American, 64, charged with using fake passport, ATM cards

A 63-year-old American has been arrested for allegedly using counterfeit ATM cards and passport to scam Thai banks.

Texan Robert Warren Stanberry Jr. was apprehended May 4 outside a Krungsri Ayuthaya Bank currency-exchange booth after a bank fraud-prevention employee notified authorities someone was attempting to use a bogus card to withdraw funds from its automated teller machine.

Police recovered one fake UOB and two bogus Citibank ATM cards, as well as a British passport identifying Stanberry as Northern Ireland native Brod Thomas.

Under interrogation, the American senior citizen led police to his Soi Buakaow hotel room where the real passport was recovered.

Police said Stanberry confessed to buying the cards and passport on Bangkok’s Khaosan Road with the intent of stealing from banks and using a fake identity to aid his escape.
