TOKYO, 22 April 2012 – Thailand has shown its appreciation to Japan for its collaboration in the development of the Mekong Sub-region’s economy and basic infrastructure.
Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has wrapped up her participation in the 4th Mekong-Japan Summit in Tokyo, in which she joined leaders from Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Japan to discuss the development of this emerging region.
At the joint press conference, PM Yingluck stated that she has been satisfied with the progress achieved during the summit, particularly the adoption of the Tokyo Strategy for Mekong-Japan Cooperation.
The 3-year action plan adopted by involved countries involves 3 main strategies, including the promotion of basic infrastructure in the Mekong Sub-region, the joint trade and investment development and the emphasis on environment, the quality of life of women and children, the disaster management and the food security issues.
For Thailand, the PM has pledged a support to Japan’s development project, especially the East-West-South economic zones.
The Thai Premier also stated that her government has always recognized the importance of the assistance given to neighboring countries and, this year, it has allocated around 77 million US dollars for this cause, which will be spent on the joint technical improvement and the SME business development within the ASEAN community.
