BANGKOK, Sept 4 – A House committee on disaster relief has shown confidence that an industrial estate in Ayutthaya province, 76 km north of Bangkok, will be safe from floods this year.

Jatuporn Charoenchua, vice chairman of the Lower House committee on prevention and relief of natural disasters, on Monday led a team of officials to inspect the construction of anti-flood dykes at Ban Wah industrial estate in Bangpa-in district, Ayutthaya.

The government has allocated Bt550 million for the construction which has been 90 per cent completed. Completion is expected in the next few weeks.

The massive floods at the industrial estate last year was five metres above mean sea level (MSL) while the dykes under construction are 5.5 metres above MSL

He said the Ayutthaya governor assured that the provincial administration, the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and the private sector are prepared for possible inundation.

The latest assessment gave us confidence that the area will be free from floods this year, Mr Jatuporn said.
