BANGKOK, 24 October 2011 – The Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) geared up for the arrival of the flood victims at the Rajamangala National Stadium and the National Sports Training Center Muak Lek in Saraburi Province where a total of 2,500-3,000 evacuees can take shelter.
SAT Director Kanokpan Julkasem revealed about the preparation to use the Rajamangala National Stadium as a flood evacuation center after some of the flood evacuees from Thammasat Universiry (TU) are ready to move in today. Speaking after the meeting, Mr Kanokpan said it was estimated that a majority of the flood victims in TU would move to the National Sports Training Center Muak Lek which can accommodate about 1,500-2,000 evacuees. The center contains 3 dormitories, 2 gymnasiums and an air-conditioned administration unit coupled with a canteen.
The Rajamangala National Stadium, with a capacity of accommodating 500-1,000 evacuees, will provide its front building and the stadium equipped with air-conditioners and mattresses. Despite the two additional evacuation centers, some flood victims demand to go back home while some will move to military camps in Saraburi province. Although the Rajamangala National Station is located in the flood-prone area which might affect the travelling of the evacuees later on, the SAT has prepared a back-up plan to deal with the looming obstacle. Assistance to the flood victims is supported by officials from Ministry of Tourism and Sports and other volunteers.
