Chonburi will deploy more than 1,000 police officers, soldiers and volunteers to try to minimize road carnage during Songkran.

Gov. Pakarathorn Thienchai said March 29 that the Chonburi Road Accident Prevention Center will oversee 27 checkpoints and 52 service stations in the province’s 11 districts from April 11-17.

Students from various vocational schools will offer free vehicle checks in six places.

The government also has outlawed any advertising for alcohol or cigarettes in areas used for Songkran festivals, he said.

The efforts are being made to cut the number of accidents, injuries and deaths on the road during the Thai New Year. (CPRD)
