Halloween spookily quiet in Pattaya

With organized parties restrained during the official mourning period for HM the King, Halloween played out in quieter fashion in Pattaya, with plenty of people dressing up, but not as many partying down.

Walking Street’s usually lively atmosphere was more subdued Oct. 31. Some bars put out spooky decorations and pumpkins, but the ghouls, vampires and zombies wandering the street acted low key. While not publicized, a few parties did break out behind closed doors, however.

Street and market vendors said demand for costumes tumbled more than 60 percent this year, acknowledging it was not a time to celebrate.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, which banks its cash on scary attractions, wasn’t about to give up on Halloween, still offering face painting, costume sales and other booths, but, again, the hijinks weren’t as high this year.

Ripley’s did draw people to its scary attractions and vendors said they were satisfied selling bloody makeup jobs for up to 1,000 baht each.
