PHNOM PEHN, 3 April 2012 – Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, together with other delegates from Thailand, is attending the 20th ASEAN Summit as the event kicks off at the Cambodian Prime Minister’s Office in Phnom Pehn today.
The two-day meeting of ASEAN leaders will monitor the progress of the ASEAN Community formation. On this occasion, the Thai Premier will propose materializing the concept of the three pillars – ASEAN Security Community, ASEAN Economic Community, and ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community – to achieve the goal of building a strong ASEAN Community. For instance, the security pillar must uphold the mutual efforts to prevent terrorism from occurring within the region as well as support democracy, justice and good governance. Additionally, countries in possession of nuclear weapons must be urged to sign the Southeast Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ) within this year. Meanwhile, the socio-cultural pillar must boost more cooperation to mutually reduce the haze situation in the Mekong region by 2015.
The 20th ASEAN Summit is taking place during 3-4 April in Phnom Pehn, Cambodia. This is the first time that Cambodia is playing host to the regional summit. The meeting will also mark the 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
