Cafe Kronborg golfers visited Pattaya Country Club today full of expectations, but unfortunately we had to tolerate a frustratingly slow check-in followed by having to play on ridiculously slow greens.  A sign in the pro shop stated that the greens were 8 on the stimp-meter but putting clearly showed that they probably didn’t even reach 6.  A caddy informed us that the greens had recently been treated and that they were being allowed to grow before cutting to a sensible height.  We all understand that this work has to be carried out but it seems unreasonable and uncaring not to be notified in advance of play.

There is something not right about this golf course – it should have everything going for it with its close proximity to Pattaya, a modern club house and the course layout.  But it’s not cheap and time and again golfers complain about the greens.  It does not seem that lessons have been learned from the manner in which the likes of Pattavia and Treasure Hills have worked on their courses and look after their customers.

“Crumble corner”, namely the 16th 17th and 18th had many victims today.  There were only five players who made par on the 16th par three, only one player parred the 17th and on the 18th, with its difficult approach shot, only three players made par and one player made birdie.  Don’t plan your acceptance speech until you pas these holes!

We had two flights today.  The A flight (0-21) was won by Henning Olsen with 36 points and two vital birdies on the back-nine par fives.  Second and third places were taken by Kjeld Ravn and Lotte Boskov with 33 points each, followed by Arne Max Pedersen in fourth with 32.

The B flight honours went to Elias Magnusson with a fine 41 points who said later that he managed to one-putt most of the greens.  Daryl Evans was in second place with 37 points and Kurt Sandgaard third with 36.  Bringing up the rear was Peter Hammond with 32 points to complete the podium.

Kronborg golfers visited Pattavia on Thursday – a graveyard for good putters.  If the second green does not kill you then the fourth certainly will.  This is a smart well maintained golf course and you know what you are getting here, although sometimes playing wise it can feel like a punch in the face.  Nobody in our group was able to play to par and only three players made par on the short 138-yard fourth hole.

One player did however show the rest of us that no matter how many shots you are given, you still have to get the ball in the hole to score and that player was Eddie “The Eagle” Glinsek who won the B Flight (20 upwards) with a fine 34 points inspite of blobbing the long par-four 9th and the 18th.  Second in the B Flight with 33 points was Torben Sorensen who had 18 points on the back 9 to beat Daryl Evans on count back.  Gordon Clegg was in fourth place with 32 points.

In the A Flight, Kenneth Masden with his 33 points and 10 on the last 6 holes just pipped Arne Max Pedersen on count back for first place.  In third spot with 29 points was Kris Helgason and Brian Gabe completed the top four with 28.
