BANGKOK, 12 July 2012 – The private sector has voiced concerns over the problem of corruption in the government’s water management projects, calling for the government to disclose information about the projects’ procurement for transparency.

Director of the Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, Thanawat Polwichai, said most people still did not have much access to information about the government’s water management. He added that the government had admitted that the projects, set to be completed in July-August this year, had not progressed.

The director said the private sector wanted the government to reveal related information so that they could evaluate the projects. Mr. Thanawat suggested the government to urgently implement large-scale projects and disclose the procurement information, noting that these projects used special procurement processes which might have loopholes for corruption.

Mr. Thanawat said if the government could prove that the procurement was transparent, investors would regain their confidence and return to Thailand.
