Jeff Cordiero and Paul Taylor take the medals
IPGC golf from The Haven
Monday, August 20, Bangpra - Stableford
CSS 72
1st David Lowe (6) 34pts
2nd John Wood (23) 32pts
3rd Barry Winton (5) 30pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 29pts
5th Mike Dabanovich (11) 28pts
As always the Bangpra course proved to be a stern test with the greens as
ever extremely difficult when the player is faced with a putt from anywhere
level or above the hole.
Paul
Taylor.
David Lowe took his first win out of The Haven with a solid round that
contained just two three pointers but no blank holes which was good enough
by two to win the day.
John wood took advantage of an outstanding last eight holes that saw him
amass all of his eighteen points for the nine to claim his highest placing
on this trip, ahead of Barry Winton in third place as the latter could not
manage to keep any consistency in his game for a change.
Shuichi Kodak struggled along with all the day’s contenders but did just
enough to take fourth place to push Mike Dabanovich down to fifth as the
latter had an up and down day that included five three-pointers, five
one-pointers and four blank holes.
In keeping with the difficulty of the course on the day there were no 2’s in
either division.
Back at The Haven there was a farewell for H.E. Patrick Scullion returning
to the grindstone in Cyprus.
Wednesday, August 22, Khao Kheow B & C - Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Shuichi Kodaka (16) 33pts
2nd Don Everett (21) 31pts
3rd Al Rolnik (18) 30pts
4th David Lowe (6) 28pts
5th Seppo Sadeharju (23) 28pts
6th Rodney Hayes (14) 28pts
Another very tough day for all the players with the CSS for the day going
out three shots as the day became not counting for upward review of
handicaps.
Don
Everett.
Shuichi Kodaka performed the best, almost making the mark but blowing the
tricky par three seventeenth, but he still hung on to win by two from Don
Everett, who had started very slowly with just three points from the first
four holes but then steadied the round by scoring ten points from the last
three of the front nine and would have won with a better finish to the back
nine.
Al Rolnik, making his last appearance for a few weeks, slipped onto the
podium in third spot with a round that owed much to application, as David
Lowe won a multiple count back over Seppo Sadeharju and Rodney Hayes with a
better 13 to 12 over the last nine with Seppo taking fifth place with a
better 10 to 7 over the last six.
There were no 2’s in the first division but Don Everett cleaned out the
second division pool including the rollovers.
Prior to the presentations there was a welcome back to Toshihiro Aoki and a
farewell for Al Rolnik, who is returning to the USA for a few weeks.
Friday, August 24, Greenwood B & C - Stableford
CSS 72
1st Shuichi Kodaka (16) 35pts
2nd Toshihiro Aoki (27) 31pts
3rd Don Everett (21) 30pts
4th Konrad Klama (25) 28pts
5th Phil Stevenson (22) 27pts
At last the week produced a resemblance to par golf, but still not quite, as
Shuichi Kodaka continued with his steady form to win easily from Toshihiro
Aoki by four shots, having started extremely well at two under but slipped
badly over the last three scoring just three points.
Shuichi
Kodaka.
Don Everett took third just a shot adrift and two ahead of Konrad Klama, who
made it onto the podium for the first time in fourth.
Phil Stevenson, having struggled all week, finally made a slight impact by
taking fifth place.
Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Toshihiro Aoki
slipped one in from the edge to take the second division.
Before the presentations were made there were welcome backs for Konrad Klama
unfortunately this time without Mike Sanders who is still recovering in
Switzerland from a prolonged illness but is hoping to be back with the boys
in Pattaya very soon.
Monday, August 27, Pattana B & C - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Don Everett (21) 37pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 34pts
3rd Phil Stevenson (22) 32pts
4th Toshihiro Aoki (27) 32pts
5th Terry Hodgkiss (22) 29pts
Following a very difficult time a brighter week was in prospect as the group
took on the B and C layouts at Pattana where the condition of the courses
was found to be tip top.
Don Everett, having struggled to get near to his handicap in the previous
week, put in a solid performance to take his first win of the week by three
clear from the ever present Shuichi Kodaka as once again he slipped badly
over the back nine scoring just 14 points.
Phil Stevenson did enough to take third place, while helping his playing
partner win their four-ball match for the first time this trip, by winning
the count back over Toshihiro Aoki having a better 16 to 13 while Terry
Hodgkiss slipped into fifth another three shots further back.
There were no 2’s in either division.
Wednesday, August 9, The Emerald - Stableford
CSS 71
1st Don Everett (22) 38pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (16) 37pts
3rd Phil Stevenson (22) 33pts
4th Seppo Sadeharju (23) 29pts
5th Konrad Klama (25) 28pts
As the week progressed the scores were getting better all round as Don
Everett took his second win of the week, sparking interest as to whether he
could prevail in the Medal on Friday to be only the third player to win
three in a week out of The Haven.
Once again Shuichi Kodak was to be found on the podium, this time in second
spot, with yet another round that could have been better as he finished with
25 points from the last nine holes but had unfortunately started out with a
nine that included three 3-pointers and four blank holes.
Phil Stevenson, who had just started to run into form as his holiday runs
out, took third place with Seppo Sadeharju in fourth and Konrad Klama in
fifth place.
In the 2’s there were no contenders in the first division but Shuichi Kodaka
made up for the disappointment of not winning by taking the second division
with the sole one of the day.
Friday, August 31, Phoenix (Lakes & Ocean) - Monthly
Medals
Division 1 (Blue tees)
CSS 74
1st Jeff Cordiero (9) net 71
2nd Brian Libbey (10) net 72
3rd Siel Revels (5) net 76
Division 2 (White tees)
CSS 72
1st Paul Taylor (20) net 67
2nd Stephen Beard (22) net 72
3rd Konrad Klama (25) net 75
Jeff Cordiero played exceptionally well to take the August first division
Medal with a three under the CSS for the day round that included a two and a
back nine of three over gross, which was just sufficient to consign Brian
Libbey into second place and deny him a second Medal in the current year’s
series, having won his first in March with a score that was three shots
worse than this time out as he finished with an uncharacteristic double
bogey seven.
Seil Revels took third place with a round that did not include a six on the
card.
In the second division Paul Taylor took his second Medal of the year and his
second in succession, with an outstanding round that was his best return for
over two years, as he has struggled to get back to fitness following a
serious shoulder injury. His day’s return was seven better than his previous
winning score over the same course.
Paul’s great round also ensured that Stephen Beard did not win his second
Medal of the year as he returned a level handicap round and had to settle
for second place ahead of a three-way count back for third that was won by
Don Everett with a better 25.7 on the last six over Seppo Sadeharju with
26.4 and Konrad Klama with 27.7 after they had tied the back nine on 39.5 a
piece.
At last the first division 2’s pool was taken with David Lowe and Jeff
Cordiero getting one each while the second division was taken by Paul Taylor
to add a silver lining to his brilliant day.
Before the presentations there was welcome back for Lyle Blaw and also a
farewell for Toshihro Aoki after a short but successful stay.
Note: If you would like to play with The Haven group, you can contact
mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to The Haven Hotel, at 185 Soi 13, between

on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday on the days you wish to play. A schedule of

Ciano chips in for glory
PSC Blue Moose Golf Society
![](pictures/s10-Blue-1.jpg)
Bill Thompson, left, with
Ciano Glavina, center, and Gay on the right.
Monday, August 27, Pattaya C.C. –
Stableford
Three groups of Moose golfers made their way to Pattaya Country Club on this
overcast Monday. Fortunately the rain held off and the round was played
without intervention.
Richard Hall brought along his son, Anthony, visiting from the UK, while Joe
and Billy joined the 3 ladies in a 5-ball. Due to Jan oversleeping the group
did not tee off until 8:00 a.m. Gay had new clubs to use because of scoring
well the week before. No comments on the results.
Dale Murphy scored a new high of 43 points to come in first followed by
Larry with 37 points.
Oiy had a birdie on the par 3 fifth with a 3 foot putt. She left a 4-footer
three inches short on the same hole the second time around and had to settle
for a par. Her score of 35 stableford points was good for third place.
Billy usually scores well on his first round of golf but not this week. The
par 5 third hole took its toll on his score card with double bogeys each
time he played it.
Wednesday, August 29, Green Valley - Stableford
The Blue Moose monthly trophy was up for grabs this Wednesday and
the Moose golfers arrived at Green Valley with high expectations. Weather
was great and the course was in good shape.
More discussions were had on the logic of the hole sequence – everyone was
glad to not be walking.
Dale Murphy, the odds on favorite to win after posting several recent 40
point scores, had a letdown and came in with only 30 points. However, he did
win the near pin. The winner with 35 points was Ciano Glavina who had a
birdie, chipping into the hole from 50 yards. His score came under question
since the last nine holes he had played at Emerald only produced 2 points.
This was his first trophy win with the Blue Moose Golf.
Coming in second was Blue Moose owner Billy Thompson with 34 points who
started slow before recovering with 8 pars in a row. Matt Millar came in
third with 32 points.
Gay Wilanan, the Blue Moose Manager, presented the trophy to Ciano while
Billy is still asking how? In the background Herbie was presenting his usual
excellent spread for the remaining golfers.

The Highway to pleasant golf
PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside
Tuesday, August 28, Pleasant Valley -
Stableford
Tuesday was our long awaited return to Pleasant Valley. While some groups
have sworn off this course, we continue to visit because it is popular
amongst our group. The condition of the course at the moment is good, with
well grassed fairways & the greens running smooth.
![](pictures/s11-Mulligans.jpg)
Frans Olgers.
Owen Walkley (10) who has been showing some good form
lately, continued his winning ways with a strong 39 points. The consistent
Jeff Wylie (5) played solidly to record 37 points, after getting off to a
rocky start.
Near pins went to Phill and Frans, the latter who had two and converted one
for a nice birdie on hole #5.
Thursday, August 30, Khao Kheow - Stableford
Thursday saw us repeat our Tuesday’s trek along Hwy 7, turning
off to Khao Kheow, with the A & C combination our test for the day. The
course was in reasonable condition, despite there being several areas marked
GUR, as course management tries to alleviate some drainage issues. The
greens were running true and smooth, though not quite as speedy as they can
be on occasions.
Jeff Wylie (5) played a bit up and down today, but still recorded 35 points,
to lead the way from the unlucky Jonathan Pratt (17), who eventually
finished with 34 points, although it could have easily been several more.
Near pins went to Frans, Phill & Jeff with 2.
Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday, with ML
hosting prompt presentations on both days. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling
or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

McDonald stamps his mark on Green Valley
PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar
Monday, August 27, Burapha - Stableford
With most of the regular Outbackers and friends way in Hua Hin,
there was just a handful of players (7) on the A & B course at Burapha
today, and no regretfully, no report.
There were no ‘2’s.
1st Tom Gingerich (16) 35pts
2nd Bob Lindborg (20) 34pts
3rd John Cunningham (6) 33pts
Tuesday, August 28, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford
It was the same story today at Pattaya Country Club as with
Burapha on Monday, with a field of nine playing, which included four ladies.
Ian Heddle put a fine round together to score 39pts playing off 5, followed
home by the day’s organiser, Dennis Persson on 38.
Ian Heddle had the only ‘2’ on the 7th hole.
1st Ian Heddle (5) 39pts
2nd Dennis Persson (20) 38pts
3rd Nigel Cannon (22) 37pts
Friday, August 31, Green Valley – Stableford
Our thanks to Joe Mooneyham who ran today’s competition at Green
Valley for a relatively small field of 14.
Mark McDonald put a great round together, with an outward nine of 37 and a
inward nine of 33, to score a gross 70, worth 41pts playing off a handicap
of 3. Jack Butler was second with 36 with Pat Regan in third on 35.
There were two ‘2’s from Mark McDonald & Pat Regan.
1st Mark McDonald (3) 41pts
2nd Jack Butler (9) 36pts
3rd Pat Regan (13) 35pts
Note: The Outback Golf Bar is situated about 6km from Sukhumvit Road
along Soi Siam Country. All are welcome to come and join us for a beer and a
hit. Just call in and put your name down on the list or call Jack on 087 941

Pierre ‘just like that’ Bietry
PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society
Sunday, August 26, Green Valley -
Stableford
1st Pierre Bietry (13) 43pts
2nd Mick Beresford (17) 40pts
3rd Bob Newell (5) 38pts
The performances on customer friendly Green Valley foretold it was to be a
week of outstanding efforts. Perhaps it was due to the excellent condition
that the course finds itself in at the moment, or perhaps it is a winnowing
of the competitors down to the battle hardened residents.
In any event, one didn’t have to look far for the man of the match as Pierre
‘the magician’ Bietry left the field spellbound with his magical 43 points
(let’s see what trick Pierre has up his sleeve for the handicap sectary).
No one deserved to be more disappointed more than Mickey ‘nine holes’
Beresford who saw his stellar 40 points only good for second place. ‘Broad
more’ Bob tidied up the flight eventually with a solid 38 points.
Bob was in overdrive as he stood on the seventeenth tee level to par off the
stick, the wind blowing through his hair, one more good drive and surely the
game was his. Sadly the wheels came of big time, a no scoring hole was
followed by a single point on the last, and the rest as they say is history.
More treatment required!
Dave Shelton and ‘the Donkey’ split the 2’s pot
Monday, August 27, Bangpakong - Stableford
1st Michael Prideaux (11) 39pts
2nd Colin Davis 37pts
A tidy yet passionate group due in part to some of the society hardcore
members off on tour to Hua Hin with our friend’s from the Outback golf
society, and to our back-to-back playing days, traveled up the No 7 highway
to tackle the tough Bangpakong Riverside.
The ‘Donkey’ had to be happy with his 37 points, that is until all the lads
came in and reveled that Michael Prideaux had a very commendable 39 points
that gave him the top score of the day.
Michael also carded a 2 along with Aussie Paul Hack as they split the 2’s
pot
Wednesday, August 29, Burapha - Stableford
1st Thierry Petrement (10) 39pts
2nd Steve Landholm (13) 36pts
Today’s venue was the well maintained Burapha, with the usual coupling of
A+B or American Wood and British Link. Whatever the condition, whatever the
nines, it seemed to agree with Thierry Petrement returning back to the
society after a short holiday back home and carrying on where he left off,
as his 39 points was the best of the day.
Thierry was three strokes clear of Steve Landholm and Sunday’s top man
Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry. Pierre’s tricks did not impress Steve however
as he took the second place in the resulting count back.
Claude Harder, John Harney and the Aussie 2’s specialist Paul Hack shared
the 2’s pot
Friday, August 31, Mountain Shadow - Stableford
1st Ed Wyckoff (9) 35pts
2nd Paul Hack (12) 34pts
It is not unusual that the field was challenged by Mountain Shadow and that
no one matched their handicap. While the course measures an unthreatening
6276 yards, it is tree-lined to an extent unique on the Eastern Seaboard,
sports a quartet of devilish par fives and is generally considered the most
difficult par 72 layout in the area.
Tenacity and perseverance can count for a lot on a course like this and
those were the attributes displayed by Ed ‘our man in the White House’
Wyckoff as he bested the field with 35 points. Aussie Paul Hack, continuing
to impress, came second and gave notice that he is ready to do some damage.
Dave Shelton slotted home the only 2 of the day.
Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi
13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and
add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is
provided.

Back in the old routine
The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society played its one hundredth
competition of the year on Monday, 27th August when the group visited
Phoenix to play its monthly medal round on the Ocean and Lakes nines. The
course is currently in excellent condition and an empty track made for fine
progress.
After nine holes it became clear that two of the field were continuing their
good form from the previous event and for one of them, Mr Len, it was his
best nine hole total in years. Inevitably the gremlins got into his drive
and he was held back in his charge.
Finishing in third place was a consistent Alan Walker with a steady net 74
and in second was Wichai Tananusorn who is slowly recovering his form after
his annual visit to UK. The touch is back and his net 71 was a fine effort
on the day. The winner, on net 69, was Mr Len despite losing five shots to
his handicap on the final three holes.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the free beer draw went to Bobby Shirkey, who
was pipped to the Booby Bevy by Peter Allen after a mediocre debut round on
the course.
It had been a good golf day at Phoenix for the Pattaya Golf Society.
Triple triumph at St Andrew’s
The Pattaya Golf Society made a rare trip to the Green Valley complex to
play a stableford competition on the St Andrew’s course on Wednesday, 29th
August. The course was wonderfully turned out with well grassed fairways and
excellent greens.
As always the course demands accuracy and good management skills and those
able to apply both found themselves in the frame. Unsurprisingly it was the
lower handicappers who filled all the places with Mikael Andersson and
Robbie Taylor sharing top place with 34 points, but Booby Shirkey and Johnny
Larsson made good fists of it for the rest of the field with their 32 point
returns.
There were no birdie ‘2’s, perhaps because of some tough pin locations on
the par threes, seventeen especially being at the base of the slope which
adds notoriety to the green.
The Booby went deservedly to the organiser whose promising front nine became
no more than a memory after the turn when his legendary “power fade”
contrived to go “awol” and dispatched him thrice into OB. Another little job
for his hammer ... when he has time!
Purdie returns with victory
The Pattaya Golf Society ended August with a first visit of the year to
Silky Oak, to play a stableford competition. The course is in fine condition
but the greens are slow and a little bobbly, indicating the total under-use
of the course. Why close the tees for a few hours every day from 9:30, when
there’s revenue out there to be had? However, that didn’t stop a Thai group
teeing off at 10:40, in full sight of the PGS group, forced to tee off an
hour earlier.
The golf was good, indicated by an average return of 33 points, with Joe
Niisato and Mr Len both going one better on 34 points for a share of second
place, just one ahead of Wichai Tananusorn. The winner was Andrew Purdie,
very recently returned from Australia, with 37 very competent points.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Brian Shaw received the Booby Bevy for the low
return of the day.
Silky Oak does not please everybody, opinions vary from “too contrived” to
“too easy”, but at the end of the day successful golfers still have to
manage the course, make the right shots, and nail the putts. Ask Andrew
Purdie.

Sharples stays sharp
Phoenix Members G.O.L.F. Society
![](pictures/s14-Phoenix.jpg)
Tuesday winners pose with the
staff at The Relax Bar.
Mike Gerrard
Once again the weather was perfect for today’s game, Tuesday, August 28,
with clear blue sky with wispy clouds and a cool breeze. Just like we
remember back in the ‘old country’ (well, maybe once a year!)
With the Mountain course still undergoing final preparation for the upcoming
high season we tackled the Lake and Ocean course (my favourite two). That
first hole on Mountain is getting a bit tough for us old codgers these days.
In saying that the whole course was too tough for me today, so I just
enjoyed driving round on the cart watching Paul Sharples demolish the course
with a superb Gross 78, which after deducting his handicap of 11 left him
with a net 67 to claim the first prize along with the prestigious Trattoria
Italiana voucher.
In second place was Eamon Murtagh with a fine net 70 (this is normally good
enough to win) and in third place was Richard Baldwin with a net 72, having
the best back nine out of four on the same score.
Near pins were claimed by Paul Sharples, Eamon Murtagh, Graham Tebb while
the lucky draw prizes (donated by our hosts The Relax Bar) went to Peter
Harris, John (I never win the lucky draw) Bartley, Patrick Browne & Bob
Neylon.
Anyone interested in joining in with our group should give me (Mike) a call
on 087 091 7565. All you need to enjoy the lushness of the fairways at
Phoenix at a reasonable price is an official handicap of no more than 28 and
be of the Male gender.
Our next sea fishing trips are scheduled for 15th and 29th September. There
are still a few places available, for a great day out on the ocean.

Keith conquers all on Hua Hin road-trip
Outback Golf Bar 2nd Syd LeBron Memorial Putter
Monday, August 27, Day 1 -
Sea Pine
![](pictures/s16-Outback-1.jpg)
Winner Keith Allen, centre,
flanked by runners-up
Barry McIntosh, left, and Dave Branigan.
With the advance party of Rosco & Capt’ Steve arriving on
Thursday (23rd) followed by Pottsy, B1 (Bruce Milner) & Sel Wegner on
Saturday (25th), the remaining 55 players and friends descended upon the
City Beach Hotel and the Thipurai at strewn out intervals on Sunday (26th)
afternoon.
It should have been a straightforward drive from Pattaya,
particularly in this age of GPS but for some it wasn’t quite that easy,
which included the General who came off at the wrong toll twice and should
known better having driven here a number of times now (but he blamed Suzi,
the vehicle owner, Dave the GPS owner, for turning off the commentary and
Chad the navigator), so no doubt they will all be fined!
Then there was one other person, who shall not be named
but somehow his GPS took him up the highway 2 towards Khon Kaen; some 1100km
later at around 11.30 Sunday night, he arrived in Hua Hin.
![](pictures/s16-Outback-2.jpg)
Peter Rooke with his first hit
of the day at Black Mountain.
Tina’s and the Pink Panther quickly became the favoured
drinking establishments and with 60 Outbackers and friends roaming the small
Soi’s here, you couldn’t go far with bumping into somebody you knew or were
about to know.
Up early on Monday morning for breakfast and off to Sea
Pine (The Army Recreational Centre) for a 9.30 tee time, just a short trip
down the road (about 6km) going south and right on the beach.
The first drive of the tour was hit by Chad (Barry
Chadbourn) exactly on time and off we streamed, playing from the executive
tee (white) measuring around 6400 yards. It’s a bit of a daunting first tee
shot with water in front and on the right and a bunker on the left but then
you realise the hole is only just over 300 yards long, nevertheless a
testing little start.
![](pictures/s16-Outback-3.jpg)
Ken Hole and Eddie Beilby talk
about ‘what could have been’.
There’s one more hole on this side before ducking under
the road for the majority of the course then returning to the seaside for
the last four holes, with the 16th green right next to the sea and the 17th
& 18th running right alongside; all very scenic.
The course seemed to vary in condition between the front
and back nines; with the front side greens running very much better than the
back nine, which still seemed quite new and the bunkers which had no sand on
the front were too full and soft on the back but all in all worth about a
six out of ten, as it did little to inspire and was fairly uninteresting
with a couple of mickey mouse holes.
So to the golf, Jimmy Smiles, who was not eligible to win
the overall tournament, posted the best score of the day of 43pts to win Div
D by a massive seven points from the very last person to sign up for the
tour, Barry McIntosh on 36.
Keith Allen, who’s usually more at home hacking his way
round Pattaya Country Club with his good mate Jim Payne, surprised himself
with a 38 to win Div C and said afterwards, “Well I’ve had my good round!”
He was followed home by Mike Jeffreys (35).
Div B was taken by the ever-improving Jim Bryan with a
fantastic 42pts to win from Adam Oyston (38) and Div A went to Kev Waycott
(also with 38), who would find himself playing off single figures at the end
of the tour, as he continued his purple patch of the last couple of weeks.
Defending champion, Mark Reid, returned a fine 37 after beating Lloyd
Shuttleworth on count back.
There were three ‘2’s from Jimmy Smiles (8th) and two
more on the 17th from Rosco & Peter Rooke.
Div A (0-11)
1st Kev Waycott (10) 38pts
2nd Mark Reid (10) 37pts
3rd Lloyd Shuttleworth (6) 37pts
Div B (12-15)
1st Jim Bryan (14) 42pts
2nd Adam Oyston (15) 38pts
3rd Sel Wegner (12) 34pts
Div C (16-19)
1st Keith Allen (18) 38pts
2nd Mike Jeffreys (18) 35pts
3rd Suzi Lawton (18) 34pts
Div D (20+)
1st Jimmy Smiles (20) 43pts
2nd Barry McIntosh (20) 36pts
3rd Ed Delaney (24) 35pts
Tuesday, August 28, Day 2
- Black Mountain
It would be difficult to bring a group of 60 golfers to
Hua Hin and not play the renowned Black Mountain course; the only problem
is, the owner won’t stop fiddling with it. It’s been open since 2007 and
there is still work going on, which is mostly cosmetic. As a result, there
are many critics of the course but nevertheless this is a great layout and
should not be left out of anybody’s schedule, provided the price (green fee)
is right.
The weather was hot and mostly sunny as we teed off on
time from the “65” markers, which are the old blue tees, with Ray Dell
striking the first ball of the day. Later in the round we had the only rain
of the tour, which lasted about 20 minutes, briefly flooding some of the
fairways and greens which quickly drained away, causing little more than 30
minutes delay in total.
The top score of the day came again from Monday’s
surprise winner of Div C, Keith Allen, with a massive 43pts, which when
added to his first round total of 38 put him well clear after two days, with
a total of 81pts. General Jack played better than he has for a long time to
record a 39 to take second place in the same division with Mike Jeffreys
third on 38.
Div A went to Dave Branigan, with a net one over par of
35pts followed home by Paul Greenaway (34); whilst Peter Rooke won Div B
with 37 from Craig Matthews on 35.
Barry McIntosh moved into second place overall (total
76pts) with a fine 40pts today, winning Div D by two from Brian Maddox (38)
and Ed Delaney (34).
There were seven ‘2’s from; Ray Dell & Eddy Beilby (3rd
hole), Jan Eriksen & Paul Greenaway (8th hole), John
Fitzgerald (14th hole) and Keith Allen got two on the
3rd & 8th.
Div A (0-11)
1st Dave Branigan (9) 35pts
2nd Paul Greenaway (7) 34pts
3rd Jeff Calrow (11) 32pts
Div B (12-15)
1st Peter Rooke (15) 37pts
2nd Craig Matthews (15) 35pts
3rd Keith Buchanan (15) 33pts
Div C (16-19)
1st Keith Allen (18) 43pts
2nd Jack Moseley (19) 39pts
3rd Mike Jeffreys (18) 38pts
Div D (20+)
1st Barry McIntosh (20) 40pts
2nd Brian Maddox (20) 38pts
3rd Ed Delaney (24) 34pts
Thursday, August 30, Day 3
- Banyan –
So the showdown of the 2nd Syd
LeBron Memorial Putter was once again at the beautiful Banyan course, where
they look after us so well and the course is always in tip top condition.
Today was no exception but they (the management) were thrown into slight
disarray, as our start sheet had changed from the one sent to them the day
before (Weds) and changed another three times, before we teed off; even then
we failed to get it right leaving a three-ball near the back of the field,
as somebody failed to show, without so much as a phone call!
So our field was reduced to 55 but got away on time (9
a.m.) with as usual, the leaders going out last; the weather was great and
the greens slick and tricky to read.
As the round progressed the swirling wind strengthened to
become quite a factor on the back nine but it didn’t stop Mike Gosden firing
an excellent 40pts to win Div B, playing off 12. Behind him there was a gap
of seven then four players all with 33pts, headed by Craig Matthews on count
back.
There were another three players tied up also on 33pts in
Div A, this time behind the winner, Dave Branigan with 39; whilst Div C and
Div D went to Andrew Robinson (37pts) and George Bishop (38pts),
respectively.
There were another eight ‘2’s from Keith Allen & Keith
Buchanan (hole 4), Dave Branigan, Rosco & Kev Waycott (hole 15) and Art
O’Connor, Sugar Ray & another one for Kev. (hole 17).
Div A (0-1)
1st Dave Branigan (9) 39pts
2nd Lloyd Shuttleworth (6) 33pts
3rd Rosco Langoulant (10) 33pts
Div B (12-16)
1st Mike Gosden (12) 40pts
2nd Craig Matthews (15) 33pts
3rd Ray Dell (12) 33pts
Div C (17-19)
1st Andrew Robinson (18) 37pts
2nd Charlie Ayres (19) 36pts
3rd Sugar Ray Handford (18) 34pts
Div D (20+)
1st George Bishop (20) 38pts
2nd Ed Delaney (24) 37pts
3rd
Brian Maddox (20) 33pts
So another great tour down in Hua Hin, where our numbers
alone reflected the growing popularity of golf in this area. Welcome to all
the new guys to an Outback tour and I hope you all enjoyed it and thank you
to the golfing committee for all their help and to Micky & Dah for driving
the Outback buses.
We return here in March 10th 2013
for the 2nd Hua Hin Handicap, information about which
will be published as soon as the high season rates for the hotels and golf
courses are made available.
So congratulations to Keith Allen (113pts) who held it
altogether to retain his five shot lead to win the tournament from Barry
McIntosh (108pts) and Dave Branigan (106pts).

Allidi wins Growling Swan Monthly Mug
PSC Golf from The Growling Swan

Stephen Newton, J J Harney,
Peter Grey & Mike Allidi.
Peter Blackburn
Monday, August 27, Bangpra – Stableford
Once more we had a good field of 20 golfers who were looking
forward to re-visiting what is now known as the ‘Monkey Course’, Bangpra.
Stu “Heineken” Rifkin took everyone by surprise when he turned up 35 minutes
early and some of us partook of the free tea & coffee at The Growling Swan
while Stu popped down the road for his brekky.
We welcomed Alan “Jaidee” Trannekar from Denmark and Mick Beatson from Gove
in the Northern Territory of Australia.
![](pictures/s17-Growling-2.jpg)
Stephen Newton, Tony Campbell
& Stu Rifkin.
With all present early we headed off in 2 mini vans 5 minutes ahead of
schedule at 8.25 am and after a 40 minute trip arrived at Bangpra where it
once more seemed rather quiet. Sure enough, after waiting for a three-ball
to tee off we managed to send our first group away 25 minutes before our
allotted tee time of 10.00 am. The weather was terrific and fairly mild for
this time of year and as usual the golf course was looking a treat.
After telling myself since early morning to make sure I leave the ball under
the hole on the notoriously quick greens I promptly put my third shot on the
first green 20 feet above the hole and sure enough, started with a three
putt. I was not on my own though as many of us fell for the same trick
throughout the day most of the field struggled to come to terms with the
greens which resulted in some fairly ordinary scores being recorded.
We proceeded at a good pace completing the front nine in just over 2 hours
but as the weather become hotter things slowed down somewhat and after
delays on a couple of tees we managed to finish the round in four hours &
fifteen minutes. It was a very enjoyable round of golf on this challenging
layout which is still one of the best around and whilst the scores were not
very good for most of us there was certainly one player who excelled on the
day.
With the good field it enabled us to have 2 grades with four podium spots in
each. A Grade was for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Grade for 21 and over. We had
nearest the pins on all the par threes which were sponsored by Stephen
Newton, Peter Bye, Scott Lobenwein & Tony Alcorn. We also had longest first
putts on the 9th & 18th greens which were kindly sponsored by Secrets Night
Club.
Showing up early certainly did the trick for Stu “Heineken” Rifkin who was a
runaway winner of A Grade with 40 points, 8 points ahead of yours truly in
second spot. Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (17 point back nine) came
third with 31 points, beating Takeshi Hakozaki (16 point back nine) on a
count back.
In the B Grade Stephen Newton’s 32 points was good enough to give him a win
with Max “Two Corsets” Bracegirdle in second place on 28 points. Scott
“Chun” Lobenwein was third with 27 points and Graham “Grunter” Buckingham
completed the podium with 26 points.
A Flight (0-20)
1st Stu Rifkin (16) 40pts
2nd Peter Blackburn (11) 32pts
3rd Alain Taddei (18) 31pts
4th Takeshi Hakozaki (11) 31pts
B Flight (21+)
1st Stephen Newton (30) 32pts
2nd Max Bracegirdle (25) 28pts

The winner of the Compass Cap (awarded to the player with the worst score on
the day) was Tony Campbell who then wore the cap with pride for the next few
hours. Deefa the Dog’s master, Hunter was away on a trip so Toddy took him
for a walk & collected many donations to charity from our generous Growling
Swan crew.
It was then back to The Growling Swan for some coldies and post mortems of
the day’s events whilst looking forward to the next golf outing in 3 days
time, the third Growling Swan Monthly Mug.
Thursday, August 30, Mt. Shadow –Monthly Mug/Stroke
The Growling Swan was “abuzz” this morning as we assembled in anticipation
of competing for the third Monthly Mug at the challenging Mountain Shadow.
It was a great turnout, just 1 short of our maximum of 24 and there were a
couple of new faces in Paul Quinn and JJ Harney who were made to feel most
welcome. Sadly we were saying farewell to Mick Beatson who will shortly be
returning to Gove on the Northern Territory of Australia and Graeme Preston
who is returning to Melbourne, Australia.
Three mini vans were required and as everyone was on time or early,
including Stu “Heineken” Rifkin again, we departed the G.S. a couple of
minutes ahead of schedule at 8.28 am and proceeded down No. 7. We arrived 45
minutes later to find the course reasonably quiet and for a change we were
told that we would have to start on the 10th tee. We later found out that
this was due to the greens on the front nine having to be cleared of the
recent sanding.
Of course the day’s event was a stroke round and all were reminded of that
prior to tee off and our first group managed to get away 12 minutes early at
9.48 am. The weather was once again terrific and at first not too hot and as
usual the course was in very good shape with the greens on our first nine,
the back one, very quick with some tricky pin positions.
None of our group were playing well but we hung in there and finished the
first nine in just over 2 hours with no hold ups to speak of. It started to
warm up during our second nine which did not improve our golf at all and
Buckers in particular was having his own private battle with all the par
fives, which is of course telling in a stroke round. We had a quick stop for
drinks half way through our second nine and finished the full round in the
decent time of four hours & twelve minutes.
Once more a good field it enabled us to have 2 grades with four podium spots
in each in addition to the overall Monthly Mug Winner. A Grade was for
handicaps 0 to 18 and B Grade for 19 and over. There were also 3 golfers
without current handicaps and their scores were calculated using the
Callaway Scoring System.
We had nearest the pins on all the par threes and longest first putts on the
9th & 18th greens. Our thanks go out to the sponsors of these novelty awards
and they were The Growling Swan, Stephen Newton, Fred Dineley, Sandy Leiper,
Mick Beatson & Tony Alcorn.
That fine golfer Mike Alldi shot 74 gross, net 73 to take out the third
Growling Swan Monthly Mug. The winner in A Grade was JJ Harney with a net 74
and in a count back on net 75 Alain “Inspector Clouseau” Taddei (net 35 on
the back nine) finished second from Stu “Heineken” Rifkin (net 41 on the
back nine) in third spot. Martin Todd was fourth with a net 78.
In the B Grade Stephen Newton finished on top with a net 77 with Graham
“Grunter” Buckingham (even after a 14 on the par five 3rd) second with a net
83. Another count back was required to separate third & fourth, both with
net 85 and Kae (net 43 on the back nine) shaded out Graeme Preston (net 45
on the back nine). The winner of the Callaway Grade was Mick Beatson with a
net 73.

The winner of the Compass Cap for worst score of the day was Max “Two
Corsets” Bracegirdle who unfortunately had to go home before presentations
due to illness but kindly left the customary donation to charity for
receiving the award.
Back at The Growling Swan for presentations we thanked mine host, Peter
Grey, for sponsoring the event and also providing a delicious chicken supper
for all present. It was then down to the serious business of downing several
coldies and as usual lots of fun & laughter.
Note: Growling Swan Golf welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low & high
handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays
& Thursdays, meeting at The Growling Swan (formerly The Bunker Bar) in Soi
Chaiyapoon at 8.00 am with transport departing at 8.30 am. For bookings or

Max factors in monthly medal
PSC golf from The Golf Club
Steve Ellison
Monday, August 27, Green Valley (White tees) –
Stableford
1st Alain Pelsherbe (16) 38pts
2nd John Pierrel (15) 38pts
3rd Fred Brent (7) 38pts
4th Don Bland (3) 38pts
The last week of August sets up for a busy week of golf with 4 first-class
venues to close out the month. Today was an overcast day, which was a
blessing as it dropped the temperature a couple of degrees. It has been hot
this month, but today was not too bad and the steady breeze was an added
bonus, especially for the walkers.
Max
Scott, winner of the August monthly medal - and a new shirt.
There was a bit of water in the well groomed bunkers, but other than that
the course was stunning, and in peak condition. The ball sat up in the
fairways beautifully, the greens were fast and true, and the day went
flawlessly.
Our visiting Parisian Alain Pelsherbe has been on a streak of late, and
today he took top honours to claim first in a most unusual situation. We had
four golfers that shot 38, and so the count back begins: three of them also
had 20 on the back, so then we go to the 6 hole score and Alain just nipped
the other lads for the win. Now Alain plays off 15 for the rest of his trip
to Pattaya!
John Pierrel, tipped in this column last week, took 2nd and newlywed Fred
Brent claimed 3rd as pal Don Bland rounded out the top of the results list,
but could only muster a 17 on the back nine with his 38 total.
Tuesday, August 28, Siam Old Course (White tees) –
Stableford.
1st Paul McNally (3) 39pts
2nd John McHugh (11) 39pts
3rd Mike Newbert (14) 39pts
Why does Siam make things so difficult? They have such a rigid, structured
starting system you hardly have access to your own golf clubs to take to the
practice green for a few putts. Yes, the course is spectacular and of course
plays host to the Honda LPGA in January, but the boys just wanna have fun!
![](pictures/s19-Golf2.jpg)
Friday’s top two, Brian
Prudden and Steven Holland share a beer.
Why the driving range there does not open until 10:00 is
yet another mystery, but we still keep coming back for the great golf course
that it is. Clubhouse facilities are first rate and the sports day rate of
2,550 is fair for such a quality golf experience. But why is it we end up
with less hair than when we started?
There was a member’s bounce happening here today and as the bankers say,
local knowledge is priceless. A trio of 39’s by Paul McNally, John McHugh
and Montauk Mike Newbert blew away the rest of the field. This course is one
of the tougher tracks we have here in Pattaya and shooting a 39 will usually
win on the day. Well played boys, especially to Mike as it was his first
time here!
Speaking of great golf courses, we have a Bangkok Road Trip on the 19th and
20th of September playing the magnificent Alpine Golf Club (the best course
in Thailand?) and Lam Luk Ka with an overnight at the ibis Nana. Pop in for
details, it should be a great one!
Wednesday, August 29, Bangpra (White Tees) - Monthly Medal
1st Max Scott (4) net 70
2nd Martin Rock (10) net 73
3rd Brian Prudden (19) net73
4th Mick Bereford (17) net 75
This is a testing course for stroke play, but once in a while there must be
a challenge to the game. The penultimate round in August is at one of our
favourite courses in the area and played fast and furious.
Australian Max Scott is one of the best golfers to have played with The Golf
Club; he plays off 4 and a very consistent clubman. He won by three shots,
which is quite a score at Bangpra.
Solid as the proverbial, Martin Rock was second and steady Brian Prudden was
once again on the podium in third while the natty Micky Beresford looked
great shooting a 75 net to claim fourth spot. Brian has been playing with a
bad wrist, but watch out next week as it seems to be all right now. He
shoots his age on a regular basis, like I said, watch out!
Friday, August 31, Phoenix (White Tees) - Stableford
1st Brian Prudden (19) 44pts
2nd Steven Holland (17) 37pts
A smaller turnout than usual for the Friday event as we wind up a week of
great golf and another month gets flipped over on our bar top P.S.C.
calendar.
The Phoenix is one of the prettiest golf courses in Pattaya and the vistas
over the putting green in the early morning light are spectacular. With the
sunlight glinting off the mountainside Golden Buddha, the mist in the valley
through the pines and palms make for a stunning Thai landscape. If you have
never visited the temple complex that is also part of that lovely view, you
are missing something special. We sometimes take for granted what a slice of
heaven we have here in our Pattaya Wonderland.
Brian Prudden was once again not just in the frame, but all over the canvas
as he did the rounds with a terrific score of 44 on the day. Brian (now off
17 after this round) has been playing some great golf and the Silver Tees
are the preserve of the over 70’s at The Golf Club. Thanks for joining us,
see you all next week, and keep it in the fairway!
Note: The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro. We play on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday so come join us for a seriously fun day out. Just call

Gaussa takes the title
PSC golf from Tropical Bert’s
![](pictures/s20-Berts-1.jpg)
The scribe, right, presents
the ‘MBMG Golfer of the Month’ award to Mike Gaussa.
Derek Brook
Tuesday, August 28, Greenwood – Stableford
The question as we drove up to Greenwood was would it be a dry
day or a wet day? On the way there we went through areas where we got wet,
then it would dry up, but all around us the black clouds threatened. Only
good thing was that we had a fair wind about, and the clouds that seemed to
be over the course were moving quite fast.
This was the end of the month, so the MBMG Golfer of The Month award was up
for grabs and as is usual we had three or four main contenders and it all
depended who played well on the day. Mind, one or two of those with a chance
fancied their prospects, especially those who had been playing well of late.
Booking in we were told that buggies were only allowed on the paths, so as
we went to the start we knew it was to be a long walk. The test for the day
was to be A & C so off we went, down the cart path. Sometimes it is a longer
walk taking a cart than it is walking down the centre of the fairways,
however as I do not usually hit the ball down the middle, so it can be a
toss-up. Get a course with cart paths either side, now there speaks
experience, and a wonky driver.
![](pictures/s20-Berts-2.jpg)
Tuesday’s top three with one
of Bert’s finest.
It did not rain on the way around, we dodged the bullet,
but the fairways were a no-run area, and greens were so slow the ball
stopped half way to the hole. So we will do away with discussing the course,
except to say it was difficult, and we all enjoyed our day out.
It was a busy drive back as the road was full of silly people going home
after work. Yes, sorry to use four letter words but I mean … work! I used to
have to do that, but it severely restricts your leisure time.
Back at Bert’s it was soon time for the results. The winner on the day was
Dave Nicholson with 43 points. I had very cleverly put him with our two low
handicappers as no one else wanted to be humiliated, but he rose to the
occasion, well done Dave!
In second was Mike Gaussa, one of our MBMG potential winners, with 38
points. In third was Bob Watson with 36 points, off a 2 handicap, on count
back over Joel Flor.
So the winner of the ‘MBMG Golfer of the Month’ title was Mike Gaussa who
sealed it with his second place on the day. Well done Mike!

Phillips hits purple patch at Pattana
Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
![](pictures/s21-Jomtien.jpg)
Andy Mills, Harry Vincenzi and
Linsay Phillips.
Monday, August 27, Green Valley –
Stableford
There were some dark clouds in the distance over the hills as we
approached this course but as always our undaunted group arrived early and
we teed off 30 minutes ahead of our scheduled 10.00am start.
There was a lot of debating on the first tee regarding the re-structuring of
the first four holes here; there were some positive comments and also some
negative but it’s still a popular venue for the majority of our players.
We had six groups out today with the cut at 8-16 and 17+ and still in form
the Yorkshire farmer, playing off 18 won division 2 with 36 points, well
done Geoff Stubbs! Lee Casy was second two points behind and David Phillips
was third on 32.
Keeping an eye on his 15 handicap over the past four months, Lindsay
Phillips won division 1 with 35 points while the Welsh Wizard, playing off
10 , Dave Richards was second after beating Mikael Andersson and Wilf Latham
on a 19/18/17 back nine count back as all three came in with 34 points.
Dave also birdied the 12th for the only ‘2’ in division 1 and there were two
rollovers in division 2 to Pattana on Wednesday. In the end today the
weather stayed fine and the course, especially the greens, were in great
condition.
Near pins went to Mikael Andersson, Andy Mills, Dave Richards, Harry
Vincenzi, Tom Novak (2).
Wednesday, August 29, Pattana - Stableford
As we checked in we were told the A course was still closed for
renovation and we were allocated the B and C today, not everyone’s favourite
starting hole but this did not reflect in the scores today. There were six
groups out with the cut at 8-16 in division 1 and 17 plus in division 2.
Playing with us for the last six months, Lindsay Phillips, with a handicap
of 15, scored 16 on the front nine and a remarkable 27 on the back to win
division 1 with 43 points. The Sheffield boy Andy Mills, now off 7, came in
with 38 points for second place and in third with 34 was Harry Vincenzi.
Alan Duckett from the Windmill here in Jomtien in Soi 5 took the top podium
position in division 2 with 20 points on the front nine and 22 on the back,
playing off 19. William Chang was second with 40 points and Willy Van
Heetvelde took third with a meagre 35 points.
Near pins went to Andy Mills (2), Dave Richards (2), Alan Bissell, Rodney
Howett, Adrian Shelley and ‘count back’ Burnie.
In the ‘2’s Lindsay Phillips birdied C2 and C7 and Tony Kay and Dave
Richards the same to share the pot in division 1, while Burnie Sinclair shot
a ‘2’ on C2 as well and took the rollover from Bangpra and Green Valley in
division 2..
To our amazement, the renovations to the restaurant have still not been
completed so we were back in the conference room again.
Friday, August 31, Eastern Star - Stableford
There was lovely cool breeze blowing as we stepped out onto the
first tee and this continued throughout the round until the last couple of
holes -perfect conditions today.
There was a warm welcome return to Cully Monks after two months back in
Ireland but with no golf he was not in the reckoning today, but the geese on
the 16th hole have multiplied since his departure.
Marty Rock won division 1 with 35 points, Jon Lay was second one point
behind and Wilf Latham beat Mikael Andersson on a 19/17 back nine count back
after they both came in with 33 points.
The organiser won Division 2 with 35 points, Tony Holehouse claimed second
one point behind and the renowned Aussie chef, Mark Armstrong was third with
33 points.
There are no ‘2’s in any division today with a double rollover next week in
division 1 and seven in division 2.
A new local rule has been imposed here at a Jomtien Golf - if you don’t
drive past the ladies tee you need to treat the lads or lasses in your three
or four-ball group on the day to a small beverage back in the clubhouse..

Cooney clobbers the field at Treasure Hill
PSC golf Bunker Boys @ The Ranch
Monday, August 27,
Eastern Star – Stableford
![](pictures/s23-Bunker.jpg)
August Golfer of the Month
Gerry Cooney, left, with new boss Buff
Today we played our first game out of The Ranch bar,
following a busy weekend of moving golf equipment from the Bowling Green,
and we’d like to take this opportunity to thank Dave, Evelyn and the staff
of the Bowling Green for looking after us during our 9 month stay there.
The chosen venue today was Eastern Star and 14 golfers
turned out for the inaugural game from The Ranch (we’re not sure yet how
many golfers turned up at the Bowling Green!). The course was generally in
good condition, with the greens running somewhat faster than on our previous
visit, and with the current promotion, the course offers excellent value for
money.
There was no one in front of us and the round was
completed in well under 4 hours, leaving ample time for refreshments in
nearby Ban Chang before heading back to The Ranch.
Dave Keats had a memorable day, scoring 22 points on the
inward nine to beat Gerry Cooney on the count back.
1st Dave Keats (28) 37pts
2nd Gerry Cooney (16) 37pts
3rd Colin Greig (9) 35pts
Near Pins: Gerry Cooney, Dave Keats and Geoff Cox
(2).
Wednesday, August 29,
Burapha A & B – Stableford
Sixteen golfers out today for our first visit in quite
some time to the Burapha course. We elected to play from the white tees,
which at 6,200 yards is somewhat shorter than our normal distance, and the
scores on the day reflected that.
The course was in great condition, with the greens some
of the best we have played on in recent weeks. All in all, everything was
set for a high scoring day, and it was no big surprise that three golfers
broke the 40 point barrier.
Geoff Hart led the field with a massive 44 points,
followed by the fast improving Tony Robbins and Peter Habgood taking third.
Tony’s second place finish brings him into contention for the hotly
contested Golfer of the Month title, with five players separated by only two
points, and with only one game remaining.
1st Geoff Hart (21) 44pts
2nd Tony Robbins (14) 42pts
3rd Peter Habgood (18) 41pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Bill Smith, Geoff Parker
and Paul Smith
Friday, August 31,
Treasure Hill – Stableford
Today was the big day for the contenders in the Golfer of
the Month competition and the four leaders (who could all still win) were
put in the same group for what was anticipated to be a close battle. The
weather was overcast and we elected to play off the yellow tees on this
testing course, so the stage was set for an epic contest.
In the event, former Bunker champion Gerry Cooney blew
the field away with a superb round, scoring 21 points on the outward nine
and 24 points on the inward. To top off the day, Gerry delivered the coup de
grace in true champion’s style, finishing the round with a birdie on the
difficult 18th hole. Congratulations Gerry and surely
that handicap will be coming down soon!
PJ Redmond made a welcome return to the podium 11 points
behind the champion and one point ahead of Reg Smart.
A special mention is due for Raleigh Gosney who injured
his arm moving the golf lockers last Saturday and was unable to play golf
this week – your absentee golfing mates owe you a beer.
1st Gerry Cooney (16) 45pts
2nd P.J. Redmond (24) 35pts
3rd Reg Smart (29) 34pts
Near Pins: Colin Greig, Geoff Parker, Tony Robbins
and Takeshi.
Note: The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf
society which now plays out of The Ranch bar on Pattaya 3rd
Road, in front of the fire station, and almost opposite the Buffalo Bar. We
play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you
enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not
come and join us.
We meet at The Ranch at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new
players are always welcome. Contact Buff on 086 046 5091 or 080 605 5663 for
all enquiries. The society is also in the process of resurrecting our
website which you can find at www.bunkersociety.com.

Winfield top scores
for the week
PSC golf from Café Kronborg
Monday, August 27, Century Chonburi
– Stableford
1st Mike Allidi 36pts
2nd Mike Winfield 33pts
3rd Ted Morris 31pts
4th Hugh O’Donnell 30pts
We were off to Century Chonburi with a travel time of 55 minutes, a
smooth check-in and off the first tee 30 minutes early under partly
sunny skies.
This is a long course with some interesting holes and was in decent
condition considering the cheap green fee; there were even some bunkers
that had been raked recently!
One flight today and Mike Allidi was the winner with 36 points (gross
73). Mike Winfield took second on 33 points, Ted Morris was third with
31, and Hugh O’Donnell came fourth on a count back over Daryl Evans,
both 30 points.
Back in the building that serves as the clubhouse after a round of 3
hours and 45 minutes (3-ball), we welcomed Mark Graham from Fort Worth
Texsas.
Thursday, August 30, Burapha – Stableford
1st Mike Winfield (23) 37pts
2nd Daryl Evans (21) 35pts
3rd Michael Padilla (22) 34pts
We were off to play the Burapha east course today, arriving in 30
minutes for a swift check-in and off the A1 tee 35 minutes early under
delightfully sunny skies and a cool breeze. The course on the day was
immaculate and is always a delight to play.
Back in the clubhouse after a very quick round of 3 hours and 40 minutes
we welcomed Michael Padilla from southern California.
The winner on the day was Mike Winfield with 37 points ahead of Daryl
Evans in second on 35 while Michael Padilla took third with 34 points.

Golfers and Ned Kelly
Travellers Rest Golf Group
Andy Rich
In major golf tournaments they say that Saturday is
moving day, well not for the TRGG it isn’t, in fact Tuesday 4th September is
moving day. You may recall that last week I reported that the TRGG was being
forced to relocate again because of a major redevelopment to its present
headquarters at the Bowling Green in Soi Xzyte. We shall now be based at the
Valentine Guest House and Ned Kelly Bar in Soi Lengkee as from midday on
Tuesday 4th September.
![](pictures/s24-TR%20golf-1.jpg)
Seil Revels, left, winner at
Phoenix and Fergus Brennan, winner at Bangpra.
For those of you trying to find us, just look out for the
double fronted bar with a couple of large white golf balls outside the left
hand entrance. All newcomers will be made very welcome and for all our
regular visitors we hope you will find the new facilities to your liking.
On Monday 27th August the TRGG visited Bangpra, the
monkey course, and found it in excellent condition. The winner on the day
was Fergus Brennan (12) who shot a very respectable 35 points considering he
has that dreaded golfers’ disease sha??ing.
Just as actors think it is unlucky to mention the word
“Macbeth” golfers are the same when it comes to sha??ing. Once you have a
problem with sha??ing it can return at any minute and can ruin your day. So
if there are any sha??ing experts out there please contact Fergus Brennan at
the TRGG and cure him of this terrible disease. He said he would do anything
to never shank again.
Anyway back to Mondays results. Following Fergus home was
Billy Allen (14) on 32 points and in third place was Richard Talbot (18) on
31 points.
![](pictures/s24-TR%20golf-2.jpg)
Derek Thorogood.
On Tuesday 28th August we headed off to Khao Kheow to
play the A and B courses. Now Khao Kheow is usually one of the very best
kept courses around Pattaya but at the moment there are numerous ground
under repair signs on a lot of the fairways, in fact they are like an
outbreak of mushrooms, they are everywhere. I know repair work has to be
attended to but perhaps it would be better if they closed one course at a
time until the work was completed.
Michael Prideaux (12) managed to make the best of things
and won with 35 points. John Goudge (6) was second with 34 points and Derek
Thorogood (17) was third with 31.
Thursday 30th August saw the TRGG pay its regular weekly
visit to Phoenix to play the Lake and Ocean courses. Judging by the scores
returned, familiarity with Phoenix is breeding contempt because the three
leaders of the competition shot far better than their handicaps.
Seil Revels (4) returned with 40 points to win outright
from Michael Prideaux (12) who took second place on 39 after beating Michael
Maguire (20) on count back.
On Saturday 1st September Mountain Shadow hosted the TRGG
and that Australian chappie Derek Thorogood (17) (aka Ned Kelly) shot 40
points to ride off into the sunset with all the prize money. Jim Cleaver
(13) was second with 37 and Ross Schiffke (14) was third with 32 points.
Good luck to all you golfing enthusiasts for the coming week!

Blown away at Sunday Softball
![](pictures/s25-PSC1.jpg)
Norm Kisken rounds 3rd base.
Sunday Sept 2nd was breezy and mostly cloudy which made
for perfect playing conditions for the 24 softball players who came to the
Thai Polo Club for the weekly Pattaya Sports Club softball games.
In game one ‘Just Burgers’ pounded the ball to right
field but allstar outfielder Darren Allcock handled every ball with ease.
Dave Hyde from Canada joined the Just Burgers team and showed off impressive
skills in his first softball game in Pattaya. Just Burgers was the
international team for the day with players from Canada, Australia, England,
Norway and Spain. Sunrise Tacos prevailed 14-10.
![](pictures/s25-PSC2.jpg)
Ben Reiber’s home run blast.
Game two saw Sunrise Tacos get off to a strong start with
Ben Reiber blasting two home runs over the center field fence. Ricky Roberts
and Sean Gregory came through with some clutch hits. But Just Burgers batted
around the order and scored 7 runs in the 5th inning.
The international guys really came through and held on for a 13-11 win.
Game three was supposed to be the deciding game in the
series. It was very close with time running out, and the weather started to
look threatening. A little wind wasn’t about to stop play or so we thought.
About 2 minutes later wind gusts of hurricane force blew umbrellas, tables
and chairs, scoreboard, the outfield fence and anything else that wasn’t
anchored to the ground. Some items were reportedly recovered later in the
day in Rayong province!
Players ran for the clubhouse and more amber beverages

Stuvik clocks fast times at Czech race weekend
![](pictures/s27-Stuvik-1.jpg)
Sandy Stuvik on the grid at
the Autodrom Most circuit in the Czech Republic.
Seventeen year-old Thai racer Sandy Stuvik arrived at the
Autodrom Most circuit in the Czech Republic last weekend for the final
official testing of the year, prior to the 6th round of the 2012 Formula
Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup
Sandy immediately showed his improved form as he set the
4th fastest time in the test and gave clear signs that he wanted to be
included in the podium fight.
In Saturday’s qualifying session he secured P7 and P13
starting positions after struggling with finding the right set up balance in
the car. The first of the 3 races then saw the Phuket born racer shooting up
to 5th position and by mid race started pushing to overtake the car in
front. Although faster than the cars around him, he lost out in the
overtaking and instead lost 2 positions to finish in 7th place. Still the
times from the race showed that the Thai driver had the fifth quickest car.

The punctured rear tyre from
Race 2.
Sunday’s second race started well, but on the 2nd lap and
already up to tenth position he was hit from behind by another car and
consequently picked up a puncture. After a pit stop and new rear wheel, he
rejoined the circuit just after the lead group and although a lap down, kept
going faster that the leaders. In the end he could not secure any points,
but took pleasure in the fact that he had set the third fastest time of the
33 cars.
In the third and final race Stuvik again started from 7th
position but incurred a drive-through penalty for jumping the start.
Rejoining the field in last position he started chasing down the cars in
front and came all the way up to 17th place, before another car side-swiped
the Thai and ended his race.
The team can take pride in the huge performance
improvement shown of late by the young Thai driver, clearly indicating he
will be a force to be reckoned with for a championship challenge in Europe
next year. The hugely competitive Formula Renault NEC series ensures that
any driver graduating in the top group will be a serious challenger in any
championship.
The next and penultimate round of the 2012 season will be
at the Zandvoort Circuit in the Netherlands on 20-23 September.
Sandy Nicholas Stuvik races for the Royal Automobile Association of
Thailand and is sponsored by The Pizza Company, Singha Corporation, Dacon
Inspection Services and Sports Authority of Thailand.

Ludovick double sees
off Thai Port
Thai Premier League Football 2012 Season
A double strike by recently returned Cameroonian
forward Ludovick Takam helped the ‘Dolphins’ of Pattaya United to a much
needed 4-2 victory away at fellow strugglers Thai Port FC last Saturday.

With the two teams occupying spots at the wrong end of the league table, the
match took on extra significance and was a ‘must win’ encounter for both
sides.
After surviving some early pressure from the home team, United got off to
the perfect start at a sparsely populated PAT Stadium by taking an 8th
minute lead through midfielder Rangsarit Sutthisa, who fired in a low
free-kick that the Thai Port keeper made a hash of and could only lie
prostrate as the ball crept into the corner of the net.
The goalkeeper’s blushes were not yet over though as he handed United a
second goal in the 26th minute when he failed to keep out a tame left foot
shot from Japanese defender Keisuke Ogawa.
Ludovick struck his first goal of the match just three minutes later to
effectively put the game out of reach, as he evaded the offside trap and ran
through to calmly stroke the ball into the far corner of the net.
United might have been in cruise control at this stage but the home team
gave themselves a lifeline just before halftime as Anusak Laosaengthai stole
through the heart of the Pattaya defence to fire the ball past Narit and
reduce the deficit.
After the break, United spurned some good openings to regain their three
goal cushion and when Thai Port forward Kritsada Sakeaw pulled another goal
back on the hour mark, the panic bells were starting to ring for the
visiting ‘Dolphins.’
Have endured some disappointing results of late though, this time United
were not to be denied and Ludovick showed great composure to round a
defender and slot the ball home for his second goal late on to seal maximum
points for the visitors. Thai Port had a couple of half chances towards the
end but they were unable to convert and the match finished 4-2 in Pattaya
United’s favor.
At the top of the table, Muang Thong United maintained their 10 point lead
with a 2-1 win over Bangkok Glass while Chonburi FC remained their closest
challengers after they put three goals past Chainart on Sunday.
Pattaya United’s next fixture is on Saturday, Sept. 8 at home to Army United
at the Nongprue Stadium in Pattaya. Kick-off is at 6 p.m.
