Pattaya City Hall is helping recruit the next generation of Thai massage therapists.

Invited by city officials, Thai Traditional Medicine Institution director, Thayida Thaithaworn, led a Feb. 9 seminar for women interested in training to become masseuses that covered the general principles behind massage therapy and enrollment in her Nonthaburi school.

While Thai massage shops seem to dot every street and alley in Pattaya, many who work there have not received proper training.

The aim of the city hall workshop was to improve the quality and standard of traditional health services in Thailand by recruiting women who wish to train in Bangkok for three years to learn proper technique.

Many of the women who attended seemed enthused at the possibility of a new career and professional certification and walked away with certificates announcing their intention to engage in their new profession.
