Newville, Pa. (AP) – Police in Pennsylvania say they arrested a man wearing a Drunk Lives Matter shirt for drunken driving. Police say 44-year-old Elwood Gutshall III’s blood-alcohol content was about two and a half times the state’s legal limit for drivers when he was pulled over early on March 19 in Newville. He was wearing a green St. Patrick’s Day shirt with the saying on it. Online court records don’t list an attorney for Gutshall, who faces a preliminary hearing May 26. Nobody answered the phone at his home Wednesday.
Russian Foreign Ministry poked fun at hacker scandal
Moscow (AP) – Need some election interference? The Russian Foreign Ministry is ready to help – or so it says on April Fools’ Day. On Saturday, the ministry posted on its Facebook page an audio file of the purported new automated telephone switchboard message for Russian embassies. “To arrange a call from a Russian diplomat to your political opponent, press 1,” the recording begins, in Russian and English. Press 2 “to use the services of Russian hackers,” and 3 “to request election interference.” A ministry duty officer, who did not give his name in line with official practice, confirmed to The Associated Press that the post was an official joke. Russian President Vladimir Putin has emphatically denied allegations of Russian meddling in the U.S. presidential election.
Police: Shoplifter trapped in store after closing calls 911
KENT, Ohio (AP) – Ohio police say a suspected shoplifter called 911 for help after she hid in a fitting room at closing time and got locked inside a department store. Brimfield Township police say surveillance video from the incident at a Kohl’s store late last month shows her taking clothing items, then realizing she’s trapped in the store near Kent, roughly 35 miles (56 kilometers) southeast of Cleveland. Police say officers already were heading to the store when she called 911 because she set off alarms. WJW-TV reports 35-year-old Joanne Havens told police she heard the store-closing announcements and simply didn’t leave in time. But officers say they found stolen items in her purse. The Ravenna (rah-VEHN’-uh) woman has pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge. Court records listed no attorney for her.
Carcasses in Pennsylvania park are for environmental study
Nazareth, Pa. (AP) – Don’t disturb the carcasses. That’s the message folks at the Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center in eastern Pennsylvania have for visitors. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has placed deer carcasses in the nature park in hopes of drawing out carnivores and scavengers like turkey vultures. The agency says it’s for its BioBlitz 2017 on Saturday. That’s when scientists, students and volunteers will comb through the park for 12 hours, studying what kinds of animals are living there. The park tells visitors to its Facebook page that the carcasses will be disposed of after the study. But, for now, they’re to be left alone.
Coloring book with Hitler image pulled from Dutch stores
The Hague, Netherlands (AP) – A chain of Dutch stores has apologized after inadvertently selling children’s coloring books featuring an image of Adolf Hitler. The Kruidvat chain of drugstores posted a statement on its website saying the coloring books, which went on sale this week, were immediately pulled from shelves after the discovery of an “inappropriate image.” The image shows Hitler giving a Nazi salute. On his left arm is a red band with a swastika. Without directly referring to Hitler, the company says it is investigating how the image got into the books “despite various checks of the content.” Kruidvat declined further comment Thursday. It was not clear how many of the books were sold.
