The Year of the Rooster was launched with great fanfare on January 28, 2017 as the popular Chiang Mai Chinatown Chinese New Year Festival was opened by Deputy Governor Prajuab Kanthiya, Chiang Mai Mayor Tussanai Buranupakorn, and Chinese Consul General Rin Yisheng.

The Chinese New Year Parade is a big hit with tourists and locals alike as the dragon and lion dancers parade along Tha Pae Road bringing prosperity for local businesses.

The annual event, which is held by the Chiang Mai Administration Organization in cooperation with Chiang Mai Municipality, TAT – Chiang Mai Branch, Chiang Mai Provincial Tourism and Sports Office, and Chiang Mai Chinese-Thai Association, is a festive occasion with lion and dragon dancers, beauty contests, performances and plenty of food.

The event gives the local Thai – Chinese community a chance to see their rich and long-standing traditions and the close ties between the two countries. The event, which ran from January 28 – 31, 2017 was a big hit as tourists and locals turned out for the Keng Fu show by the Mei Wen team dedicated to HM King Rama IX, along with the Lion Dance, Fire Lion Show, and Miss Chiang Mai Chinatown boys and girls contest. The local Soi Lao Jow community was on hand selling local products as well as a great variety of food.
