The Golf Club weekly review

Monday, Nov. 7, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Bob Mulholland (7) 38pts

2nd Terry Dyer (16) 37pts

3rd Peter LeNoury (14) 34pts

It was a mixed podium of tourists, locals and a guy who looks like he is certainly going to move here.  Peter LeNoury is legendary for playing more rounds of golf than damn near anybody of any age.  In his sexy sixties, Pete is a gentleman golfer that gets along with everyone and certainly has a passion for the game.  He was off his game today but still managed a 34 that beat out 22 other guys!  Also, thanks to Pete for his generosity towards our Caddy Smile project that he is a regular contributor to.

The flight crew on Qantas must be getting to know Terry Dyer pretty well, as every few months he and his moustache turn up on the doorstep of our Home for Wayward Golfers here on L.K. Metro. Terry has been in the chips a few times this trip and a fine 37 out there took him up to second place.

He won on Friday, and here he was again with a 38 point card.  Scotsman Bob Mulholland was raised on golf balls.  Strange diet, I know but it actually worked in his case.  Not content with today’s Caddy Smile near pin, a 38-point round put Bob on the top of the heap, as Frankie might say. Will he bite the bullet and take up full time residence here? We sure hope so, but maybe some of the regulars might be worried.  All we need is another Kenny!

Thursday, Nov. 10, Kabinburi S.C. (yellow tees) – Stableford

1st Muffy Kerr (12) 40pts

2nd Frank Tordeur (19) 38pts

3rd Dale Shier (13) 36pts

4th Ernie McInerney (11) 35pts

Road Trip!  We just love to hear those words and there is no finer destination than the Serenity Resort and Spa to play at the Kabinburi Sport Club.  26 golfers and a support crew of 6 ladies braved the 200 kilometre hike for our getaway to K-town.

The comp was an individual stableford as well as the 2-day eclectic and the trip was full of surprises.  Has anyone heard of a guy winning all four near pins in a round?  Kenny Aihara did just that and to call it a hat trick is an understatement.  Ironically, the near pin prizes were golf caps so Kenny now has 4 new hats to add to his wardrobe.  I hope it doesn’t go to his head!

Ernie is back in town! After surviving Hurricane Matthew in his home state of Florida, the long hitting sailor stormed into Pattaya and kicked of his journey with a 35 here to grab 4th place.  Our buddy Dale Shier made a statement with a 36 on the card to keep him in the running for the eclectic, while visiting Frank Tordeur delivered 38 outstanding points for sole second.

On to the winner, and as it turns out it was one of those Siam members who shone through. The Canadian representative of the country club and 40 point golfer today was long standing local Muffy Kerr.  Muffy has never played better golf, and we start to make the correlation that the longer his hair gets, the better his scores are. It shouldn’t be too far into the future when we see a shoulder-length Mr. Kerr winning everything.

Friday, Nov. 11, Kabinburi S.C. – (yellow tees) – Stableford

1st Dale Shier (13) 40pts

T 2nd Barry Tregurtha (20) 38pts

T2nd Muffy Kerr (12) 38pts

4th Ernie McInerney (11) 37pts

Ernie did it again, but would another 4th place (which is great with this big a field) be enough on the right holes?  Thursday’s winner, Mr. Kerr with the long hair, pulled off another beauty with 38 on the card.  Again, was it on the right holes for the eclectic?  Coming out of nowhere, our ol’ mate Barry the Book (he’s an avid reader) ended up in a tie with Muffy for second, so well played to Mr. Tregurtha.

I guess Ryder had a good night’s sleep as ‘Daddy’ Dale Shier was the big winner in a surprise upset with a 40-point equalizer for the Englishman.  Dale is one of our original TGC founding members and sponsors several tours that we all look forward to, as we can’t get enough abuse just sitting around here in the bar.  Nice round mate.

On to the eclectic!  It’s a funny old game and if you are not familiar with this format, you simply take your best score over the 2 days for each hole to come up with your score.  There is strategy and pressure as the hole you had a bogey on the first day requires an improvement to be in the running. There can be wild swings of fortune on the scorecard and that is the beauty of this comp.

As it turned out, it was Muffy Kerr who could not be caught and a 49 combined eclectic score was the winner at Kabinburi.  To add 9 points to an already great score is a terrific result, but then again his hair got a bit longer, didn’t it?

There was a miraculous comeback for Frank Tordeur as the Belgian only appeared on the first day podium, yet placed second for the eclectic, so some handy scoring indeed.  Never out of the picture, we saw a tie for third place with baldies Ernie McInerney and Dale Shier at 45 eclectic points, so never mind, that long-hair theory may not work for everyone.
