NAKHON PHANOM, 3 May 2015 – Nakhom Phanom province has witnessed the worst tropical storm in 20 years causing damages to nearly 200 houses in the central district in just one hour.

The storm has damaged more than 2,000 houses since its arrival last month. The government has forked out over 50 million baht on the repair of damaged property. The budget is exclusive of financial aid of up to 30,000 baht which it approved for each of affected families.

Authorities reported the storm last night struck nearly 200 houses in three sub-districts. Administrative officials and the military are combining forces to help assess the damage before starting the repair and other assistance schemes.

Nakhon Phanom Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office said the volatile weather had intensified the frequency and strength of the storm, adding that this year’s damage to property was the heaviest in 20 years.

Authorities have warned local people to remain on the alert for a possible comeback of a thunderstorm.
