Officials said contractors filmed dumping concrete scraps and soil into the Nongprue Canal weren’t rogue construction workers, but, in fact, hired by the sub-district to build a dam.

Mayor Mai Chaiyanit told the media June 6 that the work crew shown in videos and photos posted to Facebook by user “Baan Nongdaeng” were filling in the bottom of the canal in front of Nongprue School to lay a foundation for heavy machinery to operate there.

Once the base is laid, heavy equipment will drive concrete posts into the canal to provide the foundation for a dam needed for flood control.

He assured keyboard warriors outraged by what they thought was illegal dumping that once the posts are driven, the building waste dumped this month will be removed.
