IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society saw its largest field since February turn out on Monday, 22nd October to play a stableford competition at Eastern Star, in two flights divided at 16.5 and under.
The course was surviving adequately after the weeks of heavy rain but fairways were still soft and with very little run. The greens are improving all the time at the course as the new ground staff get their feet under the table and get their hands dirty at last.
In the second flight Ken Grimes took third place with 29 points, only one behind the joint winners Mr Len and Ian Rowson.
In the top flight Ray Jackson shared third place with Ron Matthews on 31 points and Wichai Tananusorn returned the day’s best gross score of 83 which gave him 34 points for second place. The winner was the ebullient Aussie Garry Hookey and his infectious smile lit up the presentation when his score of 35 points was announced.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Ray Cody for his less than impressive score. Rabbi’s beer draw was won by Tony Thorne. Soi Buakhao gets busier by the day as the high season approaches but there is still plenty of good golf available from Rabbi’s Elephant Bar with the Pattaya Golf Society.
Tight finish at Phoenix
Phoenix was in good condition on Wednesday, 24th October, when the Pattaya Golf Society visited to play a medal event on the Mountain and Lakes nines. The large field was divided into two flights at fifteen an under and a tight affair was in prospect, especially after a heavy shower halfway round cooled everybody off and refocusing was essential after a thirty minute break.
In the second flight Ronnie Ramsay continued his good form with net 75 for third place, only one shot behind the joint winners Garry Hookey and Ian Rowson, on net 74.
In the top flight Dave Edwards took third with net 74 whilst Wichai Tananusorn and Ron Matthews shared the win with net 73.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and the boss’s free beer draw was won by Robbie Taylor who had experienced a fretful day with a new putter which just didn’t do as it was told!
The Booby Bevy went to Charlie Landrebe who suffered a delayed reaction with some “Black Ants”, and when his caddy applied some sunblock to his legs he found it difficult to continue with what appeared to be an extra club! Disqualification loomed but the Booby Bevy sufficed.
Phoenix had witnessed some excellent golf and the winners are to be congratulated for their efforts with the PGS.
Favourites win charity “Fun” Day
The Pattaya Golf Society returned to charity matters on Friday, 26th October when the group visited Greenwood for its monthly fundraising event for the Fr Ray Foundation Outreach Center on Soi Thepprasit. The basically “fun” team event this month followed a “1-2-3” stableford format and was played on the A and C nines. Technical prizes were sponsored by Mike Ensor, Garry Hookey, Larry Slattery, Rabbi and the “Oz Boyz” and various individual donations already had the figure at 1250 baht before the event teed off.
The last minute withdrawal of Mr Len on visa business meant that late arrival Andrew Purdie took his place with the well fancied duo of Wichai Tananusorn and Larry Slattery and they were to justify their ranking with 74 points for the win. In second place was the team of Tony Thorne, Tim Dale and Ron Matthews with 69 points. The Scottish trio of Bobby Shirkey and the two Ronnies, Senior and Junior, took third with 67 points.
Wichai took three of the four near pin prizes, yet failed to convert any to birdies, and he shared the prize for the best total on the par fives with Ron Matthews (10 points), whilst Dave Robinson added to his near pin prize with the best total on the par threes (10 points).
The Booby Bevy went inevitably to the pairing of Bryan Barrell and Phil McClure when the third member of their team failed to show up, leaving them with a Herculean task. Rabbi’s special “technical” prize went to Andrew Purdie as the first to drive OB.
Further donations were made during the presentation and in the end the group had raised more than 6K for the kids at the Outreach Center, pushing the total raised this year so far to almost fifty thousand.
