Bunker Boys @ The Bowling Green

Monday, July 30,Green Valley – Stableford

Only a small group of golfers today for what would turn out to be a slow round which was further interrupted by a 20 minute rain break.

The Green Valley management have decided yet again to change the layout of the course, now starting on the par 5 (formerly the 3rd hole), hence avoiding the starting on the most difficult hole on the course.  If my memory serves me right this was the layout 2 or 3 years ago, and personally I feel it’s a much better option – difficult to understand why they ever bothered messing it around – but this is Thailand!

Today was all about deciding the Golfer of the Month title, and John Graham’s second place was enough to give him the one point he needed to pip Barry Murnin by the narrowest of margins.  The winner on the day was Geoff Williams who was also the only player to better his handicap.

1st Geoff Williams (17) 39pts

2nd John Graham (10) 36pts

3rd Tony Robbins (14) 37pts

Near Pins:  Tony Robbins and William Macey

Wednesday, August 1,Khaow Kheow – Stableford

A good turnout today, with 4 groups of golfers heading off under overcast conditions to tackle the A and C courses.

The course was quiet and in good condition, so there was no reasonable explanation for the dismal scores that were returned.  Khaow Kheow is one of those courses which golfers either love or hate, and it can certainly punish you if you’re not on your game – but there’s no denying it’s one of the best courses in the area.

Once again Geoff Williams was the only player to better his handicap, and his reward is a 2 shot cut in his handicap since last week – it’s a tough sport, this golf game.

1st Geoff Williams (16) 37pts

2nd Geoff Cox (14) 32pts

3rd Tony Robbins (14) 31pts

Near Pins: Barry Murnin, Geoff Parker, Geoff Parker and Tony Robbins

Friday, August 3,Crystal Bay – Stableford

Today was a Buddha holiday and we also had a contingent of regulars playing in the Jackelope tournament so it was left to the true hardcore Bunker Boys to tackle the Crystal Bay course.

We set off in very light drizzle for the first 3 holes (barely enough to bother opening the umbrella) and then the rest of the round was played in near perfect conditions.  Even though it was a holiday the course was quiet, and the round was completed comfortably in under 4 hours.

The fairways and greens were in good shape and Geoff Williams continued his great run of form, scoring 39 points for the second time this week – also winning three games in a row!  Some of Geoff’s competitors are starting to get desperate to find his secret, and PJ was heard to ask him if the tee he was using was legal!

1st Geoff Williams (16) 39pts

2nd John Graham (10) 36pts

3rd Geoff Parker (12) 35pts

The Bunker Boys are a PSC affiliated golf society who currently play out of the Bowling Green on Soi X-Zyte between Pattaya 3rd Road and Soi Buakhaow.  We play three times per week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, so if you enjoy a fun day out, and a friendly but competitive golf competition why not come and join us.

We meet at the Bowling Green at 9 a.m. for breakfast and transportation, and new players with valid handicaps are always welcome.  For more information call Dave on 087 1469978, email [email protected].

Note:  The Bunker Boys are now searching for a new home, after being informed this week that the Bowling Green will close in two months time.  We’ll keep you informed of developments, but if you have any suggestions regarding a suitable bar in Central Pattaya, that would welcome a group of dedicated golfers (and drinkers) year round, we’d be happy to hear from you.

The society is also in the process of resurrecting their website which you can find at http://www.bunkersociety.com.  You can also contact us by email at [email protected].
