There are more than 90 schools in and around Pattaya and it is amazing how many are unable to provide their students with clean drinking water with just a turn of the tap.
Around Pattaya, many schools have had expensive extensions built recently, funded by City Hall, which include large roofs over the play areas and building extensions to house additional students, funds that the schools would not be able to provide. But much of the basic equipment like computers, sports equipment and drinking water, are not on the priority list of things to do.
A small school near Mabprachan, Wat Khao Po Thong, has 250 students between the age of 4 and 12 years but will soon have to cater for 300 students, is a case in point. Water has to be purchased from the local agent in 20 litre bottles and placed in a position convenient for the 250 children to queue up to obtain a drink. More expense for the school and inconvenience for the children.
We are all aware how important it is to drink a certain amount of water per day in the temperatures we experience in Thailand, so having easy access to water is essential. Nigel Oakes, now a resident of Thailand from UK, has donated funds to many projects around Pattaya and has now kindly donated sufficient funds for a water filtration system to be installed at this school together with 15 taps from which children have easy access to obtain a cup of water whenever they want.
