BANGKOK, 2 July 2012  – The Ministry of Commerce has reported that the consumer confidence index in June slightly increased but the future sentiment index dropped following the public’s lack of confidence in the economy.

Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Phuangrach said on Monday that the overall consumer confidence index in June 2012 stood at 27.6, increasing from the May figure of 27.4. The current sentiment index is 20.9, rising from 18.5, whereas the future sentiment index is 32.1, lower than the previous score of 33.4. The index on future income in the next three months is 46.3, dropping from 51.2.

The positive factors that contributed to the higher consumer confidence index in June included the decreasing global oil price, the Thai government’s extension of assistance measures for low-income people, the extension of diesel excise tax cut as well as the Euro 2012 football tournament.

The negative factors were the volatile global economy, lower energy cost assistance and concerns over natural disasters. These factors undermined the public’s confidence on future income.
