BANGKOK, May 31 – Thailand’s opposition Democrat Party has officially sought to impeach Deputy Prime Minister/Finance Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong for negligence of duty.
Democrat deputy leader Korn Chatikavanij submitted a list of 131 MPs who endorsed the move to Senate Speaker Nikhom Wairatpanich.
They charged Mr Kittiratt with intentionally violating the constitution by ignoring to set up the National Savings Fund as required by the law.
Mr Korn said the law on National Savings Fund, which has been in force since 2011, compels the Finance Ministry to establish the fund within 365 days after the law was announced in the Royal Gazette on May 8, 2012.
One year has passed and the fund has not been set up, he said, adding the delay has deprived more than 10 million people from welfare and privileges they are entitled by the fund.
The former finance minister said Mr Kittiratt, in his capacity as current finance minister, is failing to protect the people’s rights.
The senate speaker asked for some time to check the authenticity of the 131 MPs’ signatures and the charges before forwarding it to the National Anti-Corruption Commission within 15 days.
