BANGKOK, July 11 – Thailand and Palestine have expressed their readiness to foster bilateral relations in the future after Thailand recognised Palestine as an independent state in January and established diplomatic ties, according to Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Jullapong Nonsrichai.

Mr Jullapong and visiting Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Malki on Wednesday jointly held a news conference at Ministry of Foreign Affairs after holding bilateral talks.

The vice minister said that he discussed with Mr Malki a wide range of issues including the latest political situation of Palestine while Thailand encouraged Palestine to solve its problems through peaceful means.

Thailand also supports Palestine’s right to have their own state on mutual acceptance between Palestine and Israel, he said.

The vice minister said they discussed Thailand’s Cabinet resolution in 2010 which recognised Palestine as an independent state and eventually established diplomatic ties.

Thailand’s embassy in Amman, Jordan, is now responsible for the diplomatic mission for Palestine.

Mr Jullapong said he also discussed with Mr Malki cooperation in skills training particularly the construction, while the southern insurgency in Thailand was also on the agenda.

Mr Malki thanked Thailand for warm welcome during his visit to the kingdom and said he hoped that a Palestinian ambassador to Thailand would be appointed soon.

He also expressed hope that cooperation between Thailand and Palestine would be expanded and would foster closer ties in the future.
