The crumbling Bali Hai Pier access bridge has been completely removed as contractors continue their overhaul of the South Pattaya jetty.

It took workers three days to excise all remnants of the bridge, which was the most dilapidated section of the concrete pier that opened more than a decade ago.

Pattaya chief engineer Jamorn Kajenjerm said the bridge also was obstructing the South Pattaya flood-drainage canal. Now that it is gone, flooding problems should dissipate.

A replacement bridge that does not encroach on public land will be built, but plans and budget have not yet been approved, he said.

While they wait for the bureaucrats, contractors have moved on to demolishing buildings and other structures near the canal on Second Road near the entrance of Walking Street Soi 16.

A survey currently is underway and machinery will be moved in once measurements are confirmed.
