BANGKOK, Thailand – Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, addressed the media on September 9 about the future of cannabis policies and entertainment complex development under the new government. Following a special Cabinet meeting to set government policies before presenting them to Parliament, Anutin discussed the continuation of cannabis policies and his party’s stance on entertainment complexes.

Anutin emphasized that the Bhumjaithai Party supports the enforcement of a strict Cannabis Control Act, aimed at regulating medical cannabis use. He confirmed that discussions on this matter took place with former Prime Minister Settha Thavisin before his departure, and that relevant agencies were involved. The focus remains on medical use to ensure clarity and control.

Regarding the promotion of Entertainment Complexes, Anutin expressed support for such developments, as they attract tourists and generate revenue and employment. He acknowledged the need to amend existing laws related to entertainment complexes but did not directly address previous opposition to gambling legislation. Anutin stressed that the Bhumjaithai Party is open to supporting projects that benefit the public, provided they align with legal and moral standards and contribute positively to the economy.

Anutin also responded to inquiries about the party’s shift in position on gambling laws. He refuted claims of a reversal, clarifying that the Bhumjaithai Party’s stance remains focused on ensuring that any policy introduced benefits Thailand’s economy and adheres to ethical norms. He described the Entertainment Complex concept as broader than just casinos, including shopping malls, food centers, amusement parks, and concert halls designed to boost tourism.

Previously, on August 13, Chaichanok Chidchob, Secretary-General of the Bhumjaithai Party, voiced opposition to the Entertainment Complex Bill, citing concerns over its impact on illegal gambling, unclear benefits to the state and public, and insufficient provisions for Thai workers. However, after Thaksin Shinawatra endorsed the project and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra included it in her urgent policy agenda, Anutin’s stance appeared to align with supporting the complex.
