First off, big congratulations to Ariya Jutanugarn on her fantastic win at the Womens British Open which should be a huge boost for Thai golf. You did us proud, May!
It’s just not the same. A Monthly Medal without Kenny Aihara winning is only possible because Kenny is not here! Time for the other lads to have a chance, and Green Valley was the destination for this months’ comp. Condition of the course and the weather were absolutely perfect.
There was a huge disparity between 3rd place and the boys at count back with an 8 stroke separation. It was Peter LeNoury, Mark Wood and Andrew Eaton who tied with a 74 net score today. Andrew claimed the Caddy Smile near pin contest as well.
Lou Ventimiglia and Phil Smedley ended up way ahead of the rest with net 66’s, but it was Capt. Phil who got the best of Louis on count back. Phil has been a regular on the podium lately and this win today seems to show he is certainly back in top form. Our resident convict will be the proud owner of an Antigua Medal star when our new shirt order arrives next week.
Tuesday, July 26, Pattavia Century (white tees) – Stableford

We have been playing Pattavia a lot lately, it is a course in high demand as the layout, condition and price are second to none. There is some discussion as to whether this is a Nick Faldo course or a Robert McFarland design but in any event I am sure either one would be proud to have their name associated with Pattavia, everybody seems to love it.
The last time we played here a couple of weeks ago, we had an issue with the flies and gnats (or midges) buzzing your eyes and ears. This time it was not so bad, so maybe it is a seasonal thing that has something to do with the pineapple plantations all around. After all, the name Pattavia is actually a species of pineapple grown here, hence the name!
The greens here are usually treacherous but today they were running a bit slower so scoring seemed to be a bit better. At the 36 point mark, we found the Scandies in control with Lasse and Per shooting to their handicap. Tied on 37 was the duo of Teddy Ogawa and Jimmy Dundon with a solid 37 points to share the win. Sign me up for that any day!
The Caddy Smile near pin was a lovely shot from my partner on the day, Dale Shier. Dale put it to 20 feet on the long 17th of 174 yards and just barely missed the birdie. Nothing wrong with a tap in par.
Thursday, July 28, Laem Chabang (white tees) – Stableford
1st Teddy Ogawa (18) 42pts
2nd Darren Stanton (17) 41pts
T3rd Masao Ishikawa (18) 40pts
T3rd Kim Seadden (20) 40pts
One of the best courses in the region, Laem Chabang was in stellar condition for our competition today. Tuesdays and Thursdays are the Sports Days here so for a mere 2,300 baht you will play a great Jack Nicklaus golf course that Jack himself has said he is very proud of.
There were 4 very high scores out here today so let’s start with the lads that tied for third place. You would have thought 40 points could be a winner out here, but today it only got a share of third place. Kim Seadden and Masao Ishikawa did so well but were denied the win by a couple of shots. Darren Stanton was in sole second place with a terrific 41 point haul, but it was the smiling Teddy Ogawa whose 42 point card won the day. Well played Teddy!
Our Caddy Smile near pin winner was Peter Thomas who was all over it.
I was at the Thailand Golf Travel Mart today and at the media briefing, learned the construction near Buddha Mountain is in fact a new golf course called The Masters. It is designed by I.M.G. so should be a very high end addition to the golf industry here in the Pattaya area. Completion should be in 18 months, and I will keep you posted when more details are announced. Thanks to Mike Bridge and The Pattaya Golfer magazine for the invitation!
