The fisheries delegation of the European Parliament is satisfied the Thai government’s performance in trying to solve the illegal, unregulated, unreported IUU) fishing problem but has suggested that the government steps up efforts to regulate and protect foreign migrant workers illegally working in fisheries industry, said government spokesman Lt-Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd on Wednesday.
The EU fisheries delegation visited Thailand during November 1-4 to follow up Thailand’s progress in addressing the IUU problem. The delegation met with representatives of Thai agencies involved in solving the IUU problem and visited the centre monitoring fishing trawlers leaving and arriving in ports and the fisheries management centre in Samut Sakhon province.
The spokesman said the EU delegation praised the government for its attempt to address the IUU problem, especially regarding the legal aspect by updating several laws.
The delegation promised cooperation with the government to tackle the IUU problem as well as human trafficking, he added.
