Police launches campaign discouraging smartphone gaming while driving

The Metropolitan Police has launched a campaign promoting road safety, warning that playing games on smartphones while driving can be punishable by the law.

Metropolitan Police Chief, Pol Lt Gen Sanit Mahathavorn officiated at the “Pokemon Traffic No-Go” campaign over the weekend, discouraging smartphone gaming among drivers for road safety after the launch of the popular Pokemon Go game in Thailand.

He said a team of 50 police officers will begin patrolling for any person playing games on their smartphone while driving, starting from 22 August 2016 in several areas in central Bangkok.

The general public are asked not to play the game while driving for their own and the public’s safety.  Persons who play Pokemon Go game while driving can be subject to a 1,000 baht fine.

The Metropolitan Police will also be compiling road accident statistics in a one month period after the launch of the game to see its effect on road safety.
