Migrant workers who legally enter the country from Myanmar, Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia looking for jobs are now mostly employed in the services and construction sectors.
This was disclosed yesterday by the Department of Employment.
According to the department’s chief Mr Arak Prommanee, most legal migrant workers are currently hired in services and construction sectors.
At present, there are 323,270 migrant workers legally work in the country.
Breakdowns of migrant workers are 155,835 from Myanmar, 33,899 from Laos and 133,536 from Cambodia.
He said these workers have been allowed to work legally in Thailand, thus enabling the government to resolve human trafficking problems effectively.
He cautioned further that employers who failed to legalize their workers will be subject to a fine of 10,000 to 100,000 baht per worker.
Besides, penalty for illegal migrant worker will be a maximum of five years in prison or a fine of 2,000 to 100,000 baht or both.
