PHICHIT, 22 July 2015 – A nearly completed bridge in Phichit has collapsed overnight amid heavy rain in the lower northern region. No one was killed or injured during the incident.

The suspension bridge over Nan River was two meters wide and 139 meters long. Around 9.5 million baht was spent construction up until the bridge gave way.

According to initial survey, heavy rain was suspected to have weakened the base of the bridge to the point where it collapsed into the river. No one had been using the bridge when it toppled. Locals are calling for further inspection to determine the cause of the collapse.

The bridge was commissioned by the Department of Public Works and Town & Country Planning. Construction began on June 23 last year and was being modified recently by a private contractor. The bridge was due to open for public use during the upcoming Buddhist Lent.
