BANGKOK, 27 May 2012 – The Transport Ministry is poised to request a special budget for the improvement of selected northern roads and highways.

It is reported that the Transport Ministry is planning to ask the Cabinet meeting on May 29th for an approval of the improvement plan for a number of roads and highways in 5 upper northern provinces, including Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son and Phayao.

The proposal is part of a 5-year project of the Department of Highways and estimated to cost approximately 3.6 billion baht.

The project involves improvement of a total of 686.8 kilometers of major and minor roads leading to various sites of royal agricultural development centers in the North. It will be executed in three phases, i.e. 220 kms from 2012-2014, 390 kms from 2014-2016 and 77 kms in 2016.

If implemented, the project will be beneficial not only to officials and farm workers at the royal agricultural development centers but will also ease traveling problems of villagers in nearby areas.
