BANGKOK, 3 September 2012 – The Bangkok Metro Company Limited (BMCL), operator of the Bangkok’s subway, is expected to see the number of passengers rise by 15% this year, compared to last year’s.
With higher fuel prices and more condominiums built along the electric train lines, the BMCL has anticipated a 15% increase in passenger numbers on the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines and expected to generate 2 billion baht income this year, compared to last year’s 1.8 billion baht.
The BMCL also stated that the MRT has gained new passengers since the flood crisis in 2011, as electric trains are the only practical mode of transportation during that time. Those passengers have since found traveling by train more convenient than by any other means, and have been using the MRT services more frequently.
According to the BMCL, around 250,000-260,000 travelers are now commuting by the MRT daily, a hefty increase over last year, which saw 180,000 passengers per day.
