Sawang Rojanathamsathan rescuers spent about 30 minutes July 27 talking the 80-year-old man down from a five-meter-tall tree in the yard of his son’s house on Soi Bonkai. The man was rescued unhurt.

The would-be suicide victim told authorities he wanted to die because he was constantly having health issues and was becoming a burden to his family.

He previously lived in another province but was brought to Sattahip to live with his son. He said he had tried to kill himself before.

Neighbor Kanung Huabcharoen, 70, said the two were friends and the man would often stop by for a chat. But today she saw him get a ladder and climb the tree with a cable in his hand. She asked what he was doing and she called for help when he answered he was going to hang himself.

The man’s son, who was at work, rushed home and promised to keep a closer eye on his father in the future.
