BANGKOK, 16 May 2012 – The Royal Thai Police is planning to crack down on illegal gambling after UEFA Euro 2012 kicks off in June by collaborating with pubs, bars and restaurants that will be broadcasting live matches.
National Police Spokesperson Police Major General Piya Uthayo said Deputy Police Chief Police General Pansiri Prapawat has instructed every police station to keep surveillance on any venues in its area that will be showing live broadcasts of football matches during the Euro 2012 championship.
If owners of these places are found to have allowed gambling to take place, they will be prosecuted and have their business licenses revoked. Educational institutions have also been asked to encourage their students to stay away from gambling. In the meantime, the Police Office of Information and Communication Technology has been given the authority to shut down any websites involved with gambling.
