BANGKOK, Oct 24 – MCOT Plc and Government Savings Bank (GSB) on Wednesday agreed to promote the celebration of the centennial anniversary of Government Savings Bank founding, which falls on April 1st next year.

MCOT President Anek Permvongseni and GSB Director and Acting President and CEO Nuntapol Kanchanawat signed an agreement in order to form concepts, pattern and strategies to mark and publicise the 100th anniversary of the bank’s foundation.

As MCOT is a leading media organisation which operates modernine television (channel 9) and other media outlets, the GSB viewed that MCOT will be able to broadly promote the bank’s relevant information and activities to all targets, including the public and students.

The public relations plan was expected to be part of helping to drive the country’s economy, as the bank has plans to organise activities and events at the national and international levels to promote information to neighbouring countries.

King Vajiravudh or King Rama VI introduced savings services to Thailand in 1913 with the main purpose to educate Thai people on banking services and promote savings habits among them. King Vajiravudh issued an act, effective from 1 April 1913, to formally set up the Savings Office which began its operation under the Royal Treasury.

The Office was renamed the Government Savings Bank (GSB), effective from 1 April 1947.

Currently, GSB is a juristic person and state enterprise which operates as a financial institute guaranteed by the government under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance. GSB now operates approximately 930 branches throughout Thailand.
