BANGKOK, 5 April 2012  – The Transport Ministry is poised to invest more in the construction of the Red-Line electric rail service.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Yutthana Thapcharoen said that Transport Ministry officials and the SRT have in their latest meeting discussed an increase in the construction budget for the Red Line electric rail system, which runs a distance of 26 kilometers between Bang Sue and Rangsit.

Mr. Yutthana said that the SRT will next week propose to its Board to approve a 10% budget increase, from 75.54 billion baht to 80.37 billion baht. If everything goes as planned, the increase proposal will be passed to the Cabinet for consideration accordingly.

The SRT governor said that an increase in the construction budget is inevitable as the original amount was based on the calculation in 2009, which is not reflecting the current cost of construction.
