
although many of them were a tad slow due to recent sanding. Our group were
enjoying the day immensely with some pretty good scoring and even
encountering several hold-ups due to the fairly heavy traffic on the golf
course did not stop us from having both grade winners in the four-ball.
After a couple of drink stops and several waits on tees
we managed to complete our full round in four hours & twenty minutes.
With the good field it enabled us to have 2 grades with
four podium spots in each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for
19 and over. We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first
putts on the 9th & 18th greens.
Once more there was no shortage of sponsors for these “novelties” and thanks
go out to Peter Bye, Bob Akapita, John Pierrel, Max Bracegirdle, Roy Dayton
& Graham Buckingham.
Your writer managed to recover some of his lost form and
finished first in the A Grade with 41 points, just 1 point ahead of Martin
Todd in second place and Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei finished third
with 39 points. A three way count back was necessary to decide fourth place
with Bob Akapita (20 point back nine) successful from Mike “Hunter” Gosden
(18 point back nine) and Takeshi Hakozaki (17 point back nine), all three
having 35 points.
One of my other playing partners, Graham “Buckers”
Buckingham took out the B Grade with 41 points, 6 points ahead of Max “Two
Corsets” Bracegirdle in second place. On 31 points came Roy Dayton in third
spot with Sandy “Leiperfrog” Leiper (16 point back nine, 15 points on the
last 6 holes) winning the count back for fourth place from Kae (16 point
back nine, 11 points on the last 6 holes), both finishing with 28 points.
A Flight (0-18)
1st Peter Blackburn (11) 41pts
2nd Martin Todd (7) 40pts
3rd Alain Taddei (18) 39pts
4th Bob Akapita (17) 35pts
B Flight (19+)
1st Graham Buckingham (22) 41pts
2nd Max Bracegirdle (24) 35pts
3rd Roy Dayton (23) 31pts
4th Sandy Leiper (31) 28pts
Near Pins: 4th – Sandy Leiper; 7th – Martin Todd;
13th – Bob Akapita; 16th – Peter Blackburn
Long Putts: 9th – Takeshi Hakozaki; 18th – Tony
Campbell
The winner of the Compass Cap was “mine host” of The
Growling Swan, Peter Grey, who once more managed to capture this prestigious
(not) award. Back at The Growling Swan afterwards the beer was flowing and a
good time was had by all after yet another terrific golf outing.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any
persuasion – low & high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We
generally play Mondays & Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly
The Bunker Bar) in Soi Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at
8.30 am. For bookings or more information please contact Peter on 0806 351

Phil has a hectic eclectic
PSC golf from The Golf Club
![](pic/s10Golf-1.jpg)
Phil Smedley, Brian Prudden,
Mark Wood and Terry Wagner.
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 20, Green
Valley (White tees) – Stableford/ Eclectic (Day 1)
1st Phil Smedley (14) 43pts
2nd Brian Prudden (19) 41pts
3rd Mark Wood (9) 39pts
4th Terry Wagner (21) 39pts
This was Day 1 of the “2 day Eclectic” at Rayong Green
Valley and the competition was fierce. We have not had so many good scores
in quite some time, so it was many a smiling face at the bar when the clock
tolled 6 chimes.
![](pic/s10Golf-2.jpg)
Phil Smedley was the master
of the 2-day eclectic at Green Valley.
The course condition was fantastic, the weather was
perfect, and all 29 golfers showed up right on time for this great day of
golf. As mentioned last week, this “new” hole layout for the first 4 holes
at Green Valley is proving to be a winner!
If you have not played an “Eclectic” before, here is the
format. You play the same course for two days straight, then you take your
first round scorecard and play the second day trying to improve those holes
where improvement is necessary. So if you made a double bogey on the 6th
on day 1, then today you need to get at least a bogey or better. That’s all
there is to it, but it sounds a whole lot easier than it is! The pressure is
on, and only the strong survive. Of course it does help to have a decent
first round, but being this funny old game that it is, everyone is in with a
chance.
Phil Smedley had an astounding first round. He played his
best ever round in Thailand to walk off the 18th green
with a big red “43” circled at the top of his scorecard. Now that’s what I
call a good start! Phil started his first round with “double
bogey-bogey-bogey” on the first 3 holes so the pressure was on for a tidy
start on Day 2.
The ‘Silver Fox’ himself, Brian Prudden, was not far
behind on 41 points from the new PSC “Silver Tees”. Our thanks go out to
P.S.C. Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham for initiating this great idea that
allows those over 70’s to play from just behind the red tees. All the
courses have been re-rated to adjust for this allowance, and it is great
that all of our “Sterling” golfers are now back in the game! Hey, no moaning
from the rest, you will get there sooner than you think.
Mark Wood played his usual consistent round to put him in
third with 39, just beating a p***ed off Terry Wagner on count back. Yes
Terry, you would have won with a 39 the last week and the week before, not
come in 4th, but this is a cruel, cruel game,
remember? Since our inception 5 years ago, The Golf Club has installed
complimentary stone pillars around the bar area for head-banging.
Tuesday, August 21, Green
Valley (White tees) – Stableford/ Eclectic (Day 2)
1st Terry Wagner (21) 40pts
2nd Alain Pelsherbe (16) 39pts
3rd Mike Newbert (13) 39pts
4th George Bishop (20) 36pts
Eclectic Final Results
1st Phil Smedley (14) 48pts
2nd Terry Wagner (21) 46pts
3rd Alain Pelsherbe (16) 45pts
4th George Bishop (20) 45pts
Time now for the second installment of the Eclectic, with
the pressure on for the lads taking on the challenge of Green Valley once
more. There was a bit of confusion this morning as I had put the wrong
departure time up on the daily sign-up sheet (Hey, the monthly sheet was
right!), so my apologies to all the gang. It was the first time in 5 years,
so I guess that early dementia thing might be something to watch out for.
They say insanity is hereditary- you get it from your kids. Don’t worry, I
shall find an excuse. Anyway, on to the comp…
Phil Smedley started out with no improvement on his first
day’s 3 holes, so it was not looking good for him. Terry wanted his revenge
after a brilliant 39, and he pretty much got it. Alain, George, and a dozen
others were still in the hunt so it was going to be an afternoon of pressure
and pleasure.
Visiting American Mike Newbert had an improved scorecard
for the second installment after not placing on the first day’s golf. His 39
points for Day 2 took him to 3rd place on the podium,
losing to Alain Pelsherbe on count back with 39’s. Alain came home in 2nd
on the day and Terry Wagner had his comeuppance to win the day with a strong
40 points. Terry’s fantastic combined score of 79 would have won in a
different comp, such is the nature of the beast called an eclectic. Well
played buddy!
But it was Phil Smedley, ending up with a great 48
Eclectic stableford points, who won the 2-day comp and it seems it was
mostly due to his tremendous first round of 43 that carried him through to
victory. It just goes to show you that you cannot give up after a bad start,
or in Phil’s case, two bad starts. Just keep plugging away and play as best
you can and see what happens. Well, it sure happened for Phil, so great job
of hangin’ in there mate! Don’t forget, Phil had the added burden of getting
the lads out to the course and running the tournament, which is a big
distraction to one’s own game, as anyone who has run a golf comp will attest
to.
Thanks to all who participated, and we will definitely be
doing this format again in the very near future.
Friday, August 24, The
Emerald (White Tees) – Stableford
1st Dale Shier (14) 40pts
2nd Maurice Bonman (18) 39pts
3rd John Pierrel (15) 38pts
4th Jim Dundon (13) 35pts
It was not going to be an easy day out - the Emerald
course is always a difficult test of golf even on the best of days. In the
Pattaya area there are many more forgiving layouts than this Faldo-Muirhead
track, but it does lure you back for some strange reason. It’s a bit like
that ‘bird’ you had that love/hate relationship with when you were 24; she
abuses her gift of beauty to wrap you around her little finger and toy with
your soul.
On this day, the hair and make-up were tussled and
smeared, but still nice to wake up to. All around the greens were G.U.R.,
for the record. There is an invasion of broadleaf grasses that are being
dealt with, so the course has been in better shape to say the least. Still,
a determined golfer like Dale Shier rose to the occasion with 40 points on
the card, even with a few silly putts lost to the ‘Gods’ of golf.
Maurice B. found himself one stroke off the win with 39,
and the travelling golfer John Pierrel one more back on 38. John will
feature in upcoming events, I am sure.
Jimmy Dundon is now back, and in town for a couple of
months, so a big thank you Jim for that liter of Chivas to assist this
writer on this and fruturre wyrite-ups whhyst gjolff forjs patpers. Great
job Dale, and have a lovely time back in Blighty!

Waycott captures “Take it Easy” Monthly Medal
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
![](pic/s11-Outback996-1.jpg)
Friday’s Monthly Medal winner
Kev Waycott, left, with Noy (4th Div 2) and Joe (1st Div 1)
Monday, August 20, Burapha
- Stableford
With Capt’ Steve having a break away in Kanchanaburi
ahead of the upcoming big Hua Hin tournament, it was the turn of General
Jack’s to start the regular Monday event at Burupha. A good field of 26
Outbackers, which reportedly was more than half the bookings for the entire
day, were away 30 minutes early on the otherwise deserted A & B loops.
![](pic/s11-Outback996-2.jpg)
The new Monthly Medal trophy.
After the rpevious week’s ‘white tee’ trial, it was back
to the blue tees for the entire field but the scoring remained below average
with the best of the day being a lowly 34pts. The two divisions were both
won with that score, Dennis Pelly (10) and Bruce Milner (16) taking Div A
and Div B respectively.
There were four ‘2’s; the par 3’s here are the 3rd, 6th,
12th and 17th with ‘2’s come from Bernie Stafford and two from Pete
Stonebridge in regular fashion but Joe got his ‘2’ on the short par 4 11th,
well played Joe!
Div A (0-13)
1st Dennis Pelly (10) 34pts
2nd Colin Goon (4) 33pts
3rd Paul Greenaway (8) 31pts
Div B (14+)
1st Bruce Milner (16) 34pts
2nd Joe Mooneyham (14) 33pts
3rd John O’Keefe (16) 32pts
Monday, August 20, Khao
Kheow – Stableford
The golfers are still not keen to return to Khao Kheow as
today we were just a ‘five’ ball of good mates out for a game and a right
old laugh as we hacked around the course; none of us playing very well,
except for John (36pts).
![](pic/s11-Outback996-3.jpg)
John Foote was a winner at
Laem Chabang and Siam Plantation.
The course was in reasonable condition although the weeds
have taken over some of the fairways but the greens were fine and fast.
Khao Kheow had reduced the carts to only 400 Baht each
and with the low season green fee, the course represents very good value for
money.
Apart from the day’s winner, the remaining four, Brian
Maddox, David Davies, Suzi Lawton, and Sugar Ray Handford, are all in the
line-up for Hua Hin but there were no pointers to any form for the bookies.
There were no ‘2’s
1st John Stafford (18) 36pts
2nd Brian Maddox (22) 30pts
3rd David Davies (25) 28pts
Tuesday, August 21,
Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
Welcome back to Ke Persson and Mam, who were having their
first game after their summer away; they joined a 12 Outbacker field, which
included four ladies, on the local nine-hole course. The men play the first
nine from the whites and the second nine from blues but the ladies, who are
put back on the whites for their back nine, found it tough going out there
today.
With five of the top six here today, also in the Hua Hin
line-up, it was Geoff Moodie and Pottsy, both with 37pts, who led the way,
ahead of Jingjo (36) and Dave the Pipe on 34.
No ‘2’s were recorded.
1st Geoff Moodie (28) 37pts
2nd Campbell Potts (17) 37pts
3rd Martin O’Neill (29) 36pts
Tuesday, August 21, Laem
Chabang – Stableford
13 Outbackers travelled to Laem Chabang today playing off
the whites on courses B & A. As seems to be the norm here, we were held up
by a couple of four-balls which made the round very slow (just of short of
five hours) but this didn’t put a damper to John Foote’s score, as he
followed up his excellent round on Sunday with Lewiinski’s at Green Valley,
with another great show of form here, which resulted in a handicap reduction
of more than two shots.
Way back in second was Mark McDonald with 34 with Martin
Crichton taking third with 33.
The course was in good condition from tee to green with
the greens being slick and running true.
Welcome to John & Lynn Foote, who are here on a short
visit as John returns to Aus on his way back from work in China.
There was only one ‘2’ from Andy Robertson on the
eleventh hole [A2].
1st John Foote (21) 42pts
2nd Mark McDonald (3) 34pts
3rd Martin Crichton (16) 33pts
Wednesday, August 22, Siam
Plantation – Stableford
There’s always something special about coming to this
course, which we are surely going to miss at the end of the low season, when
unfortunately normal rates will be resumed, thus putting the course off
limits to many of us regular weekly golfers. In the meantime however, we
shall continue to come here every Wednesday until the end of September with
an 8.36 start time.
18 out there today on the fabulous Sugarcane (A) loop and
Tapioca (B) with the first group teeing off on A, precisely on time and a
last two groups teeing off at the same time as the starter let one group
start on B.
The biggest pointer to form so far this week ahead of Hua
Hin, came from Paul Greenaway who kept his head down to play his front nine
in two under gross (24pts) only to lose his way slightly on the back as he
perhaps struggled with rope burns, to finish the round with a brilliant
40pts. This was five ahead of his nearest opponent in either division with
Paul Sharples getting second in Div A on 35 and John Foote, notching up his
third win in four days, also with 35. to win Div B.
Welcome back to Rod Crosswell (second with 33) and also
welcome to Tom Gingerich (third with 33) having his first game with the
Outback.
Surprisingly, there were no ‘2’s.
Div A (0–13)
1st Paul Greenaway (8) 40pts
2nd Paul Sharples (10) 35pts
3rd Mark McDonald (3) 35pts
Div B (14+)
1st John Foote (19) 35pts
2nd Rod Crosswell (14) 33pts
3rd Tom Gingerich (16) 33pts
Friday, August 24, Green
Valley – Stableford
Thirty-two Outbackers turned out for Green Valley for the
monthly medal; a week earlier than usual due to the upcoming Hua Hin
tournament. Since the first three holes of the course have been changed
around; starting off on a Par 5 makes it far less daunting than having to
hit over the water as we did before.
The course was once again in very good condition and the
greens have now just about recovered from the recent work, so it was a
pleasure to putt on them.
This week is the fourth of our recent instated monthly
medal tournaments, usually held on the last Friday of every month and the
General has been promising a trophy that is something special, a trophy
which many would be proud to have in one’s house. Well at last we’ve seen
one.
Jack got the idea sometime ago when a his good friend
Mick showed him the unusual piece by a Canadian Company called Hoselton
Sculptures; the trophy stands about 8 inches high and is finished in gold
lacquer and black. With today’s and the next 11 month’s sponsors already on
board, Jack is hoping that these will become a trophy to be proud of.
As the trophies were not ready for the first three
monthly medals, the Outback has decided to sponsor them themselves but
today’s (trophy) is the first of many, courtesy of one of Pattaya’s leading
bike and car rental companies, Take it Easy.
So to the golf, which was split into two divisions and
was generally of a good standard, although the competition scratch score
worked out to be one higher than usual at 72.
Kev Waycott was today’s trophy winner with a net 69 and
is well on his way to becoming a single digit golfer, while Bruce Milner,
having flown over from the Philippines, won Div 2 with a net 70.
Div 1 went to the incumbent PSC Golf Chairman, Joe
Mooneyham, who just scraped in playing off 14 (13.5 exact), beating Sel
Wegner on a count back but did enough to find himself back on 13 next time
he lines up with the Outback.
The low gross winner (77) was Mark McDonald for which he
will shortly receive a medal.
A couple of stats regarding the round, for a change the
stroke index 1 (now the 3rd hole) was not the most
difficult hole today, surprisingly it was the par 4, 6th
hole (scoring ave 5.52) followed by the par 5, 11th
hole (scoring ave 6.50).
There were four ‘2’s from John Player (9th),
Sunanta Duangwaw & Bernie Stafford (12th), and Dennis
Pelly (16th)
Monthly Medal
1st Kev Waycott (10) net 69
Div A (0-15)
1st Joe Mooneyham (14) net71
2nd Sel Wegner (12) net 71

Ian ‘lose change’ cashes in
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
![](pic/s12-Lewiinski.jpg)
Sunday winners Bob Newell and
Ian Halfpenny flank Jimmy, the club captain.
Sunday, August 19, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Ian Halfpenny (14) 42pts
2nd Bob Newell (6) 37pts
3rd Tom Byrne (14) 35pts
B Flight
1st Jimmy Smiles (20) 38pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (19) 34pts
3rd Shaun Cooke (20) 32pts
Near Pins: No 4 Ed Wyckoff; No 9 Bob Newell; No 12
Sim Davis; No 16 George Collis.
Ian ‘lose change’ Halfpenny is never far from the brass
ring. His name can be found amongst the flight leaders on many of his Sunday
visits to the society. However on this Sunday, he not only took the man of
the match and A Flight with 42 points, but also added a very healthy ‘2’.
‘Broadmoor’ Bob, who attributes his golf power to a swing
he learned in Wandsworth wielding a truncheon, took the second place with a
steady 37 points, also with a ‘2’ and a near pin. Tom Byrne won a three-way
count back for third as he edged Paul Bray and C-B Thompsen.
Atop of B Flight, Jimmy Smiles 38 points was particularly
impressive given that it contained one 8 and five 6’s. Peter ‘Don Corleone’
Henshaw picked up the silver on 34 points leaving Shaun Cooke with 32 points
to close the flight.
Ed Wyckoff completed the ‘2’s share out.
Back at Lewiinski’s both Ian and Bob shared their good
fortune with a generous bell ring apiece.
Monday, August 20, Crystal
Bay B&C - Stableford
1st John Foote (20) 43pts
A relatively modest but brave group, attributed to the
worst ever ‘low season’ and the back-to-back playing days, took on the ever
challenging Crystal Bay B&C layouts.
Newly arrived Mr. and Mrs. Foote had very contrasting
games: John fired a blistering 42 points for man of the match and a visit to
the handicap committee while Lyn, suffering from jet lag I presume, found it
very hard.
No ‘2’s were recorded so it was a rollover on Wednesday.
Wednesday, August 22,
Bangpra - Stableford
A Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (15) 33pts
2nd Bob Newell (6) 33pts
B Flight
1st Ed Delaney (23) 35pts
2nd Geoff Kubas (22) 34pts
The Brits took full charge of the senior flight as three
players were tied on 33 points, so it was left to the dreaded count back to
determine the podium places. It was Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby who was perched
on the top spot, as ‘Broadmoor’ Bob, still eager for press coverage, gained
the silver. Barry ‘the bionic man’ got to watch the presentation from a bar
stool.
Not surprisingly the UK did so well, considering it was
Dr. DFBG Stableford, a doctor in the medical corps who devised the scoring
system in 1898 to keep down the frustration level in golf. He felt many
players practically in adverse weather conditions, “got very little fun
since they tore up their cards after a few holes.” His idea has certainly
stood the test of time, but it doesn’t seem to have cured the habit of
tearing up of score cards after a few holes.
B Flight provided the man of the match in Irishman Ed
Delaney with the day’s top score of 35 points. Eds score was one stroke
clear of the out of tune Geoff ‘Elvis’ Kubas.
Ian Halfpenny and Ed Wyckoff split the rollover ‘2’s pot.
Friday, August 24, Green
Valley - Stableford
A Flight
1st Rod Brown (18) 37pts
2nd Salvatore Brizzi (17) 33pts
B Flight
1st Joe Tynan (34) 38pts
2nd Peter Terry (19) 38pts
Friday and the week concluded with a return to what is
tantamount the society’s home course, Green Valley, to play a stableford
competition.
Thierry Temime threw a strong 38 points at the course and
B Flight competitors for the best score of the day. Joe ‘Sat nav’ Tynan
continues to amaze as he took second with a steady even par round.
A Flight went down to the wire as Barry ‘the boot’
Copestake and Colin ‘the donkey’ both carded 37 points but after the dust
had settled it was Barry who emerged from the count back on top, much to the
delight of the society regulars.
Mr. and Mrs. Bietry (one each), Ed Wyckoff and Gerry
Power shared the ‘2’s pot.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi
1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with
us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764.

Pilkington on pole at Phoenix
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pic/s14-Berts-%201.jpg)
Tuesday’s winners with 2
of Bert’s ‘finest’.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, August 21,
Phoenix – Stableford
This course is very close to Pattaya, and is in
effect just a short trip along Sukhumwit. Mind, the traffic can be a bit
daunting at times. With it being so close we can leave a bit later and
still get there in plenty of time. On this day that is exactly what we
did, and we even booked in and got to the start in plenty of time.
We were set to play the Ocean and Lakes nines - the
Ocean is probably most people’s favourite as it starts relatively
benignly, then tends to get harder. The wind was fairly strong today but
I thought the course was in really good condition: the fairways were
clean, the rough reasonable and the greens were running fast and true.
We do not play at this venue more often because,
despite what I said so far, there is always the input of the staff. We
have had some rings around with them in the past, however, maybe someone
has had a word with them, because this is the second time I played there
of late and they have been very good.
Round over I usually sit in the restaurant and have a
bite to eat, and a cold drink. This is where I collect the cards, and
usually the rest of the golfers sit down and have a bite and drink also
at most courses. The restaurant here though is not liked by not just our
golfers, but just about every group around. Sad really, as it is a good
facility. I think it is improving but we will see.
Back at Bert’s we announced the results. With the
number of players on the day we had one flight and this saw a runaway
winner when Frank Pilkington came in with 41 points. In second was Mike
Gaussa with 37 points, third came the scribe with 35 points, and in
fourth was Barry Oates with 34 points on count back over Mick Coghlan.
Near Pins went to Paul Sharples, Dave Arrowsmith,
Mike Gaussa and Neil Shaw.
![](pic/s14-Berts-2.jpg)
Thursday’s top three.
Friday, August 24,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
It would not be fair to say we went to Treasure Hill
because of the tremendous deal they have on at the moment. Not fair but
pretty true. We were due to go to Royal Lakeside but they informed us
they had a big tournament on they had forgotten about and we could not
tee-off until 1200 hrs. Not a good time to drive back from there, so
with the deal on we went to Treasure Hill - and what a good decision
that turned out to be!
Whilst a fair drive, these days it is not too bad,
despite having to pass a major accident on the 331, and very nasty it
was. Still, we arrived on time and the deal of green-fee/caddy and cart
for 990 Baht was to everyone’s delight. It is on incidentally until the
end of September. So it was onto the first tee and we were soon off.
Major work is taking place here and it will make a
currently difficult course into a real beast. However on the day the
course was a pleasure to play: fairways were in good condition and
greens were fast and true. We did however have a fairly strong wind that
seemed to come from every direction.
We were soon around and a quick shower saw us into
the restaurant. Maybe the course is in such good condition because all
the flags and banners were being put out for a major competition.
We were back to Bert’s at a reasonable time where we
announced the results. The winner with 34 points was Mike Gaussa ahead
of a count back on 33 points that saw Barry Oats in second and Dave
Arrowsmith in third. In fourth was Graham Buckingham with 32 points and
in fifth came Dick Warberg with 31 points.
Near Pins were claimed by Dave Arrowsmith, Alan
Sullivan, Mashi and Mike Gaussa.
Despite the course winning, the general feeling was
that this was a great day and Treasure Hill will definitely be having a
visit next month. T.T.F.N.

Robbins back in contention for monthly award
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
![](pic/s15-Bunker.jpg)
Tony Robbins (front left) and
friends.
Monday, August 20, Khao
Kheow B&C – Stableford
Travelling up the 7 motorway, we were anxiously watching
an ominous black cloud ahead of us in the general direction of Khao Kheow,
so the omens didn’t look good. However, we passed under the cloud with only
a few spots of rain, and on arrival at the course the sky was bright and
remained so for the rest of the day.
The brightest performer on the day was Tony Robbins,
although William Macey produced another of his “back-nine specials”, scoring
23 points and keeping Tony nervously looking over his shoulder. Tony’s
winning euphoria was dampened somewhat when he was unable to start his Volvo
after the game, and was forced to leave it in the car park overnight.
1st Tony Robbins (14) 38pts
2nd William Macey (19) 35pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 32pts
Near Pins: Geoff Parker, Gerry Cooney, Geoff
Williams and Peter Habgood.
Wednesday, August 22, The
Emerald – Stableford
A bright breezy day for our visit to the popular Bang
Chang course, but an unpleasant surprise greeted us when we discovered that
the course has sustained considerable damage due to water leakage on the
approaches to virtually all the greens. This unfortunate accident has at
least provided the opportunity for the greenkeeper to demonstrate his
artistic talent, marking out the GUR with white paint in impressionist
patterns. Picasso would be proud of some his designs, but most players were
scratching their heads trying to figure out possible drop areas away from
the mud.
The fairways also seem to be suffering with cabbage grass
taking over, in much the same way as it did several years ago, so all in all
the conditions were far from ideal.
The extra hazards proved too difficult for most of the
field, and only Colin Greig performed well on the day, winning by 5 clear
points, ahead of Raleigh Gosney.
1st Colin Greig (9) 37pts
2nd Raleigh Gosney (17) 32pts
3rd Geoff Parker (13) 31pts
Near Pins: Lee Butler, Colin Greig, and John
Graham.
Friday, August 24,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford
We arrived at Mountain Shadow to find the course quiet,
and the weather conditions good. Our leading group was a 3-ball and they
soon disappeared into the distance, eventually completing the round in under
3ฝ hours, and all players were back in the clubhouse in under 4 hours.
Colin Greig and Tony Robbins were having a nip and tuck
battle until Colin imploded on the par 5 eleventh hole, allowing Tony to
open up a lead which he was able to hold onto through the tricky closing
holes. Tony eventually finished on 41 points, which is a great score on this
course at any time. John Graham came in third place, beating the unlucky
Geoff Cox on a count back.
Just to show there were no hard feelings, Colin gave Tony
Robbins a lift into Chonburi after the round to collect the newly repaired
Volvo – the perils of buying an imported car!
1st Tony Robbins (14) 41pts
2nd Colin Greig (9) 37pts
3rd John Graham (10) 33pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig and John Graham (2).
The battle for the August ‘Golfer of the Month’ title has
developed once again into a very close race, with John Graham (winner in
July) now only one point behind the recently departed Geoff Williams, with
Gerry Cooney and Colin Greig in close attendance. Two wins during the week
have brought Tony Robbins also into contention, and provided his car doesn’t
break down again, another win would bring him right into the race, with
three games remaining.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society who now play out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd
Road, in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar. We
play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you
enjoy a fun day out and a friendly but competitive golf competition, why not
come and join us. We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and
transportation, and new players are always welcome.
Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for all enquiries. The
society is also in the process of resurrecting our website which you can
find at www.bunkersociety.com.

Jeff & Brian go hard at Greenwood
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
![](pic/s16-Mulligans.jpg)
Willem, Mam, Dave & Clive.
Tuesday, August 21,
Treasure Hill - Stableford
Tuesday we travelled north along Hwy 331 to Treasure Hill
where we were greeted with Sport Day rates, a good course and not too hot
weather with a light breeze - perfect conditions really for a great day of
golf!
This course is often maligned as a being a bit too
challenging for some, but it is currently in good condition and that is what
handicaps are for after all. Willem Lasonder (21) got away to a very good
start with 19 points on the front 9, but came home in an ambulance with only
12 on the back, to be run over by the fast finishing Jeff Wylie (5) with 35
points. Jeff was probably a bit lucky as Owen went back and played from the
Blacks today as a test for himself and shot a creditible 85. Off the Whites
he may well have edged Jeff.
Near Pins were shared between Jeff & Stan ‘the man’.
Thursday, August 23,
Greenwood - Stableford
On Thursday we drove past Treasure Hill on the way to
Greenwood, with B & A our combination for the day. This venue is nowhere
near as testing as TH, so there were a lot more good scores handed in on
this day.
We had approached the day with some trepidation after
reading some negative course reports, but I am pleased to say these appeared
to be unfounded, as all in attendance considered the course in good nick,
maybe a little on the dry side.
Jeff Wylie (5) & Brian Maddox (20), playing in the same
group, had a real battle on the back 9, after front 9s of 19 & 17
respectively. A 4-pointer on the last to Brian (his second of the day) saw
him record 21 points to Jeff’s 20, however he had given just a touch too
much start to Jeff.
Owen & Mam had returned 36 points, good enough to be in
the frame most days. It was good to see K & Mam return & Dave Arrowsmith
also, on a short holiday from UK.
Near Pins were shared around today between Dave, Mam,
Willem and the begging Clive.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf generally on Tuesday
& Thursday, with ML hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094
1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good
golfing!

Hot Hewitt
Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society
![](pic/s17-Phoenix.jpg)
Tuesday’s winners pose with
the staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Tuesday, August 21,
Phoenix - Stableford
The Mountain course has been closed now for a few weeks
to prepare it for the oncoming high season when all three courses will be in
use until next April. This meant that we played Ocean and then Lake course
on a scorching (possibly the hottest of the year) day.
Most players came in dehydrated and wilting due to the
heat. However the two main winners were players who had braved walking the
course, leaving the rest of the field way behind.
So, once again, Bill Hewitt prevailed as our winner today
but with only 34 points, whilst John Bartley came in a close second on 33
points. The next best were a host of players on 30 points. Who said Phoenix
is a pushover?
This was reiterated when only two of the four near pin
prizes were claimed. It has to said that some of this difficulty was due to
the tees being back and most of the greens having back placed flagsticks,
making the course its full yardage from the white tees.
The two near pins went to John Bartley and Joe Miller,
with the prizes for the other two going into the lucky draw. Winners of the
lucky draw prizes donated by The Relax Bar went to Jim Neilson, Fred May,
Arthur Busch & Bob Neylon.
Needless to say the rest of the night was spent on
replacing the lost fluids for the day and a merry time was had by all (as
far as I can remember).
Note: We play every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday at
Phoenix and always around the 11.30 am time. At present, Tuesday green fees
for guests are 800 baht plus caddy and Friday is 900 baht plus caddy. When
the high season starts (about October/November time) the green fees for
guests of the members will be 1.000 Baht plus caddy, on all mid-week days.
If anyone is interested in joining our little group then
give me (Mike) a call on 087 091 7565. Just remember we have a few basic
rules for joining of which the main two are an official handicap of no more
than 28, and we do not allow lady players in our group. However they are
very welcome to attend the social gathering after if they so desire.
We also run regular sea fishing trips and the next one is
on 8th September with a few places still available on the boat.

Lions Club golf challenge raises over 500,000 baht for charity

President Lions Club Pattaya, left, and Sithichai Sirisuthiworanant,

Warunya Thongrod
Over 130 golfers from all over the country participated
in a charity golf competition organized by the Lions Club Pattaya and held
at the beautiful Siam Country Club on Monday, August 20.
The purpose of the tournament was to raise funds for
disadvantaged children and other charitable activities carried out by the
club. These include setting up scholarships for poor schoolchildren and
providing sponsorship for the Thai Enclycopedia at Chonburi learning
establishment. Funds will also go to help victims of natural disasters who
for whatever reason are unable to receive aid from the government.
Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh was in attendance
at the end of the day’s play to present trophies to the champion golfers.
The large field of players was split into several categories including
female and senior flights.
The best score of the day came in at nine-under par from
Suphasith Kaesorn who returned a fabulous net 63 to take the honors and
receive the HRH Princess Sirindhorn’s Cup. Runner-up on the day was
Ratchapol Thummapiyachai with a fine 5-under par total.
Following the competition, a party was held that included
the auctioning of paintings by two famous Thai artists, Naris Phetcharat,
former governor of 310 C Region, and Jaran Kanokkanchana, former president
of Region 7. The money raised by the auction, together with the tournament
entrance fees, meant that a grand total of over 500,000 baht was collected
for worthy causes.
Burin Chanrakkankha, Club President of the Lions Club
Pattaya, paid tribute to all who had given their time and money to make the
event such a success and hoped that all would return for the 22nd
edition of the tournament next year.

Stuvik maintains 10th place
after RedBull Ring races
![](pic/s19-Stuvik.jpg)
Sandy Stuvik in action at the
RedBull Ring in Austria, Sunday, August 26.
Thai racing driver Sandy Stuvik impressed during early
practice at Austria’s RedBull Ring last weekend, setting the fastest time of
all 34 Formula Renault 2.0 cars in the second session. In the third and
final session he led for most of the session, before eventually setting the
third fastest time.
In the Saturday afternoon qualification rounds he managed
6th place in the first, later converted to 9th due to a yellow flag
infringement and 11th in the second session after catching slow traffic on
his fastest lap. Still, the Austrian race commentators were quite impressed
with having a Thai driver performing at this level.
The Austrian summer, with blue skies and well over 30
degree temperatures, came to an end abruptly for Sunday mornings first race
and the ensuing cold and heavy rain affected the set up and confidence of
the Thai driver.
The first race was started under the safety car due to
the large amounts of water on the track and with numerous accidents up and
down the field, Stuvik opted to play it safe and ended the race in a point
scoring 14th place.
The second race again started on a wet circuit and Sandy
was distressed not to have a chance to show his impressive dry circuit set
up speed, but again he drove a sensible race and finished where he started
in 11th place.
The results enabled the Thai driver to reach 100 points
for the season and maintain his 10th place in the Formula Renault 2.0
Northern European Championship. The next race will follow this weekend,
September 1-2, at Autodrom Most in the Czech Republic.
Sandy Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association
of Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon
Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Scribe is surprise winner at Greenwood
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
The TRGG are moving again shortly from their current base
at the Bowling Green in Soi Xzyte and will take up residence at the Ned
Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee, which is a continuation of Soi Diana running from
Soi Buakhaow up to Third Road for those trying to find it.
Although only a few months have passed since our move
from the Travellers Rest Hotel to the Bowling Green, it now appears the
whole area around the Bowling Green is up for redevelopment, forcing us to
move again. The exact date for the move is still not known but will probably
take place by the second week of September. I shall be updating everybody in
the next couple of weeks so please watch this space. At least all the
golfing bandits coming to Pattaya should feel right at home at the Ned Kelly
Bar!
On Monday 20th August the TRGG visited one of the
favourite courses amongst our members but if the scores were anything to go
by everybody must have been suffering from monumental hangovers from the
night before. Roger Wilkinson (h/cap 13) took first place with just 29pts,
winning on count back from John Dennis (28) in second and our bionic
marathon runner Richard Talbot (18) came in third with 28pts.
On Tuesday 21st August it was Greenwood’s turn on the
agenda and a miracle of epic proportions occurred; yours truly, yes Andrew
Rich, won a golf competition! Most people’s memory is not long enough to
remember back to when I won my last one but I believe Tiger Woods was still
in short trousers at the time. Suffice it to say I was staggered and I
sincerely hope I do not have to wait as long to win my next one.
Playing off a twenty one handicap (to think I used to be
13) I shot 38pts, which proved good enough to finish just ahead of two
players both on 37pts - Curtis Andrew (18) took second place on count back
from Richard Talbot (19).
Thursday 23rd August was Phoenix day as usual and this
week TRGG played the Lake and Ocean courses. Regular winner Seil Revels (4)
again took the honours with 39pts closely followed by Tim Dalton (18) on
38pts and Richard Talbot (18) taking third place for the third time this
week with 37pts.
The matchplay competition, which has been running for the
last three weeks at Phoenix alongside the stableford competition, finally
reached a climax and I am given to understand that the organizer John Dean
prevailed in the final by 3 and 2, so congratulations John.
On Saturday 25th August it was again the turn of Crystal
Bay (A and B courses) to play host to TRGG and it was the Australian
contingent who took all the prizes, obviously relatives of Ned Kelly.
Returning to the shores of Thailand, Derek Thorogood (17)
and Billy Allen (15) hardly had time to unpack before walking off with the
prize money. Derek and Billy both shot 37pts with Derek winning on count
back. David Arrowsmith (9) came in third with 33pts.

Roar’s name changed – but same result
Jomtien golf with the IPGC
![](pic/s21-Jomtien.jpg)
Curtiss Hessler, Chris Voller
and Mike Pledger.
Monday, August 20, The
Emerald – Stableford
The popularity of this course within our group has
diminished over the past few weeks with the poor and non-improving
conditions and there were still a few moans after today’s round regarding
the fairways and greens, so something to think about regarding our next
visit here.
This reflected in the numbers today and there were only
five 4-balls out with the cut at 8-17 in division 1 and 20+ in division 2.
The man not known as Roar Berger any more but Roar
‘Burglar’, won division 2 with 37 points, this despite having been cut 4
shots following his 48 points last month. His score today beat Sid Ottaway
into second place, with Sid edging Rod Howett on an 18/16 back nine count
back as they both came in with 33 points.
Mike Pledger, playing off 16, won division 1 with 37
points while six points behind was Chris Voller in second after beating
Curtiss Hessler on a 16/11 back nine count back.
Rodney Howett birdied the downhill 15th from around 10ft
for the only ‘2’ in division 2 while in division 1 a rollover ensued to
Bangpra on Wednesday.
Near Pins went to Steve Armstrong (2), Wilf Latham, Mike
Pledger and Sid Ottaway (2).
Wednesday, August 22,
Bangpra – Stableford
A favourite course with many and our last game here
before the October tee time gets changed to 11.42 a.m., which precludes us
from playing. We will be back in May when the Korean tourist golfers have
gone home.
The Sheffield boy, now playing off 7, won division 1 with
34 points, no nicknames are printable for the next player in and with 31
points, Bryan Rought beat Daniel Willets on a 19/17 back nine count back.
In division 2 Willy Van Heetveld took the top podium
position with 35 points, Alan Bissell was second two points behind and the
Welsh boy David Phillips beat Yorkshire farmer Geoff Stubbs on a 17/13 back
nine count back after they both scored 29 points.
Near Pins were shared by Andy Mills, Chris Voller, Burnie
Sinclair, Geoff Stubbs and Willy van Heetvelde.
Harry Vincenzi hits a rescue iron into the green of tough
par-4 16th and an unbelievably it dropped into the hole for an eagle and
sole possession of the ‘2’s pot for Harry.
Friday, August 24, Eastern
Star - Stableford
Planning the next day’s line-up at Siam cats on the
Thursday evening there were nine groups penciled in so for the first time in
a couple of months, so there would be three divisions out for the men. Later
that evening however there were two cancellations and a no-show on the first
tee the next morning, which left 31 players split into two divisions.
There was a very low cut in division 1 with 15 playing
off 5-14 and division 2 saw 16 players off 15+. The best score of the day
came from Marty Rock with 36 points, who won the premier division playing
off 11 and after beating Wilf Latham on a 20/15 back nine count back. Mike
Missler meanwhile took third one point behind.
The ‘Mrs’ was not playing today and this put Darryl Blair
into the winners’ enclosure in division 2. Darryl beat Joe Kubon on a 20/15
back nine count back after they both came in with 35 points. After a few
more weeks in the doldrums the organiser bounced back today and came in
third with 34 points.
It was strange round weather wise with some intense heat
on most of the holes but as soon as you walked down towards the coast a
gentle breeze was blowing into your face.
Near Pins went to Bill Bertram, Brian Libbey, Wilf
Latham, Daniel Willetts, Glyn Evans, Sid Ottaway and Willy Van Heetvelde.
John Lay birdied the 13th and Wilf the 3rd to share the
‘2’s purse in division 1 while in division 2 there are now 7 rollovers to
next Friday here.
Our next extravaganza fun day - a 1-2-3 competition here
at Eastern Star - has been brought forward now to the 14th September.
If the ladies tipple was still running in the low season
a certain person would have won it overwhelmingly, after being dropped off
down the road after Friday’s game and couldn’t find the mini bus to get back
to Jomtien and had to hire a taxi. Well done Steve A!
Today there was also a warm welcome back to Josie and
Cully Monks.

Surprise winner at Emerald
The Backyard Golf Society
![](pic/s22-Backyard.jpg)
Martyn celebrates his win with
the staff from the Blue Sky Bar.
Another Friday and another round of golf with the
Backyard Golf Society at Emerald Golf Course this past August 24.
On arrival at the course it was good to see no one
waiting at the tee, which always seems to point to a round of golf with no
hold ups. Seven players today with everyone in all competitions and we were
good to go at just after 9 AM.
As mentioned before, the fairways are not in the best of
condition but the greens are getting better and with only a few spots of
rain everyone finished in good time to get into the club house for prize
giving.
Martyn won the stableford competition with 32 points,
just beating JJ by one. With all the rollovers from previous weeks, Terry C
had a nice little tickle by winning nearest the pin and JJ took the rollover
skins plus (6) more. Other skin winners were as follows: Terry C (4), Martyn
(4), Bob G (2) and finally Dan M (2).
All finished and it was down the road for a few cold ones
and help Martyn celebrate only his second win since the start of the
society.

Rich pickings at Crystal Bay
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
Crystal Bay was in fine fettle on Monday,
20th August when the Pattaya Golf Society called to play a stableford
competition on the B and C nines. Two other Pattaya golf groups were also
there but surely they could not manage to better the full field average
score of the PGS, which stood at its highest ever, 33 points.

Winning duo, Wichai Tananusorn
and Mr Len receive the perennial birthday trophy.
Everything was in place for good golf, well grassed
fairways, well tended bunkers and very consistent greens which actually made
putting fun.
In third place was the ubiquitous Dave Edwards, again
venturing below par with 37 points but he found himself edged out this time
by the Aussie pair of Alan Walker and Garry Hookey who recorded 38 points
each. For Garry it was a fine way to draw the curtains on his current trip.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Boss’s free beer draw
was won by Robbie Taylor whilst Ian Wilson picked up the Booby Bevy after a
round which had been hampered by a painful knee condition, giving him the
day’s lowest score.
Crystal Bay had provided the perfect opener for the week
with the Pattaya Golf Society.
Birthday Fun!
On Wednesday, 22nd August, the Pattaya Golf Society
visited Emerald to play a pairs scramble (stableford) event to celebrate the
birthday of Mr Len, the group’s golf “geezer”. Following a memorable event
last year at Pleasant Valley the teams gathered at Emerald for an equally
enjoyable day. The format allowed for stableford play and the secret of
success was in pairing low and high handicappers together.
In addition to the very generous sponsorship of technical
prizes by the members, the proceeds of the day were targetted for the
group’s adopted charity, The Fr. Ray Foundation Outreach Center on Soi
Thepprasit.
The course played very well and a tight contest ensued
with only three points covering the top five teams. In third place was the
duo of Seil Revels and Leigh Abbey and a fine birdie chip-in on the last by
Seil boosted their score to 44 points. One point ahead was the pairing of
Pete Seward and Johnny Larsson with 45 points. Waiting to play their
approach to the last green they had the dubious pleasure of watching a
magnificent chip-in birdie ahead by Wichai Tananusorn which gave him and
playing partner Mr Len the narrowest of victories on 46 points. After a very
fine second place last year this was always the pair to beat but they had to
work hard to put together an excellent back nine of 35 shots after misfiring
on the front nine.
Technical prizes were very kindly sponsored by PGS
friends Mr Len, Rabbi, Garry Hookey, Kerry Jonsson, Masashi Iizumi, John
Mason, Dave Edwards and Seil Revels. The presentation party saw the winners
receive the perennial trophy in the form of an engraved putter and the
“birthday boy” rang the bell to acknowledge the generosity and support of
the members which had seen 6K raised for the group’s charity.
All in all it was a splendid way to celebrate the golf
geezers’ big day. Here’s to the next one!

![](pic/s24-Chairman-1.jpg)
Prizes winners accept their
trophies from Pravit Rossawatsuk, Asst. GM of Eastern Star Country Club &
Resort, standing 2nd left.
A large field of 118 golfers assembled at Eastern Star
Country Club & Resort on the morning of Saturday, August 18 to take part in
this month’s third qualifying leg of the 2012 Chairman’s Cup. The
tournament, now in its ninth year, consists of 5 qualifying rounds held at
monthly intervals up until October, when the final playoff round will be
held and which offers up some great prizes for the winners, including a top
prize of a golfing trip to Cambodia.
The Eastern Star course is rapidly improving following
recent work by the greenkeepers and was presented in fine condition for this
August event; with nicely grassed fairways and extremely slick greens that
made putting a game not for those with a nervous disposition. The players
were also blessed today with a steady, cooling breeze which took the edge
off the baking afternoon heat.
A large turnout by the expat golfing fraternity to join
the local Thai golfers proved that the format of this competition in
increasing in popularity and offers a great day out at a very reasonable
cost.
The large field was split into five separate divisions
with the handicap splits coming at 0-8, 9-12, 13-16, 17-20 & 21-24. Scoring
was calculated using the 36 system with a maximum handicap allowance of 24.
As well as the divisional awards there were also prizes to be contested for
near pins, plus long and straight drives.

defeating Satien Pathumsri on count back after they both came in with 16
points each, while Surasak Charoenrat took third just one point adrift.
Scores got progressively worse for the higher handicap
golfers as the fast greens took their toll. In the D Flight, top spot went
to Paisan Klaiwong (17) on 12 points to finish well clear of Somboon and
Viroj, who placed second and third respectively.
Finally, in E Flight, the winner was Kiatpong with a net

United search for goals as
Chonburi hold league leaders
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season

Pattaya United fought to a
goalless draw against Wuachon United in Songkhla, southern Thailand last
Sunday, August 26. (Photo/Pattaya United FC)
While Pattaya United were battling to a
goalless draw away at Wuachon last Sunday evening, the real drama was taking
place back on the Eastern Seaboard as league leaders Muang Thong United had
to come from behind twice to salvage a point against second placed Chonburi
FC at the Chonburi Stadium.
Pattaya’s profligacy in front of goal came back to haunt
them once more as they were unable to pierce the tough Wuachon back line in
Songkhla. United have now slipped perilously close to the relegation
dog-fight with the ‘Dolphins’ just 3 points above the drop zone.
Pattaya are on the road again this weekend with an away
fixture against Thai Port FC in Bangkok on Saturday night and with their
opponents just one place below them in the league, it’s a game United cannot
afford to lose.
At the other end of the table the Chonburi ‘Sharks’ came
out all guns blazing last Sunday against the league leaders and took the
lead on the half hour mark through Noppanan Kachaplayut, who pounced on a
mistake by Muang Thong keeper Kitpongsri.
The ‘Kirins’ had to wait until early in the second half
to grab an equalizer from Adnan Barakat before Pipob On-mo headed the home
team ahead once more with just 20 minutes to go. Much to the consternation
of their fans however, the ‘Sharks’ were unable to hold out until the end as
Teerasil broke clear in the 77th
minute to lob the ball over the Chonburi keeper and keep his team 10 points
clear at the top of the league standings.
