A mountain too high

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society

The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Mount sin Shadow on Tuesday, 24th January to play a stableford competition in two flights, divided at 18 and under, on a course in very good condition but in a strong breeze which hamstrung many of the golfers in terms of length and accuracy.

With some of the blue tee markers well back the day was destined to be long and testing and overall scores were low.  In the second flight Murray Edwards played a rare round with the group following tendon trouble and yet managed 28 points for third place whilst Dave Lehane, struggling with a fever, took second with 30 points.  Niall Caven, in rude health, took the victory with 31 points.

In the top flight Aussie Craig Thomas played his sole round this trip and recorded 30 points for third place, leaving joint winners Larry Slattery and Peter Wilson ruling the roost with 31 points each.  Peter had the honour of the day’s only birdie ‘2’, on the fifteenth.

Steve Evans enjoyed the boss’s consolation beer and the presentation was left to wonder why the scores were so low after what was essentially a very enjoyable day at Mountain Shadow.

Mike King returns in style

Greenwood was the choice of venue for the Pattaya Golf Society on Thursday, 26th January and Peter Thompson’s fine layout on the B and C nines was the allotted course for the day.  The course was in excellent condition with grassed fairways, trimmed and raked bunkers and very consistent greens, a little quick if truth be known.

The large field was divided into two divisions at eighteen and under and a tight contest was inevitable with the return of some good friends, all looking for a fine day’s golf.

In the second flight Mr. Len put his Championship woes behind him after a tough week previously and posted 31 points for third place, with Mike Wilsher thrashing the front-nine only to see the brakes put on his charge on the C nine but ending with 33 points in second place.  The flight winner was Mike King, playing his first round back with immense trepidation after serious heart problems during his return to the UK.  He not only survived the conditions but took the honours with 34 points.  Well done Captain Mike!

In the top flight Peter Wilson and Alan Griffiths shared third place with 32 points each, one behind the flight winner Dave Moriarty, with 34 points.  It was another consistent round from the NY based golfer.  There were no birdie ‘2’s on the day.

John Tallet enjoyed the consolation beer on his return after a few months absence.  With only three sub-par rounds played out of more than one hundred and fifty so far this month there is plenty of room for improvement for most of the PGS golfers and the new week brings with it fresh opportunities to show off their skills.
