1# Mexican deportees: the stories behind the statistics.
US deportations have jumped more than 60 percent over the past five
years with agents aggressively going after illegal immigrants not only at
the border but in the interior of the United States.
At the same time, fewer people are attempting to sneak across the reinforced
US - Mexico border, and arrests by the Border Patrols along the southern
border have dropped by almost 40 percent since 2003.
Mexico’s deported return through the country’s border gate each day in their
hundreds, uncertain of future they face.
2# Water purified by sunshine.
For up to a million residents in Kibera, Nairobi’s biggest slum,
sanitation and safe drinking water is a real problem.
But a new project is using sunlight to purify drinking water, dramatically
slashing cases of waterborne disease.

1# Skeleton exhibition reveals London’s ongoing burial problems.
A macabre exhibition has opened in London that displays dozens of
skeletons recovered from redevelopment sites across the capital.
The Wellcome Collection has selected a few of the 17,000 skeletons from the
Museum of London’s collection that spans sixteen centuries. Through careful
forensic analysis, each skeleton reveals its own story, allowing fascinating
insights into the times in which they lived and the health hazards of the
day - from syphilis to smallpox and rickets.
2# Pakistan burn victims turn beauticians.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan found that in 2007, at least 33
women were burned in acid attacks, and 45 were set on fire. But the
statistics are likely an undercount, since many cases go unreported for
various reasons including the victims’ fear of the attackers, or because
they can’t afford the legal bills. Now some victims are being given the hope
of a better future and a career, thanks to one woman’s desire to help.

First there was Hollywood. Then came Bollywood. Now movie buffs in
Uganda are hailing ‘Ugawood’ as the one to watch. Film makers in Uganda are
enjoying a surge in interest for home grown movies after the success of the
Academy Award winning film, ‘The Last King of Scotland’. The film was
partially shot in Uganda using local production crews. Now Ugandan producers
say the taste for local films may overtake the demand for Hollywood
blockbusters.

Firefighters from all over the world recently assembled in Liverpool for
the 10th World

scale it is their version of the Olympics including the New Zealand
firefighters version of the traditional ‘Hacka’ dance. Medals are awarded to
the winners of the Toughest Young Fire Crew event where competitors from
around the UK go head-to-head to win the trophy in a test of skill and
agility.
2# The cult of the death saint in Mexico.
Mexican devotees of Saint Death - a cult worshipping the skeletal figure
of death, held a Mass in their saint’s honour recently. The followers of
‘Santa Muerta’ were registered as a religious group by the government in
2003, but that was later revoked and the cult has faced government and
religious opposition ever since.

It’s transforming the area into a cultural centre to attract more people to
the area.
2# Ancient Chilean Mummies go on display.
The oldest mummies in the world have gone on display in the Chilean
capital, Santiago. Scientists say some of the mummies, preserved by the
bone-dry Atacama Desert, and an elaborate deathbed treatment, are nearly
eight thousand years old. That’s about 2600 years older than the oldest
Egyptian mummy.

Horizons:
1# Canadian car study shows that older drivers are safer.
When it comes to getting exceptional performance and value from their
vehicles, younger drivers would do well to adopt the maintenance habits of
their elders.
A recent study in Canada shows that drivers over the age of fifty are more
knowledgeable about vehicle maintenance and ways of reducing costly
fuel-consumption than younger drivers.
The study, conducted by Car Care Canada, finds older drivers understand the
needs of their cars more than any other age group.
It seems they know that regular maintenance not only means superior
performance and improved safety but with today’s high fuel prices, they’re
coming out ahead.
2# A battle of religious wills in a Spanish city.
Every day hundreds of Muslims in the Spanish city of Badalona squeeze
into at a tiny local mosque to pray. Members of the community say the fast
rise in their population means they’ve outgrown their small mosque.
Now they want to persuade their neighbours and the local authorities to
allow them to construct a bigger building, which could also be used for
social and cultural events.
